But sometimes I find myself having to get poked or prodded, for instance, this trip to LabCorp for blood work. And while it's not something I want to put on my calendar every day, I have to say this experience was about 1,000x better than it might have been, so woohoo for that. First, I love that you can just make an appointment online -- super, super easy. I actually got on the computer at 10 and made an appointment for 1 p.m. same day. Second, if you're in West Seattle (or close by) it's really easy to get to. There's parking on the street and inside, and it's a small place in a quiet neighborhood, so much less hassle than trekking to First Hill if you don't have to. Third, I walked right in and was next; no waiting. In fact, I learned when I got there that I didn't even need an appointment -- apparently it's not a long-lines-of-people kind of thing to get blood drawn, so that was good to know just in case. (I am a nervous type and like making appointments.) The surroundings were honestly just so-so; there's a main lobby that's nice, but I was in the lab lobby, which feels more like a waiting nook at an old hospital, but it's fine. The room where the blood was drawn was a little small, and another guy came in to have his done while we were wrapping up my procedure, and that was just a little weird -- I am by far not the worst person about having to give blood, but I don't particularly want to watch someone else's pool up into a vial or bag, either. But the best part was Kristy who checked me in and drew my blood. She was funny, chatty, supportive ("You can grab my arm if you need to,") and kept me laughing as we talked about terrible self-published ebooks. Most importantly, she got that needle in so easily I honestly barely even felt it -- I actually had to check to see if she'd gotten started. And it was over quickly. I let her know that I have a tendency to faint and needed to lie back. She put me in their version of a lounge chair. She even aimed a little fan at me and gave me a cold pack to put on my chest. Her blood draw was smooth and hardly hurt at all. She was excellent. I wish I remembered her name but it started with a T and she wore red scrubs. It was one of my best blood draw experiences! When I arrived there were a handful of people there, a few walk-ins (I heard them talking). Labcorp staff were moving folks through - fast, friendly, professional. It's very clear that LabCorp is facing staffing issues when it comes to this location. The customer service was very poor and the staff were not all that professional. Initially, I was told that they do walk-in drug screens but then told I would have to come back the next day. That was absolutely insane! I insisted that they see me for my drug screen and then the manager told me I could be seen that same day. Why tell someone and have signage that says you take walk-ins for drug screens but yet turn them around for the next day? I was there several hours before closing as well! I was able to get it done, but with some major insistence, and talking to the manager. It was a very cramped space, and with very burnt out and unprofessional staff. Overall, I got done what I needed, but did not have a good experience. I highly recommend avoiding this location at all costs if you can! I prefer the location in burien for my routine labwork. Unfortunately, they don't do pre-employment drug screens. BEWARE!

Once we did, we still never saw a price as none was given on our submission form. My card was then charged $1,410 by them for 10 mold samples. These were only $40 each from other labs that we had used previously. I called and they said they didn't realize we weren't walk-ins so our rate should be around $46/ sample and they would make it right. They offered me a credit of $60 out of my $1,400 to make it right for the lack of transparency and us never seeing or agreeing to the exorbitant pricing. Do not use this company if you value your money and by all means do not give them your credit card number. They will wring out every penny they can from you and offer you a 5% credit to pretend like they tried to help when you point out that there was never anything signed agreeing to their secret prices.

They do take walk-ins, but there's no front desk (just a self check-in kiosk), so I'm not entirely sure how smooth that process is. I'd definitely recommend booking ahead. Once you arrive, you check yourself in at the kiosk and they verify your ID, so make sure to bring it. I was called in pretty quickly, they did a quick check of my info (since I had already filled everything online), and the blood draw itself was quick and smooth. Overall, I was in and out in about 15 minutes. Very convenient experience.

After which she started a new lecture on how I wasn't letting her talk. My issue was I didn't use the services as I cancelled my appointment and asked for a refund. (NO WAY! I was told I'd signed up for a membership.) I told her I believed I had signed up for services and not a membership but was willing to listen to the recorded call when I'd originally moved forward w payment. This was not acceptable as their policy was not to give a refund after charging one month prior. Instead of a refund, I would pay $197 to not have to deal with Life Wise customer support again. The nurses are actually very good. However, they sold me an add-on for $99 that basically resulted in recommendations instead of data. They hold their annual screening sessions in various different public venues every year. This year, I went to Unity Church in Bellevue to do only the 4 tests promoted in this year's mailer for $149. They also have other tests that they will try to upsell you to, but they usually don't overdo this. The mailers give you a promo code and a phone number to call (or www.lifelinescreening.com) to set up your appointment. They also tell you when you last had certain tests and whether or not you need to have them done again this year. Their tests also include finger pricks to take blood samples, but mostly ultrasounds to test for "silent killers", blood clots, etc. Their mission is to do the kind of tests that Medicare or your health insurance will only cover once you show symptoms. By that time, it could be too late, if the first symptom is a stroke or a heart attack! GREEN = "GO", RED = "STOP", BUT YELLOW DOES NOT MEAN "GO VERY FAST." To have those same tests done at your doctor's office would cost a bit more. This is why LLS focuses only on preventative tests that could uncover potential silent killers. Only bummer is that they do not take insurance. They send you the ultrasound test results in 3 weeks, prepared in a professional pleasingly graphic format that can be easily understood by you and your doctor. Their graphic results show green if you have "no blockage"(OK), yellow if you are in the "mild blockage" (MEH) zone, and red if you are in the "severe blockage" (OMG!) zone. Oh, they will be sure to bring it to your immediate attention if you ever hit the red zone on any of their tests. INSTANT FINGERSTICK RESULTS GOT STUCK ON HOLD? Fingerstick test results have always been given to me right away in the past. But for some reason I did not get them this year. Whether they forgot, or changed their policy re: fingerstick test results, I don't know yet. Perhaps a future update will reveal this. Like the ultrasound test results, Fingerstick test results (mailed 3 weeks later) are also printed out in the green "good to go", yellow "prepare to stop" and red "STOP!" format. But instant results are simply printed out on a small piece of paper showing your results as compared on a line graph to the health standard that one should meet, but without the "traffic light effects."

They do tend to prescribe medication more often here than other places, but when I've expressed concern with a specific Rx I had issues with, they were quick to find an alternative. The biggest reason I love this place is the time it takes. I'm usually out the door in less than 15 minutes (with an appointment). That includes greeting reception, getting vitals from an assistant, answering questions about why I'm there, talking to the doc, and leaving with my visit summary. I don't come here when I'm feeling well - I want to be back home, wrapped in a blanket, hopefully with some antibiotics or medication to make my plague less miserable. More than any other place I've been, this checks that box. If you're looking for a conversation about how your family is doing, make an appointment with your PCP.
