I have always wanted to stop at the Norse Nook in Osseo. Always been pressed for time. Didn't realize they had more than 1 location. Had the pleasure of trying it out at the Rice lake location. Typical diner style, simple but if you like pie this is your stop. Not much on the menu for vegans, I had their hash browns, they were fresh cut and super thin. I have never had hash browns like that before. Amazing. My family all got the burgers. They all gobbled them up and said they were very good. Then pie... We got the apple and chocolate mint. Both were like something from heaven. Homemade crust flakey and crispy and a little chewey in parts. Fresh apples, no cans at this place. Less pie options right now after the holidays but whatever they do have will hit that sweet spot. Homemade and made with love. Our server was so sweet. First off, people are so impatient. The majority of down votes seem to be from people that had to wait a while. Gross. Chill out. Covid happened ya'll. Everyone is still short staffed. This is similar to a Perkins or Denny's but with actual real food made from scratch. They roll the dough out by hand with a rolling pin! The Swedish meatballs aren't ready until 11:45 because they're still being made! The pork sandwich smothered in gravy with mashed potatoes was like a hug on the inside. The pie was utterly perfect. We drove 20 minutes two days in a row when we were staying in the area because the food was so good. Not fancy. Just good food! One note: they could really improve their gift shop. Super boring. It's bad. I would hate to be Norwegian and find out that there is a restaurant that misrepresents my culture's cuisine this way. I am not even going to go into the slow service because it isn't the one waitresses problem that the restaurant can't find enough staff. First off, 80% of the menu is basic American food - burgers, fries, eggs, bacon, etc. There is a clever embellishment of using lefse for sandwich wraps. It still doesn't count. Norwegian meatballs, lingonberries, and potato pancakes are basically it for the Scandinavian cuisine. My very generic sandwich and fries were pretty decent. It was expensive at $14 though and there was nothing Norwegian about it. My wife had the Norwegian meatballs "sandwich". It was 2 canned meat meat balls burnt to a crisp between basic stale white bread and smothered in brown gravy. No vegetables. No flavor. Meatballs were disgusting. Pretty sad that IKEA meatballs can out beat a literal Norwegian restaurant (like...you had one job). What would it take to make this restaurant really good? -Perfect the Norwegian food. Don't use cheap ingredients. -Add in more fish dishes since Norwegian cuisine has a ton of fish in it. -You really need more waitstaff. read more

I asked for a fresh salad next to it and it was just perfect and delicious . At the end asked for the blueberry crusted pie and it was the best pie I had ever have in a my life . A once wonderful stop up north, a recent stop being the most disappointing. They are in decline, a common issue with lack of wait staff is handcuffing them apparently. When asked to be seated, we told them "no preference, either is good" - this was a mistake as we were put in a booth to be seated behind two groups placed at tables? The food was just okay, though. It didn't amaze me like it has in the past. I had the potato pancake plate. It was enough food that I didn't have room for pie. This review is just based on the pie and coffee ... which is really all you need, right? On our way to Hayward for vacation, we made a quick stop at the Norske Nook in Rice Lake because 1) we needed to pick up my boyfriend's brother whose bus from the Minneapolis airport dropped him off next to the Norske Nook, and 2) my boyfriend, who drove the whole way, needed an after-lunch caffeinated pick-me-up. I had been to the Norske Nook in Hayward before, and really, how can you say no to a chain with something like 50 pies that are made from scratch on their menu?!? So we took a break from traveling, and the hostess immediately got us a table. We decided to each get a piece of pie and share them, so among the group, we got pieces of cranberry apple pie, raspberry peach melba pie and pecan stout pie. Each was different and delicious. We had to get a cranberry pie since it is Wisconsin, and this pie was tart yet sweet. Not sure what melba is, but this one didn't disappoint either. And pecan stout was just like a pecan pie but a little richer. Our waitress kept the coffee coming, and we were soon on our way, happily caffeinated and fueled by sweet sugary goodness. When you need a last bit of energy to get you to your destination, is there really a better place to go than a restaurant that specializes in desserts and coffee? I think not. read more

Ordered one of the specialtys. Turkey between 2 pieces of bread, mashed potatoes and homemade gravy. What I can say about this is that it's everything it says it is and also exists on our three dimensional plane. Service is not fast but there is a Norwegian and American flag at each table so I was able to stay entertained while looking at that. Pies are very good. We stopped in for lunch on our summer road trip. We were drawn to the home cooking and pies. We began our meal with the cheese curds, which were new to our Southern palates. They were good and surprisingly not heavy. My lovely wife ordered the lunch special, Norwegian meatballs and dressing. She really liked both. The meatballs were made of finely ground beef. Very tasty. I had the smelt lafse, mainly because I'd never heard of lafse or eaten smelt. For a fish that I normally consider bait, it was really good. The lafse was a treat. Glad I tried both. Our kids ordered pies for dessert. One double crust apple and one cookies and cream. The double crust apple was filled with fresh apples and well spiced. The crust was tender and flakey. The cookies and cream pie piece was HUGE with large pieces of cookies that were crunchy suspended in a fluffy cream filling. When combined with the cookie crust, it created an excellent pie. The service was great. Good, home made food. Definitely a winner. read more

