I love that this place is both a seafood market and a restaurant. They have a wide variety of raw seafood for purchase as well as a big menu of cooked items. I went with the lobster bisque and some hush puppies and both were pretty tasty! The soup was not quite as thick and creamy as I like my lobster bisque to be, but it was loaded with chunks of lobster and was tasty. The hush puppies were perfectly crispy outside and soft inside and hit the spot! The inside of the store is nice and has minimal seating, but there is also some seating outside as well. It was a Saturday at lunchtime, and I was looking for something different for lunch in the Thornebrooke area. Tooling around a little bit, I found Northwest Seafood at the tail end of the Fresh Market stripmall, and figured it might be interesting. It was busy, but it wasn't pretentious, which is what I was looking for. A couple of tables setup outside for customers, and inside a bench or two for those waiting for their food. The place serves in two different ways... first, they are a fish market, and you can get a large variety of different seafoods there. Prices aren't bad, certainly better than other shops in the same area, and a lot more variety as well. Inside, I went through the menu that they have. They are a counter service as well as the fish market, and you can get a number of different items cooked up right there to eat. I went for a cod sandwich and fries, which was the closest thing they had to fish and chips. The wait was nominal, as they had to fry up the food and get the fries together. Staff were pleasant, despite the apparent rush, and I got my food in short order. Eating it was a good time. The sandwich was excellent. The fries... they were good initially, but they don't really hold up over time. Not a big deal if you are sitting there and eating them immediately, though. Decent food when it's made right. The chef at the tioga location is WAYYYY better, The salmon used for lunch specials isn't wild caught, but the bourbon glaze is pretty amazing. Customer service certainly lacks, and they act like you don't exist sometimes as you wait in line, it's kind of weird. The smoked fish spreads are incredible, including the smoked salmon they offer. We realize that there was one closer to us on 43rd street as there are 2 locations, the other 1 being in town of tioga. Got there 5 minutes early as I wasn't sure the location. Set when I got there of course. My order wasn't ready. It was supposed to be ready at 6 o'clock. Wasn't ready for another 15 minutes. That's the only reason I gave them 4 stars instead of 5. For some reason I often forget this place has delicious seafood in town whenever I'm craving it. Most likely because it's a seafood market with a walk up counter for placing prepared meal orders with a couple of counters and outdoor tables for quick dining. Even though it's primarily a market, this place knows how to cook some great food! Their options are super fresh and favorable. I walked into a building and it smelled great. A guy told me he had bought lunch from this place so I gave it a try. I thought this was solely a fish market. I tried the special for the day and it was amazing. The grilled shrimp was perfect. The plantains were perfect because I love sweet bananas with a charred surface. Definitely worth the price. There were others being engaged and I stood in line approx 10-15 min w/o being addressed. I would make it my business when I lived in Tampa to stop by and load up until my next visit. Fantastic seafood market! Excellent selection of a wide variety of seafood. The shop did not stink of old fish, so I was not surprised by the freshness of the fish I purchased. I only bought a pound of grouper, and a half pound of shrimp. As I had never cooked grouper before I asked for preparation tips. The young men behind the counter gave excellent advice. I ended up picking out some breading by Slap Ya Mama for frying the seafood. They were all excellent choices, and I will certainly return for more! read more

I've never eaten any of their prepared meals, but I have bought king salmon from them before to make my own sushi and it was amazing!!!!!! They sell the best high quality salmon for sushi in all of Gainesville. The service is great as they have tons of staff working at once. The ambiance is pretty average since it pretty much looks like every other seafood market. Food alert !! Just had the blackened salmon lunch with yellow rice and vegetable medley from Northwest Seafood millhopper. It was absolutely on point! The salmon was moist and flakey and perfectly seasoned. The rice was well seasoned and perfectly cooked. The only down side was the vegetable medley was bland but once salt and pepper were added still very good. Quantity of the meal looked underwhelming at first glance but after I finished it I was very full. Perfect lunch portions. If you have a chance check them out! Beautiful fresh seafood displayed from bones to make stock to amazing fresh seafood available for you to take home and prepare or have it steamed or fried there with sides available. They have a few seats inside to dine and a few outside to dine as well. We chose to dine at home. It took us a while to be served which I didn't like but eventually someone helped us. There was a 45 minute wait to have the food steamed so we went and ran some other errands and came back an hour late and still hadn't received a call until we were parking. The shrimp were steamed perfectly. The fried plantains were great. Some were a little too bitter but the good ones were delicious. The humongous lobster tail was the best thing I've eaten the entire trip. It was so tender and delicious. I've found a new love for lobster cooked right. They offer samples of dips in the store. They also offer sample cups of the two soups of the day. They had a Scallop and Gnocchi Bisque that I decided to try on the way out the door and had to turn around and go right back in there and buy a cup it was delicious as hell. After reading all the fantastic reviews I thought I'd try this place.....I ordered a grouper sandwich to go. The man brought it curbside and put in the backseat. When I got back to my hotel I looked at this tiny piece of grouper, an average grocery store bun, and fries. But no utensils, ketchup, Mayo, tartar sauce or napkins. Maybe that's okay for 7.99 but it was $17.99! I drive past a Miller's Ale House. I'll try that tomorrow. Maybe it was just a fluke. But with tax it was a very lousy $20 dinner. read more

