Maybe my expectations were too high. The weird thing is that they were set by...Northern Lights Electric. They'd replaced a failed doorbell in my condos call box a few years ago. Fast/cheap/easy/professional All good. So when my bell failed again this year, I called them again. Instead of replacing the button, he screwed a completely different doorbell onto the side of the call box because he didn't have the part with him (see picture). When I pointed out to him that this wasn't what I wanted, he said it's totally normal and was puzzled that I didn't think it was fine. And it was on me because I wasn't actually there when he did the work (I was available by phone and we'd talked shortly beforehand). When I asked him to take it off, he said he couldn't because now there's holes in the box, so we'll need a new call box. But I was almost at the end of the hour he'd booked for the work (he fixed a closet light as well), so it would cost more to have him call and check on parts. I said nevermind at that point, stop the job there at that point, I don't want to be charged any more. I did several calls/emails with customer service to get some kind of satisfaction (idea of spending $400 on a new box myself they suggested not being a satisfying option). They wer e mostly nice, but eventually I gave up after not hearing back from them for a few weeks and fixed it myself. Really unsatisfying experience from my perspective, but take it with a grain of salt. The light they replaced in my closet is great. No problem at all with that. If the work in the pic looks good to you, you'll probably be fine with them. read more

So we asked Northern Lights to do some major electrical work in our kitchen - install recessed lights (4-5), electrical boxes/work for our electric stove, and also several outlets. It was a lot of work and they charged us fairly. The work seems to be of good quality, though its too early to tell, but the customer service we received from Nicholas McCourt (owner?) was atrocious. The electrician accidentally left the ceiling tiles in our basement on the floor- kind of a mess (but not a huge deal- as it wasn't in a high traffic area). We called to see if they could fix it - were told to call when we happened to be home to see if they were in the area-- that doesn't usually work well when you work 9-5. So I ultimately called a few weeks later when I realized I should probably schedule an appointment and also thought we had an issue with their previous work (turned out that it was not the issue we thought it was). We were asked to photo the basement mess and Nicholas generally treated us unkindly and with suspicion. We sent all the appropriate pictures and the electrician came -- but I felt attacked even when he came over - and also stated that they installed an outlet that they totally had not. We paid over $2500, and probably should receive better service than we did. Their service was disappointing, at best. I want to say that Ashley- who schedules all of Northern Light's appointments is amazing- communicative, kind, and clear. So in a nutshell, work is good, service not so much. read more

I just bought my first home and the inspection report called for electrical work. In mid-September I made an appointment with Northern Lights Electric to come out the first week of October. The woman I spoke with told me I would get an email confirmation of the appointment and invited me to send copies of the relevant inspection report pages in response. 1 week later I get an email canceling my appointment. The email read: "I hope this email finds you well. Do to the fact that we have had overwhelming demands on our electricians and wanting to service our customers to the superior service we strive for, we have had to cut back on our on-site estimate appointments. Unfortunately we will need to cancel your appointment on Wednesday 10/7." I find it bizarrely unprofessional that NLE decided to cancel my appointment via email and furthermore, to do so because they are overbooked. A phone call would've been much more appropriate in this circumstance. Offering to reschedule would've been welcomed here too. It took some time to find another electrician who wasn't booked for a month out to come by and give us an estimate. NLE left us in a tight spot. Beware of this company, they are happy to cancel appointments a week after they are made and will do so via email. read more

You won't find a more overall great full-service electrician company! All the folks working there are friendly, helpful, rapid responders. I can't say enough good things about Northern Lights. They installed my Tesla home charger in 2017. Came on time, kept in touch by text and photos to be sure that the unit was just how and where I wanted it. Feb 2021 my unit started to misbehave. They got back to me within an hour and advised what to do next to resolve my issue. Yup, and their prices are good too. Go for them. read more

