Great location downtown I always looked at driving by for a couple of years. I knew they had gluten-free cupcakes and I wanted a sweet treat. I conveniently and seamlessly ordered online. They put up a menu for the day with a selected assortment. I ordered: Samoa caramel cracker cupcake - was like eating the GS cookie. Very rich with a surprise inside. My husband liked it. GF/VG strawberry and creme - dense and a little dry but good. I know it's tricky with vegan treats but this went well with tea GF/VG plain Jane - love the rainbow sprinkles and didn't feel it was anything plain but the same ia cute. Also went well with tea. The shop itself was very cute! Some couches and chairs to sit alone or a small group. Great for a meet and greet foe clients or a friend to just sit and talk. We were exploring the area and stumbled upon this cupcake place. Nora Cupcake opened in 2011. Their menu changes daily and there are 200+ rotating flavors. They offer cupcakes, cakes, and other unique confections. I got myself a pumpkin pie cupcake, oh my, that was delicious. It was perfectly moist with marshmallow on top and a creamy filling. Al's ice cream shop is right next door and I was told that Nora's sells cupcakes everyday 10a-4p and ice cream during that time. Al's ice cream Shop sells ice cream 4-8p and cupcakes as well. I just want to say I think that's super smart. They post their flavors once they close, for the next day I placed an order online and I picked it up the next morning. They kept it in the refrigerator for me. Walking in was a nice vibe, quiet and clean. They have the flavors of the Day cupcakes in the display case as you walk in. I tend to cut my cupcakes in half and freeze them, so when I want something sweet I can grab a half at a time. I did try a few of the flavors, as I was cutting them to put them away. I really like the buttercream and I read another review that there is possibly shortening being used and I'm hoping that's not the case. I feel like I tasted butter and I thought it was tasty. I do agree they are a bit sweet, the buttercream is a bit sweeter than I like it. But the texture and flavor is amazing! I can't believe it's taken me so long to finally stop by. My friend I stopped by after having lunch nearby. There was plenty of street parking located conveniently on Main street but it could gave been that it because it was not a weekend day. Love the whole vibe of the place. We were greeted by a lovely young lady who helped us with our order. The selection of cupcakes for the displayed as you enter the place. The selection was small but there was a good variety of cupcake to choose from. They also had gluten free options as well. We ended up getting a coffee oreo cupcake and Parisian for ourselves to eat later as well some cupcakes to bring home to share with family. We also decided we wanted to have some ice cream as well. I went in on Christmas Eve for some last minute Grinch cupcakes after brunch at Eli Cannon's and it was just perfect. Since opening on NYE in 2011, they have been offering a menu of traditional cupcake flavors, custom cakes, vegan and gluten free options, signature cookies and treats. They really knocked it out of the park with their holiday cupcakes this year! Owner Carrie does such a great job. Below are the amazing holiday cupcakes this year--my favs were The Grinch, Buddy the Elf and Bruce the Spruce. But really---they all were so delicious! So I've always heard the rave reviews about NoRa, but had actually never stopped in before until my friend told me about the Harry Potter sorting hat cupcake that was being featured. Well of course we both had to make a journey to Middletown then just for a cupcake, because why wouldn't you? We both were sorted into Slytherin (boo, Gryffindor for life) and the flavors were absolutely delicious. I washed mine down with an iced coffee that was very flavorful as well. I'm not a cupcake connoisseur, but I have tried a few places in my lifetime, and I always look for these three things, in this order: 1) Moisture of the cake 2) Sweetness of the icing 3) Creamyness of the icing I'd like to think most people with a sweet tooth use these same criteria for judging. Luckily, NoRA does well on all ends. Although all looked amazing and original, we went for the most popular: The Irish Car Bomb. The cake was just extremely moist and good on its on, while the icing struck the perfect balance of decadence without being cloyingly sweet, needing a pint of milk to go with it. Along with that, the icing wasn't stiff and hard, as with other places that go for this route. While the price point is a bit high for Middletown at $5, I