During a recent weekend visit to Jim Thorpe and after having eaten a lot of bar food my wife & I accidentally came upon this wonderful restaurant and oh what an awesome discovery it was too. From the beautifully decorated interiors, the very friendly and welcoming staff, the wonderfully crafted cocktails, our appetizers, and finally to the entrees -- everything was perfect. I highly recommend the cabbage salad. But my wife's roasted chicken and my beef short ribs were equally as delicious. The chef's delicate use of roasted garlic, rosemary, and white wine while preparing my wife's dish and the wonderful port wine reduction used to prepare the sauce for my beef all point to one certain thing -- Chef Yunda is a genius. I really wanted to like Moya, especially after reading about the chef's New York background and the promise of "gourmet eclectic cuisine," but I left wondering where the eclectic part was. The menu is actually quite small and pretty conventional. We had the octopus salad, pasta, and rack of lamb. Nothing was awful, but nothing felt special either--and for these prices, "fine" just isn't enough. I've had better versions of the same dishes elsewhere for less. Also, sides cost extra, which feels a little much considering the entrée prices. Ironically, the drink list seems more extensive than the food menu. The restaurant is also described as having an "elegant setting," but the lighting was so bright it felt more like early dinner service than an intimate upscale restaurant. Overall, Moya seems to be priced and marketed as a special dining experience, but the food, menu, and atmosphere didn't quite get there for me. We arrived a bit early for our reservation at 6pm, the main (bar) area was empty and we were seated at a table for two in the main area for 32 dinner guests. I have no idea why but it was so loud for only 10 occupants and drowned out the r&b or hip/hop music that we thought was playing. Thankfully the noisy group left shortly later but we were stuck in the center of the area which did not feel upscale, more fast food feel. The meal arrived quickly and honestly lacked texture/taste. Unfortunately we left unfulfilled mainly because we did not understand that servings did not cover your food groups; nor did we want to spend $30 for a protein each and then an extra $8-10 per side. Along with paying extra for a simple house salad and not serving bread. For the price; the presentation and atmosphere just don't jive with the culinary expectation listed on their web site. Finally, watching server sitting at a table conversing with a guest she knew where a future guest would sit. Does that mean the table gets re-cleaned? Moya sits on Race Street--one of the most beautiful and historic little streets in town--and the setting is just as much a part of the experience as the food itself. The restaurant is tucked into the hand-built stone rowhouses, surrounded by vibrant colors, artwork, and even a few birds outside the windows. It caught my eye right away, and I'm glad it did. Note for diners: Moya is closed Monday-Wednesday, and I'd recommend making a reservation if you can. I visited on a very busy weekend in Jim Thorpe and managed to get seated around 4:30pm on Saturday without one, but the restaurant filled quickly and I think I got lucky. Inside, the space is eclectic and beautiful--rich colors on the walls, abstract art throughout (which I later learned is by the chef's wife, who co-owns the restaurant and has her studio in the same building). The atmosphere felt upscale yet comfortable, and the quiet dining room was perfect for good conversation. Our total bill came to $95.90 before tip, and it was worth every penny. Moya's menu is designed for sharing, and that's exactly what we did. Drinks: Pineapple Cosmo ($13) - perfectly sweet without being over the top, even enjoyed by a bourbon drinker. Apple Brandy Sidecar ($14) - well-balanced and beautifully made. Plates we shared: Burrata ($18) - served warm on focaccia with an olive & herb tapenade. My first time trying burrata, and I loved it. The warmth was unexpected but wonderful, and the tapenade set it off perfectly. Fresh Gnocchi ($29) - with jumbo lump crab meat and fresh tomato cream sauce. The gnocchi were perfectly dense without being heavy, and the crab chunks were huge--bigger than the gnocchi themselves! So fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. Prosciutto Salad ($18) - spinach, dried figs, gorgonzola, spiced candied nuts, balsamic glaze. Generous prosciutto on top, and the dried figs added such a clever texture and depth. A lighter dish that paired beautifully with the richness of the burrata and gnocchi. What stood out most about Moya's food was its simplicity. No over-complication, no excess of ingredients--just perfectly chosen flavors that worked in harmony and allowed each element to shine. Every dish felt thoughtful and intentional. Service was excellent--attentive without being intrusive. The bathrooms were clean, the vibe inside was intimate, and everything about the evening felt special. No on-site parking, but there's plenty of street and community parking nearby, and Jim Thorpe is a lovely walking town. My suggestion? Spend the afternoon strolling through town, enjoy dinner at Moya, then take a romantic walk down to the train tracks and water afterward. Moya isn't an everyday dinner spot for me, but it's absolutely on my list for celebrating something special--or just celebrating each other. read more

