Great place to go to get your required SMOG test done, if you live near downtown LBC. Like getting documents notarized, the process is heavily regulated by the state, but unlike a notary, it looks like a SMOG testing center can charge what they want. So the $40 out the door (including the mandatory $8.25 fee for the certificate) is a great price. I actually found a coupon from smogtips.com for $29.95 for this space, but once you add in the extras, it came out the same...so the tech didn't even take it. The $40 is listed clearly, and it seems like it would be the same for minivans and small SUVs as well (other places seem to have extra surcharges for that). Like others said, it's easy to drive in if you are next, but if somebody is getting tested, you would need to drive into the auto repair shop driveway right after and walk back to the garage to get in line. You can only enter going South on Long Beach Blvd (since Long Beach Blvd is a divided road). There is a small waiting room with a TV showing a local station. Once our car got hooked up, it took about 15 minutes to complete. They take credit cards, and will give you a computerized Vehicle Inspection Report. Now I just need to wait for the electronic submission to be recorded at the DMV, so I can renew my registration on-line. Conclusion: the price is good, and quick once you get started. Not the most exciting thing ever, getting a smog check, but it is necessary if I want to continue to be able to legally drive, so I was looking for a convenient and affordable place to get it done, and yelp suggested I go here. Yelp was correct: their $40 price is on the low end of standard (they have a coupon on their website, but turns out I didn't actually need it to get that price), the guy working there (who I think may have also been the owner) was super friendly, and I was in and out in 10 minutes. My only complaint: they really need a better sign directing traffic - they have a big sign out in front, that points into their one-car garage, so if someone else is already getting a smog check (as was the case when I got there), it is completely non-obvious where to go. You actually turn into the following drive-way, which looks like it leads into a car-wash, and then park around the back of the building. Their sign out front really needs to tell people that. Basically the most affordable Smog Check station around. There tends to be a long wait because they basically have one guy that does everything. But he's extremely nice and I can't help but admire how hard-working he is. There looks to be two entrances, don't go into the first one, go into the second driveway. They have a worker simply telling people this one thing. I know because I spent a lot of time in the waiting room watching. LOL! Oh, the waiting room is not great. The TV only has like one child station and there's a really dirty couch in it. But it's one of those places you're not expecting to have luxury furniture, so suck it up buttercup! LOL!! Great service (nice and honest people), quick check, and the best smog test experience I've ever had. The parking is a little confusing when you first pull up (just park alongside the car wash or back fence area and they'll bring it around for you). Making an appointment is best since they can get busy and are right on time between cars. As a grown woman getting smog tested is always an anxious experience, with an older car everyone is always trying to pull something last minute to up the price. Needed a smog check for my DMV registration but wanted to find an affordable place since it was right after the holidays and I was short on money. Saw North Star's Check-in discount which made it a lot cheaper than some other places. I decided to go here to check it out. Other than it being in the Downtown Long Beach area, the Smog Check area really had only one spot for a car and a small adjacent parking spot (spot not lot). Luckily, the person in charge was nice enough to do all the reparking and rearranging for the cars because I am definitely bad at tight parking situations (he even backed it and an reangled my car so I could easily exit the lot when my smog check was finished). What really touched me though and helped me to find out how genuine North Star is was when he took the time to help out this mother and daughter who were confused and had questions about the NEIGHBORING business, which they didn't know just closed at the time (he did this while waiting for my smog test to finish). And they weren't even his customers!!! When my service was finished, check out was fast and he also gave a few reference business cards with a coupon on the back. Would highly recommend! The only positive experience I got here, was what I came for...my smog certificate! First off I came here is simply because I read somewhere these people charge 32.00 and that's what I get for being cheap! I should have known something was wrong when it took a good five minutes to find an employee in this place. I'm walking all around looking everywhere then I see this kid (who obviously saw me) peering at me behind a makeshift cubicle he comes out and I tell him the nature of my business and informs me it'll be 50.00. Instead of following my first mind and leaving I stay, give him my keys and this dummy drives my car on the wrong side of the street into the stall where they perform the test. It didn't take too long but since it was over the allotted time he quote me I decided to inquire and he said "oh, I just finished". Then he yells asking if I'm paying with cash or credit. He comes over I give him a hundred dollar bill and he looks at it like its Yen or some other type of foreign currency and says I'll be right back with your change............................................. After ten minute he come from I don't know where with a wallet full of money and gives me my change! Totally unprofessional staff! Both look to be around 19-20 years old. I had another issue and I inquired about why there was such a significant difference on my gas gauge about a 1/4 tank missing! None of these brilliant young people could tell me why but had the audacity to attempt to offend me by being rude. ("Oh what? Now I gotta buy you gas?) was his response! I told him to call the owner Jeremy who sounded a little bit more intelligent and explained to me that it is impossible to use that much gas during the test. I said okay whatever and hung up the phone.... When I get in the car I notice its on a slant! That is why the gauge was reading close to 1/2 tank. I drive off and the gauge goes back up! Tip for Jeremy: get your employees some uniforms! It is super tacky to see folks dressed in street clothes working on cars, Especially polo type shirts and Rocowear jeans.
