I may not be the most impartial reviewer when it comes to hardware stores because I've never been in one I truly loved... nevertheless, my husband tricked me in to accompanying him to Northern Tool today, so here's the scoop- there was a lot of stuff packed into this warehouse-esque store... in fact, I was tickled but not surprised to see that men can easily shop for clothing while they fondle various tools and implements of destruction here- I saw some fetching navy Dickies coveralls, gardening hats, lightweight jackets disguised as "welding jackets," etc. etc. It's definitely a little hard to find stuff in here, and the aisles are super small. However, I will say they have a killer deal on dog beds. $10 apiece. I am not joking, $10. I've never seen one that cheap. Now fine, they aren't high quality. But if your pooch is a bed chewer like one of mine is, you don't want to invest in a good bed anyway... so the ones Northern Tool is selling is perfect. Word of warning- the staff isn't particularly helpful- the cashier was sullen at best and when we were leaving the store with a full cart, an employee walked out the doors in front of us and basically slammed it into our cart, because she was too busy trying to leave to notice a paying customer standing right behind her- usually even another patron would hold the door for a customer coming out with a full cart, but not this lady. The good news is she didn't turn around even after she did that, just kept going right out to her car without a care in the world. Nevertheless, my husband assures me that Northern Tool has reasonable prices and good brands, so it's better than going to Harbor Freight and cheaper than going to Pleasants. read more

BUYER BEWARE! I walked in the day before a snowstorm needing a new battery for my portable generator. Naively thought I'd be in and out in a few minutes, but 20 minutes later, I walked out after one of the absolute worst customer service experiences of my life. I'll spare you the details, but suffice it to say: The employees don't know their stuff, and they sure as heck don't care about actually trying to help you. It's like I didn't exist. I needed to buy a hand truck for work and the selection was VERY limited, like a selection of 2, and one was out of stock. There is never enough people working there and the one person I find is always helping another customer and no one else is available to help so you have to wait for the one employee you do see to finish with the other customer. In May 2012 I visited - here's my google review: I work nearby and have been here several times - the other (google) reviewers are not wrong. Today I called to find out if they had tires in stock and a gruff gentleman told me they did, asked me about sizes and gave me a price. When I went in, the prices were different. There were two employees on the floor and no one greeted me. I inadvertently found the guy I had talked to and he spent some time looking for the one he told me about, but it was no longer being stocked in his system. He seemed very tired. The cashier who opened another line for me was pleasant and the tires I bought rang up at the price he gave me on the phone. Seems to be a poor management issue. In June I went back to return the tires and pick up some hubs - J.R. Lynch was on the floor and was so super helpful, genuine and courteous. His customer service attitude added a star. read more

The parts service in this place is absolutely horrible. The guy at the parts counter would not even assist me with a locating a part for my mower as I was not using all OEM parts. He would not even look any prices up in the system unless I was going to verbally commit to buying replacement OEM immediately. Completely disrespectful, condescending, and lacked any real knowledge of the engine in question. Their "recommendation" would have cost me over $200. Fortunately a quick trip to Tractor Supply Company and a brief talk with their folks resulted in me getting the part I was looking for for only $10 and no attitude. read more

Northern Tool Henrico on Broad Street: I bought a General Inverter Generator online from Generac. Bought withing year never opened until i lost power. I followed the directions and it would not start so I called Generac 800 and they had me do the same several times...Told me to bring it into Northern Tool...they charged me 40 and did nothing as it started first try. Since Generac had me try several times it likely flooded But Northern would not budge on the 40 fee said flooded is not covered by warranty but they did nothing but start it and even after I called they refused to budge . Told him i wanted speak to supervisor and he hemmed and hawed and then said i will just write a review everywhere i can and that he ( Northern Tool) has poor customer service . He said it takes time to write these things up..my guess is he spend 5 minutes at most so thats $480.00 hour SOUNDS LIKE A RIP OFF for doing nothing read more

Walked up to register number one and told the lady working there I needed repair part, I was answered with the sarcastic comment "I'd like a million dollars". My lawnmower has fallen into a black hole. I went there because the issue may have been under warranty and they are a Honda dealer. I agree the issue is not a warranty issue, but they are going to charge me $260 for handling a $75 part that will take a half hour to install. Whatever, if that's the cost it's the cost. I took it to them more than three weeks ago. Ten days ago I was told it needed a carburator, but they don't have any and would have to order. Honda dealer without a common part- ok, whatever, order it. It's been 10 days and a guy who struggled to put a sentence together gives me some crap about it being on back order. I anticipated this, so I've confirmed online I could get a Honda manufactured carburator in 2-5 days, but these guys are giving the "back order" nonsense. Obviously, if the work ever gets done and I get the mower back, I won't even look a this place as I drive by in the future. Truly the most ridiculous service experience I've ever had. read more

