We stopped into north light for some pre-dinner cocktails and it was great! They had a fun range of unique drinks that were both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. They have an adorable outdoor patio and a shot gun style bar inside. Our server was friendly and helpful! Although we didn't get any food, it smelled and looked amazing. We will definitely be back in the future.

Fantastic drinks and one of our local faves. Every cocktail I've had here has been balanced, interesting, and delicious. Even the sweeter "fru fru" cocktails come off thoughtful, layered, and complex. ---- Food ---- Didn't try the food -- this review is all drinks. ---- Drinks ---- The best part about their drinks is that every one seems to be created with intentionality. Every drink we had seemed balanced and thoughtfully crafted. Standouts: Channel Orange: Smooth and delightful. Tastes like a complex, elevated orange creamsicle. Mr. Toad's Wild Ride: Delicious aloe cocktail. It was crisp and refreshing with pleasant notes of aloe, bell pepper, and aloe. Grapefruit Old Fashioned: I'm an old-fashioned fan and this was a pleasant twist on it. The grapefruit added a different, pleasant nuance to it. Hot Toddy: We've found Hot Toddies generally hard to do well, but they got this one right. It was deep, spiced, and comforting -- not too heavy and not too light. They rotate the menu often. Every cocktail I've had has looked as good as it tasted, with balanced flavor, thoughtful flavor nuances, and tasteful presentation. No gimmicky drinks here. ---- Environment ---- Space is a bit tight. The indoor tables near the door can feel a little awkward, and the back patio depends on who you're seated next to. Last time, we were outside and had a very loud group next to us which affected our experience. Still, the vibe inside is warm, stylish, and not too loud. Fantastic location in the heart of Temescal. Right by Cholita Linda, Pizzaiolo, Burma Superstar -- some fantastic restaurants. It's easy and reliable to grab dinner nearby and stop here after for some tasty drinks and good vibes. ---- Service ---- Always warm and welcoming. Hosts and servers actually know the menu and give honest, helpful recs. ---- Cost ---- Drinks aren't cheap, but they're definitely worth it. You're paying for balance and craft. ---- Overall ---- This place hits the sweet spot of thoughtful cocktails and good energy. Tight seating is the only downside, but the drinks make up for it. You can count it as a pleasant experience every time.

No wait and was seated in the back which had a bunch of tables. Got the Hawaiian punch which is labor intensive and it was so smooth and strong. Highly recommend. The umami tots has the same type of takoyaki sauces with bonito flakes and furikake flakes. My friend liked her hot today. Ambiance was cozy in the front part of the restaurant and spacious in the back. Would come again.

Great service. Friendly staff. Cool cafe vibes. Food was good. Very solid smash burger. Me and my partner did the cheap date special which was two burgers two curley fries and two beers. Really great value.

North Light isn't just a bar; it's a spiritual enclave, a sangha with a bookshelf, and somehow also queer as hell in the best possible way. Noah made me a Trinidad Sour that was sharp, strange, and perfect. The burger is genuinely one of the best I've had, and Stevie with the tots sealed the deal. Cozy, smart, soulful, delicious--this place feels like Oakland taking good care of itself.

Went in on a random Tuesday night, service was quick and the vibe is cozy with a dimly lit restaurant bar and vinyls spinning. Came in for the cheap date which includes two beers, two smash burgers, and two fries, all for $30. Reasonable pricing and the food was great.

First time here Street parking only Walked in and front area looked really small and kinda cramped Bar counter can seat about 8 people at the most Bar is well stocked There is a back patio that is more open and has a lot more seating available as well as heat lamps Service was ok Kinda slow Another party was getting their order taken before us and as the waitress was done taking their order I had to kindly reminder her that we were ready to order as well We ordered tater tots and shared a hamburger Food is OK Presentation of the drink I ordered was amazing drink itself tasted ok Snow crash $16 Prices are reasonable Over all this is a decent place for drinks and food

cuteeee ambiance and what are they doing in that espresso martini because it's the smoothest one i've ever drank. the rest of our drinks got a heavy handed pour and that i am thankful for. great place to be silly and enjoy the really well crafted vibes.

