Hue House describes itself as a "four-story cultural and creative hub dedicated to celebrating the richness and diversity of Asian heritage through food, design, wellness, and cultural event programming from day to night." That's a lot of words to basically describe a building with 2-3 restaurant/bar concepts inside. The event space isn't quite ready yet, so I'll be more forgiving there, but I've visited twice now and am a bit confused they tout themselves as showcasing the diversity of Asian heritage when the cocktail vending machine out front, the Traveler menu, and 929's menu all feature just Taiwanese flavors. Yes, 929 is a cocktail bar inspired by Mandarin and Cantonese pop music. I checked them out when they were in LIC and am thrilled they've reopened in the city because their drinks are really phenomenal. The food menu has some really interesting items, like a hojicha butter bolo bao pastry and shrimp stuffed fried crullers with rainbow sprinkles on the outside. But several other menu items, like their popcorn chicken, are just Taiwanese. The menu at Traveler is even more Taiwan forward, with an oyster omelet, more popcorn chicken, and an insanely greasy fried rice on their menu. Drinks were pretty solid here too but I like 929 much better as a concept. In the front there are tea cocktail vending machines that dispense a tiny little shot of tea liquor for $8 a pop which I find ludicrous. Overall food was ok. We wanted the traditional Taiwanese food from gulp but it is not offered for dine in--only take out. The food at travelers is very modernized so really caught us off guard. The beef noodle wasn't my favorite, the sampler was too salty and just wasn't very good. The oyster omelette is not your typical oyster omelette although I did enjoy it. Something to note is that they are very strict. All outside drinks need to be deposited on a bench in the front. Drinks from downstairs cannot go upstairs and businesses cannot cross locational boundaries. Items downstairs can't be served upstairs and vice versa. Really liked the Lu rou fan and popcorn chicken. Fried rice is solid. Beef noodle soup is solid too (kind of a darker-tasting broth than normal but had generous meat). The cocktails were solid. The self service shot (I got the osmanthus citrus green tea gin one) was great. The red oolong tea vodka was okay. The machines were very faulty and dispensed really little. Went during lunchtime, so only the 1st floor was open. We sat and ate at the restaurant in the back. Jade the popcorn chicken and the beef noodle. Both were delicious. The cocktail I had (can't remember what it's called, but it had papaya foam) was pretty good. The seats that the restaurant has were strange; rounded benches that were stationary and a little far from the table. As someone with (partial) Taiwanese heritage who spent all of my childhood winters in Tainan, I was excited to hear about this ambitious "4-story project" aimed at serving up food, drinks and events based around the island. At least as of now, the actual execution is quite a disappointment. The door staff are quite frazzled and couldn't give much clarity about what the table availability or offering was inside. It was unclear whether or not anything was open above the first floor, and we ended up taking a poorly-designed standing only table on the first floor without so much as a coat hook. Given the very awkward setup, we just ordered drinks and snacks rather than a full meal. The regionally-themed drinks were fun: I opted for the Keelung-themed cocktail, which had a nice herbal note to it. For snacks, we tried the Tainan arancini, which was basically like a fried mini zhongzi, and the o-ah-jian (oyster omelette - a slight cheat for a vegetarian), which was good. read more

Currently, it houses Gulp on the first floor (a Taiwanese restaurant) and 929 (a Canto/Mando-pop bar) on the second. In the coming months, they aim to open two more floors--one of which includes a spa. We visited 929 as it was late in the evening and got to try a variety of their drinks. My two favorites were definitely their Heirloom + Folklore and their Shanghai Summer Fling. However, everything was great. Still looking for a great Taiwanese place in Manhattan, after Hue, I'm still searching... The decor was underwhelming given the hype around an authentic Taiwanese spot. I won't knock them for it though since decor and ambience do not make a restaurant. The food would but it didn't make the restaurant. The beef noodle soup has a strong tomato base flavor which is a bit different from traditional style. The noodles and meat were well cooked and flavorful. The popcorn chicken was mid at best. We had 5:30 reservations at Traveler, although walk-ins would have no problem getting seated. I've been excited to try another Taiwanese restaurant in the city, especially since they have my fave dish, oyster pancakes. We ordered that and the Tainan arancini for apps, and