Started off decent, we liked the ambiance and vibe of the bar walking in. We had a reservation for 8:00, it wasn't too crowded but crowded enough to think that we would really enjoy our meal. The first thing that we noticed that was interesting was the eerie music playing. At first I thought it wasn't bad, but the longer we stayed the creepier the restaurant became. More people left and the unlit street outside was pretty creepy as well. Drinks were decent but service was surprisingly slow and seemed a bit understaffed for a Saturday night which I thought was weird. Our appetizer was the melted mozzarella on focaccia with chimichurri and honey (too much of both). The bread was super soggy and cheese was half melted and wet as well. We decided to split the side of potatoes and the half chicken. Chicken was seasoned fine but the texture seemed almost raw. The potatoes presentation and taste were not great and there was not much flavor. Everything was wet in the worst way possible. We were in Jim Thorpe for the weekend and I booked this restaurant hoping for something special. It ended up being our least favorite meal unfortunately. But also our most expensive meal. We came back this year for another wonderful fall festival in Jim Thorpe and decided to return to this restaurant we've enjoyed in the past. The food was just as good as we remembered. I love ordering small plates to get to taste multiple dishes, especially the flatbread pizza and burrata salad. Unfortunately, it didn't feel as kid-friendly this time around. While we appreciated being moved to a table by the front window, my partner overheard a comment from the staff suggesting they weren't thrilled to be serving our family. That was disappointing, especially since our kids were mostly quiet and slept through most of the meal after a long day. It was pretty disspointing to hear this remark. We spent over $200 for our meal, tipped generously and felt like we had a friendly exchange with our server throughout the night. We enjoyed the food and wine, but the unwelcoming attitude took away from what could have been a great evening. We've had dinners at so many nice restaurants, including Michelin meals in Los Angeles and DC with our kids. We always felt welcomed. It made me so disappointed to hear that our server felt this way. Luckily a family member unexpectedly recommended this restaurant to us and we were able to get a reservation for a Saturday night just two days in advance ! Moya is a bit tucked away off the main drag in an adorable old building. The inside is vibrant and contemporary with relaxing ambiance. Our server was absolutely amazing. We got tons of water refills all night and food came out relatively fast. This is a tapas style restaurant. The portions are slightly bigger than traditional tapas (win win!) which makes it enjoyable to share with the table. The four is us ordered 7 dishes and it was perfect! Come hungry, you'll want to eat tons here and try a lot. The food was perfectly cooked and felt very gourmet and high end. I didn't think regular chicken could taste so so good. My favorite might have been the mushrooms, rigatoni, or burrata ..... the burrata was really really delicious. I wish we could've tried more pasta. Based off what I've seen in this town the few times I've been here this is one of if not the nicest restaurant! Moya is truly the secret in Jim Thorpe, PA. Yes, the train ride is scenic, the trolley ride is entertaining, and the museums rich with the history of the town's metamorphosis. But there is one restaurant that's a hidden piece of anthracite in that coal mine, and that's Moya. Let's start with the ambiance - we were there early on a Friday and had a quiet table upstairs. It was very pleasant. The complimentary bread and olive oil were delicious and a great way to start the meal. I had read the crab cakes were good (Yelp review) and we decided to get them. I lived in Maryland for 30 years, so I know crab cakes. These were very good - the crab tasted fresh, the seasoning and breading, with the cilantro salsa, were perfect, . It passed the MD test. Next up, the braised short ribs and fusilli - a dynamic duo that you'll find very difficult to match....anywhere. Again, I had read a review which said the short ribs were a little on the sweet side...I like a savory-sweet beef sauce, which this was. The ribs were savory, lean and moist, and melted in my mouth. I always order my pastas with my entree - in this case, both were