We love coming to North Light for their tasty drinks and snacks! You have to try their Umami Tots, they are incredible and so delicious. We tried the parklet for the first time and it was ok, the back patio is definitely a better location and where you want to be if you choose outdoors. The staff is always great and super friendly, if you haven't been yet you are missing out!

Watch your receipt here! I've been here twice (been meaning to post this review). The first time I came, I was excited to do so: a bar with a nicely curated book selection and a great atmosphere to sit, read, have a cocktail. I wasn't bothered with the limited food menu items as that wasn't my main reason for visiting. As mentioned, I just wanted to chill with a drink and read. The food - insanely average. Drink options - the same, insanely average. Atmosphere - good vibe. The bad part is that they randomly place items NOT ORDERED on your bill! This happened TWICE on two different occasions, it's a pattern not a mistake. The first time I went, after receiving my bill, there was a random item (grilled cheese) that I didn't order. I only had a single glass of wine while sitting in their back patio. I didn't initially notice this until after I had given my credit card to be charged. I informed the waiter. He then concurred it was an error, but he only created a new corrected bill and charged me again. I had to demand a credit for the previous erroneous bill that wasn't "voided". On my second visit, during happy hour with a friend, the same thing happened AGAIN! We were both charged for items not ordered, we ordered a few appetizers each and a glass of wine each. (This time I paid attention to the bill for accuracy before giving my credit card to be charged!). It was pointed out to the bar manager and he correctly gave us a correct bill removing the unordered food items (a cheeseburger mysteriously appeared). Seems like a pattern of presenting with an incorrect bill. Just be sure to look at your bill for accuracy. Seems like another reviewer mentioned this as well when an item he specifically didn't order came up.

came here on a whim with a friend on friday night. this place is so cute and feels like a bar you would find in a corner of NYC. we were greeted promoted even though the inside was packed. they offered to take our drink order while we waited for an open table. they have a vinyl player setup for the music vibe and dark moody lighting. it definitely gets noisy here so not ideal if you're trying to have a serious convo or intimate dinner but a perfect vibe for fun night out. the drinks were delicious and the bartenders were so friendly. i had the snowcrasher and it was 10/10!

I love this place so much, they have a great selection of books for you to bowler or buy. The drinks are perfectly exquisite like no others in town. Great ambience and great vibes. Just a lot of love for this please and great service! So good

So been living in Oakland for going on 15 years now. I'm not what you would call a "bar" person. I…read moretend to enjoy my cocktails, wine, and beer in the cozy confines of my own home. That said I'm occasionally inspired to go check out the local watering holes for a good pour, some food if possible, and just to be in the presence of the human pulsation. Walking into Tallboy on a Thursday afternoon was a bit like Nirvana for me. There is a comforting vibe of neighborhood and after work people shedding responsibility and "toe the lineness" and transitioning to pondering true meaning and the other side of the elliptical bend over nicely crafted cocktails and HOTDOGS! I am a hotdog fiend, and Tallboy has a very creative range on the menu that does not disappoint. From a basic onions/mustard, an Elote Dog, an a Coney Islandesque (it has chili) version. Some folk go to bar and line up shots (or craft cocktails). At Tallboy you can do that AND line up their hotdogs which I intend on doing in the very near future. The pleasantries don't stop at the food (there are other delicious snack items on their menu to choose from too). Tallboy has a fully stocked bar, and the menu has a list of really unique and delicious signature craft cocktails. I'm not a Mezcal drinker, but I ended up dubiously ordering their Guava Martini which to my smokey surprise is made with Mezcal. I stayed with the smokey fruitiness of this Guava Martini as it was my mistake that I did not read in the description it is made with Mezcal, and ended up chasing it with their Tamarindo Cocktail which also has Mezcal. To those who really enjoy Mezcal the Tallboy Guava Martini and the Tamarindo Cocktail do not disappoint. Both have that deep Smokey Mezcal essence, but cut with the fruit sweetness. I personally think the Tamarindo balances well with the Mezcal. The Guava Martini the Mezcal comes through stronger, but both are just the tonic to release any existential pinging going on in your head. If you really want to kick in the hyperdrive pair either of these with an Elote Dog. I had their Deli Dog which sufficed. I think the Deli Dog would pair better with their standard Martini, but hey let's us not bring that snobbiness into Tallboy. Tallboy has an element of cloak and dagger or secret treehouse club about it. What I mean here is there is no signage on the outside (please keep it that way!). When you walk past all you see is this quaint beigeish/yellow brick façade of an establishment which begs you to press your face to the glass and scan what in the blazes is going on in here! Before you know it you are caught in the Tallboy tractor beam, and you find yourself sitting at the bar with some kind of craft drank and hotdog pondering the space and the very nice old fashioned wainscoting painted a shade of green circa 1930 (my description of winning in life). The cadre of bartenders are all really pleasant folk, very attentive (checking in with you to see if you need another round, hotdog, or snack), have tight shaker skills, and they know their craft and the menu. Tallboy also has SLUSHIES, and I did not do a deep dive on them, but I'm positive they may/do put spirits in them; or not. Also I noticed other patrons with a beautiful enticing thing that looked like an ice cream sundae milkshake hybrid (it had what looked like whipped cream on top) in on old timey soda fountain ice cream goblet. This could be a craft cocktail they make with the slushie, but major props for serving it in that goblet. I will investigate on my next visit which I intend to be very soon. Tallboy is the kind of bar establishment I could easily adopt as my after work living room for a couple of hours everyday.

