I'm usually a bit skeptical about fancy cantonese spots, since the traditional ones feel more authentic and affordable. But I've been telling my friends how much I loved the clay pot rice and yuen yeung ice cream here! While they position themselves as cantonese american, the food menu is straight up cantonese/chinese to me, with classics like chicken pot, lobster yee mein, and har kow. To my surprise, the prices are actually pretty reasonable, and the place looks elevated with vintage posters and neon signs. ＊Roast Duck Clay Pot $26 *** Totally blown away by how good this clay pot rice was! Packed with crispy roast duck (燒鴨), chinese sausage (臘腸), cured bacon (臘肉), and quail eggs. So saucy and flavorful. If I had to nitpick, the bottom could've been a bit crispier. We shared it among three and still had leftovers for days lol. ＊Kowloon Black Pepper Beef $28 * First, can someone explain how this relates to "Kowloon" LOL. Despite the mysterious name, we really enjoyed it. The angus beef cubes were tender and saucy, just like an elevated dai pai dong style black pepper beef stir fry. ＊XO Beef Chow Fun $24 Once again, you can tell the beef is high quality. Though this was more like 濕炒牛河 ("wet" beef chow fun) rather than 乾炒牛河 ("dry" beef chow fun). ＊Satay Snow Pea Sprouts $19 I couldn't really taste the satay, but the garlicky flavor and shrimp paste really stood out. Came here for dinner with my sister on a Saturday night with a 6 PM reservation. It didn't seem too packed at the time. To start, they give you some shrimp chips, which was a nice snack - and reminded me of my childhood. It was also still happy hour at the time (I believe until 7) and they had select cocktails, beer, and wine at a discounted price. I always appreciate a weekend HH menu (and especially since the food menu here is so expensive) We ordered: -Roast Duck (steamed pancakes, sweet and savory duck sauce, scallion, chili oil, cucumber) - this was just okay. It was only duck breast, so it was a little bit dry. A mix of dark/white meat would have been nice -XO Beef Chow Fun (beef, thing rice rolls, XO sauce) - pretty basic. Not sure I tasted much XO sauce -Garlic Sauce Eggplant (bell peppers, oyster & soy garlic sauce) - this was the best dish of the night. The colors were vibrant, and it was flavorful without being too oily or salty Overall, I would say you're really just coming here for the vibes of the restaurant. Obviously, you can get all of these dishes for a fraction of the price in Chinatown, and it will taste much better. I also felt there wasn't really anything innovative about the food menu for them to charge what they're charging. But I will say that the cocktail menu is pretty unique, featuring a lot of different tea cocktails. Good crispiness on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside - Walnut Shrimp: A Cantonese classic that you do not see often in modern Chinese restaurants in NYC. There was too much mayo and the shrimp were too large, which made the dish kind of sickly. - Kowloon Black Pepper Beef: Tender, but lacked depth of flavor. - Grandma's Beef Noodle Soup: Good, but too spicy, and you cannot adjust the spice level down. - Yuen Yeung ice cream: This was my favorite thing. Starting to wonder what is up with this restaurant. I mean the food is good but they have a lot of space that they don't use. I've tried to make reservations for upstairs in their "mezzanine" and yet when we arrive we are always told it's closed upstairs. The kitchen seems tiny almost like the size of a bar (unless we aren't seeing a different cooking area) and they don't do any of the delivery apps. We have to go there to carry out. It seems like they don't want to make money. We have gone there last minute without a resy and the place will be completely empty and they tell us we have to wait for an hour or two and yet when I look at Resy there is an open reservation for like 30 mins from the time we get there and the host doesn't tell us that they tell us an hour or 2 hours. Great vibe inside the place I loved the design of it. Mainly came here for the tea but ended up getting something to eat bc the menu sounded great. Tea wise I tried the Plum Oolong, Dragonwell, Caramelized Pear, and Fresh Mint. All of them were incredibly fragrant and so delish but the Dragonwell ended up being my fav despite how peculiar the description sounded. I'm a big fan of teas but ive never had "acorn, pistachio, hay, and squash". It was very very woodsy and warm, perfect for how sharp the wind was outside. Split the Crispy Chili Beef with a friend and it was actually sooooo good. When they said crispy they MEANT IT. So crunchy even with the sauce on it, although it did say it'd be spicy but I didn't feel any heat. Overall Nomad Tea Parlor is very charming. The decor is fresh and modern. We made a reservation but it was bad timing.. there was a huge party behind us. Our drinks took an insanely long time so did the food, except for my dish. I ordered Smoked trio claypot 4/5 and ended up sharing with everyone since their food was taking very long. I didn't mind..it was a big portion. But I'm bummed the rice didn't get the chance to crisp up on the bottom. Also! They should ask if we want food brought out together or as it's ready. They mistook us for the wrong reservation twice; brought two different guests (later ended up being in the same party) to me while I was waiting for my friend. As a result, I felt that half the menu was quite interesting in taking traditional flavors and reimagining them in a smart and unique way. At times, I felt like there are some considerations that could be more thought out with the dishes, but otherwise a solid job. The atmosphere is pleasant, with a front room, large bar, and a back room containing spacious seating. I did feel the staff were a bit hard to track down at times though. (Truffle Soup Dumpling: C) - There is a nice balance between the truffle and chicken with an abundance of soup in the dumpling that tastes good. However, I felt like the technique could be refined as the skin was a bit too thick, unevenly wrapped, and the dumplings could be served in individual spoons to preserve the dumplings from popping. (Hawthorn Pork Belly: A) - This braised pork belly is driven by the luscious braising liquid that has a delicate