FWIW-I took My Pit here after I moved to the neighborhood. Had several visits, check ups. everything was fine. a month after his last check up he became lethargic, not eating and took him in they diagnosed it as a stomach issue. Prescribed different medications and supplements. didn't help. went back and forth for a couple of months and because he didn't get better I made an appt with another vet for a 2nd opinion. They diagnosed fluid in his lungs Lymphoma after one x-ray(which they can't do at Northside) and 15 mins. read more

Had my lab/pit mix at NorthSide for had become chronic skin allergies. Northside advertises holistic modalities. No holistic measures were offered. They recommended a medicated shampoo. They also prescribed a spray for the continued outbreaks. I've had my pet into them twice. I subsequently tried to renew the prescription spray, which seemed to provide healing relief, they refused unless I brought my dog in for another office visit. I told them I needed to budget for another office visit, but would appreciate the prescription spray until then. They said sure, and then cancelled the prescription with Chewey. Beware of NorthSide Veterinary. I do not recommend them on the level of integrity or service. read more

Let me start by saying I'm incredibly happy to see this establishment has been in the neighborhood for nearly 2 decades and is still going strong. They are really a local asset, with excellent service and staff. Everyone is very patient and welcoming. I was seen on a last minute emergency visit so I expected to be waiting a bit, I became relieved to see my dog get better day by day after receiving the necessary medicine. I think the doctor was incredibly knowledgeable and professional, and did an excellent job explaining everything to me, I would definitely recommend him to anyone and intend on returning for further care as necessary. read more

After Dr. Eisner (unsuccessfully) tried to upsell me on expensive therapies for my senior dog (he didn't require any), she did recommend a very pricey heart murmur test. I have yet to hear her or anyone call to explain the results. They also seem to double/triple book appointments so there are always long wait times with little explanation - even for lab visits. I write this review having had phenomenal experiences with this clinic. Desiring to come back, I wanted to check the reviews to see whether my last experience was a one off situation or something this clinic is notorious for. I'm sad that I am so validated in my experience. The good, I love the holistic practices of this vet. My first time at the clinic I was with Dr. Stacey Leiman and she had the utmost patience. She answered my questions and met me where I was at and took into consideration the relationship me and my dog have. The bad, Dr. Barbara Eisner. Dr. Eisner recommended me the cranial sacral therapy my dog needed at our annual appointment. I was informed the prescription lasted for a year. I was unable to make the appointment for cranial sacral until approx. 9months after the original prescription. Upon arrival, she attempted to bully and fear-monger me into getting my annuals right now. She did not respect my no, proceeded to shame me into it by telling me I'm an irresponsible pet parent. Begrudgingly, she gave my dog cranial sacral all while complaining incessantly how she shouldn't even be touching my dog because she doesn't know what's wrong with him. Simultaneously, refusing too look at his file because I wouldn't get my annuals done immediately. She consistently tried to push the narrative it was a legal matter and when I proceeded to explain that I was well within the legal obligation, she would cut me off and silence me, telling me she didn't want to here because she wasn't allowed to hear anything because I didn't have the appropriate appointment. After the appointment she yelled at the front desk that she was no longer doing cranial sacrals unless she had seen the dog within 6 months. While my dog needed the cranial sacral, I should have never let this human touch him with the way she proceeded that day. She was rude, completely disrespectful and I was like I'll never come back here. I truly tried to give her the benefit of the doubt because the patient before me had just been outted for trying to scam the vet and was delinquent on there bill and broke the front door in a tantrum on the way out. I figured yeah, I'd be a little triggered too if I was in Dr. Eisners shoes. But the way she hammered into me, refused to listen to me about my dog, and then tried to shame and fear-monger me into services. Again I love this vet, and I don't doubt Dr. Eisner is brilliant. The first time I met them I really enjoyed the experience, but the second was so bad I'm stressed out about even getting my records from these people. And a preemptive no, to whomever is responding to these reviews, I don't want to talk it out with Dr. Eisner to see if we can come to some amicable agreement. I don't trust her. read more