the beef noodle soup and steamed egg pork over rice. Everything was delicious! The arancini was crispy on the outside and sticky on the inside. It came with three, and I let my husband eat two, since I knew he wouldn't have much of the oyster pancake. The pancake definitely scratches the itch--not as "glutinous" as it is in Taiwan, and I wished there had been more oysters, but the taste was spot on and I liked the addition of dried kale (I think?) on top. The beef noodle soup was great. Noodles perfectly al dente and chewy, the beef was so tender. And the steamed egg pork was special--kind of similar to Lu Rou Fan (my husband's fave) but in an egg custard form. Really good! I had the Tainan cocktail, and the taro foam on top was so thick, I wasn't sure at first how to drink it, but it was so tasty! FYI, the seating is very much bar seating. We ate at Travelers on the first floor of Hue House. The dishes and cocktails are flavorful but the portion sizes were a bit on the smaller size. They were an adaptation of popular Taiwanese dishes. I found the pork over rice and sausage brother dishes a bit oily (but yummy). The New Year in Taipei drink had a pleasant and unique spiced flavor, which I really enjoyed. Really wanted to like this place but the experience wasn't amazing. The food itself was good, but the portions were small yet expensive. The service is what brought my overall rating down. We ordered the Taiwanese popcorn chicken, cold noodles, and braised noodle soup combo. When asked if there was an option without making it a combo, we were told no. The combo includes 3 of their daily sides. Nevertheless, we never even received our sides with the noodle soup that was part of the "combo." We also never received our cold noodles after waiting 30 minutes after our soup and popcorn chicken were brought out. When asked about the sides and the cold noodles, we were told the cold noodles take longer to prepare however by then we had already finished our other food and did not want to wait longer for the cold noodles which was meant to be an appetizer to come out. We also no longer needed the sides by then. No accountability was really taken. No one followed up to make sure we received all that was in our order either. A really rad concept to have this multi floor Asian food and drink spot with themed, seasonal menus and various price points. There's a takeout 'fast casual' joint in the front, a reservation sit down place in the back, a swanky bar upstairs and some vending machine shots in the middle. Traveler is the reservation restaurant, modeled to look like the inside of a train and currently serving Taiwanese food. The server told us the menu will change countries seasonally which is cool and definitely makes me interested in coming back. The food itself was very nice, though not particularly standout. The basil sausage brothers was my favorite of what we ordered, as well as the arancini. My friends got the sashimi boat and felt it was nothing special. But the cocktails at Traveler were very rad. Everything was based around a specific type of Asian tea, like pu-ehr or green tea or tin kuan yin, etc, all the faves. Got to try a wide variety cause I was there with three other people and pretty much everything was good. Taichung with taro foam was lovely, as was the Taipei and smokey Keelung and Taitung. I was more mixed on the 929 bar, which had immaculate vibes (the menu is printed on CDs and served in a sleeve, nostalgic) but the drinks were a little too strange for me. Not bad, just A Lot. Difficult. Very rich flavors, like truffle and cumin. Cocktails that felt more like elaborate meals than chill-out moments. Again, not bad, just nothing that felt special to me. We walked in on a Friday night and were told the wait for a table would be 1 hour so we ordered takeout from Gulp (inside the same establishment at Hue House) while we waited. Our table ended up being ready in 10 minutes so we asked if we could order drinks/food here but also eat our takeout and were told no despite explaining our situation. For me this was a pretty cool experience. When I went, we didn't make a reservation which was risky... My wife and I had a drink at the bar area on the first floor while we waited for a friend. When he arrived we went had to stand a line and the hostess was able to seat us on the 2nd floor. She made us aware that we could sit for 90 minutes max, which for me is more than enough time. We ordered several appetizers and a round of drinks and everything we ordered actually tasted pretty good. For food, I recommend their popcorn chicken and beef tartare. The drink selections were not that memorable but it's interesting that they list their drinks based on ABV (lowest to highest alcohol content). I wish we had the opportunity to see the other floors, but I forgot while we were there. It's definitely worth checking out. Not for a full meal but for a drink and light bites. read more