balance between sweet and savory coming from the hawthorn and soy that goes incredibly well with some steamed white rice. This dish is simple yet elegant, although I wish more care was taken so that the pieces of pork belly each are more carefully selected to be uniform in fat and meat instead of some pieces being pure fat. (Cod Clay Pot: A) - The clay pot commands a wok hay that adds impressive flavor to the saute; the fish is beautiful seasoned, yet so simple, tender and crispy. The cabbage provided a second layer to absorb the residual flavor and the aromatics used significantly help boost the flavor. I came here for a birthday dinner and was surprised by the great service. The food itself was maybe a 3/5 - small portions of elevated Chinese American food. The best dish was the truffle chicken soup dumplings and the beef rice rolls. The eggplant was also good and the crab rangoon tasted like it had real crab in them. The staff was also very friendly and added a free pot of tea and nicely plated the cake, added a few candles, cut and served the cake, and boxed it back up for us. Short review: Outstanding cocktail but the food just wasn't remotely worth it for the price. I'd go back to try more of the drinks. This is an interesting new Chinese spot with mostly Cantonese influences along with a handful of Szechuan dishes and a few other things. The place reminds me a slight bit of Potluck Club in terms of atmosphere with the hanging signs though a good amount darker inside (especially in back) and it was a lot louder. The staff was alright. The first woman got a bit overwhelmed and eventually another waiter took over who clearly knew the menu better. I would also note that the food came out rather sporadically with my main dish arriving sooner than most appetizers which reminds me more of some of the other cheaper Canto spots. Special note goes to their outstanding cocktail. I had the Old Old New New for $19 with Woodford bourbon, Redemption rye, Ron Zacapa 23, red bean, sesame, cacao, and pu'erh which was an outstanding take on an old fashioned. It had a bit of sweetness but not too much from the bourbon and rum with a slight bite from the rye along with a faint nuttiness presumably from the sesame. I also barely tasted a bit of the pu'erh as well. I've heard that one of their other drinks was collaborated with DCP/Double Chicken Please and I would not be surprised if this one was also. I started with the Chicken Truffle Soup Dumplings which are $15 for 4 dumplings which was a bit much. The skin was a bit too thick and the tiny bit of soup in there was fine. The dumpling inside was nice and large and mostly tasted of chicken. The truffle flavor was very light with it more noticeable from the skin than the actual meat. It wasn't worth it and wasn't a particularly good XLB either and as most spots give 6 or 8 dumplings, the portion was small but at least there was a good amount of meat. My main dish was rather regrettably the Hawthorn Pork Belly for $28 with an 8 hour hawthorn infused marinade and quail eggs. I love hawthorn both from the haw flakes used in bingfen/Szechuan Ice Jelly and tanghulu to the fruit itself due to it's bright sourness and a tad bit of sweetness and I expected the pork to taste at least a bit like it. Instead, it tasted like a rather generic red braised pork/hong shao rou and a bad one at that. The pork; especially the fattier parts; wasn't that tender and the portion size is smaller than even some fancier Chinese spots. There was a bit of candied hawthorn on top which was tasty but the dish just didn't taste like it. I got a rather necessary bowl of rice with the dish which was I think $4 extra so this was $32 for this bad interpretation. Otherwise, I tried a bit of the Night Market Clams which is $26 which is wok tossed with yellow chives and black bean sauce which was better with a good sized portion of clams though 1 or 2 was still closed. The black bean sauce weren't too salty which is a good thing and the chives gave a good kick though I found they used a bit too much corn starch so it was a bit gloopy. Still a lot better though. I also tried someone's Sweet N' Sour Pork for $26 with crispy pork and caramelized pineapple glaze which was perfectly OK but not worth it at all with a small portion of meat. This is a nice looking spot with excellent cocktails so of course it is doing well on Instagram/TikTok but the food just wasn't worth it. I'd only go back to go to the bar and honestly, I'd be giving the place a 4.5 if it was the cocktail only. My boyfriend and I saw Nomad Tea Parlour on social media and decided to pay a visit. The ambiance inside was really nice and we were seated immediately (Friday at 6:30 pm, although it began filling up throughout our meal). We decided to order the scallion pancakes, kowloon pepper beef, and shrimp fried rice. The waiter highly encouraged us to get the dan dan noodles and a vegetable to accompany our meal, so we felt pressured to get the garlic eggplant. The food came out very quickly all at once and our first impression was that the portion sizes were quite small for the price. As I took the picture, a staff member came by to kindly put down a coaster with the restaurant logo to add to the picture. We enjoyed the scallion pancakes which were satisfyingly flaky, the beef was tender and juicy, and the shrimp fried rice was pretty good as well. Came by for a little girls night out and Nomad Tea Parlour was the perfect venueI I got the Neon Lights cocktail and it was delicious and sweet, kinda tasted like a green jolly rancher. I enjoyed the presentation with tableside chili oil drops, although the spice was pretty subtle. We just got snacks, not a full dinner, but all the dishes were delicious, so I would love to come back for a real meal. Dan dan noodles were delicious! Nutty, spicy, flavorful, with a good bounce to the noodles. I also got the mochi custard buns, which were INSANE. Soooo hot and crispy on the outside, which broke apart to reveal stretchy mochi and liquid egg custard. This was so decadent, I was savoring every bite. Absolutely loved this spot and can say it would be one of my favorite Cantonese spots within the city. Perfect spot to have a girls night or a date and the atmosphere is warm, inviting and nostalgic with retro signs.
