At launch back in 2010, there were specified zones with varying fares, but now there's just a single ride ($3.50, no transfers, no roundtrip) or all day Commuter ($7, unlimited trips & transfers) option. The single ride can only be purchased in cash from the kiosk at the station AND you need exact fare or you will get your change in the form of a use-it-or-lose-it CapMetro voucher that expires in 15 days - boo! Most folks will prefer the ticketing experience using the CapMetro smartphone app (unless they have exact change and really only need a one-way trip for $3.50). I highly recommend installing the app and getting payment methods set-up in advance so that boarding, activating your ticket, and displaying it when asked will be a breeze. Paying at the kiosk can be a hassle and if the queue is long, you might miss your train and wait 30 minutes or more until the next one arrives. Students with a photo school ID or a CapMetro "Reduced Fare ID" can get half-priced tickets, but to access this benefit through the CapMetro app, you have to first visit their Transit Store in downtown Austin to set it up in person (call 512-389-7454 for instructions). Be sure to bring a birth certificate, passport, or other proof of age/eligibility for the rider. This also applies to seniors, people with disabilities, and active military out-of-uniform. If you are used to traveling via public transit in other major cities, you may find using CapMetro services to be, well, somewhat frustrating. The truth is that we haven't made the investments that we should have to keep up with the rapid growth of our city and you can see the evidence when you ride our trains & buses. For MetroRail passengers, this means that trains don't come very often, they don't stop at many places that you likely would want to go, and parking is often not available anywhere near the station where you are starting your trip. It is not spelled correctly. I know and all Hispanics that know Spanish, that it is a curse word. So she is going off in 1 to 3 seconds because someone simply ask her question. Starts cussing on the bus. She said the curse word 3 times. I said you don't have to curse. It also states on 3 different websites. That it is a Spanish slang curse word. So when she saw me wheeling into the office. The bus driver ran into to talk to the supervisor before I could. The bus driver only said to me in English all angrily I know. When I asked for someone to translate. The women knows English but refuses to speak to me in English. She only wanted to speak Spanish,mind you were still in America where the language is English. That is what we are taught in schools here. When I go into the building to talk to the supervisor. That bus driver sees me and runs in there to talk to the supervisor first before I can. The supervisor a white woman with Grey or blond hair. I was trying to explain to her what happened. She would not listen. She was cutting me off when I tried to tell her. I told her in Spanish because I learned Spanish listening to my friends in school and I picked it up. Tex Mex. Then the Supervisor got all angry at a woman in a wheelchair, me, when I spoke to her in Spanish. Told me I was being rude. So I filed a complaint and a man whose Indian called me and said he knows French, Spanish and English and that is not a curse word. Every Texas Hispanic who knows Spanish has told me yes, that is a curse word. I told the supervisor quit being mean to ya'll's' customers. Was able to wheelchair my self back home in a manual wheelchair. It took 2 hours. The Indian supervisor was very happy to believe the lies of that bus driver. Continue to treat handicapped people as if there are no laws protecting them from being discriminated on here in the U.S.. I think the bus driver figured it out. The more ugly she is to the passengers. The less people she has to ride on her bus, and Carts still has to pay her, her check. This Indian man was like she is staying on your route. I said I don't have the privilege of walking. She went off in 3 seconds. I have no way to defend myself. For my safety I will never ride Carts buses again. The Indian supervisor was like okay. Carts in San Marcos should be happy to know a handicapped women who can't walk has to manually wheel herself around in a wheelchair all over San Marcos. There was a young couple waiting in the Greyhound area. They told me I was not being rude to that supervisor. I have talked to other people they have told me that particular bus driver is very rude. Other passengers that told me she is very blunt. Then why on God's green earth is she working around people. Especially those who are handicapped and disabled for life. The main man a Indian supervisor has obviously no understanding of laws in the U.S. protecting the disabled and handicapped. The interior of the train was impressively clean--seriously, spotless--and well-ventilated, making the ride comfortable from start to finish. The conductors were friendly and accommodating, adding to the overall positive experience. The children particularly enjoyed the ride, making it a memorable family outing. Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority or MSB is an evil scamming private corporation, taking advantage of Texans who can no longer afford to live in Austin, none the less drive its roads. If I can't get a bill how the hell am I supposed to pay it? You received my bills back, you knew I was not getting them. How do you have the right to charge me over 1000% per bill? Why did we let this happen Austin? It's our damn fault for not kicking them out in 2008.

I got to try out their smartcar and Mercedes GLA. I had trouble figuring out how to start the ignition on the smartcar, so I contacted their support line and was able to get help from a customer representative immediately. The daily rental can get a little expensive. The daily rental for the smartcar cost $69. I believe it's advertised as $59 on the Austin car2go site, but that price doesn't include taxes and fees. The daily rental for the GLA came out to $92. It's advertised as $79 on the site. Over all, car2go made my trip to Austin more enjoyable. I was able to drive out of the city to hike and zipline. However, I'm docking a star off because of their lack of transparency about prices.

If you're visiting and will be using the train for 4 or more days, your best option is the 7-day pass at $27.50. If you are a student, a senior citizen, or one of a few other special groups, you can get 1/2 priced passes, but you need to show proof of eligibility when tickets are validated or checked by fare enforcement. Don't try to cheat, or you'll get a $75 ticket! Members of the homeless encampment just down the street at the Mopac overpass do sometimes make their way over to the station, but we've never encountered any trouble from fellow humans at this station or on the train over the years. Morning & evening commuter rides are pretty quiet and comfortable, although you may need to stand during the most popular morning southbound and evening northbound trips. Back at the launch in 2010, the last northbound MetroRail trip of the day was around 6:30p, a bummer if you had ideas of heading downtown for an evening of merriment with no need to drive or park. That's still true most of the week (it's still a commuter rail service & it still shares the tracks with freight trains overnight) but on Fridays & Saturdays, we now have extended service until after midnight, with the last train from the Convention Center departing northbound at 1:45am on Friday night and 2:30am on Saturday night. They also extend the service hours during special events like SXSW and ACL Fest, but beware that those trains get packed! Another big change since the beginning is that the station's ticket kiosks no longer take credit cards AND they do not give back change. Instead, you get a paper voucher that must be used toward additional CapMetro services within 15 days or the value disappears! For this reason alone, it's generally to your advantage to put the CapMetro app on your smartphone and make your ticket purchases & activations there. You also get timely service alerts on the app when there are unexpected delays or other emerging issues with the train service. Tip: Follow on Twitter @CapMetroATX for up-to-the-minute news on changes to the service schedule & special discounts from partner businesses.
