The North Coast Co-op in Eureka is very, very cool! . Located just a few blocks from Old Town at 25 4th St. The parking lot is great, always plenty of spots, big and easy to navigate. The produce section is my ultimate fave...so many fresh fruits and veggies! Apples, pears, lemons, pumpkins, grapes, plus a huge variety of tomatoes and mushrooms (king, oyster, wood ear, shiitake, etc.). And the salad greens? Fresh kale, lettuce, lemongrass, mint, basil, yummy! I also love their bulk section, tons of grains, rice, quinoa... you name it. And their alternative milks, so many options! Honestly, this place feels like a mashup of Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, but with that local, eco-friendly heart. The store is clean and well-maintained, staff are super friendly, and there's always fun little things to discover--local soaps, chocolates, jams, honey, wine, and seasonal displays. Plus, the sushi bar upfront is delicious. They also sell cute plants, candles, totes, which makes the store feel extra fun. Yes, it's a little pricier than other supermarkets, but for freshness, variety, quality, and that special eco-friendly, local vibe, it's totally worth it. This is my go-to store. We stayed at the Inn within a short walking distance to this NC Co-Op & walked over looking for food on Sunday. The store is clean and well-maintained. It has a similar feel to Eureka Natural Foods on Broadway except the prices are higher on some items, but the hot deli and salad bar here are just as beautiful and stocked with nutritious selections. The GF thought the sushi bar upfront is a nice touch. The chefs were preparing fresh batches of Sushi on the spot while we were there. The produce section was impressive - loads of fresh fruits, veggies - Apples, pears, lemons, pumpkins, grapes, plus a huge variety of tomatoes and mushrooms (king, oyster, wood ear, shiitake, etc.). Wood Ear mushroom? In Eureka? I couldn't even find that in some Asian grocery stores in silicon valley. read more

This is in regard to the Eureka Coop produce department Customer Service Only, not the Arcata Coop. This is not about the quality and variety of healthy food, as it is exceptional in that way. For many years, I have done my major health food store shopping at Wildberries in Arcata on Wednesdays when we fill our bottle containers at New World Water on 11th Street, then go to Wildberries. Recently, I needed some vegetables and thought I would try Eureka Coop as I was over that way. Veggies look great, and I found what I wanted. I only buy baby carrots in a bunch and young beets in a bunch. In every other store, the person in the organic vegetable department will get their knife and cut off the ends for me, and make sure they go with green waste or to feed animals, since I am unable to eat them, nor do I have green waste available where I live, and due to arthritis it is hard to cut off myself. This time, that seemed to be a major problem with an employee to go get a knife and properly remove the ends to be put in food for animals or green waste your grocery store has. This employee ripped off the ends of the bunch of baby beets midway with her hands, leaving me to have to discard the other 4 inches her hands had touched, making them contaminated. Then, she walks over and shows me these huge beets that are single with no ends on them and says how people eat those ends, so now feeling bad felt I had to explain the many reasons I can't utilize the ends of beets. It was a passive aggressive move on her part, completely unnecessary, and it was off-putting to say the least. Was she trying to make made me feel bad? Why did she have to lecture me about how other people eat the ends? Why do I have to explain that I don't like beet ends, so they go in the garbage at home? Why did she have to question me as to why I don't want some huge old beet instead of the bunch of beautiful young beets? In answering all of her questions (see above), I forgot to mention I can't cut well with my arthritic hands, and I only like the taste of fresh young vegetables. Why do I have to explain myself at all? Aren't Eureka Coop produce people allowed to use knives (or go get a knife) to cut off ends for customers? Great natural foods grocery store. Got a breakfast burrito from the hot bar and some self serve coffee for $12.50, tasty egg, cheese and veggies burrito. The staff that we ran into was very nice and took the time to chat as if they weren't busy. The store was large enough to provide a great selection of anything you're looking for. Ive been coming here for a while now and have noticed some things in my time coming here. One thing I have noticed is the price for ONE 16oz cup of black coffee is up to $4.00 now. When I asked the cashier if the price had recently gone up his reply was, "yes the price has gone up and it going to continue to go up". And that was it..so I guess I will get coffee elsewhere now. I picked up a premade sandwich for lunch the other day and the bread was hard as a rock, no exaggeration. When I opened the wrapper I also noticed the lettuce was wilted and the tomatoes were soggy and old. Aside from all that, most of the cashiers seem very disgruntled and like they'd rather not be there which does not make a great experience for the shopper. All in all, the customer service here is poor and the products are subpar at best yet significantly over priced. I will start shopping elsewhere. read more