As I write this review with literally tears in my eyes, I am so thankful to EVERYONE! The first person we encountered was Charles on the phone. He is true definition of GREAT customer service! We were new to the practice and had one visit with Dr. Leiman and one with Dr. Eisner. Let's put it this way: We had a great experience with Dr. Leiman, who asked all the right questions, was easy to talk to, called to follow up, and was obviously committed. We would recommend Dr. Leiman to anyone. Averaging the number of stars each visit would get, we come to 3 stars; but Dr. Leiman would get 5 stars (so, you can do the math on how our other visit went). I've been a patient here for many years and recently decided to leave. There's lots of neighborhood options now. 1. They always make you wait a long time. Appointments are basically meaningless. 2. Most of the vets are good except for Barbara Eisner. She's combative and gave poor treatment advice. At one point she just randomly yelled "BITE RISK" and "WE NEED A MUZZLE" and muzzled my dog. It was a huge overreaction to his scared behavior (he's never been close to biting anyone or dog). read more

I've been taking my cats here for the last 10 years and the service has always been A+! All the vets are professional, caring, and have guided me and my feline friends to better health! Post-visit communication could be improved, but I usually have all my questions answered when I come back in person. Two stars purely due to having solid doctors who appear to know what they're talking about, (better I think than the ones at Williamsburg Veternary clinic) but it stops there. Doctor quality has always been a top priority for me so I thought I could put up with the incompetence of the associated office staff and the associated frustrations this results in, but I was wrong. From ignored calls from my pharmacies and ignored communications from my insurance company, to having to call multiple times to get someone to properly provide medical records to me, no response about my pup's eye injury, and ignored emails about my pup's allergies (the doctor apparently has email struggles too) this one was too much to handle and starting to interfere in the quality of my pup's care. Highly recommend going elsewhere, which is a shame because the doctors are solid and the prices average. I learned that having a competent office staff is important for your pup's care quality and undervalued. read more

Rude beyond comprehension, the worst bedside manor possible and overall poor quality care. Dr. Leiman should understand he is dealing with a sick animal and a concerned human / pet parent. I would never step foot in that place again, under any circumstances and feel v sorry for anyone that has to endure what me and my beloved dog went through. They lost their primary concern for helping animals and run this establishment strictly as a business & poorly at that. Customer service has definitely improved! The techs and doctor treat my very nervous/biting dog very well and not at all like a nuisance.

This place was recommended to me for senior dog care and they explicitly say it is one of their services. I know my 12YO large breed dog (who I have loved more than any other animal in my life) is sick and I was looking for peace of mind about caring for her in her final months(?). I made this explicit when I made and confirmed the appointment. Before we got into a room, I had a flyer about appropriate pet food offered by front desk staff, which I felt like was a little insensitive given the end-of-life context but I was willing to forgive while I waited for the dr. Instead of listening to my concerns about her behavior changes, Dr. Eisner offered craniosacral therapy for her arthritis, which might have been cool to do for my dog a few years ago, but misses the point of end of life care. My dog was scared throughout the appointment and the staff told me not to cry when I got upset. If you have insurance and like being told what to do by doctors who don't listen to your actual concerns, go here. read more

Super disappointed with the care and customer service here. My 4 year old golden retriever has been a patient for over a year now and has been misdiagnosed, I've received terrible communication from the Doctor and staff, and the receptionist is incredibly rude. You aren't assigned to one vet in particular, you have to rotate through the group based on availability, so there is no relationship or opportunity for the doctor to get to know your pet. I with Dr. Ramos (who was lovely in person) a few times trying to ask a follow up question about my dog's meals as they related to a thyroid medicine he was given and the Doctor could not understand the simple question I was asking after me rephrasing it two times. She kept responding with something totally unrelated. They also never gave me any information about when to follow up after being put on this medicine. The last straw was calling for an emergency appointment due to a recent injury that was bloody and turning into a hot spot. The soonest appointment they were offering my was 1 week out and when I expressed how upset I've been with the practice, the receptionist rudely told me that if I called around other vets, everyone is 1 month out for appointments and then hung up on me.... Don't choose this vet for proximity like I did, I would stay far away. read more