entrees, which we shared. The reason, take a bite of short rib with the creamy mushroom pasta, and you're in heaven. The fusilli was layered with mushrooms and the creamiest goat cheese sauce you could imagine. We ended the meal with the chocolate mousse, which was rich, creamy and very chocolaty. However, with only the fresh blueberries and a sprinkling of sugar, it seemed like it needed a lift. Maybe those berries could have been sautéed and reduced with a fresh whipped cream. Fabulous. We were fortunate to get last minute reservations while visiting Jim Thorpe. Definitely the place for true foodies. Small plates, big on flavor. We shared their Antipasti, Boneless Beef Short Ribs, and sautéed potatoes. The flavor was truly amazing. Small space, with brightly decorated walls. We had a really nice dinner here while visiting for the weekend. The interior is really charming. The artwork is really beautiful. We had a great dinner. The octopus salad was super fresh and tasty. The pasta dishes were spectacular. The bronzino came with wonderful mushrooms. We all had desserts to go which were a nice treat for later. They kindly served us the scoop of coconut sorbet before we left since it would have melted as a takeaway. This is definitely a nicer restaurant so a little more expensive than some of the pubs around town but we really enjoyed ourselves and the food was a little more creative and interesting. The only weird thing was that in a nearly empty restaurant (we arrived early) they sat us right next to the only other table with guests. And the next guests they put immediately next to us, behind us. The place didn't fill up before we left...so it was odd to be so packed in like that. Did not live up to the hype. Our party visited on a Sunday evening about 7:30pm. We had several apps and mains and overall were disappointed on the quality of the food esp for what it costs. For $240 including tax and 20% gratuity, we had: caprese, avocado salad, cheese plate, seared yellowfin tuna, fusili pasta, pappardelle pasta, flatiron steak, haddock (daily special), sautéed potatoes, sautéed broccoli, and flatbread, and 2 beers. There were maybe 3 tables including ours so I'm surprised at the level of service and quality of food received. I could understand if it was very busy and understaffed. Flatiron steak ordered medium rare came out medium-well to well done. When the waitress came over I told her I ordered medium rare and showed her my plate. She looked at it and said "that is medium rare" and I said it's definitely not medium rare. Then she asked if I wanted to send it back. Ofc I did. Second steak came out about 20-25 minutes later (way too long) and it was medium rare in the center and medium/medium-well on the sides/edges. It was close enough and since everyone else had finished eating by them, I let it go. I would not recommend or reorder. The fish special Haddock was too salty. You literally had to eat it with other food to diminish the saltiness. I would not recommend or reorder. Caprese and avocado salad were solid. I'd reorder them. Both pastas come in tiny side dish size bowls. It's about a kids portion of pasta lol. Taste was OK. Definitely nothing to write home about. Overall we were disappointed with our meal and service. I love the cozy atmosphere and the decor. It's located on a secluded back road of Jim Thorp. The food was very tasty and fresh. All that said , the portions are really small and expensive. We visited Moya last year and absolutely loved it. Went last night and it was good but not outstanding. Moya has to decide what they want to be . If they want to be a fine dining experience they've got to step it up - go all the way! First and foremost they must train their staff . In a small town like Jim Thorpe I would imagine many people haven't been exposed to the fine dining experience . A lot of what we had was quite good. My husband loved his salad, but his boulavardia was much too bitter. My cocktail was tasty but so full you had to be extremely careful not to spill . In addition, no garnish on the drink at all . I had the Branzino which was very delicious, but my husband's steak was over done and the presentation was pretty poor. The tables are so small you can hardly fit everything and enjoy it . My last issue- our daughter called the restaurant to buy a bottle of wine for my husbands birthday. We had just ordered a glass of wine she my husbands phone rang and the waitress saw my daughter's name and remembered. I guess at this point I should have spoken to the manager, but they should have comped us the wine we had just ordered. Bit we were happily relocated on our request to a quieter table . Jazmin gave a warm and friendly greeting and laid my apprehension of Moya a side, Had the octopus salad and the pasta bolognese. Moya was a great find in downtown Jim Thorpe. Everything we ate was simply delicious. The service was top-notch and decor was really wonderful. All the paintings in the restaurant are painted