The Normal Square Inn is a bar/restaurant way the heck out on Normal Square...go figure. The bar area is okay, nothing special. The normal beer signs and sports stuff decorating the inside...nothing I haven't seen before. I ate dinner here and was a bit disappointed. The menu was pretty large, especially considering the...modest...atmosphere in the dining room. Maybe it was just the night I was there, but I tasted three different dishes and two of them were overcooked. Not inedible, just not great. Certainly not worth the $20 bucks they charge for veal or steak that's overdone. On the other hand, they have another room for the bar food, apparently. I would have no problem coming back and skipping the 'formal' meal and just having a burger or wings with some beer. I think the Normal Square Inn would be just fine for that. read more

Well the place has a very nice vibe when you walk in. However this is just that a vibe the service was extremely slow and our waitress was very curt with us and seemed like she did not want anything to do with us. We waited about 20-30 minutes just to get our drinks and over an hour and a half for our food. Personally I asked for my steak medium and when I received it it was clearly well done, I could not imagine sending it back because I did not want to wait another couple hours. The steak had no flavor and it was the same story for a couple others with us. The food was clearly over priced and not worth the expense. From my experience I would not recommend anyone go there for any reason. I don't know what to say but it was a terrible experience. read more

Do NOT eat here! READ WHY: Told prior to my reservation certain foods were homemade. The restaurant was empty yet we waited over an hour to be seated with prior reservation. Food was stale, over cooked, made incorrectly and gave me food poisoning. The chef came out of the bathroom 28 minutes later! Why? The staff did not even apologize or offer to make better. Went tonight with my mom. We were early ( 4:30) and seated right away. Waitress came right over with menus and drink orders. She was friendly and helpful with ordering. Next came nice hot rolls with a small vat of butter. Salad was fresh and the blue cheese dressing tasty. I ordered the salmon which was the special. I choose to have it blackened. It was perfectly cooked and delicious. Nice baked potato on the side. Waitress was quick to refill drinks. I even enjoyed the unsweetened iced tea with nice lemon wedges. I couldn't help but glance at other trays of food being brought out, and everything looked good! I highly recommend this place. Nice comfy atmosphere with linen tablecloths and napkins and a candle on the table. Give it a try. I think it's a gem! read more

decided to have a bite out there was three people in our party We got there around 6:30 on 3/16 The lady who met us at the door was so nice she sat us quite quickly. We waited about 15 minutes for our waitress, finally she came out to take our order, I asked her about the crab cakes, simple question, I just wanted to know if they were deviled or lump, 15 to 20 minutes passed finally she came back all she said was she still didn't know but they weren't made with imitation crab, finally she she took our drink order 1 coke 2 waters my husband got his coke took another 5 min. for us to get our water. Still did not take our order, I noticed the table behind had there order taken soon after we got seated, they were eating I did notice their food wasn't that appealing and their drinks were served half full, An hour after we sat the waitress took our order we ordered the soup it was supposed to be crap and leek, steak and 2 seafood platters,the soup was included, no joke another hour and the waitress came out and said the soup was now crab and cauliflower we were so hungry we agreed after more time we were done I started talking to the family who sat behind me she told me they had reservations and still waited a long time to be seated, and their food was bad, We decided to leave went to the bar said we would pay for our soup, No lie waited another 15 min. for that then the waitress came with our food we said no I asked to talk to the owner because my bill was $14 was 3 cups of over salted soup, he was very rude made no apologies while we were there we saw 4 tables leave very upset at the wait time, food or both.All in all came at 6:30 and didn't get out of there til about 9 hungry wish I could give no stars read more

I haven't been here recently and my wife and I needed a break and felt like a night out. We like to sit and have dinner at the bar where we can talk to the people coming and going. I was a little concerned after reading some of the recent reviews but we never had a bad meal here so off we went. Our bar person Judy was very pleasant and prompt. We were ordering off the early bird menu. I had the baked haddock which was excellent. My wife had a garden salad and oriental soup both which she said was fresh And very tasty. After we ate Mike the owner and chef came out and casually spoke to us. We never had a bad meal here and am wondering if some of these bad reviews are from disgruntled employees we don't see working there any more. We will go back. read more