This family veterinary practice is incredibly kind. Dr Leiman (the OG) helped us through the decline of our elder cat. And now he and the newest Dr Leiman are taking great care of our new puppy. The doctors are thoughtful and take time to answer questions. When my pets have been sick, the doctors have been there--emailing late and calling me on their day off. The vet techs are the sweetest, even when our cat scratched them up (sorry!). I'm sure they aren't the cheapest option out there. But they are interested in knowing and treating your pet for the long haul. read more

This was my first visit and I'm so glad it worked out the way it did. My rescue cat of four months had to have all her teeth extracted on Tuesday at the Animal Medical Center and I brought her home on Wednesday with a fentanyl patch on her leg that I was told I could carefully remove today. I was also told it could be "difficult" to remove. I truly did not feel comfortable removing the patch on my own as it's hard to hold this cat, much less cut or peel something off of her fur (!)--especially after she's so extra fearful having just had a massive procedure done. I was able to make a same day appointment with Northside Veterinary Clinic if I was willing to wait up to an hour. I happily took the appointment and waited about 45 minutes to be seen--the staff took my cat into the air conditioned office so she wouldn't overheat while I waited outside. Dr. Leiman was so kind and not only took the pain patch off of my cat but also checked on how her gums were healing. He knew the doctor who had operated on my cat at AMC by name and I just had a good feeling about him. I'm excited to make this veterinarian office my cat's primary care provider. I brought my 10 yr old Great Dane, Hercules, in for an emergency visit when he collapsed. The team was amazing and helped me immediately and correctly identified the pneumonia and sent me to AMC where they knew I was coming and were ready for me thanks to Dr Leiman's call. He's been home for 3 days now, has regained his energy and appetite and is able to walk fine. The team let us crash through the doors without an appointment and took care of us right away when my normal vet would not see him until later. I would have had no idea what to do without the care provided. read more

Do NOT go here. All the negative reviews are true. I have been to this clinic many many times over the years (my dog is senior) and they constantly misdiagnose, overcharge, have terrible communication, make you wait outside for 45 minutes (they are ALWAYS late) and don't even allow you in the room with your dog - you have to wait OUTSIDE. They blame it on Covid but come on, at this point every vet, doctor and clinic have figured out how to manage around Covid restrictions. The front desk ignores you if you go to the door. The techs seem stressed and unhappy and give no time to talk Also, the doctors are mean, short tempered and seem irritated if you ask too many questions. They make you pick up your medication (nope, no Chewy or .com prescriptions) and overcharge. It's a racket and a shame to do this to vulnerable pet owners who are there often times in distress. I actually worried that writing a negative review would make them retaliate. In addition, you will see that they tend to respond to negative reviews very rudely and defensively ( I am sure they will do so here) which just goes to show terrible their custom service is. Dr Lehman has 0 bedside manor when delivering bad news. They also kept my dog with a heart condition for 5 hours in a kennel and then told us she was visible upset and shaking the whole time. Despite having an appointment for a heart test. How can you treat an animal like that with a heart condition? They will also fill your prescription for 2x the cost of what it is on chewy. Save yourself some grief and go anywhere else but here. They will no longer get our business. read more

