    On our way

First, a general, huge thank you to the staff at NEM- please see below. This email includes pictures of our Trek on Saturday Feb 23rd, 2019 to summit Mt Washington; it also includes some links to newspaper clippings & a picture of a plaque. Review: The mark of a great service company is its willingness to empower their people to do great things. While there are many guide companies in the Whites, Northeast Mountaineering is one of the great ones. I was scheduled for a skills class on a Saturday with a summit attempt the next day, Sunday. I was solo, but matched with 4 others for the Sunday climb. As is often routine in the White Mountains, the weather Sunday was looking poor- so I asked about making the summit trip on Saturday instead. This is tough to change with so many schedules- but my first contact was a NEM guide, Jordan, who relayed the message to Corey and, within an hour, made the change. Very responsive. To my surprise, when I arrived the next day, I was the only client. The others bailed, but NEM kept their commitment to me to attempt the summit. Very dedicated. I met my guide, Dakota, and we discussed our climb. I mentioned a family connection to the mountain, a great uncle, one of two climbers who died in 1932 attempting to reach the top. I knew of a cross marking the place they collapsed and asked if we could include a visit to the spot in our plan. Immediately, a flurry of activity between Dakota, Judy (Dispatcher) and two other guides working on a solution. In 15 min, the team agreed on a completely different ascent, traverse and decent. Very impressive. Their commitment to the client is systemic- a company energized by the goals of the client. The hike was absolutely amazing. Dakota checked my equipment; he explained the plans for the climb including route, weather, emergencies and our mandatory turnback time. During the hike, Dakota was professional yet personal. He regularly took the opportunity to teach about technique, contingency, snow conditions, past experiences and opportunities for future excursions. His passion for the outdoors was obvious and shared. A great sense of humor but with an keen eye for his role as guide. Several times, he would quietly plant a foot hold and allow me to pass ensuring that, if I tripped up, the fall would be short and humorous- and nothing more. Dakota and I started as client/guide and left as friends. Very happy. Our summit was one of the most amazing moments in my life-- only to be surpassed, moments later, in finding the cross of my Great Uncle, 420' from the top of Mt. Washington. Thank you Dakota and thank you NEM. Chris Hyldburg Feb 23rd, 2019

My wife and I did the waterfall rappelling yesterday and it was AMAZING from start to finish! Our guides, Dave and Sam, were top notch! I recommend bringing water shoes and to rent the wetsuits and gloves from them to make your trip most enjoyable!

Stop sitting on the couch wishing you could be adventurous and go! My husband and I did the Introduction to Ice-Climbing and it was not only action-packed, but it is challenging enough that you leave with the endorphins of being on the mountain in winter AND the satisfaction of feeling like you accomplished something. I have a disability that renders my left leg and foot all but useless, which is not a small problem in ice-climbing. Peter, our guide, was patient and steadfast in teaching techniques, providing tips, and suggesting real time modifications that allowed me and every other person in our group to make it to the top. I would book this excursion a million times over and plan to do waterfall rappelling after the thaw. If summit-bagging, hiking, rock climbing, or rapelling are more your style, they have that, too-- no experience necessary.

We summitted despite having no real winter climbing experience.

We did the one day Mount Washington winter ascent yesterday with Corey as our guide and it was fantastic. We were 5 completely inexperienced climbers - to give you an idea of how inexperienced, one of our group had pajama pants on as his base layer... From helping us find the right gear to showing us how to actually use it to talking me through a slightly scary section, Corey was so patient and all around just a really good guy. I can't say enough good things about our experience and we would all highly recommend using Northeast Mountaineering.

Hiking Mt. Washington in the winter is a difficult and sometimes scary feat, but with Corey and Brett as your guides there is nothing to worry about! They not only make climbing safe but they make it fun. They are very detailed about how to prepare and what to bring on the climb- they also have most of the gear available for rent if you don't already have it, which makes things a lot easier. I was one of the slower hikers in the group and they were able to split up the group so that the less experienced people could go at a more comfortable pace for them and not drag down the others- it worked out great and everyone got the experience they were looking for. Both Brett and Corey keep things positive and the encouragement flowing. All in all it was a most excellent adventure and I will definitely plan to climb with Northeast Mountaineering again!

