This place is amazing! Just like other reviewers say, it doesn't look great when you walk in, but boy, do they know their business. They also had everything I needed in stock, which was fascinating because the place is pretty small. Vonte was wonderful. I walked in in a cloud of cluelessness and had lots of questions. He patiently listened to my tale of led lights and buzzing dimmers, and then we jumped right in. He didn't rush me. Also, a competitive place to go for any of your other electrical needs. The staff is also quite knowledgeable technically, and about what's available or what alternatives will work. As a retired electrician of 22 years, and someone who always has a project going on around the house, I also know that they are a supply house for many local contractors. I was nervous to try this place because my electrician warned me "they may snarl at you but just ignore it and ask for your light bulbs". I needed to replace a bulb that is not easily available at other stores. I was pleasantly surprised that I was helped immediately and they were so friendly and NICE! My clients are not professional, they just ordered something that was totally not doable, with Pete's help, we figured out the best way to satisfy my client (by that I mean they SEE what they wanted regardless of how it is done inside the ceiling) while complying with the building codes. One star for willingness to to look at ballast customer brings in HOWEVER: this is a store where GLASS BULB PRODUCTS purchased will be removed from protective packaging and given to costumer in a BAG. It appears they test their inventory per sale because they purchase second quality ie, certain percentage of it is BROKEN and then seek out working unit from the batch at their counter. The owner is rude to those seeking a packaged item for the way home, which suggests to me he has forgotten that HOME DEPOT - where every lamp or bulb is blister packed and their selection is more comprehensive and easier to use - is just five minutes away. A VERY negative and rude disregard for customers' very basic expectations when purchasing such every day items as bulbs and lighting. In a slummy location without convenient parking, no less! At the VERY least, this business needs to learn to THANK every patron for even entering their neighborhood...before they start withholding PACKAGING. read more

True to the other Yelp's I read before going here (to find a transformer), there was a line and I had to wait 2 or 3 minutes. Well, the wait was really worth it! Not only did they answer all my questions and solved my transformer sourcing problem in a few minutes, but they also had a really good multi-use 110V smoke detector on their front counter that I needed (but couldn't find anywhere else). So, I bought two things I didn't expect to buy today, but needed badly. This place was a really good find for tough electrical components and for the answers to tough electrical questions! read more

We have a set of old hanging pendant lights that have hard-to-find replacement parts. Once in a while the lights or bulb sockets burn out, the cords overheat and fry some connecting gismo, the transformer dies, or something else goes wrong. Every time this happens I take my light into Northbay Lighting and have Kalani take a look. He always finds a solution within a very short time, and is happy to install the replacement parts (those cord kits are not easy to put together). The prices are very reasonable, the wait is short, and parking easy. And Kalani brings his laid-back Kaui attitude to the job, getting things done without stressing about it. I'll be back! Seriously the best one stop shop and must ask for Kalani!! Being a property manger for high end clients I have seen the dinasour light bulb up to the new and improved LED (which by the way manufacters change the style of lighting without our knowledge) and North Bay is my go to place! Kalani has guided me through all the challenges and given me sound advice to tweek things that work better for my clients. North Bay Lighting is a quirky little place that is easily accessed from central San Rafael and the guys working there have a ton of knowledge about all things electrical. If they don't have something, they can get it. True, their customer service lacks a soft serve coney feeling, but I have never left there without the part I needed or the information I needed to move on. read more

After reading the existing reviews I have to agree that "Mike" needs to work on his people skills. Maybe he was having a bad day but he was rude, unhelpful and patronizing (the worst). Then tried to throw out a semi-joke as if that would make up for the insults. To be fair, the others there I've dealt with were fine and they usually have what I need at reasonable prices. It's near Best Buy and Lamps Plus. Even though these two are both chains and the prices are higher, I may be taking my business to them in the future. I've bought lighting at North Bay Lighting before and have never had a problem. True, there is often a line and you may have to wait, but they've always been helpful. I was there yesterday and, though I told the young man behind the counter that I wouldn't be buying anything, he answered my questions about LED lights and wrote down a couple of web sites where I could find more information. I have used this business quite a few times over the years and have never had a problem. It doesn't seem to be set up for the prolonged interaction with indecisive buyers that some people seem to want. It helps to know what you are looking for when you go in there since they don't have a lot of staff. And, their prices are reasonable. I wouldn't have said "go to a dumpster" (although I may have felt like it), but if you want to price-shop, don't waste their time. read more
