Visited last Sunday to buy flap valves for the most standard Kohler toilets. Bought their higher end "universal" flaps, 2 of them for around $30. Each leaks 4 gal/minute. When I explained the issue over the phone to the associate, he asked his "boss". Came back with "all sales final". This is their policy on replacement of substandard goods. This is the problem with trying to support local businesses. Save the headache and just go to Amazon. When I said as much to the associate, they agreed with a "yeah, there you go". I intentionally called my local Ace to shop local and support them. I had questions about purchasing a barbecue before Christmas but for delivery after the holiday. The man who answered the phone was very polite and asked me to hold while he found someone who could answer my questions. I overhead heard him tell a colleague the nature of my question and "do you want to speak to her?" to which I heard "Not really." I hung up. Guess I won't be taking my business there. read more

But, the prices do seem a tad bit higher than the other places I am used to shopping (Jackson Hardware, Fairfax). What's with the big freezer of pies? I'm curious. My old rear yard garden hose was cracking and started to leak. I wanted to get a Craftsman 75' premium heavy duty rubber garden hose, which I had in front of the house and it has performed flawlessly. But with the demise of Sears, I had to do some researching to find out who sold it in the area. The only retailer that sold it was Ace Hardware, but the only stores that carried it were about 30 miles north or south of my house. With traffic in consideration, I decided to get it at Chase Ace. It's located on the edge of Downtown San Rafael. Driving up to it, this was one of the largest Ace Hardware's that I've been to and it has its own parking lot for about 15 cars. Seeing the garden supplies out front, I went into the building looking for my hose. I asked the worker at the door about garden hoses and she said it was located at the building at the opposite end. I was able to check out all the nice plants they had outside leading to the other building. After I entered, I saw the hoses three aisles in. Brought it to the counter, paid and I was on my way. Very nice, clean and bright store. The shelves all appeared to be well stocked. Workers were friendly. Wished Chase Ace was closer to where I lived. read more

I asked for help regarding a simple project I was working on and was rudely told that my project was not only impossible but was not offered any advice solutions or helped to find what I was looking for. I was told that items I was looking for did not exist, even though I knew they did. I left feeling very discouraged and belittled. I would recommend heading to Jackson's Hardware (about 5 minute drive away) where I was able to find exactly what I needed and was met with kindness and respect. read more

Our toilet at work was running endlessly and we determined the problem was the fill valve. I didn't want to drive all the way to the big hardware store that we all love to hate so I decided to try this Ace store instead. Upon arriving, there were three employees standing in the doorway talking. I would have appreciated it if one of them would have taken a moment to direct me to the right place and perhaps explain the different toilet fill valves, and that's why Ace gets four stars. Five stars would have been greeting me and explaining the different ones. Anyway, the store isn't very big and their signage was clear, so I was able to find what I was looking for by myself no problem. I'm glad I went here to save time and gas vs driving to Home Depot so the fact that the same valve is $10 at Home Depot and I paid $14 at Ace doesn't bother me at all... After all, it's good to support local businesses. I just wish I hadn't got the same level of service as if I'd gone to Home Depot. read more

Both Chase Ace locations are the best. I'm a contractor, and just a DIY guy some days. I prefer to shop local when I can instead of the big hardware stores. Been a customer of Chase Ace in particular for 20 years now and they continue to earn my loyalty every trip in. Just got a blackstone grill and they assembled it for me so we could take it camping. I didn't have time to assemble it myself. They didn't have to do that. Just another example of why I choose to spend money here and not other places. Price gougers! We bought Christmas lights there...which seemed shockingly expensive, at $18 per set. I needed nine sets and gulped and paid because I assumed the LEDs were just expensive. But then I discover the exact same lights are 1/3 (!) the price at another Ace hardware store. I went there because I thought they would have a better selection. But I can assure you that we won't be going back to Chase Ace ever again, for any reason. And we'll be telling everyone we know to avoid them. Stay away if you value your wallet. read more