think if you're looking to reward yourself, this is the place to go. Recently, I was super excited to get my hands on a Funfetti. However, they are never as delicious as I want them to be. NoRA's social media game is strong for good reason - they are pretty darn great. I think I've stopped in 5x now (always traveling at least 20+min for each trip) and have been so enthralled by their most recent cupcake creation that I have gone from car to cupcake counter back to the car again, not even exploring the rest of the shop! I finally rectified that on September 1. This most recent visit was for the Harry Potter sorting hat cupcake, which was a chocolate cupcake, chocolate frosting, chocolate-dipped cone as the sorting hat, and then a surprise color inside to 'sort' you into a Hogwarts House (#SlytherWin). The cupcake itself was good and another fantastic example of their creativity when it comes to presentation. I ordered a coffee and actually stayed a while and was even more a fan. The interior is a bit punk-artsy vintage and has a chill personality. The space is much larger than it seems from the front and everything was incredibly clean. Stopped off on the way back from Clinton Crossing to see what all the hubbub is about. The inventory was definitely depleted, and half a dozen varieties were gone. We took home an Irish Car Bomb, a Black Forest Cake, and a Carrot Cake. We split them into thirds and made our own tasting plates. The word disappointment comes to mind regarding the car bomb- to me it was just like a chocolate cupcake- no hint of Baileys at all. The Black Forest was very good, with a gooey core of chocolate yumminess. The Carrot cake was pretty good - sweet, raisony, nutty, nice cream cheese frosting. How is it that I've never reviewed NoRA?? Best cupcakes around and super wonderful owner! I always loved Eli's so when Carrie moved across the street to open NoRA, of course I was going to give it a try. I've been MANY times and I've never been disappointed. All of the flavors are great, there is something for everyone. My absolute favorite flavor is the key lime pie. I'm not a chocolate cake kind of girl, but my husband is and we are always both happy with our selections from NoRA. If you like them on Facebook, you'll see the daily selections pop up in your newsfeed. There are original flavors (like Fat Elvis), as well as old standbys, and everything is always fresh and tasty. These cupcakes are not cheap, I know people complain about that. But they are worth it! And if you're dining downtown and willing to spend $10 on a martini at Tuscany Grill or $20 for a foie gras appetizer at Esca...honestly, at that point, what's another $4 for a cupcake? And let's face it, you know if you go for froyo instead you will spend at least $7 once you add all of your toppings! Maybe it's not an every day stop...but they are great for a fix when you've had a bad day, when you have a celebration at home or work, or when you just want a cupcake that looks like it was on the winning display of Cupcake Wars. The cupcakes are pricey (I paid $4 for one recently) BUT I have yet to have a dry or tasteless one which leads me to believe that they are not selling day old (or leftover) cupcakes. So until this happens I will happily continue to consume these delightful desserts. OMNOMNOM My first NoRa encounter was at the Yelp Christmas thing at the New Britain Museum of Art and I was super impressed. I think I had the Irish Car Bomb there. I never am in Middletown so it took me a while to get out here and try them for realsies. I've had an Apple Bourbon cupcake and the Raspberry Arnold Palmer, both were delicious, although if I had to pick one I'd say the apple bourbon was the best. It also took me about eighty years to make up my mind what I wanted, they aaaaalllllll looked so good. Can't wait to go back! A fun cupcake shop with a wide selection. I've stopped in here a few times and the appeal for me are the vegan options. The vegan double stuff cupcake from a few days ago was one of the best cupcakes I have ever had. Not only were the frosting and cream filling outstanding, but the cupcake itself was moist too. I tried a couple of vegan cupcakes on a prior visit and those were excellent as well. The hours are great, as they stay open until 10 on Fridays and Saturdays. They're open 10-7 otherwise from Tuesday-Thursday and Sunday. The prices are moderate for cupcakes, but given the quality, I think the value is good. While they have vegan as well as gluten-free options, I wish they'd have more variety in those offerings. Out of 26 cupcakes this past Friday, there was only one vegan and two gluten-free options.