My boyfriend and I did the waterfall rappelling and it was AMAZING! So much fun and one of our favorite activities of our trip. Corey and Doug were our guides for the day and I cannot say enough good things about them, they were professional, encouraging, friendly and most importantly they knew what they were doing and made us feel safe because let's be honest it would have been even more terrifying rappelling down a 100ft waterfall while feeling like the guides were inexperienced or distracted. The conditions of the equipment that we rented were pretty well kept (we rented wetsuit jackets which we could have done without but probably made the experience a little more enjoyable and also we rented gloves which I HIGHLY recommend! Harness and helmet were provided to us) and most importantly the equipment that were were rappelling on was in great well kept condition. NOW for the actual fun! We met at the bunkhouse and got fit for our equipment, watched a safety video, and ran through some practice runs in the backyard. We then drove ourselves about 25 min to Ripley's Falls. Hiked about 20 minutes mostly uphill (I saw a couple reviews mention they weren't prepared for the hike and thought it was tough- how else do you expect to get to a 100ft waterfall?!? It was not difficult just a little steep). When you get to the falls we then hiked up the side of the waterfall on a trail and this path was a tad bit steeper, but short and again not difficult. Corey and Doug set up all the ropes and equipment and then the rappelling began! My boyfriend and I went down the waterfall at the same time on separate ropes, he started before me so we were spaced out. The first time we went down we decided to start right in the waterfall instead of doing a run outside of the water. IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!! I was a tad bit terrified bc I've never done any rappelling and found myself having a blast and also being challenged. You don't just walk straight down the waterfall (especially the top in the fastest water) so finding my next step and move is what I found challenging and it was slippery. Doug was at the bottom, he unhooked us when we got down and back up the trail we went and got to do it 2 more times and they were also a blast. I chose to go down a little bit of a different path then I did the first time so it made it feel different , not the same old boring waterfall as some others have reviewed. 3 times to rappel doesn't sound like much but I actually found myself a little tired after my third rappel (we also hiked mount Washington the day before so that could have contributed) and felt completely satisfied with our experience. While Corey and Doug packed up the equipment we got to splash around a bit in the pool of water at the bottom of the fall. The hiking back down in our wet water shoes was not thrilling but expected, maybe pack a dry pair of shoes and socks in the bag you bring up. We then drove back to the bunkhouse and turned in our equipment. Off to our next adventure we went from there. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! WISH I COULD DO ALL OF THE ACTIVATES THAT THEY OFFER!!!!!

Guides were friendly and reassuring for our water rappelling trip. Would like to try ice climbing next time.

Take Hurricane Mountain Road off of Route 16 near the Intervale Scenic Vista. The Parking lot will be on the right near the summit of the road. Warning - this road is steep and winding! The trail is well marked and is approximately one mile in each direction. It is a slow, gradual climb with a lot of tree roots in the beginning that eventually give way to scattered rocks and then to all rock on the summit. If you are not an experienced hiker or do not have the proper gear (I fall into both of these categories) I would not attempt this when the ground is wet as it can be slippery on a good day. It's a good hike Spring through Fall, but hiking it in the Fall is by far my favorite. The view of the changing colors from the top is amazing.

When we noticed an opening, we asked nearby drivers if we could squeeze in, and they had no issue with it. As we were parking, an employee approached us in a very aggressive and unprofessional manner and told us we could not park there. We apologized and explained that we were not from the area and had not seen any signs. We were told that the rule was "well known to locals" and that a sign existed at the front of the line--more than 25 cars ahead, making it impossible for us to see. Despite the surrounding drivers having no objection, the employee demanded we leave and became increasingly hostile when we asked questions or requested a manager. At that point, the interaction escalated unnecessarily, and we decided it wasn't worth the confrontation and left. I've never experienced such a level of rudeness from a staff member over an honest misunderstanding. Clear signage and more professional communication would have avoided the entire situation. Someone even yelled out "stop being a parking nazi". I would have otherwise liked to review the venue itself, but we were unable to do so as we never made it inside.