I was in charge of fixing my friend's toilet and she had purchased the wrong kind. I go there often to buy garden plants and supplies, also to find special gifts in the lovely gift shop, but had never asked for product help. Since the fountain was not purchased there, I didn't know if they would help put it together. But Rich and Mac spent a lot of time figuring it out and making it useable. As a first time homeowner, I have A LOT of questions. The staff at this Ace in particular are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. They are truly a team and will often recruit a co-worker to combine their knowledge and come up with the best solution. Sometimes the prices are a little high but it is worth the cost due to the expertise and advice you receive. I go to this Ace at least twice a month and always feel supported. I am especially grateful for Marcello in the nursery. He has taught me so much about gardening and plant care. Marcello is incredibly honest, has helped me to select the best plants for my specific yard, when I have had problems and show him pictures he has helped to remedy them (and the remedies have worked!) He even taught me how to properly cut certain plants I now have in my yard. He has a deep knowledge of the products and plants, is never pushy on buying the most expensive items and instead helps to create a multi-step remedy when needed. Many moons ago I used to work in a retail nursery. I was always perplexed when my fellow employees would hide & avoid customers back in the grasses or shrubs. I don't know if you have this issue when you go to plant nurseries, but when I want assistance, I feel like I have to wander back into the Seregeti just to ask some questions! I have this issue at Sloat, West End, Armstrong and of course forget about any service at Home Sleepot! This is why I was super thrilled about my experience at this new hardware & garden center! Stopped in a week ago and I was immediately greeted by several employees who were genuinely interested in helping me. What a concept! One person took me on a tour of their various pots, another showed me tomatoes and when I was trying to plot out which perennials I wanted, another employee came up and made some useful suggestions. Here's the kicker...when I was done shopping, two people helped me out to my car..what?? no way...WAY! Granted, I didn't spend any time in their hardware store, but the garden center is lovely. Their plants rival Sloat's and are half the price. They had a great selection of soils and potting mixes and if you're looking for a gift, they have an unbelievable selection of garden ornaments, chimes, and trinkets. Chase hardware is everything you'd want in a hardware store, and then some. I've been meaning to write this review since last summer, hope it's better late than never! I've been super impressed with the customer service at Chase Hardware on 4th street. When I called them the first time, I spoke with Mary Ellen who told me about her own experience with the issue I was having and provided great recommendations. And it's covid time, curbside? No problem! A few weeks later I called them again, this time in need of a respirator for intensive household cleaning involving diatomaceous earth. I had looked on the Ace website but wasn't sure which respirator to get. Imagine my surprise when their already excellent customer service went stratospheric... I called to get some help figuring out the right respirator and spoke with Frederick, who went to great lengths to help me. He went online to determine the particulate size of the DE, and then figured out the best respirator for me to get. He spent a really long time on the phone with me - it felt like he treated me like family. What a gem!!! It was really extraordinary customer service. Many, so many thanks!!! read more

I was in San Rafael and I pulled in to the parking lot to check a text message. Then I decided to go in and see their succulent collection. OMG......fabulous. Such a great variety and many well established plants that you can tell have been around awhile. After checking it all out I decided on an amazing 'rats tail' in a 6" pot. I LOVE IT! I found the staff to be vary knowledgeable and helpful. The garden area was very clean and you can tell the plants are all very well taken care of. I'll be be back in the San Rafael area this weekend and have it on my list to stop in there and get another plant or two. That would be a succulent or a cactus type plant. I purchased an item to repair a sink and at checkout, I verified with the checker that the item could be returned. "Yes", he said noting that on my receipt. He reminded me that I had until Friday to return if it was necessary. Next day I show up with unopened item to return and also to purchase a significantly more elaborate item that will solve my problem. This time Ben checks me out. Ben tells me that there are no returns and that any dispute was between me and the person who told me it was fine the prior day. Now Ben,, do you really want to shirk your duties so blatantly, making the customer responsible for the validity of ACE policies?? Not so fast - Ben, and who are you anyway? Ben puffs up and tells me that since he's the store manager, he's right. According to Ben the customer ought not believe what an employee says but that the store will not back up commitments made by another employee of ACE. Bottom line-to save face Ben needed this mistake to be mine for not being suspect of his worker's promise, in writing. Ben , being quite burnt at this point, was getting ruder and more steamed by the second. I asked for his last name. He refused. Asked for his bosses name, he claims that it's kept secret. Ben had a bad day. Ben may be in the wrong job unless he can handle situations as minor as this with more decorum and professionalism. I feel for the people who report to him. Pretty toxic. In conversation with a few local handimen and a contractor, they had all had run ins with 'some little know it all' over at ACE, 4th St. named Ben. Ben has a reputation to live down.. read more

Loving this new ACE Hardware for great service, amazing selection and solid prices. You're likely going to find better prices at Home Depot, and you'll also find no one that works there or knows what they're talking about! Not true at Chase. The guys and gals here know their stuff and they're always around. Paint wise I end up going to Home Depot because Behr is some of the best paint on the market and I can't recall what Ace carries. They may carry Benjamin Moore, which is actually quite good. Anyway, ACE has Craftsman though which I love, American Made solid tools. Chase Ace also has an epic garden and nursery area and the gift emporium is surprisingly very solid. Lots of interesting finds in there, and it's not cheap crap either. Of course there is some cheap stuff, but overall good stuff. The garden people are friendly as well, we picked up a lemon tree, some succulents and high sun flowers there and even my brown thumbs haven't killed them yet. Anyway, this was really close when we lived in San Anselmo, but we bought a house over on the east side of San Rafael near China Camp, Home Depot is pretty close...yet I still find myself coming back here. Oh and I got Ace Rewards, free to sign up and you can just use your phone number, I've gotten cash back and lots of solid deals off that as well. read more

I have been to Chase Ace Hardware Garden & Gift Emporium twice now. I really, really like to garden and want to be told what I am buying and if there are any conditions that I should keep my eye on before and after I plant something. The staff here has been very helpful and informative. I bought veggies for my garden the first visit and got high quality, healthy plants. Probably cost a little more than Depot, but what the heck. My advice is to buy your plants here and go to Home Depot for 8 packs of border flowers and your soil as they always have a sale on something. Came yesterday with my wife and had to tear her away as there are lots and lots of gifts and gibbles one can buy. There is a hardware store at the other end that has lots of stuff so no need to drive all the way to get lost in the Depot on a Saturday now. read more

What has me most frustrated today is the cowardly policy of no longer letting customers use the restroom. If restaurants can allow patrons to use their restroom, why can't a hardware store.