Based on my telephone interactions, I had high expectations of excellent service. All I have to say is that my experience with the company failed to meet my expectations. They came to look at a fan control that was partially working. The electrician pulled the switch out of the wall to confirm the type of switch. While he was screwing the switch back into the wall, the electrician nicked one of the wires coming out of the controller. A popping sound, sparks, black singe, and a switch that is completely dead now...yet the electrician says that it wasn't him. How could it not be? (I would love to post photos and will if I can figure out how to.)The company will not take responsibility for a replacement and I still had to pay for the service call. T., a master electrician with 30+ years of electrical experience , called 45 minutes ahead of the scheduled time to let me know that he would be early or on time. He was actually early and put booties on to protect my floors before entering the house. He covered my bed with a tarp to keep it clean while he worked.He easily installed my ceiling fan and set up my remote. He even plastered my ceiling where there was a small gap from where he had to widen the hole in my ceiling to fit in the fan. When he had finished, he cleaned everything up so well, you would never have known that he had been there. He was extremely professional, courteous, and friendly and answered all of my questions. He then looked at projects on my electrical "wish list" and wrote an estimate. He even took an overhead light bulb that had been cross-threaded out from my porch light and replaced it for me. I called for a quote and the woman on the phone took all my info. The then provided me a quote over email which I was confused by especially since I live locally. I get that they can't quote every job but they missed some of the work in the quote. I chose not to go with them then until Nick the owner called to inquire why and I told him. I gave him the scope over the phone and he said it shouldn't change much. He then sent out his general manager to come take a look at the job. Then I got a quote which was almost double what the first quote was and this is after Nick had said that it shouldn't change that much. I then emailed asking for a reduction and they did give me a slight reduction. So I agreed to go with them and give a deposit on the job and they were to start on a Thursday. I make sure I was gonna be home on Thursday but then at 4 o'clock on Wednesday they called and said they had to cancel my appointment and that they couldn't come until middle of the next week. At that point I said why don't we just cancel a job and you can refund me. Without any try to accommodate they said that they would refund me and cancel the job. I guess they really didn't want my business from the beginning. I am not saying they are a bad company this is just my frustrating experience read more

Excellent experience. Contacted them through their website form. I got a call back from the office staff in less than 24 hours. They got the basic information about the job, prepared and emailed me an estimate in less than 24 hours. The electrician they sent (JT) was great! He showed up on time, patiently answered my questions, fixed everything quickly (and one of the items was a little more complicated than I expected). He finished the job more quickly than expected, so the final cost was actually 25% *below* the estimate I was given which is always a pleasant surprise. I sent them an email about the great service, and I got a call back from the office manager almost immediately, thanking me for taking the time to give feedback. I liked the personal touch of calling me (instead of just replying to the email). I'm going to hire them for more jobs, and I'd recommend them without hesitation. read more

Northern Lights Electric did some work for our condo association in 2016 - upgraded service to 200 amps along with other smaller jobs. The work went according to plan and we were happy with the end result and the price. I sold my condo recently and during the closing process we found out Northern Lights never closed the permit they opened with the City of Boston. I spoke to them four times to ask for their help as the permit is still open in their name. They said they had no documentation about the job and stated the permit was probably not closed out because of scheduling issues with the owners. That is not true and I am disappointed that Northern Lights didn't take on the responsibility of at least helping to close out the permit. If I could I'd separate out the ratings: 4 for the electricians who did the work and 0 for Northern Lights management. read more

I paid these people $2242.20 to change most of the switches in my house and add one. It took two guys eleven hours. One guy kept getting phone calls. The switch they added was too small to satisfy my needs. They also broke a glass lamp shade and wrecked the wallpaper I just spent $2000 being hung. They're incredibly slow. read more

I had northern lights install 3 ceiling fans and one high hanging chandelier. I left for a Dr.s appt and a ceiling fan was hung that was way too low and not designed for the room. Given how obviously low the fan was and that the tech probably does this everyday, a little common sense would have been to give me a call before hanging it, knowing there would be an issue. Instead I came back to a fan that could hit me in the head. I had to take the fan down, return it, purchase another and hang it. I contacted northern lights about this issue and requested a refund. They said they would give me back $89 reflecting time spent hanging the fan in exchange for a favorable review. They also accepted no responsibility and solely blamed me for purchasing the wrong fan. I decided it just wasn't worth writing a false positive review in exchange for a credit back. Hopefully, others will stay away as well. I also found their rates very high compared to other places. All told I spent north of $700 and walked away with frustration and much more work to get the job done. read more