Went to the Hayward Location drove 20min out of our way because reviews on pie were really supportive. We got there and there was line at the counter for people waiting to order bakery goods. One person in line said this is the bakery line and that is the food line. So we got in the bakery line. We watch servers, walk back-and-forth in front of us over and over, and nobody stopped to help. They all just ignored us. After a half an hour of waiting and a growing line someone finally walked up and said, does anyone need a table? He said I can put you on the waiting list. He said I'm from the kitchen and stopped cooking to come out to help you guys as if he was doing us a favor and seemed very put out that he had to come out to help. There were many open tables. Those people were seated 15 minutes later. 10 minutes later a man from the kitchen said, he could take pie orders now and started taking bakery orders. It took us close to 60 minutes just to order three slices of pie and a loaf of bread. There were only ten people waiting to order bakery items. A man who just finished eating waited over a half an hour to pay his bill at the same counter where we were all waiting to buy bakery items. When we got home and tasted some of the bread, each of us picked rockhard pieces of uncooked wild rice out of our bread, I put all of mine aside and counted 20 pieces just in one slice that were uncooked and rock hard. The bread was about $13 we had much higher expectations. I tried to call the restaurant that is open and no one answers the phone ...I called the Pie reservation number too no answer. So here is your feedback for all to read....if you have all day to waste stop here they will be more than happy to take up your whole day and ignore you if you just want pie. read more

What can I say about the pie that hasn't already been said? It's delicious, the list is extensive, and it's delicious. Did I say delicious? I meant delicious. Maudlin personal note, my dad drives up from Ohio to visit me in Minnesota. He always stops at Norske Nook and brings a white chocolate raspberry pie, because it's amazing and I always ask for it. He recently had some major, major health issues, and is finally back home after being hospitalized for 3 months. We drove down to visit, and I discovered his favorite pie is actually Dutch Apple. I stopped in and ended up bringing him one, and I am pretty sure I haven't seen him smile that big ever in my life. It is also pretty much gone, and he's had it for all of 3 days. The service was so bad I couldn't stay to eat. I understand waiting to be seated especially if a place is busy. This wasn't the case... three other couples were also standing in line to be seated and for over 15 minutes no one was greeted. The waitress with the red hair and face piercing made eye contact with everyone at the front multiple times as well as walk right by. A simple "I will be right with everyone" would have sufficed. I once worked with a woman who had a book titled: Calories Don't Count... It has a nice list of those rationalizations we might use when we over eat. Well here's mine: my entree was the Norwegian Salmon Lefse wrap. I'd give that 4 stars. My wife's Hearty Spinach (with chicken, walnuts, apples, bacon and Parmesan) salad was excellent. One review commented that the everyone in Rice Lake is overweight/obese. The woman who served us, Robin, was not. More importantly she was a nice, kind person who was understanding and patient with the small children in the booth next to us. Servers have a hell of a hard job. Well I will get off my soap box now. The place is very clean and well lit. Our total bill: $32. A comment about lefse: by itself it is bland and a bit dry. But like a flour tortilla it's what is put on it or in it that makes the difference. My favorite is to serve it warm with butter and lingonberry jam (available there and at Ikea): awesome! Once upon a time, I didn't love pie. But then I had pie at Norske Nook, and my whole life changed. While I don't really spend time in Rice Lake, it's on my way from visiting family in Duluth, MN. There's never a time I don't stop for pie here. My last trip included the Ultimate Potato Pancakes (whyyy can I not order this in Chicago?!) for breakfast and the sour cream blackberry pancakes for, uh, breakfast dessert. DELICIOUS. My parents went here for breakfast last weekend. It was not busy at all. Horrible service. The only thing warmer than the food was my moms glass of milk and their glasses of water. After an hour long wait, they finally got their food. Ice cold. Smallest portion of hash browns I've ever seen. On top of it the pancake wasn't even cooked. 1 piece of sausage for a $10.00 plate of ice cold eggs and gross hash browns. On top of it, once the waitress FINALLY came back she was rude. The cashier didn't seem to care about how terrible the food and service was and didn't even offer to take money off the price. (Which it honestly should have been free!) My poor father spent the rest of the day in the bathroom with food poisoning. We will not return. Truly appalling. read more

I think 3 stars is generous for our experience. Late lunch empty restaurant. Had to wait to be seated by the only server. Ordered a grilled sliced steak sandwich. The steak was cubed not sliced and fell out as I picked up the sandwich. Flavor was good portions were small I just wasn't wowed by my experience! My eggs were scrambled so it was hard to tell, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't more than one egg. Instead of getting a whole piece of lefse, I got 1/4 of a piece of lefse. The pie, however, is always outstanding! They always have many different flavors and it's a large piece. The service was fine. The restrooms were clean. The restaurant was clean.
