I'll go into detail, but succinctly put, Nick worked a miracle on my hair. He gave me the best haircut I've ever had, and I didn't even really give him much to work with, both in terms of literal hair and my ideas for a cut. My new go-to stylist. Some backstory: I have naturally curly/wavy hair that I have been highlighting since I was 14. Although we all know the damage highlights can cause (especially with thin hair), I never had any major issues with damage, and I suspect this was because I almost always allowed my hair to air-dry and left it natural. Around December 2017/January 2018, I tried experimenting with my hair, and realized if I used a round brush and a hairdryer I could blow my hair out straight, and blowing it out gave it volume. I went with this method of styling my hair for about 4-5 months until I realized that I was losing MASSIVE amounts of hair. It was very, very bad: I was developing bald spots and my hair was literally breaking off. It was so thin I was only confident when I wore it pinned up, and even pinning it up only required 3 bobby pins. I realized how bad my hair was, and was looking for a miracle worker to try and somehow salvage what was some seriously damaged hair. Enter Nick at Nola's. I went in to Nola's and scheduled a same-day appointment at 9:45 pm (which sounds late, but those hours are actually fantastic for a busy college student within walking distance of the salon). I didn't even really know what I wanted myself, so I told Nick to just cut the damage out. I was prepared to go short, so I basically told him to do whatever he thought was best for my hair. I couldn't be happier with the result. My hair has never been this short, but I love it. I have received many compliments and always recommend Nick when I do. Nick is going to be my new go-to stylist: he made great conversation with me, did a wonderful job on my hair, and even ran through a few suggestions with me for the future for ways he could lighten my hair without bleaching it (I had told him I was nervous about continuing to highlight my hair after my recent damage disaster, but he assured me there are ways to lighten without bleach). So stop panicking, you have found the right salon. Seriously, this place is the best. My friend and I booked Dani for our pixie cut transformation and we couldn't have gone to a better place. It's tucked away under sushi.com, with a mural-painted staircase to lead you down. The place is small, and very stylish, in that funky way only an underground salon should be. Dani was very friendly, super awesome, and very talented with her fingers! She took our photos and gave us exactly what we wanted. She gave us really cool styling tips that I had never heard of before, but perfect for what we wanted. She also gave me ideas on what to do coloring wise for my hair. Normally it would have been $25 (still cheap!) but we are students so she gave us a student discount, only $20! Also you can go in for free bang and neck trims as needed. afterward. Amy is great, mellow and quiet, but also engaging. I showed her pictures of my hair when I was really happy with it, she asked a few key questions and she did a wonderful job. Cleaning up shaggy layers, blending it all well and inquiring about how much I wanted to take off the ends and taking JUST that amount off. She was very thorough and started RIGHT on time. I'm really pleased with the end result! She was finishing up another client when I showed up and her hair also looked fantastic. Amy showed me the picture the client had brought in to emulate and it was pretty much spot on. A few things to keep in mind, I am new to Ann Arbor & it's a bit of a challenge to find parking when all the students are back. Second, it's small (may be a bit of tight fit if you decide to bring a friend). Last, prices on cut are based on current hair length (i.e. it is more expensive to cut longer hair). My two haircuts from Nic were truly wonderous experiences that boosted my look and my spirits. First, I just enjoy the space -- I love the cozy, subterranean location. The lush décor is unique and actually interesting to look while still contributing to an overall relaxing environment. It feels special and authentic, which leads me to Nic. He is a wonderful stylist. I am always grateful to put myself in the hands of someone who can envision and fully execute the hair transformation. Thoroughly enjoyed my first time at Nolas. It's a sweet little spot nestled under some restaurants on N University. The place feels very much like your own hair salon as there are only 2 styling chairs and a wash bowl. I very much enjoyed the feel of being in a relaxed setting without a bunch of people rushing around. Plus she had an awesome pandora station going. I went to Dani because I was looking for someone who had experience cutting pixies. She listened to all of what I liked and didn't like about pixies and then gave some suggestions about what would look good on me. She wasn't hesitant to give me this drastically different style. She seemed confident and put me at ease about my decision. The 20% off discount for being a student (cash only) made it a very reasonably priced cut. Nick is probably Jesus. First off, he gave me a great cut. I mainly went in to him to get my hair dyed. He wasn't afraid to tell it like it was and warn me about what I was planning on doing. He wanted to be honest and straightforward about what the outcome could be. I'm glad I took his advice and went a different route because I am totally in love with how my hair ended up. He was also very helpful in making sure I got an appointment at the right time, and totally worked overtime (late into the night) to make sure I got exactly what I wanted. He also helped me though a "what the hell am I doing to my hair I totally want to change my mind" moment, which was great. He used extremely high quality products on my hair and even now the dye is still super concentrated and my hair still feels soft and healthy (which is a miracle for me). In addition, the atmosphere is great and time flew by even though I am pretty sure I was there for like 4 hours. The finished product was exactly what I wanted and I didn't even know what I wanted until I saw it done. He did some pretty cool things that I didn't expect and I am beyond pleased. I still wake up pumped about my hair. The price was a little steep, but for Ann Arbor, the fact that I have way more hair than the average bear, the amount of dye and time needed, and the quality of the dye, I totally understand the price. First time at NOLA's was tonight. I just moved here for school, and went to see Amy on a friend's recommendation. My hair was super-long and getting a little wild, and I went in looking to chop off at least eight inches. I brought her about a million pictures of January Jones' cutie long bob, and she took the time to ask me what I specifically liked about the cut and what I was looking for. When she finished, we took another look and she went back and did some touch-ups to make sure it looked as good straight as it will when I dry it naturally. The cut took a little longer than usual because she helped me cut off my ponytail so that I could donate it, but it never felt rushed and she even took the time at the end to put in some curls. Normally I'm pretty quiet if a stylist is doing something I'm not into, but I felt totally comfortable telling Amy what was/wasn't working for me. Maybe I'm growing up, or maybe she's just really easy to talk to. I'll post a photo to my account in case you're curious about the before/after. Best salon in AA. I have had Dani as my stylist for over a year and witnessed how much this place has grown. Dani is a creative stylist while super good at the fundamentals. If you have an idea of how your hair should turn out, she will make it happen. If you don't, she will give you an amazing surprise. She is very focused when doing you hair and listen to every single feedback you have. Moreover, Nick and Dani are both friendly and cool. I have always enjoyed talking to them. It's getting really hard to book them on Styleseat now. For Dani, you will need to book an appointment at least 2-3 weeks in advance. I just was lucky enough to get a haircut by Nick by a drop-in appointment on a Sunday. The salon creates a personal feel with having just two chairs. It is a bit of a oasis as it is tucked away under an Asian restaurant and not the easiest to find. This edgy vibe is totally intentional. I typically go to Great Clips or Borics for a haircut, because how hard can a trim be? Well, after giving Nick barely any direction he knew exactly what to do with my hair to give it life again. He spent 45 minutes, fast moving but very attentive to detail. I loved the outcome with the soft, natural looking layers. The space, for starters; is very welcoming, warm and fun. The decorative 1950's style and charm epitomize the "underground" ambiance you would expect. But as welcoming as it is, it pales in comparison to the knowledge, enlightenment and overall well rounded individuals that work the space. Nicholaus delivered an inspired short haircut that was perfectly adapted for my needs and features. I had requested a short "French-style" bob (more blunt and tousled) with a bit of asymmetry to suit my jawline. He was attentive, supportive, and downright enthusiastic while he worked, and we were BOTH thrilled with the results. He really cared about helping me look and feel exactly like what I described.
