My Dad drives by this restaurant every week traveling from Northport to TC and he was eager to try this. We were along for the ride! I checked yelp and saw mixed reviews- I totally get it now. We sat on the back patio which was quiet and shady. The outdoor bar looked like a great spot to have a beer outside in the shade and my Dad said he probably will stop there again to do that in the fall. The food was incredibly hit or miss. Cherry burger: my husband said "as long as it isn't a burger with three sad cherries on it I bet it will be great". It was a burger with three sad cherries on it! He appreciated that they cooked it properly but was underwhelmed and agreed it was not what he expects from a $22 burger- even in a tourist town. Jambalaya: My Dad loved this even though he said it was too much rice. There were 3 large shrimp and some sausage in it as well. He is truly picky and would order again. Kids noodles: bow ties, good portion. My son loved them. Kids chicken: unusually heavy breading which was borderline burned in the frier on top of tough chicken. I had to peel the breading off for him to eat any of it. Walleye and Morels: the walleye was GREAT. Lightly breaded, moist and flakey. The morel sauce was a miss. Not much flavor and the morels- though quite a few- just weren't that good. Not the best $35 meal I have had by a long shot. The wild grains were all sage and the veggies were extra oily- seems like a seasoning issue more than anything on that plate. Overall I would go back and might even order the walleye again with the sauce on the side and see if I can sub the sides. Simply said, do not go to this establishment. This is a long read but based off the owner's unprofessional, inaccurate and quite frankly, rude reply to a member of our group who gave a, short and sweet, negative review (on Yelp), it feels necessary to catalog the details. We had a Friday evening reservation and a party of 9. We were seated outside on the patio along the back/side fence area. Our server, Sean (who was lovely and doing his best despite his leadership), greeted us, gave menus and went to get us a round of waters. While waiting and looking through the drink menu, two of us immediately smelled hot garbage. It came in waves so we dealt with it for awhile. The table next to us, who were in the process of cashing out, asked if we could smell it and when we replied yes, were told they had been informed it was a dead animal. We tried to ignore the smell since no one else in our group seemed bothered... Meanwhile, one of our group went in to ask if the bartender could make Espresso Martini's and was told yes. We proceed order 7 martinis, 1 Coke and 3 orders of Fries. All of that came out rather quickly. The Espresso Martinis however, were terrible. They tasted like watered-down coffee mixed with vodka. Not everyone can make an Espresso Martini, let alone a good one, which is why we went to ask (reminder: it's ok to say no if you can't do it). Only 3 out of 7 of even drank them and when we commented about how they tasted, our server apologized and asked if we wanted something else, but in the end we were still charged for all of them. Next, we each order our food, while we wait for the food, the smell is progressively getting worse and now everyone at the table, as well as the table seated adjacent to us, are plugging our noses. They ask to be moved and are, we ask next and are told they have to check. (It's worth noting here that we were NEVER offered to move, we asked to be moved - twice.) The other table (a 6 top) that was seated after us, suddenly gets their food. We ask the chef where our food is, as at this point we're well over an hour into this experience, and he says we have a larger group (yes, 9 is more than 6, but not by a landslide) so it's coming. Ok, odd, but sure thing. Our food starts coming and I personally ask whether we can be moved because the smell is overwhelming at this point. Sean, again, says he has to check. At that point everyone had enough and we told them to bring the remainder of food, the bill and to-go boxes. We settled our bill and left immediately. While I can acknowledge it's really no "fault" of anyone's that an overflowing dumpster just behind the patio wall emits a terrible smell, when several tables have complained and are visibly bothered by it, perhaps lying about it being a dead animal and/or continuing to seat people there is not the best idea. With all that said, our food was fine. Nothing wonderful, nothing terrible. It was cold by the time we ate it because we had to take it home to eat it. Even if the food was the best in the world, the experience would have tarnished it regardless. One of the unfortunate parts about all of this was that I was very excited to try this place after hearing great things over the years. Immediately prior to going, I heard from some locals that it had changed ownership/management and had gone downhill since then. With no prior experience, I would say I have to agree. Furthermore, I had started writing a short and sweet not-so-great review the night it happened but another member of our group posted our experience so I canceled it. Now that the owner had replied to that precious post in such a distasteful manner I've decided to write it again and also post it across all my review platforms since he's already accused us of doing so. I have posted our receipt for clarity on what we ordered and look forward to his comment here since he seems get sassy with everyone who leaves any sort of negative review. A word of advice, sir: perhaps your energy would be better spent offering even a half-assed apology about a bad experience and making any attempt at fixing the issues that are brought to your attention to make your customers actually want to come back instead of watching security cameras, checking time stamps and sitting behind an internet review board making snide comments to those customers making us never even consider returning. read more