I put my dog down here about a year ago due to his old age and illnesses. The staff had 0 compassion for the death of my dog. They didn't even give me a minute to grieve and asked for my card information while I was crying (the minute my dog was put down). Also I had asked the girl if she could change my option, I had asked to have my dog cremated and his remains spread in a cemetery. But I called back the next day and asked if I could have that changed to keep his ashes. She had said she would ask and the next day called me and said there was a mix up so I would be actually able to get the ashes. When I went to go pick up the ashes, it turned out she made a mistake and instead gave me his paw print and SEEDS instead of his ashes. It was so unprofessional. My partner came home having had a very frustrating experience at Northside. We were worried about our cat due to some scabbing on his face, and the vet was anything but kind and understanding. She did not introduce herself to my partner, was curt, and didn't take the time to answer my partner's questions. Updated: Sept. 2010 I stopped going to Northside Veterinary Clinic in July 2009 after one of the male vet/vet technicians suggested that I use Previcox, a pain medication which has caused deaths in many animals. See this website: http://www.k911.biz/Petsafety/DeathByPrevicox_RowdysLastVacation.htm I did not ask the vet about Previcox side effects at the time because I was concerned about my little 3 lb Chi for her swelling of her eyes. I was given ointments for her eyes in addition to another prescription for pain (which I did not fill) and the Previcox which was filled at the vet. (yes, two pain medications). I only thought of asking about the side effects of the pills after I gave my 3 lb Chihuahua a quarter of the Previcox pill as prescribed by the vet. If these pills were for me, I would definitely look up the side effects for myself. Although I only gave her a quarter of the pill, according to the Merial website (the manufacturers of the Previcox pill), the prescribed dosage that the vet/vet tech (Please note: NOT Dr. Esiner or Dr. Dr. Leiman, both who were very good to me) gave me was twice as much as recommended for her size: 14 mg for a 3 lb Chihuahua! I did not give her any more Previcox since it was prescribed as a "pain medication" and I monitored her to make sure she wasn't vomiting, being lethargic, change in appetite/drinking habits, etc.. My little girl got better and I'm glad I avoiding poisoning her with Previcox! I'm surprised at Northside for prescribing this particular pill as they are advertised as "holistic" vet care. I've taken her to three other vets in Brooklyn and the only other vet care that I've truly been satisfied was during emergency care at VERG. Review in 2008-2009: Good: attentive, holistic, one of the few if not only places in NYC that offers acupuncture for your animal I took my 3lb Chihuahua in to get spayed on Mon. morning. I was pretty nervous about getting her spayed. They did all the blood work to make sure that she is healthy enough to get spayed. I opted not to go to the ASPCA for a $75 spay because she is so tiny. Through the blood work they found that my little girl wasn't absorbing the protein that she is suppose to be absorbing, which relates to her picky eating. I've tried so many pet foods and diets, so hopefully we'll find the right foods for her this time! I actually had Dr. Eisner and she was very kind to me the minute I walked in and called me several times today to speak to me about my little girl's blood work. We got cut off several times since she was on a trip, but she called me back later this evening and left me a very detailed message about what can be changed about her diet. The bad: it's expensive (good thing I have ASPCA insurance) and the wait room was crowded since it is a small clinic. read more

I've been to many vets all over the city (and in other cities) and Northside is by far the best I've encountered, especially if your pet has any serious health problems. They're not currently my regular vet, since I'm not in the neighborhood anymore. But they're my go-to if anything serious comes up. Twice now friends have called me for advice when their cats have had health problems and their vets were unable to help. I've referred them to Northside, and in both cases the cat's problem was solved just by a change in nutrition. Which brings me to how I found them in the first place. I had a diabetic cat, who had been eating what both my previous vets recommended. I tried Northside based on a tip. They changed my cat's diet and he actually went into remission from insulin. The he was insulin-free for the next ten years. The vets here study the peer-reviewed research on pet nutrition, which sadly is rare among vets (who mostly just get informed by industry-sponsored lectures at veterinary schools). When I had a cat with cancer, I went crazy staying up at night reading journal articles on experimental treatments. To my amazement, the vets were familiar with all of them, even the most obscure. I'd read about a small-scale informal experiment done on humans with mouth cancer, that involved large doses of vitamin-A. The vet said, "yes, that can worth a try on dogs, but not on cats--their livers can't handle it." I was impressed. The negative reviews here are surprising. I suspect it might be because bedside manner really isn't their strong suit. They have broad and deep expertise, and are extraordinarily competent. But they're not really into small talk or holding your hand or going goo-goo gah-gah at your kitten. I recommend them highly if 1) you have a new pet and would like the best nutritional advice you'll get anywhere, or 2) your pet has a serious health problem and you want a 2nd opinion, or maybe your regular vet isn't getting anywhere, or 3) you live in the neighborhood, and are more interested in expert care than in an emotional support vet. read more

