Veggie egg scramble with walnut/cranberry bread

Cute little place to stop by for breakfast or lunch. Order at the counter and the servers bring the food out to you. I wish they didn't use paper plates/plastic utensils though. Bathrooms inside, credit cards accepted. -veggie egg scramble: this was just ok. No seasoning so I had to put salt and pepper on top after it was served. The walnut and cranberry bread I chose was surprisingly good though -hen and chicks: the gravy is really good and the chicken was fried well. Marble rye bread was also tasty

Despite growing up in the mid-west, I was this many years old when I found out about Starved Rock State Park in Illinois. Seeking pre hike fuel, we found Nonie's Bakery and Café just a few miles from the park entrance. These breakfast artisans are deadly & deliciously earnest about pastries. I'd guess the diner was originally a small house, renovated to retain an antiquely homey feel. The house made cranberry walnut bread translates to nutty, sharply sweet French toast (or paid perdu as Google translate has it). Scrambled eggs are fluffy, not rubbery as often happens. These geniuses also offer Country Tots: deep fried tater tots, eggs, cheese, gravy, bacon- yes, bacon too! Biscuits and gravy are perfectly balanced between filling and delicious with out the wet cement texture. Breakfast is ordered at the counter, at the end of which is the baked goods case. Chocolate cake for breakfast? Of course! The éclair was sublime, each bite initially crusty, then the creamy pastry center, enhanced by the light, sweet filling. The cheese cake pastry whose name I don't recall was substantial, but not overwhelmingly sugary nor heavy. When breakfast is done and your blood sugar has leveled out, take a quick run into town. Tucked away in north central Illinois, even Saugatuck, MI (the world's cutest town) would have to call Utica adorable, and even a snooty European chef in tall puffy white hat would have to call Nonie's Délicieux!

Nonie's is magical. My husband and I come here once, maybe twice a year before going hiking and it's always a great experience. The staff is so friendly and personable. The food is great, but we really come for the baked goods. They are INCREDIBLE. No matter what you get it is absolutely delicious we have never had something we didn't like. They have the PERFECT danish, you can't get a better danish than Nonie's. The monkey bread is CRAZY. The donuts are the perfect texture. The cinnamon rolls have the perfect dough to filling ratio. Everything is always fresh. Go to Nonie's, you will not be disappointed! We would pay up the wall for their food however their prices really can't be beat for the quality of their food.

    Very unassuming....until you get there!

Difficult to find something tasty and reasonably priced when staying in Starved Rock, but this place was the best ever! Thank you, yelp, for the suggestion! The exterior looks like it is someone's home, and this definitely added to the charm. The interior is so cute and surprisingly expansive. It even had a fireplace! There was plenty of space to sit Our 6 member family dined at this gem after researching breakfast locations. Upon our arrival we were greeted and given the run down of what their specials were. I had already researched that you go directly to the counter to order and staff will bring the food to you. The menu was huge, and this was appreciated considering half of us are vegetarians. I placed our orders and we patiently waited at one of their tables. Our food arrived approximately ten minutes later fresh and hot. Their portion sizes were pretty large for the price paid. The pancake kids meal was so big! The kids french toast sticks were nothing to write home about, but they satisfied the children's bellies. The supplements of bacon worked very well for my girls, and were very much appreciated. The true star was the Cinnamon Roll. I have never seen a Cinnamon Roll as big as this one. I was able to split it evenly amongst my 4 children and it was only $2! Value of a lifetime! The little bit I did manage to steal had icing that melted in our mouths and it tasted so fresh! Our Veggie Crossaint was equally as delicious. Garden fresh cucumbers, tomatoes, avocado, spinach, and fried egg atop a Crossaint was the breakfast I never knew to have. The tator tots accompanied it and were freshly fried and abundant. Nonie's was such a good experience that we returned the next day. Unfortunately, they were not open due to staffing issues, but I would not hesitate to drive all the way from Lemont just to get a taste. Highly recommend!