Grass fed beef/free range chicken selection that is very impressive. Hot/Cold deli whose repertoire is genius, tasty, a delight for the eyes. Freshest produce to rival a farmer's garden! Amazing staff, incredible cafe, deli, bulk and sustainable sushi!! We usually come here for our produce but once in awhile you will see good deals on healthy foods. I have been able to discover so many yummy options this way ;-) such as yummy gluten-free donut holes (my partner is gluten free) so it is a win-win situation ;-) Also this store has such a variety of items such as local handmade items from earrings to seasonal items like hats, gloves and scarfs. The rare items I have seen are quail eggs, an olive bar, Vegan options and rare season fruits which produce staff are more than willing to cut an item open and have you try it. Also, if you are a regular here you really familiarize your self with the friendly faces such as the cashiers and staff. Lastly I highly appreciate that they are asking customers to round up for local organizations or business. This program is called Seeds for Change. The organization changes every month. read more

I recommend the Arcata food coop, rather than the Eureka one. Were I to review the Arcata store, I would give it 5 stars. It is well run; they put products on sale which the Eureka store does not. The workers in Arcata are professional, friendly, supportive; it is a welcoming entity. I live in Eureka, and drive all the way to Arcata to shop for produce, if I do not get to a farmer's market. The produce in Eureka sometimes appears past the point at which it should have been given to a farmer or thrown out. Some of the workers in the Eureka store have very negative attitudes, and the vibe in that department sometimes feel bad. read more

I would love to give it more stars - the food selection is great, if a bit pricey. But I have to say: can management please get some serious help with customer service training? I've been coming in just about twice a week for the last three months. There are several very friendly, personable folk working there (mostly women). But there are MORE than a few who seem too bothered to greet customers, or be friendly checking you through. More than once I've walked past people stocking who would look at me AND MEET MY EYES, and not say a word. Okay, if you are busy, be busy - but if you look at a customer, meet their gaze...for god's sake, greet them. This is the feeling of the place: kind of down and dark. Sad, because one of the best food selections in Eureka. But they need to bring in someone to train in professional and positive customer service - I've been to Arcata Coop four or five times, and it was definitely a bit better there. Had stopped by the Arcata store earlier in the day and saw all the amazing stuff they had there. Decided to stop by the Eureka one (which is near our hotel) for dinner. Walked in there at 4:30 on a Saturday, and it was dead. All the hot food was empty, the deli was completely closed. The sushi bar wasn't open. At 4:30!! So disappointing. read more

This is a next Level supermarket! I'm In love. I am currently visiting family for the holidays and I searched this place up on Yelp. I read the amazing reviews and I knew I had to visit this place for myself. From the moment I walked in to the moment I left the store, the experience was so refreshing! They have a large selection of organic vegetables, they're all fresh and well organized on the shelves. I really liked the variety of items this store has to offer. The staff is very friendly and attentive. I was able to find everything on my list and more! I even bought some black bean chili they cook there at the deli and it was delicious! This market is a cross between Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. Their prepackaged deli section is quite good. We had the curry chicken wrap, garlic lovers pasta and the turkey sandwich. The first two were excellent eventhough the pasta was mildly spicy which was unexpected. There were delicious cloves of garlic in it. The turkey sandwich was not great as the bread was hard due to being in the refrigerator. The wrap and sandwich were $8 each. The fresh cookies in their bakery were also wonderful. We had the chocolate chip and the oatmeal butterscotch cookies. There are only 2 locations: Eureka and Arcata and their deli selections appear to be slightly different. read more

Move over Wholefoods because I found me something I may just like more than you!? What I LOVE: - They provide local products. - The food is delicious near the cafe area. Try the Espresso Pulled Pork Mac and Cheese. It is creamy and it just bursts with yummy flavors. I love how the pulled pork is fork friendly! Call first to see if they have it before you come. - The pizza they make is AMAZING! They use fresh ingredients and you know it's fresh because the pizza is refrigerated and it expires within days. Also, the pizza is on sourdough and I don't know if I've ever had sourdough pizza, but it is magic! - I am a super fan of their oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Plus, I love how the ingredients are straight up! - The maple scone is perfect! It's not too sweet. - Their breakfast vegan burritos are truly satisfying. Gosh, as I am writing this review I think I might just have to call their kitchen to see if they have the espresso pulled pork. Epic sandwiches from the deli. My company stopped here to pick up boxes lunches for our trip today. I blindly received a Turkey Tap sandwich and holy rusted metal Batman! Incredible. We ordered a few dozen sandwiches in a few different varieties and all 21 of us loved, even raved, about how awesome these sandwiches were...and huge, they were very generously portioned to the point where several people couldn't finish in one sitting. The other half of their sandwiches made for an excellent mid afternoon snack after wandering through the Redwoods. I'd definitely recommend North Coast if you need a dang good sandwich that will delight and more than satisfy you. read more