We have a 100 yr old house, so needless to say the electrical systems in the house were less than great. We've used NLE for several projects including correcting/updating wiring, adding outlets and installing recessed lighting. Nick has always stayed w/in the original budget and completed the work on time. The workers were always courteous and showed up on time. Just hired Northern Electric to help us mount our flat screen TV above our fireplace, and could NOT be happier. Booking was easy, made the appointment 2 weeks ago and they were able to accommodate my schedule. Steve and Nate were very nice guys, and knowledgeable electricians. They were punctual (5 minutes early in fact - and called to notify me 30 minutes ahead), professional, and very courteous... they even wore shoe covers in the house (greatly appreciated!) We have used Northern Lights for several major projects in our 1930s home over the last five years, and have been happy with their work. Good and detailed communication about estimates and invoices, they show up on the scheduled day, work appears to be of good quality and when problems have come up with the original plan -- never know what you'll find in an old home -- they've worked with me and been clear about options for adjusting on the fly. For larger jobs they do tend to book weeks to months out, but they do stick to the date and have even been able to move things up in some cases. read more

I needed to install an EVSE outside of my condo so that I could charge up my electric car, and the company that I bought the EVSE from recommended Northern Lights. Communication by email was easy and I was able to get an estimate. Although I was told that scheduling the work would probably be a month out (no big deal, since I had to special order the EVSE anyway), I was able to get an appointment within two weeks. On the day that the work was scheduled, Sam and Shawn showed up on time, explained everything that would be done, how the final cost might be higher than the estimate, and answered all of the questions that I had while the work was in process, even if they had to stop what they were doing. (They also put up with my little dog, who was being a stinker.) Once the work was done --- sooner than I'd expected -- and the EVSE was working, Sam said that he would be back in a few hours with an inspector to make sure that everything was done right. Again, they showed up when they said they would. The final cost was a little higher than the estimate, but I'd expected that, and with the quality of the work and the warranty, it was well worth it. I'd be glad to use Northern Lights again. read more

I contacted Northern Lights to complete some electrical work I wanted to have done inside my home; not too long there after someone came by and gave me a quote for the work I was seeking. I agreed to their quote and I also agreed to the earliest date in which they would be able to perform this work (which would be 2-3 months later). I wanted a fair amount of work done and I was assured by BOTH the electrician who initially came by my house and later after my followup call with their office, that it would only take 1 day to complete all the work I was requesting. Months later, when the electricians arrived to do the scheduled work, I was asked right away by one of the electricians who from Northern Lights had given me the quote because there was too much work to be done in one day. I pressed him further on this and he said he was "just the middle guy". One of the electricians from the time of arrival and several times throughout the course of the day tried to sell me an electrical evaluation for $395 where Northern Lights would basically check all the electrical connections in my home and at a "later date" would rewire everything that needed rewiring. Ballpark estimate for my home I was told the rewiring would cost 1,000 - 2,700 and take 2 to 3 weeks to complete. I was like I just want the work I have been waiting months for to be completed upon this agreed upon date and that I could not wait another couple of months to get them back in to do both the electrical evaluation and the work I wanted to have in the first place. First of all, why didn't the original electrician offer this electrical evaluation to me 2 - 3 months earlier when giving me the original quote? It is obvious that I live in an old house. I just moved into my house and I have several projects going on. With a baby arriving soon, I had a time-line of all the thing I need to get done before my wife gave birth. It already took me a couple of months to get Northern Electric in the door to do the work I wanted to have done before my wife gave birth. -This set my projects back as I had other contractors lined up to do finishing work in my home based on the electrical work being completed on this particular day. Like I said, I do live in an old house and the electricians that came indicated they would not do some of the main things I hired them to do like install ceiling fixtures (where ceiling fixtures had previously been) and to add light switches for these ceiling fixtures and that I should get their electrical evaluation done while they were there and they would have the time to do the electrical evaluation since they were not going to do all the work I originally requested months ahead of time. If the electricians knew almost immediately upon walking through my front door that they would not be able to perform the work I was requesting and was agreed upon than why didn't the original electrician do the same minimal due diligence to determine 2-3 months beforehand that his company would not be able to do the work I had been seeking on the agreed upon date? Worst of all, though the bigger items I was seeking were not addressed, I managed to spend $200 dollars more than the original quote. While $200 may not seem like a lot of money, bear in mind the big ticket items on my quote were not done and this pushes out all the other work I have scheduled with other companies. I also felt nicked and dimed by these guys throughout the whole process. I understand that Northern Electric is a business but there reaches a point where things become tacky. For example (and I could list numerous examples) when the electrician was leaving he told me they would take the trash with them. The trash consisted of a fan box, a light box, and some wall switch and outlet plates. I am like okay and he was well we will have to charge you $25. Obviously for such a minimal amount of items, I threw them out myself the very next day with the trash. I mean really, after all I just spent you want to offer me $25 to basically take away two small boxes. I have since hired another company to do the electrical work I was originally seeking from Northern Electrical Lights. read more