I've taken my cat to a few different vets in Brooklyn/Queens, but I've decided Northside will be her regular clinic. Everyone from the front office staff to the techs and the two different vets I've seen have been wonderful. They are very sweet to my kitty, and they make her feel comfortable in an otherwise miserable situation. More importantly, they really go above and beyond with my kitty's healthcare. They always ask me before going ahead with a pricey test or shot, which is SO much better than a surprise bill. I visited the office yesterday and the vet actually called this morning to check on my cat. I love Northside Vet and will continue to take my kitty to this excellent clinic! We are so incredibly grateful for Dr. Leiman and the unbelievable level of love and interest that he obviously has in the animals he cares for. We have a small (14 lb) rescue dog who suffers from severe anxiety around strangers, and especially at the vet. Dr. Leiman is always so patient and soothing, and the poor man ends up spending at least an hour with our dog whenever he has a check-up, and he never makes us feel anything less than welcome and cared for. I've taken my pupper to Northside for the past two years with a couple dozen appointments so far. Current rating is well earned - quality of care is high but the clinic is spectacularly disorganized with little followup. All paper front office that is oversubscribed. The patients receive strong treatment once inside an exam room, but logistics for anything ongoing is more difficult that it needs to be. Most recently engaged them for ~$400 over two appointments to prepare my dog for a trip to the UK. We were ultimately denied at the airport counter as the clinic missed a critical piece of documentation with the City of London. Ended up costing a full weekend of vacation to sort out - when I visited the clinic to discuss I waited 45 minutes and still couldn't talk to a veterinarian about the error. Everything that happens in the examination room is high quality. Everything that happens outside of it is a complete mess. Now that more options are available in the neighborhood (with more reasonable pricing no less), I'll be taking little Ada elsewhere. read more

We have a dog aggressive dog, we checked in at the front desk saying we would wait in our car until they were ready for our appointment. They said, ok, we'll get you in a few minutes when we're ready. 40 min go by it is 90 degrees outside and we are sitting in our car, no one is coming to get us. We call them from our car, and they say it will be a few more minutes. We leave, tired of waiting. They call back to say we were calling your dog's name in the waiting room but we didn't know you were in your car?! It reminded me of the Chinese restaurant episode of Seinfeld. We won't be back. The BEST place to take your animal for care. Period. I have been taking my 17 year old dog there since she was 5 years old, and I know without their knowledge and care at Northside, I would have lost her 3 years ago. In my experience, the entire staff is 100%. They are extremely knowledgable, take their time to listen and treat properly, and most importantly, they CARE. This is a review that I probably should have written years ago, but I don't normally write reviews. I have had such incredible experiences over the years with them, and I know my senior dog is thriving because of the treatment she has received under their care. Just this morning, I called to ask questions about my dog and advice on what to do, and Kayla answered the phone, was extremely friendly, kind and knowledgeable as I explained everything going on. It was like talking to a friend. I took her advice and my little buddy is already back to bounding around happily in the grass. Thank you, Kayla, and all the staff and doctors at Northside. We trust this vet wholeheartedly. Our dog sees Dr. Eisner and she truly loves animals. The office is a little old school, but the treatment is great. They are not quick to prescribe expensive medicine, unless it is needed, and often provide natural treatments for our old dog. Our dog has had a stroke and infection over the past year. Dr. Eisner called to follow up with us after-hours following both incidents. Last week Dr Eisner called us at 9:00pm to check on our dog and really discuss her lab results and the office followed up again two days later. If they have to run tests, the turn around is quick. The vet technicians are very friendly and really care about the animals. Our dog had a urinary tract infection and kept peeing all over the office, and the staff was so understanding and cleaned it up each time. I see comments that the vets can be a bit cold and this crossed my mind the first time I went (eight years ago), but then I asked myself, 'does the vet love animals? Does the vet love my dog?' My answer was a resounding yes. My analogy is that I go to my primary care physician for human care; I go to my Vet for pet care. :D read more

The care our cats received was largely okay, but I would avoid this clinic if you have an anxious pet. They seemed utterly incapable of managing our cats and sedated them every time. It wasn't until we moved and got a new vet that we realized it was unnecessary. They also were not empathetic about the challenges of pets who are nervous at the vet, badmouthing our pets for it and rolling their eyes when we said they were sweet at home. It left a really bad taste in my mouth and I hate to think of how many times the poor little guys were shot up with tranquilizers for nothing. I get the sense they are fine for easy animals, but if your pets are scared of the vet or generally anxious, look somewhere else for more empathetic care. read more

Dr. Leiman and his staff were very caring and showed much attention and care with the work they do there.
