    broiled grouper
    Simone M.

Cedar River is a local favorite and has been around for over 40 years! I did grow up eating here as a kid and since moving back this was my first time having it in a long time. Cedar River is known for its seafood dishes, in addition to some classic Southern staples like collard greens, cornbread, grits, and Catfish. I did an order for pick up over the phone which was pretty easy and simple. I ordered the Trio which comes with 2 sides and hush puppies. My picks were the fried gator tail, broiled Grouper, and deviled crab. For my sides, I went with the stewed okra and tomatoes and green beans. The portion sizes were pretty good for the price of the dinner as well. I'll start with the good - the fried gator tail bites were fried perfectly and the gator wasn't chewy or rubbery at all. The grouper was seasoned very well and did not have a fishy taste at all. I would've easily paired it with some cheesy grits and been satisfied. Their hush puppies are a favorite amongst locals and were so good. These fritters were very fresh and fluffy on the inside. The star of my plate was the stewed okra and tomatoes with yellow rice. The yellow rice was surprisingly cooked perfectly - no hard pieces at all. The stewed okra and tomatoes was seasoned so good and reminded me of my granny's cooking. Very Southern and comforting. Ok so for the bad - the green beans were bland....very bland and a bit oily. I had to pour out some of the juice and add some of the salt and pepper to even make it taste like anything. The very bad on the plate was the deviled crab. Throw it the whole recipe away. It was so mushy and not an ounce of crab in it at all. I even popped it in the airfryer to see if the filling would cook but nope. It was a disgusting inedible mess. If I want a deviled crab or have a craving for it - I'll take a trip to Tampa. Overall, there were some good and bad parts of my meal but the good did outshine the bad menu items during my experience.

Jennifer our server was awesome. Prices were fair. Quantities huge. Good was fresh. Restaurant was clean. Couldn't ask for more!

I was seated and nobody waited on me for 10 minutes. They even had sat two other tables next to me within this time. They took their drink orders and these two tables arrived after I came in. The server finally came over and I placed my drink and food order, as I was ready because I've been sitting there so long. I actually knew right away what I wanted which was fried shrimp. It took another 10 minutes to get my water. She put three lemons in my water, and I never order lemons at restaurants because they are known not to be very clean. Meanwhile, they gave the other tables their drinks first. After the server brought my food, she never came back to check on me. I wanted some butter for my grits, but she didn't check on anything. She made sure she checked on the other tables next to me. Later, she brought the check, and I noticed it had a service fee on it (3.9%). Really?! Stop playin'. I inquired what that was and she said if you pay with a card they charge that fee. They assumed I was going to pay with a card and it had no cash option listed. I deducted the fee and provided cash for the meal and ended up still tipping 29% when she was in a terrible server. When she came back to get the check with my cash, she asked if I needed change back. I wish servers would stop asking this and just bring the change back and obviously if the customer is gone, the money is meant for them, or if they want to leave some cash, they will. The intention was to give all of the change to her, but it is in poor taste to ask people this. At this point I just wanted to get out of there because I did not feel very welcomed. I came in this restaurant once before, and nobody would seat me, and I walked out, but a coworker ordered food from here yesterday, and I figured I would give them another chance. Then the server took my receipt and crumbled it up and put it in her pocket. So now I have no record that I had even eaten there except for the plate of food that I ordered (see photo). I should've taken a picture of it. This seems a little shady to me. Additionally, I don't appreciate having a service fee without being advised of it before my check is brought to me, or actually before I even order. I won't go back here. I ordered fried shrimp, cheese, grits, and lima beans. The meal was $9.50 pre-tax. The service is terrible. There were other servers walking by my table when I was sitting there ignored when I was first seated. Who wants to sit in a restaurant with nothing to drink for 20 minutes? I really was thinking of getting up and walking out since nobody could even come and greet me and take a drink order. The food is subpar as well. I'll pass on this place, for the lack of customer service.

I've heard a lot about this Gainesville favorite and finally made my way towards the NW side of town. From the recommendations I've received, this is the best seafood place in town. I must say, I can see why this is a local favorite. Once I walked it, I was greeted and shown to an available booth. Myself and another church friend chose to dine for lunch. Once we arrived it wasn't crowded, but then family groups came in. Our waiter was Ashley and she served us pretty well. I chose the Flounder lunch deal and she chose a shrimp platter and salad. Both entrees were cooked to perfection! We ordered corn nuggets for the appetizer and they were battered perfectly. I'd give this local delight a 10/10, I will visit again.