I'm vegetarian so was so excited to try the dogs - which are vegan. And I may be biased but you cannot tell that you're missing out on anything with all the flavor packed combos. The bun was fluffy and soft and you have multiple fun themed options to choose from. My partner and I ended up getting the deli dog and truffle meltdown. Deli was perfect - classic mix of spice and crunch with the spicy brown mustard and giardiniera peppers. And the truffle meltdown was so savory and decadent - totally different flavor profiles from each dog! We were only going to grab one drink but the menu was so inventive we ended up getting two. I ordered the banana hammock (which comes with a fire show) and espresso martini slushee which was is up there with the frozen Irish coffees I've had in New Orleans. Man writing this has my mouth watering... definitely coming back for more dogs, drinks, and vibes!

The space itself is attractive, with festive music and a lively atmosphere. It looks and feels like it should be a fun place to eat. I started with a Pisco sour, which was okay. Then I ordered the pulpo a la parrilla. The octopus seemed practically raw when it arrived. I sent it back, and when it returned it was incredibly chewy and still inedible. I'm not sure if the chef was having an off night, but something was clearly wrong with the preparation. I switched to the Costillas de Chancho, BBQ pork spare ribs with mashed sweet potatoes. The plate arrived with the mashed sweet potatoes literally steaming, in a way that made them seem freshly microwaved. The waitress tried to explain that the steam was from frying the ribs, which didn't really make sense, especially since the steam was clearly coming from the potatoes. Why are BBQ ribs being fried anyway? The ribs were also extremely chewy, and the mashed sweet potatoes were bland with almost no seasoning. The waitress had specifically asked about allergies or food preferences, and I told her I didn't like onions. The replacement dish then arrived completely covered in onions. Why ask if you're going to ignore the answer? Service wasn't great either. I had to take silverware from another table because I wasn't given any, the waitress wasn't particularly attentive, and the hostess seemed like she didn't want to be there. Then, to top it all off, the check had a 3% "operations fee" added to it. I didn't see this disclosed anywhere beforehand. Adding an unexplained fee at the end of an already disappointing meal just left an even worse impression. Nice-looking space and festive atmosphere, but unfortunately that's about where the positives ended for me. Two poorly prepared dishes, inattentive service, and a surprise fee on the check. I had high expectations based on the reviews, but I would not come back.

I was not causing a disturbance, and there was no reason for physical contact. Being grabbed so aggressively was uncomfortable and unprofessional. I hope management addresses this issue and speaks with the security staff about appropriate ways to interact with guests. First impressions matter, and this interaction immediately impacted my experience.