This place is great! Charming little bakery and cafe with lovely little patio. We stopped on our way to Hornbakers Gardens, and it was such a delight! Actually been here a couple other times as well. Has never disappointed. The food was delicious! Had the best blueberry muffin of my life. The biscuits and gravy were divine!

Cute little coffee shop! Pastries were really good and breakfast was decent. Tater tots were cooked perfectly! Coffee was just okay.

Order at a counter - served on paper plates and plastic silverware. Plastic & paper cups. Long detour from interstate for so-so food

The French toast combo was hot & delicious. And the cinnamon French toast latte was good, too. Everything was a good value as well.

Other than the stormy weather, the experience was enjoyable. We stayed in one of the two-story villas which was much larger than we had anticipated. We checked it quite late (10pm), and the front desk attendant gave us a map and explanation that made it quite easy for us to find our villa. Full kitchen (stocked with plates, cups, pots, etc.) , living room, two bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. A bunch of closets and space for anyone staying longer. The waterpark is not huge, but has some slides, a lazy river, a wave pool, a hot tub, and an area for smaller kids. The water was a bit cold and the hot tub was often overrun with small kids (so I didn't love that) despite signs saying its for 16+. Because of the lightening outside, the larger slides weren't being used. We ate at the cafe a few times and it was fairly mediocre. The menu is small- hot dogs, paninis, ice cream, etc. and the staff was prompt and friendly. We also did the breakfast buffet that was done in one of the banquet rooms. It was unimpressive for the price as there weren't a ton of choices. The only downsides to the experience outside of the subpar breakfast buffet would be the changes made to the 4th of July events (but that was all due to the weather) and the dirty jacuzzi tub in our villa. We definitely plan to go back and the kids had a good time!

This was, without question, the worst hotel experience my family has ever had…read more We checked in expecting a relaxing family vacation and instead spent our first night dealing with one issue after another. Our original room had blood on the sheets and visible stains on the mattress. No family should ever walk into a room in that condition. While we waited for another room, the front desk employee made what I can only describe as an incredibly inappropriate comment. She asked us, "Do you want to smoke? Hit my pen while you wait. Need a drink?" We were standing there with our children after being told our room wasn't acceptable. Whether she intended it as a joke or not, it was completely unprofessional and not something guests--especially families--should hear from hotel staff. When we were finally moved, the front desk knowingly placed us in a room without working air conditioning. We later found out from the maintenance employee that the room should not have been rented to guests at all. He was the one who told the front desk it was unacceptable, despite her telling us she had already "checked" the room. We then spent nearly three more hours waiting in the hallway with our children until almost midnight because the front desk had to text a manager for authorization to move us again. The third room was the best they could offer, but it still had stained mattresses. After what we had already experienced, we asked if housekeeping could simply place mattress protectors over them since our children would be sleeping there. We were told no because housekeeping does not enter occupied rooms. At that point, it felt like guest comfort and cleanliness were simply not a priority. The problems continued throughout the weekend. The hallway outside our room constantly smelled so strongly of marijuana that the odor seeped into our room. We specifically paid extra for a patio room, but we could barely use it because the guests next door smoked cigarettes almost constantly, making it unpleasant to sit outside. The pool was also filthy. There were clumps of hair, Band-Aids floating in the water, and a noticeable greasy film across the surface. It did not feel clean or well maintained. Our dining experience was just as frustrating. On our first night, we ordered from the restaurant being run out of the banquet hall. There were no other customers, yet after waiting nearly two hours, our meals never arrived. We eventually gave up and left hungry. Despite everything, the hotel still charged us for the fries and drinks that did come out and refused to comp them. To top it all off, management offered only a $100 credit. Considering the blood on the bedding, multiple room moves, knowingly placing us in a room without air conditioning, waiting until midnight with our children, smoke odors throughout the stay, dirty pool, poor dining experience, and the lack of concern shown by staff, the compensation was completely inadequate. We booked this trip to spend quality time together as a family. Instead, we spent our vacation dealing with problems that should never have happened at a hotel charging the rates it does. I cannot recommend staying here, and we will never return.