I worked with Northern Lights Electric on a few projects around my house: replacing eyeball recessed lights with actually recessed lights, installing a bathroom vent fan and light (my house was built in the 40's, when proper venting was apparently not a thing), installing a new circuit panel (the original panel was overloaded), and a couple other smaller projects. They arrived promptly to ensure they could get all of the work done in one day. The team was very friendly and professional. I was working from home, so they would give me a heads up whenever they had to shut off power to ensure that anything I was working on wouldn't be lost. The team was also great about being flexible when it came to setting the appointment. My schedule is crazy and so is theirs (they're in high demand because they're great!), and it's tough to reach me by phone, so we coordinated most everything via email, which was very convenient. The overall experience was great from beginning to end. The work looks great and I am so happy to have these updates in place. I've also worked with them on previous projects and had an equally positive experience, so I can confirm that the quality of work and their professionalism is consistent. They are professional, prompt, and in my experience always do the job correctly, which is quite something if you have experience with other electricians. They have always passed inspection on the first time and they have always pulled a permit. They have fixed mistakes other electricians have made (when those electricians did not pass the inspection multiple times). They do take credit card, which is a plus. The one thing is you get what you pay for--they are a little pricier than other electricians I have run across. read more

The work this company did for me was satisfactory but they have a long way to go in terms of customer service. I called to schedule a work service in response to a coupon I was emailed for 10% off any work. The email indicated that the work needed to be scheduled by a specified date and completed by another date. I called before the specified date (8/12) and scheduled the work before the specified end date (8/31). When I called to make the appointment I stated that I was scheduling the appointment in response to the email I received from them for 10% off work. I was told that the 10% would be applied. When the service person finished their work they told me the amount that was due, which they wanted to be paid on the spot. I requested an invoice and was told that the invoice would be sent out by the main office a few days later. I paid for the work but was surprised when I received the invoice several days later that indicated no discount. I contacted the company to state there had been an error as no discount was applied to my order. I was told that they would not honor the discount as I did not present the email I had received to the service person. I indicated that I was never instructed to present the email to the service person, nor did the email advertisement indicate the that the email needed to be presented to the service person. It simply stated "call or email today," which I did do. I even forwarded the email with the discount information to the company as a way to demonstrate that I had received the email. I was told that it didn't matter because I didn't show the email to the service person. I told the person on the phone, Nick, that I felt mislead by receiving an email advertising a discount for which I did not receive on the basis that I did not following instructions I was never given. At this point Nick laughed and hung up on me. I won't be using this company for business again. read more