So I drove 20 miles for this restaurant. For $18+tax, the combo meal is small - unbelievably small. The food was just ok and they didn't give me any condiments or utensils or point them out. I purchased three plates, the cod tacos were pretty good and the price was fair, the grouper - borderline too small, lettuce wilted, half of a slice of tomato. I tried both locations with the same disappointing serving on the combo, pick two, and pick three. I won't be back for their cooked food. If you go, stick with the tacos or meals under $10, they are more hearty than the $20 meals. My salmon strip was about a quarter dimension in length???? They had a very limited supply of seafood when I was there last week. I realize they're in the middle of the state but it's only an hour from the coast. Groomers is based out of San Antonio which is 140 miles from the coast and it destroys this place. Nice to go food service and it has a ton of locals waiting in line. The grouper was fresh and tasty. Peeled raw shrimp were desiccated and they only had 2#, which was fine in the end. Nice selection of dry goods. read more

Grouper overcooked with hot coleslaw, what the heck? I'm tired of paying for food that is packaged with such disregard for the customer. Coleslaw needs to be cold, it is quickly warmed when put on top of hot fish and fries. Today the coleslaw was warm again! Plus, the grilled grouper was so overcooked, it was tasteless and crumbly. If you are looking for a bushel of oysters, or just want to know what the best fresh and local catch is, they will definitely have it. The location is very convenient for those living around the Thornbrook area, plus they are located in a shopping center with a specialty bakery and grocery store. Fresh seafood in central FL? And it's yummy!!! If I can't go to the ocean to get my fish then this is my place. So many different varieties depending on what is coming in that week. It's not just the filets you can find here but in the freezer are all sorts of goodies. Frog legs, conch and oh so many more. Some time ago I even purchased a bag of stone ground yellow grits from GA. It is taking me so long to finish that bag. What goes better w/fish than grits? Prices are decent and the guys are friendly. Northwest Seafood has always been my go-to spot for fresh seafood, and they are the best in town for all of your seafood grocery needs. They have been serving prepared foods for a little while now, and last week I finally got to try some. I had their Chef's Special, which consisted of butterfly fried shrimp, hush puppies, Cole slaw, and french fries. While everything was delicious, I think those french fries might have been the best I have ever had! They were crispy, well-seasoned, and hot! Not only do they have an amazing selection of fresh seafood but they will fry up (or grill, or steam) anything in the case for you to eat right there on the spot! I stopped in for lunch the other day and I got the fried tilapia, which to my surprise came with fries, hush puppies and coleslaw for around $12. The fish was amazing - big pieces of tilapia that were lightly fried on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. It was so delicious and fresh - some of the best fish and chips I've ever had! The hush puppies were awesome, too. Plus, it was enough food for me to enjoy again for lunch the next day. If you want to eat here, they have outdoor seating only. I took my food to-go, since my office is just a few blocks away. I was super impressed with the selection of fish. The people in front of me bought a whole 6-pound grouper! Everything in the case looked very fresh. The prices seemed a bit higher than you would pay at the supermarket but if you want it to be fresh - this is the way to go! I ordered the Captain's Platter from the picture which showed a good size piece of cod, BIG shrimp, and good size scallops. Well the cod consisted of 2-3 pieces the size of my thumb. The shrimp was just that tiny shrimp about 5 and the scallops were the size of a marble around 5 again. REALLY?!? For $20.00 bucks I expected better. NEVER AGAIN! The market itself is first rate which is why I thought I'd order a pre-made meal for the first time. I mean it's a great seafood market, but a very poor take home meal. SAD. read more