In addition to good quality produce and other groceries, they have some takeout foods (e.g. sushi and turkey meatloaf), and will make sandwiches to order (I ordered a very tasty ham and Swiss on rye, which contained a generous portion of both the ham and the Swiss, for about $10). read more

Next stop was the meat counter and the two gentlemen who helped me were so professional and courteous. Then the cashier (with the beautiful red hair) finished it off amazingly. Worst customer service ever. I have to use WIC program there and they are rude, condescending and bullies. Today, cashier Adam had about 5 employees swarm me because my mask was showing my nose , and I'm pregnant and said I'm nauseous. I had to grab my mermaid roll from the sushi counter and the employees continued to harass me about my mask showing my nose and I explained I needed to Breathe and was leaving. It was crazy how rude and obsessed the employees are about my nose showing!! Will never return there. read more

Check your groceries, ask the checker if they have given you all your groceries. Watch produce, yes a lot. They held back my loaf of bread for some reason, then charged me for the wrong produce, zucchini or cucumber, seemed obvious to me, not the checker. Overcharged, lots of mistakes. Efficiency makes a huge difference. If you don't notice, you lose. Oh, just drive back here and get your groceries, and refund of overcharge. It's easy for you to say, no service today. read more

I was about to check out when an employee asked me to wear another mask cause my mask was too thin. When I agreed to wear the mask , he insisted he had to supervise me through the register because the situation wasn't resolved. As if I was a threat. The staff member was standing 4ft away from me, I asked him to step away from me and he refused. He said I had to be supervised. I was agreeable in wearing the mask and feel violated and offended. Three stars for the outrageous mask policing. These people are mask nazis and told me that my two year old child had to wear a mask in their store when the freakin CDC doesn't even recommend masks on children younger than 5 years old. It's extremely difficult to get a two year old to keep a mask on that they can't breathe in well and in my opinion inhumane and abusive to force a child to wear something they do not want to. Nowhere else in town ever tells me to force a mask on my child but the co op. I prefer Eureka Natural for this reason alone even though they are like 5x the price. read more

The checker named Elizabeth treats disabled customers like shit. Be wary of her. Also, about 50 percent of the time the deli will completely screw up a sandwich order. One sandwich maker can't tell the difference between Smoked Gouda and Muenster. Prices are super high. I assume this is because the co-op is in deep financial troubles. There's an ALL day waffle bar in the hot food section on Sundays! There's even strawberries and whipped cream available! They use quality organic ingredients and it's much more affordable than a regular restaurant! Win win. I'm using my own container and utensils, just make sure you get the tare weight of the empty container before you fill it with goodies. This is going to become a Sunday routine I think :) read more

Randy the "senior clerk" is one of the rudest humans I've come across while shopping in a store. My husbands mask was slightly below his nose & he stormed over to us & with intense aggression said "YOU NEED TO HAVE A MASK THAT GOES OVER YOUR NOSE IN ORDER TO SHOP HERE." Mind you, we understand that considering we drop about $1,000 a month at this co-op (we will not be returning & we will definitely not be renewing our membership). After my husband fixed his mask, I simply asked him "human to human, soul to soul, what makes you think it's okay to ask us so rudely right from the start" he then kicked us out of the store LOL. He was shaking, his ego was clearly offended, & his new found power is getting to his head. As a business owner myself, I would NEVER have an employee like Randy! read more

This was exactly what I thought it'd be. It was expensive, but well worth it for the kinda things they were selling. You can always tell when a place will be expensive when the shelves are black, I think. That seems to be a marker these days. :P Organic, natural, non-GMO (not that I care), and other "hippie" monikers are thrown about the store on various products. A good bit of local produce was being sold here when we went (though it's cheaper down the road at the Arcata Farmer's Market - so Saturday isn't the day to shop here).
