Saturday morning when leaving the hotel to drive to the ski hill about 8:30AM, the temperature was negative 11. I had a check engine light and noticed other electrical lights on the dash and was getting no power from the engine. I drove to O'Reilly for them to check the problem and was lucky enough that Jeff from Muff-Ex happened to come into the store when O'Reilly staff and I were discussing a tow company. Jeff asked to see the codes and said he had an idea of what was wrong and how to fix it. So, with a plan, I left my key, we exchanged phone numbers, and my sister came back from the ski hill to give me a lift. I was able to ski, pray about the situation, and wait for my husband at home or me at the hill to receive a call about the fix. By 11:30 AM, my husband received a call letting us know the problem was solved and I could pick up my key and van at O'Reilly. Luckily, I did not need a tow company. Jeff gave an out of town stranger great customer service! I do not usually write reviews but offered to this out of gratitude for the exceptional customer service I experienced. Once on the flat highway, it topped off around 40 mph and sputtered along. Being over 300 miles from home is not the place to find out you got a car problem. And there's always the risk of being hosed for big $$$ because you're not from around these parts. Well, I drove the hobbled van into Iron River and it almost died a block before making it to Northland. Service manager Greg was in the door, greeting us the moment our van pulled in, just like in the old days. The shop has about 6 bays and they service all kinds of vehicles, including RV's and trucks. I told Greg my problem. He put it on a lift and ran some computer diagnostics on the spot. Greg found my oxygen sensor was all over the place with its numbers. Problem is, he would need to order the part and have it the next day. The following morning, I found out there were still other problems keeping it from working right. He would get back to me later. Our anxiety-filled afternoon lull ended when Greg called to inform us that the van was operational and the problem was resolved. I got a new O2 sensor, fuel filter and some oxygen flow thingie that was loaded with all sorts fo debris that caused the car to lose power. A full day in the shop and 3 parts later it came out to $346, believe it or not. I was expecting over $500 had I been in Chicago. The van ran great all the way back home. Now that I may be needing brake work in the next few months, I wonder if I should come back and get it done here, since I know Greg does a great job and for a lot less than Chicago-area repair shops. Northland has good customer service. They share their office and main phone line with Nicollet Signs, which is an odd arrangement in the waiting area, but I know I can trust them. It's good to know a place in town that can take care of a problem and be honest with me. Greg is a good guy who knows what he's doing and someone I can trust to get the job done right, even if it meant staying an extra day to get it finished. Turned out to be the nicest and warmest day of our entire week's stay...

The service manager told me he would do everything he could to fix my problem despite all the mechanics being gone for the holiday. Turned out, a mechanic was willing to come in and help me. I arrived with only 10 minutes before closing. The mechanic figured out the problem quickly, fixed it and had me back on the road in 20 minutes. They were so kind they were even refusing to charge me. I of course paid them something. The mechanic even gave me his home number in case my truck acted up again and I needed help when the business was closed. This dealership is unbelievable. Although I live 200 miles away in another state, I'm seriously thinking about buying my next suburban from them. So impressed....and trust me, I'm a pretty tough judge of people!

I had remembered that O'Reilly's have an ability to connect for diagnostic codes from my husband and a previous experience, with a different vehicle, about a year after this store opened! As we were discussing a possible tow company, Austin said I was in luck as a tow company employee, he knew, had entered the store. He introduced me to him, he asked if he could see the codes, and said he had an idea of what the problem could be. He said a family member has the same van and had a similar problem. Austin said I could leave my keys at the store and return for them later if the issue was fixed or we would set up a tow. Thankfully, no tow was needed. O'Reilly's employees were helpful in making this connection and being a mutually safe point of contact for an out-of-town female traveler. Had Jeff not walked in, they would have been able to give me some tow company names, and I may have had to stay an extra day or more before the problem was corrected. I felt some relief that the staff could save me the trouble of "googling" auto repair and tow companies in an area of the Upper Peninsula that is relatively miles from "big" cities. I appreciated the small-town care extended to my car issue. The employees truly deserve recognition for this customer service! This type of customer care is not as universal as it once was, yet it is the fabric of America service that I know and expect. Sean on second shift knew about the situation and was very courteous upon my return in the afternoon. I have only positive experiences with O'Reilly and would recommend them to anyone. Since he is a former mechanic, he is very knowledgeable and he explained that the pedal is attached by two bolts and would be easy for us to replace ourselves. Since this was a Saturday, and all auto repair shops are closed, this was extremely helpful! We are from out of state and are going back home tomorrow. We were able to replace the pedal, the check engine light is now off, and the car drives perfectly. Walt is our hero!

He always forgets to do one part of the job then book a you out 3-4 weeks. This time he didn't fix my car cuz it was "too messy" and didn't bother to call me until I called after my car sat two days. The secretary is a real peach who lacks basic common communication and respect for clientele. I would never take my car back to this place. It's sad that this is the best iron river has to offer. What a way to make a Christmas happen for a family who had the money to pay and saved.