We tried to stop into NCK&B on a Saturday for lunch while at Lake Leelanau, but unfortunately that didn't happen... When we arrived at 11:30, the door was locked. We checked the website, FB, and Yelp again to confirm we didn't miss something about business hours... The restaurant was supposed to be open at 11:00, which it was not. As we turned around to leave a staff member unlocked the door and said they were running late and that they anticipated opening around 12:00 (Note: He was nice and apologetic about the situation). Not really sure what was going on at the restaurant, but not opening on time without customer notice (of some kind) is inexcusable... I understand unforeseen circumstances can happen, but the restaurant at a bare minimum should have put a sign on the door, updated FB, etc. We ended up not waiting the extra time and went to Village Inn instead... Very disappointed in NCK&B, as it was recommended to us and we were really looking forward to dining there - Unfortunately, we will not make a point to go back to try. read more

While the hostess was very kind and obliging and took our reservation, we waited over an hour for our food, which wasn't outstanding by any means. My fried green tomatoes were cold and had random cooked corn on the top, which was an odd garnish in my opinion. The veggie burger was pretty good but not outstanding for the price. The ambience of the place was great and it had a nice wooden bar. The service seems stretched thin and a little disjointed/inexperienced. I can see a place like this being really good if they made some changes or perhaps they did do things differently before, but as it stands now, this is not a place I would take my family back to. read more

This place used to be amazing. Since she sold the place, it's a disaster. We were there early and the place was half full outside. So, it was slow. It took us about 45 minutes to get our food. The perch was $35. Only three pieces of perch. The white fish was just a simple fried piece of white fish. No sauce nothing special. Also $35. For a premium price point, this place was super disappointing. The service was fair to partly cloudy. The prime rib is amazing with a side baked potato & coleslaw. Worth the scenic drive up the peninsula if coming from Traverse City. Parking available on the side streets. Cozy, casual atmosphere, full bar, friendly staff! Outdoor seating available. I love their "It's Fine" slogan: so midwestern, understated when the food hits the spot! Would have enjoyed a booth as we were right by the door and the bar and all the door traffic. On to the grub: The onion rings were good--big and light and crispy. The brown drizzle is not appealing nor flavorful. The whitefish bruschetta was overproduced. The whitefish should be the star, and it was a scant finger of filling -- which had a good flavor -- down four oblong very crunchy toasts with some shards of radish as garnish and some truly flavorless "pesto". There's no excuse not to be having fresh basil to work with at this time of year. Niece liked the tuna, partner liked the beef sandwich. My small salad needed a plate - the oval ramekin makes it look quite scant. Chicken on top was very dry. $170 out the door (incl tip) for 2 apps, 2 beers, 3 entrees and a soda. read more

Oof! I like Jambalaya. I cook Jambalaya at home (yes, following the Paul Prudhomme recipe). You start out by making a roux, followed by the "holy trinity" of green bell pepper, onions, and celery. Done well, it's a delicious dish - and one of my favorites. So when I saw it on the menu here, I figured I'd skip the more prosaic typical bar food selections and try the Jambalaya. Yikes, I should have had a burger! This was nothing like any Jamabalaya I've ever had: no evidence at all of any vegetables, despite the menu listing "trinity" among the ingredients. No evidence of any sort of broth that the rice and proteins typically cook in. Basically, it was a large heap of overly seasoned rice with sausage, chicken, and a grand total of 3 shrimp. It wasn't inedible, but I'd never order THAT again if I ever do go back to North Country. Others in our party were also less than thrilled. My wife liked the fries that accompanied her flank steak, but thought the steak itself was sub-par. I hadn't been here since the place changed hands. It wasn't a gourmet dining experience before, but it was good, solid, unpretentious northern Michigan bar food. It may have slipped a notch since then. read more