Northern tool is ok but their selection of stuff is a little odd. I bought a winch for a truck here a couple of years ago and bought a dump wagon for my lawn mower recently. They are not your typical hardware store, I don't come here to often only when I need a specific item. So if you can't find it at your local hardware store there is a good chance you can find it here. read more

I purchased a wood stove for $500 from Northern Tool. My bank account was credited 3x ($1500) for that same purchase on three separate occasions!! For a whole WEEK Northern Tool had me going back and forth among their departments and my bank, were rude and NEVER acknowledged any wrong doing. After several phone calls, their response was they would send a fax to my bank, and I sould wait until it gets resolved to get my money back. Then I found that it took more than one day for them to do even send it. This had me frustrated and without sleep for an entire week, and messed up with my finances terribly. Wouldn't recommend the risk of buying from them to my worst enemy, I would say Avoid Northern Tool! read more

I can't find the Fredericksburg store but that's the one i'm referencing. This is my first yelp review. I've been dissatisfied with other stores or products but never felt the need to complain, especially in a public forum. I'm rounding numbers and cost because I can't remember every cost to the penny. I purchased a gas powered Pressure Washer from NTC, it was on sale for 200.00 in September of 2015 Within a week the wand started leaking. I take it up there and they said that parts not covered under warranty. 30.00 bucks for a new wand. A week later the hose started leaking. I didn't even ask, I just purchased a new one for 20.00 Within 2 weeks the new hose got a big bubble in it and eventually blows out. Yes, another hose for 20.00 At about 4 months the washer started spraying everywhere. It appeared to be coming for the pump but it was hard to tell with all the water spraying everywhere. I only used it several times before it got cold then I stored it in the garage for the rest of the winter. I pulled it out in late January early February because I needed to wash my dog crates. That's when the water was spraying everywhere. I took it in and after a week they tell me the pump was cracked and that it must've had water in it still. I told them that I made sure it was unhooked from the hose and stored in my garage. They then tell me i'm supposed to take a high pressure air hose and blow it through the line where the hose hooks up because this pressure washer holds water and will crack if you don't blow it out. No one mentioned that nor did it say that anywhere in the instructions. I'm not an idiot, I know water will crack the pump and thats why I unhooked the hose. I was quoted 160.00 and when I got to pick it up the bill was 195.00 because I had to pay a 35 shop bill that should've been included with the estimate. Once again I get the manager. I asked if they would remover he 35.00 sense that wasn't quoted. She said NO!! That forces me to call the corporate office. That person was incredibly helpful and the reduced the pump by 35.00. So, I paid the 160.00 and yes, that's close to what I paid for the washer to start with. I asked the manager, can I just buy another one for 200.00 and call it a day? She said no, they aren't on sale at the moment. They should be on sale in the next week or two. Really, you can't make this right by selling me ANOTHER washer at the same price I purchased the other one? Why I did this is beyond me, but I had them fix it. They said the pump is much better and I won't have that problem again. The day I brought the washer home from the pump repair the engine wasn't running right. It wouldn't idle and kept cutting off. Needless to say, it will only stay running for 15-30 seconds every time I start it. No, I'm not taking it in and paying 300+ for a new engine. So now, I have a giant paper weight that I can't even sell for parts. Heading to the junk yard and then to Home Depot to get a good machine! Total I paid for this junk I purchased in September... 200 for the power washer 30 for the new hose 40 for two new hoses 160 for a new pump That's 430 for a piece of equipment that isn't worth 5 bucks... Absolute junk! What really got me is at the end, one of the people ask why I would've purchase the crappy one to start with. REALLY, this is my fault for trusting that the products purchased at you store would last at least last 6 months! Ridiculous, I'd stay away from this store!! read more

I went in to the Midlothian Store to make a purchase. When assisting me with what I needed the salesman and the store manager got involved and helped me TREMENDOUSLY!! They totally gave of themselves in what I needed and why I needed it. I left the store with tears in my eyes to know that they were such caring people in my needs. My situation was a little different but they certainly jumped right in and went over and beyond I could ever have dreamed anyone would!! Thank you guys! You are the best!! read more

I have been in hardware stores since I was little and this is absolutely the worse one I have ever experienced. The customer service is not there at all. They are not helpful and rude. They talk to you as if you do not know anything and because I do I know that they are full of it. They blame everything on being a small store and corporate. If they are a small store then why have corporate. They never have anything in stock and their prices are ridiculous. I would suggest going to Tractor Supply where they are knowledgeable, prices are good, and service is outstanding. read more