by the Owner and Executive Chef's wife - a nice touch. Moya has a "Tapas Style" menu were all the protein dishes are stand-alone and we had to order our vegetables and starches separately. The bill can add up quickly, but it's a nice place for a special occasion. The Tuna was cooked perfectly; pink on the inside with a nicely seared crispy outer edge. The pan roasted Branzino was outstanding. By far, the best Branzino preparation I have personally ate. The Handmade Gnocchi, as other reviewers state, was sooo good. A heavy creamy dish, but good! We had to throw a vegetable in there, so ordered the Sautéed Vegetable Medley, which for vegetables was tasty. To complete out our meal, the Creme Brûlée delivered an excellent sweet ending. I really expected more based on some of the recommendations but we found ourselves underwhelmed. It was our wedding anniversary so I had hoped it would feel special but the atmosphere is lacking. Tables are tight, but luckily it wasn't very busy. Main courses were fine, mozzarella in the caprese salad was bland, cheese plate appetizer was expensive and boring to look at (had to make the pita last because not much was provided, most cheese was good but I'm not sure what they were), the only really exceptional dish was the apple salad, otherwise I would have given 3 stars. Staff was kind and helpful and that half glass of soda pictured was $4 and no refills - I'm not cheap but really? My husband and I had dinner here the other night and it did not dissapoint. For drinks, i had the white sangria (part of the night's specials) and my husband got the red cabernet sauvignon wine. I highly recommend the white Sangria, it had pineapples and blueberries at the bottom, very tasty and refreshing. For appetizers we both shared the flat bread which was fresh and light. For our dinner we shared the pappardelle and fusilli pasta, both great options and the roasted sea bream. If you like seafood, definitely try the sea bream! It had avocados, tomatoes and cilantro salsa on top. Our server was Maxine and she was very attentive and patient with our questions. Would not revisit. Had an 8:15pm reservation. We arrived early 7:30pm starving. We were told by reception lady (who had attitude) that the bar upstairs was insanely full and they were very busy and she would let us know when our table was available. So we decided to go upstairs to the bar passing several empty tables. There were only 5 people at bar area. Hmmm. At 7:45pm I went downstairs and found 7 tables of 2 unoccupied, and upstairs there were 3 tables of two and a table of 4 unoccupied. Many never had people sit down the whole time we waited and some rotated as empty/full. She made us wait until 8:15pm on the dot for a table. I counted 4 tables downstairs and three upstairs unoccupied. Good customer service would have seated us at first available and not leave that many tables empty while having patrons wait. I felt like we were being played and lied to. Would not eat here ever again. Our server was fantastic however. We did have dirty dishes on our table we had to ask to get replaced. Crab Gnocci and mushroom/beans was great. (4 star) Potatoes and Branzino fish not so much (2 star). Atmosphere was bright with color (4 star). Vibe from reception lady was nasty (0 star) and we were lied to was our impression. Customer impressions should always be front and center if you want patrons to return. I remember when we walked in and were talking to her initially, another couple followed us in and when they heard they were insanely busy, they left, which was not the truth. Wow.... Just WOW!!!!!! First time in this town and was not expecting anything amazing for food options, no offense Jim Thorpe...But of course I yelp searched and lo and behold Moya was one of the top choices... so quickly called them when they opened at 5 and was able to score a same day reservation! Jim Thorpe is a very hilly town and the blocks are very short so it was a nice quick literal 6 minute walk from where we were staying to the restaurant. Once you enter you are greeted at the bar with the hostess. We were promptly seated, and our waitress happened to be Maxine, the proprietor's daughter and main reason why the chef and his wife moved to Jim Thorpe and opened Moya. I loved that the family worked in the restaurant together! Chef is from Ecuador but has been cooking for over 30+ years for heads of state and such. Even though the restaurant is labeled under American cuisine, it is so far from that and more than that. The restaurant name, Moya, is a nod to the town chef grew up in too. Onto the food! The menu suggests that all dishes here are shareable, and it is so not a lie. We ordered from pretty much every category of the menu... Started the night with the smoked trout cold appetizer. This was amazing! Smoky and flavorful but not too salty nor a smoke bomb of fish. The accompanying chilled potato salad with spicy wild arugula, green apple slices and a light citrus based