I want this place to be good. I really do, but both times I've been I have been pretty disappointed. The last time I went, nearly half the tables weren't bussed and there was food and trash on the floor. That should have been a sign, but I powered forward anyway. The main problem for me was the lack of seasoning in the fried food. It was all sort of bland. They also gave me the wrong fish. I asked for flounder and got catfish. I did like the grits though. Now what I will say is that you get a good-sized portion of food. Also, I've found the staff to be so friendly, which to me helps the overall experience.

Most excellent fried seafood I've ever had... when in Gainesville Florida, it's THE place to go! Everything was cooked perfectly and was delicious. I will be back

Absolutely delicious grouper. The wait staff was great. The best hush puppies. We actually eat there 2 times in four days stay.

Gainesville Seafood, out on the Eastern end of town, is that place. It may not be the easiest spot to stumble upon, but that's part of its charm. This is the kind of hidden gem that loyal regulars keep quietly to themselves, the sort of place that feels like a reward for those willing to seek it out. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, the kind of no-frills setting that lets the food do all the talking. I went for a seafood platter, which was shrimp and fish with fries. They have a variety of different kinds of fish available that you can pick from, which is a nice touch. It gives the meal a sense of personalization that you don't always find at casual seafood spots. I went with the flounder, and it turned out to be an easy choice to feel good about. The platter was generously portioned, the kind of meal that leaves you satisfied without the need to contemplate dessert. All of it was excellent. The flounder was light and flaky on the inside, with a crisp golden crust that had clearly seen well-seasoned oil and confident hands in the kitchen. The shrimp were equally well-executed. They were plump, tender, and fried just right, without any of the rubbery disappointment that lesser seafood joints often deliver. Even the fries held their own, providing a solid, starchy counterpoint to all that seafood goodness. The wait wasn't at all bad either, which is worth mentioning because a place this good can often mean a crowd. Service was attentive without being overbearing, and the whole experience moved at a comfortable, easy pace. Whether you're a Gainesville local or just passing through, Gainesville Seafood is the kind of place worth going a little out of your way for, and once you've been, you'll understand why people keep coming back.

Only open Friday through Sunday, they offer a limited selection with monthly rotating flavors, so expect lines out the door. Knowing to expect a line, especially during move-in weekend, my family and I got there about 10min before opening at 10am. There was already a line wrapped around the block! We ended up waiting in line for about 50min before ordering. Shortly after we ordered and sat down to enjoy our donuts, one of the owners notified everyone there was a limited selection left and it was likely not everyone would receive donuts. So if you are planning on visiting, just be aware of this! The service was excellent and extremely pleasant. The co-owner serving the donuts was super sweet and personable. This husband and wife team run a tight ship and really do their best to serve everyone to their best ability! The inside is quant, but there are a couple of seating options. We appreciated the nostalgic atmosphere and decor throughout. We got to the counter at the perfect time as they were just about out of the brioche. While unable to snag one of the brioche donuts, we were able to try 3/4 brioche filled and 5 of the vegan glazed. All the donuts were genuinely phenomenal and you couldn't tell the vegan glazed was vegan at all. The brioche filled donuts were super pillowy, with ample amounts of luscious cream filling. All the flavors were distinct and very good--you can tell they use fresh, high-quality ingredients. I thoroughly enjoyed the brownie filled brioche and thought the filling was divine, almost reminded me of chocolate mousse! The vegan glazed were also great with a wonderful texture. They too were soft and very fresh, each with good flavor. I honestly enjoyed all 5 of the flavors we tried, especially the Arnold Palmer and Cherry Crumble! Overall, Flatfish GNV was most definitely worth as the hype and praise! The donuts are truly something special, with lovely presentation, flavor, and most importantly texture. The donuts themselves are large too and I definitely think the price is justified. They use great ingredients and it shows in the product they output. While the lines can get long, don't let that intimidate you! The service was perfect and this husband & wife team does a wonderful job running their donut shop. I was extremely impressed and would really like to return to try some more of their monthly flavors!

Pricing was fair, and i purchased two items for 7ish bucks. The interior was also pretty cute too and far more spacious than I thought. But...after waiting an hour...not sure it was quite worth it. The vegan glazed was a little chewy, and the sprinkle strawberry-glaze, that looked so pretty, was really just okay. Even though it's a bakery, it doesn't quite smell like one. the smell is still lingering in my nostrils, and can't quite place it... Great experience for a Gainesville classic. But for this transplant, the hype exceeded the bite!