We arrived and stood at the bar for more than five minutes and was totally ignored by the bartender. Adventure Lee the hostess came out and was also going to ignore us when the couple who arrived behind us made it known that we were next to be seated. We decided we would wait 20 minutes and our server arrived in 19. All in all we were there for 45 minutes we were not given a glass of water nor our beverages from the bar. Basically I come here for the wings and beer. Everything else I stay away from usually. The food there is really pricey and it's not even that good. My fiancé got the hamburger once and you can tell it was a frozen patty with an oversized bun. It was an expensive hamburger too. I just stick with the wings because it's the only good thing they have there. Victory Pils, Peroni, Murphy's Irish Stoudt, and other popular flavors, can be found on draught at times. Full bar, with a good wine selection. Great soup dishes, with savory daily specials. Entrees are all correctly prepared to order, very filling dishes with fresh vegetable sides. Fish is fresh, meat is cooked to order, chicken is tender and juicy, menu is very well represented from all styles and very large. Prices are moderate for the area, but are very inexpensive if you are no local. The high quality and presentation is represented with the true committment of a family owned restraurant. Reservations are probably going to be needed if you go during a busy hour, the atmosphere is full of chattering friends enjoying the company of each other while engaging in an excellent dining experience. After giving a 5-star review two years ago, I've downgraded a bit. The family ate there a few days ago. My son ordered a steak 'medium,' which he said was overdone and didn't taste like anything. I ordered a veal and shrimp dish in sauce. The veal was kind of tough and there was way too much sauce. It looked soupy. My wife and daughter ordered the same chicken dish, but our waitress accidentally entered two different dishes into the computer. So when our food came, the waitress apologized, but my daughter had to sit and wait until her chicken dinner was prepared. Me and my family have come here a few times now and every time we leave as disappointed as the last time we visited. The one bright side to this restaurant is that the food is consistently decent enough for us to take a chance on coming back. That however is the only positive. Even though the food is good it is over priced and to be honest not worth breaking the bank for. If I were to describe the type of service we received I would call it pathetic. We waited long amounts of time for simple things like getting us all new drinks and bringing the check, it took so long to bring our food out we considered just leaving. Meanwhile I could see our waitress tending to a newborn baby in the kitchen while we waited and waited. Never again will we be returning to Normal Square Inn. First of all we were there for dinner on a non-busy Friday night. The service was beyond slow. We had to repeat our very simple order several times and still received the wrong food. We had a child with us, we ordered the chicken fingers meal for him for $8.95 (no drink included or dessert), when his dinner arrived it was 2 chicken strips and about 10 french fries and the drink was an additional $3.00...really??????? We go to any other restaurant and a children's meal at the very least includes a drink if not also dessert. My boyfriend got chicken wings...complete disappointment and I had the Haddock with soup and salad. I eat Haddock all the time, this was absolutely disgusting. It tasted as if it was going bad. We used to go here all the time and now the last 3 times we have been there our experience with not only service, but the food quality has been very disappointing to say the least. The service was so slow that our meals were actually barely warm when they arrived and it was not even a busy Friday night, we were 1 of 3 tables in the dining room. Our server never came back to check on us and she had an attitude when I told her that I had the wrong soup. I didn't tell her that my salad dressing was incorrect because of her attitude. I would go to Taco Bell before I return to Normal Square Inn and I do not eat fast food. Beyond disappointing! read more

Very sad. We've ate dinner there 3 times; right after they reopened, this past December and tonight. The first visit we raved about the food and service, how we ordered something that wasn't on the menu and the chef accommodated us as (which is stated on the menu to ask) he made Jagerschnitzel. They were'nt open to the public, but they seated us anyway and we had a great time. The meal in December was average and the service was the same. Tonight however was unacceptable. We started with the special appitizer, spicy clams. We had our soup served before the clams. The soup was also a clam soup, which was tasteful. Then the clams came out. They looked appitizing enough. My husband rarely spits out his food, but he couldn't chew these. He gave it a second try, still no good. I tried two, very rubbery. The flavor was right on, but they were so overdone, you couldn't chew them. So, we sat them aside and waited for the waitress to take them away. She came after several minutes and asked if we were done with them. We stated that we were, they were overdone and tough. She seemed to take it personnally as though she cooked them herself. Ok, now the main dish arrives; catch of the day (tuna) for my husband, and veal picatta with lump crab for me. The tuna was just as bad as the clams, he thinks it was frozen when they started cooking it. It was gray due to overcooking. The veal was tough and chewy. Again, the flavors were right on, but the food was still undigestable. We paid the bill in full, no apologies or discounts were given for the returned clams. We do not eat out often, nor do we return food. This was not a good experience. We could have done better at home ourselves. That is the last time we will visit or recommend this establishment. :( read more