dressing was the perfect combo to the trout. Next up was the housemade crab agnolotti pasta in a decadent saffron cream sauce... Usually when you get a stuffed pasta, you have the main ingredient mentioned on the menu with a lot of filler veggies and spices with it. Not here! The agnolotti was ALL crabmeat inside with a touch of parsley. Like freaking WHOA. Pasta was cooked to a perfect aldente and the saffron cream sauce was one where I wanted to get a tub of it and devour it. We had to order their delicious housemade flatbread as well because we couldn't let the sauce go to waste. The sauteed mushrooms came out with this and again holy wow. The mushrooms were perfectly sauteed and balanced with generous pieces of crispy pancetta and hearty white beans that did not come from a can. It was a perfect combo that I will definitely replicating at home! Next up was the 20 oz. Rack of lamb chops...a steal at $36 and the midst expensive item on the menu but worth every penny! Beautifully cooked to the temperature we asked and seasoned with simple salt and some pepper. It was melt in your mouth delicious. I forgot to get shots of the sauteed broccoli with shallots and olive oil and the lovingly truffle oil drenched, thank you chef!, warm potato triangle chunks with scallions! We rounded the meal out a delicious tres leches cake that was truly fresh made tres leches cake. The price to portion here is perfectly done as well! We had a reservation for 7 PM but arrived early, so we decided to go upstairs for a drink while we waited. The restaurant features beautiful artwork throughout. When we were seated in the main dining room by the window, we found our server to be very nice; however, the service was relatively slow. We waited over 20 minutes for her to take our order. Fortunately, the food came out quickly in comparison, and it was quite good. After finishing our meal, we had to wait an additional 20 minutes to have our food boxed up and to receive our check. Another downside was that they charge for soda refills without informing customers, and the glasses are quite small. These little details make me hesitant to return. read more

The service is amateurish at best. Entrees were served in small bowls which was awkward because you had to dig to find the ingredients to your entree. The side dish of sautéed potatoes were tasteless. I had to send the boneless short ribs back. One bite was all I needed. Did the chef eyeball the salt and decide to use the entire container? The waitress told me that I could order something else but had to pay for the short ribs. I said absolutely not. My friend was almost finished with dinner so instead of ordering a new entree I only had time for a salad. Very upsetting. The chef's wife came over with a lot of apologies claiming that her husband was sick (WTF) in the kitchen and wasn't tasting the food. We were given free desserts. They were OK. We had Tres Leches cake which was sloppily garnished and a very dull looking lemon almond cake served with delicious coconut sorbet. The avocado salad was good but the cheese plate was disappointing because the pita was stingy and so were garnishes. In other restaurants when I had cheese plates there were little signs that came with each cheese which is a nice touch. One last note: the acoustics are horrible. The place is very very loud. My friend and I could barely hear each other, sitting across from each other at a table for 2, over the other the loud conversations at the tables around us. read more

The #1 food recommendation in Jim Thorpe from my personal experience and from all locals. Across all courses, the food was just simply delicious and was prepared extremely well. A bartender highly recommended our entire meal, as its her favorites, and we couldn't be happier. The server was very nice, figured we were out of towners and had good recommendations and knowledge of the menu. Good malbec paired with the octopus salad as an app, lamb shank and sun-dried tomato gnocchi was perfect for two! The octopus salad was perfectly prepared and very fresh, and a great way to start a meal! The lamb shank was the star of the meal and would highly recommend. The gnocchi was also delicious but completely blown out of the water by the lamb shank. Could've eaten two :) The creme brule was the best way to end the meal and was perfectly silky and delicious! A great find in a tourist town. A small, beautiful restaurant that serves good food at reasonable prices. I'm slow to come to the small plates concept but we liked all that we ordered. We weren't crazy about the "fried broccoli." It was underwhelming. Coming from NYC the final cost of around $60 per person was welcome. Our waitress was slow to take the order but once it got rolling the service staff was right there, serving and bussing right on schedule while being very polite and cordial. It was a nice evening. A shout-out to the artwork. Possibly from the same artist, well coordinated and beautiful. read more