North Country grill "saved the day" for our parry of 9 who were celebrating a 50th wedding anniversary. We had confirmed reservations at Corky's (Vineyard inn) which were made 2 weeks prior. When we arrived at Corky's we found the restaurant closed! We went to NCG and they accommodated us immediately, even though they were extremely busy. We were all served our amazing meals in less than 15 minutes . The waiter and staff were so kind . TRULY a wonderful experience! We had great service by Becky, sat outdoors on their dog friendly patio, had lovely creative cocktails, and then a fantastic and creative lunch. It's definitely a cajun theme, and we loved it Prices were in line, or better, vs. other Northern Michigan eateries. Only slight miss was one of the larger pieces of chicken that was slightly under done. However, this was rectifier quickly once we notified our server. Nope nope nope. We came here last summer and had a great prime rib + walleye special. The place was packed within 20 minutes of the opening. It felt like a true "up north" experience. We came back today and: A) they no longer have the prime rib + walleye special B) they no longer have walleye at all C) the shrimp on the jambalaya was undercooked (and grey) D) the catfish on the po boy was very fishy E) the collard greens were sad F) they were out of fried green tomatoes and filet mignon On the plus side, the place was not busy, even as we were leaving at 6:15pm. Stopped in for a Sunday breakfast while vacationing in northern Michigan at this downtown Sutton's Bay eatery. There was comfortable seating inside and out on the patio. The ambiance was warm, with touches of humor incorporated in the decor (note the framed picture over the fireplace when you visit). We dined in the very relaxing atmosphere filled with quiet recorded jazz and happy patrons' conversations. The service was friendly and excellent. Our breakfasts were delicious! My partner's Eggs Benedict disappeared as did my Cherry Cream French Toast with fresh black and red raspberries crowning it off. We will DEFINITELY stop here again! Highly recommend it! We waited over an hour for food and were repeatedly told it was "coming" but when discussed with the chef he was incredibly dismissive. We were there a week ago. The food and service were excellent!!! I had the flank steak with the chimichurri...meat was tender with a lovely flavor. Seems I'm giving out 4 stars quite often here in Sutton's Bay but you gotta do what you gotta do! Stopped in here for a later dinner, 7pm, on Thursday night. Honestly the town is pretty quiet right now but hopefully as the summer comes around and restrictions are eased it will pick up. But for us it's been nice and quiet Sat in the outdoor dining area because it was a beautiful night. We had a short wait so we ordered a drink at the bar. I got the white wine sangria. It was light, refreshing and perfect for this evening. It was only a few minutes before our table was ready and they asked us to pay our bar tab before moving to the table, I thought they could have added it to our dinner tab since we ordered drinks at the table, but oh well. Once seated we ordered the lobster and crab cake appetizer. This was delicious and I could have had that for dinner (they do have a dinner option of this!). It came with a light cream sauce which was perfect with it. Kelsey, our server, was polite and eager to answer our questions. She didn't rush us to place our dinner choice and we appreciated that. When we were ready we placed our dinner order... Shrimp, fried with cocktail sauce and green beans and a cesar salad. We also ordered the appetizer of fried asparagus and glad we did! This also came with the same light cream sauce, yummy! The shrimp was fried to a delicious crunch and enough for us to share. For the drinks, appetizers and entree we got out of there for just over $75 (without tip of tax). Parking was pretty easy because like I said the town was fairly quiet. We didn't get dessert because they only had cherry pie and chocolate ganache and I wasn't in the mood for either. Next time we're in the area this will be someplace I'd definitely go again and you should check it out as well. read more
