I love this place. It's hip. The people here are the best. They have an attached boutique with great stuff in (Funky Monkey Boutique). I've been going to my hairdresser - Maria - for years and years and am thrilled that this is where she has landed. They are a non-kid place, which makes it relaxing. No kids waiting and causing trouble. They offer soft drinks, coffee, and wine (which I have indulged in from time to time). LOVE IT. read more

I have been going to Urban Roots for years. No matter where I move, or where I go to school at, I always have Kami cut my hair. She is the only person I've ever met who really knows how to work with red, curly hair. I have also never visited another hair salon that provides the experience that Urban Roots does. The salon is decorate in vibrant, 70s colors with a diverse array of art on the walls (now featuring a zebra butt!). The music playing in the salon changes all the time, but it always matches the atmosphere of the salon and rounds out the experience of going to Urban Roots. When you arrive for your appointment, you are immediately greeted when you walk in, and offered a drink while you wait. I usually choose to meander on over to the attached boutique (Funky Monkey), but sometimes I have enough time to visit her vintage store right next door! I recommend arriving early to your appointment at Urban Roots, and taking some time to walk around the vintage store. I always find one or two things that are just my style. I live in New York now, but I still make time when I can to go visit back home, and schedule an appointment with Kami. No matter where I move, I will always try and keep her as my hair stylist. I like the whole vibe of Urban Roots--very friendly and a bit off beat--but this review is really for Casey. She is the BEST colorist I've ever met. For several years she gave me low lights in my graying hair, and everyone always thought it was my natural color. There was never a root line. Then when I decided to let it go natural, she helped me do that slowly so it never looked like the white was growing in either. The best, however, is that I love having funky & bold colors in my hair--pink, purple, and teal. Casey is a MASTER at placing them just perfectly, and she's cooked up some magic formula that makes them last for months. I love my crazy hair colors, and Casey does them just right. I've been going to Urban Roots for years. The owners are friendly, great people who make you feel at home (great tea). The salon has a cool funky, retro vibe. Their boutique stores ... The Funky Monkey & Finders Keepers are adjacent & next store. They have unique vintage jewelry, clothes, etc. I bought my favorite jean jacket there. This was one of the most frustrating calls I've ever experienced. My daughter needs to get her hair highlighted for her senior photo (for college). She was color corrected in San Fran and she just needs her roots highlighted. The stylist I requested based on other Yelpers was Cami. No cut here, we're just talking about a touch up. Cami's husband or business partner, Matt answered the call. Matt seemed like he didn't want to book my daughter. First he told me; "Cami is booked way into the future" then, when I said I'd take her first available slot, he said " I wouldn't even consider booking your daughter without her coming in for a pre-appointment consultation." Come on, anyone who has gone away to college knows that taking two trips to a salon for color is just not possible. I would keep on looking for a helpful salon if I were you. My impressions is that this salon has attitude and not in a good way! read more

The salon has an awesome environment and the end result of the look and feel of your hair is great, but I would never return as a customer to a salon that has the audacity to "boot" it's clients because they miss two appointments over the course of 3 years. I am seven months pregnant with a complicated third pregnancy, two under two and a husband leaving in two weeks for a trip. All I wanted to do was feel good before my husband left and look good for him when he returned, but because I had an un-forseen life event I was basically told never to come back, so I definitely will not be. If you make every single one of your appointments this place is great and you'll love it. However if "shit happens" as the classic line goes, they will not be forgiving. read more
