We've been trusting Dr. Johner at NW Vet in Blaine with our dogs for over 5 years, and we couldn't be more pleased. Our dog Axel Rose is definitely not a fan of vet visits. In fact, he was especially cranky today and had to wear a muzzle. But Dr. Johner handled the situation with incredible professionalism and calm. He gave Axel the space he needed, observed him from a safe distance, and calmly explained everything to us without escalating the tension. It worked! Axel settled down, and we got the answers we needed. Dr. Johner gave us a clear plan of action for some new concerns and took the time to explain everything thoroughly and patiently. Missy at the front desk is simply amazing, friendly, organized, and once she knows you, she'll probably recognize your voice when you call. It's those personal touches that really make this practice stand out. The vet techs are also wonderful, compassionate, knowledgeable, and clearly care about the animals they work with. We feel lucky to have such a skilled and kind veterinary team so close to home. Highly recommend NW Vet to anyone looking for excellent, compassionate care for their pets. read more

Absolutely awful experience that left both me and my pup shaken. We came here for the first time for a pre-travel health certificate and exam before flying out of state with my 4-pound Chihuahua. My dog has had previous negative experiences at veterinary offices, which is why I specifically chose a new clinic and had hoped for a more compassionate approach. Unfortunately, before I had the opportunity to explain her history or discuss how she does best with handling, the veterinarian attempted to remove her from her carrier. He then stated that she was trying to bite him, despite the fact that she has never bitten anyone in her two years of life. She is fearful and tends to bark when she is scared. She was taken to the back to be weighed and fitted with a muzzle, where I could hear her crying. They later came back and told me that they had put the muzzle on her, but she couldn't breathe properly with it, so it had to be removed. When she was brought back into the room, the veterinarian restrained her by the back of the neck while attempting to administer a rabies booster that I wasn't aware she was due for. As my tiny dog squealed, cried, and tried to get away, the vaccine was ultimately given in her hind end before she was placed back on the floor. I was visibly upset and shaking while this was happening. At no point did I feel that my concerns were heard or that there was any effort to slow down, discuss alternative handling techniques, or take my dog's fear and history into consideration. I left feeling heartbroken that what should have been a routine visit became another traumatic experience for both of us. I understand that veterinary professionals have difficult jobs and that fearful pets can be challenging to handle. However, compassion, communication, and fear-free handling matter--especially with very small dogs that are clearly frightened. I cannot recommend this clinic based on our experience. read more

Some people just like to complain and it is always helpful to recall that the average IQ is below 100. Dr. Johner is the only vet EVER to handle one of my rescues and not be bitten. He gets on the floor with her and talks to her and calls her down before doing his exam. It is amazing to watch every everytime. There is nothing at all I can say bad about this vet office and clinic. The staff is always helpful and on the ball. Dr. Johner is direct and to the point - which some people in this day and age cannot handle. But I like my professionals to be honest and thoughtful. I need to know what to do to handle my dog's issues with not euphemisms. read more

Dr, assistants, and other staff are all always kind and helpful. Started seeing them after moving (back) here in 2016-17 and we can't imagine going anywhere else. They have treated both of our dogs, both of our cats, and a couple of our friends' cats over the years and we don't have a single complaint. The location is really great, too; easy to get to, in/out of, there's always parking available, and it's never overly busy so you feel comfortable going back& forth between your vehicle and the office/entrance. read more

Dr. Johner and the staff here are incredible humans. I have been bringing my cat who was feral here for years now. Dr. