They're there to charge as much as possible for lack luster results. My main issue is I recently brought my car in. Any legit and reputable mechanic I've ever gone to has never, ever charged extra for diagnosis if they fixed the car. Thus place did. $100 extra for nothing. I've been to plenty of places, diagnostics is just part of the general labor as long as they fix the vehicle (vs just having a diagnostics done with no repair.) I was desperate and stuck so this was the only place open and around. They took advantage of that and milked me for everything. Untrustworthy is the only word I can politely use to describe this place.

Thankfully, I found North Shore Shell as one of the only places open early on a Sunday in the burbs. Honest, affordable, and the kind man working also told me what was wrong with my breaks for free. Finding an honest mechanic that won't charge unnecessary fees is such a breath of fresh air. Coming here was definitely worth the 12 mile drive and I'll be back for whatever repairs I need as they have gained my trust.

Unlike BP down the street, the pumps actually work here! If you're about to run out of gas on your way to Highwood or on the way to high school, Shell's Pop 'n' Place is your stop. Conveniently located right on the outskirts of Downtown Highland Park, there is even a donation box for clothes and shoes. The gas is priced accordingly and there is no price gouging from what I can tell. Pop in if you get the chance!

Some officious and racist girl at the attendant stand tells me I can't use it because it's expired. Then she says she needs to call her supervisor who tells her to take all my expired receipts (all paid car washes mind you) and take my license down so as to not let me get future car washes. After all the weird weather, back and forth with snow and rain, and soooo much dirt, I celebrated the first warm day of the year and treated our car to a bath. It was time. It was a simple bath, with no bells and whistles, but now I can drive around with dignity in the school drop off line. If you didn't know, there's a car wash in the back of Shell. It's hidden, unless you see the sign at the pump. The great thing is if you plan to use the car wash, you have two options. Pay at the pump and receive $.10 off each gallon of gas, or if you don't want gas you can head to the attendant at the car wash and pay for one of the following three options: * Regular wash $5 * Plus wash adds sealer wax and under carriage rust inhibitor $6 * Premium will get you wheel brightener and polish wax for $7 I take the cheap seats for $5 and haven't tried the upgrade services, but there is no extra tip to pay, so maybe next time. You are on your own here, and they do have interior vacuums available right around the corner from the wash. There is a yearly car wash plan available. They gave us an optional punch pass. After a few washes the next one is free!

Aside from the really terrible and annoying payment processing machine (always quirky and broken), the wash is decent and gives us just enough dignity to drive our car around without tree sap or bird droppings from the birds that attack our car from the tree over our driveway. $8 for a super basic wash, but if our car gets extra dirty we opt for the $11 foam wash. We've never experienced any technical difficulties, but I know others have. We'll be back...thankfully it's been raining lately so we can save some $.
