In this case i was torturing myself wondering how to ever get out from under the weight of family responsibility. There are good things about family life I'm sure many of you will say, but if I had my choice in the matter I'd much prefer to have been grafted somehow. That seems like the only way to avoid long term association with members of a nuclear, animal family who no longer share your interests, location or recent history. Dogs do it better, seems like to me. Anyway, it may not be easy for most to understand why I find Mexican food to be such a relief at times like this. Carne asada is better than 'script drugs to kick the blues when thinking existentially in the abstract as I seem to do a lot, especially here. Tranqs, ssri or whatever they're giving you now to up your dopamine, latest fad drugs hawked by psychopharmacologists, wouldn't put a dent in the downer that comes from being in this area of texas. You'd need a dose of snow if that was your direction. Still, with a brother in the local hospital scheduled for some fairly serious carving to be done on him in a day or so, finding a new place to review in this miserable town was a real and much needed upper. That it was a never reviewed newish Mexican joint made it manna from heaven (wondering now that i mention it why no restaurant has ever made a signature dish of "manna" whatever that is or was. Somebody please do a search and let me know, i'm game for it). So this place almost didn't look open at 3 pm, only two other patrons there plus a crew of women doing whatever. the largish dining area had many empty seats, and the room isn't well lit. Two of the crew seemed beat to me, one by way of example was not even wearing shoes. Downtrodden from recent arrival here, and maybe a bit shy as their english was still a work in progress. So the menu is in one of my photos, the only copy being pinned to the wall and no others to distribute or take home, or at least none was presented to me. Simply walk up to the window in back and place your order. Up front there is a more colorful version on the wall but it's not where you place your order nor are there any serving people in the front. Today's special was "caldo de res" better known in california as "cocido" for farmworker lunches, or in some cases it might even be birria if it were dinner. Short ribs in broth with a chunk or two of carrot, cabbage, potato. I can always go for a bowl of cocido due to its elegant simplicity, which is not all that easy to replicate by the way. But then I noticed mole de pollo on the permanent list, and i asked if the mole was ground back there in the kitchen: answer, si and that was that. nothing better than to compare one homemade mole with others I have known before, how much and even what kind of bitter cocoa beans, level of chili heat, any unusual aromatic spice besides the usual cinnamon clove cumin, nuts?, how sweet, maybe citrus juice vs vinegar, etc etc. if it weren't mexican, mole could in my opinion compete with many other culinary high pedigree sauces to accompany chicken or pork, maybe even beef. but no, it's "just" mexican. a real enthusiast could probably raise the stature of mole if more focus were made on its origins which are pre-columbian. works for all kind of pottery after all. so as usual after all this there's not much i have to add about the food itself. there is this, however: for one, the price of this entree was only $9. And two, there are as usual the incomparable touches that only a sparse and get down to it restaurant run by recent folks from latin america can offer. there's an incredibly interesting speaker in the rear corner that is just such a touch. (i have an mp4 that would add multimedia to this review but so far i can't upload it.) this unusual device in itself was enough to raise my spirits if not provoke a bit of joy in its discovery, as nothing else might have done this day, and i invite you to examine the design for its utterly incomprehensible ornamentation. i got the same feeling looking at this that i get when i see a most likely latino driver demonstrating his lowrider's ability to rear up on its hind wheels as if it were some sort of mechanical equine. all in all i can only say in my own behalf as a terribly scattered and broken individual pretending to be a critical reviewer here that i suppose you might assume, having bothered to go this far writing about it, and secondly having rated it quite high on yelp's richter scale, that i think this place is very well worth your time, if not for mole then for the gorditas and if not for them then at least for the music system. But seriously it is the food, and especially so the mole if you've never had it anywhere before.

They also have a very large selection of all kinds of stuff, including hardware. There is some fresh meat back in one corner and some fresh vegetables. Beer and energy drinks are available at good prices. They have gas but we did not buy. If you need a newspaper for a bird to poop on or another reason there are machines out front selling several papers. It is a good little store, they sell some large lively worms for fish bait. There is also a grill behind the cash register where they are making food. We did not try it, but there was almost always someone calling in an order when we were there.

This "waterin' hole," as sure enough the place is named, opened only last August so it's a bit…read moreearly to gauge where to put it gastronomically, but categorically and socio-econ it's ripe for pickin' and well, yeah, that about covers the gastronomy part as well i suppose. i stop by places like this to peruse the menu which here is amusing and, of course usually in such (as well as here) cases, telling... of what I leave it to you to characterize. I have seen many menus along the way but few in which virtually every item is either "loaded," fried or somehow cheesified. looking around on the tables, i noted that many diners were having the same thing which the waitress said was something called "cowboy fries". this appeared similar to a dish enjoyed by french canadians called the poutine, a way of converting a 2,000 calorie plate of french fries into a 4,000+ calorie plate of fries by adding bits of beef or mushroom and a large dollop of rich meat gravy. this provides all the calories needed for half a day doing lumberjacking, and presumably the same goes for this dish, although the work has more to do with cows, though unlike trees in quebec there aren't many cows to punch in this area. i declined the cowboy fries but was frankly tempted by the fried bologna sandwich for old times' sake. instead i ordered a standard issue cheeseburger which came with potato choices in numerous fried forms, depending on your preference. and here is the one item worthy of mention: the handcut fries were well made and perfectly done, a tad greasy but expectedly so. The previous establishment was a kind of country breakfast place that closed after lunch, very old school country town scene. the clientele obviously was thinning faster than the hairs on their heads. This place has a bar, i believe the first in town at least in recent times, and notably there are two tv screens; coincidentally the new place's hours last into the evening a bit later on weekends, like the place closes down about 9 pm. the street lights are lit for at least another couple of hours so no fear of getting lost in the dark on the way home. as for programming, roy rogers was roundin' up the bad guys on one screen, and the other featured some likely ubiquitous vid promoting the dallas cowboys. on another note, it appears there's some sort of informal experiment going on among people who live in the area here, testing that old saw about calories in and calories out. by all appearances, so far there's nothing new in regards to that equation to report.
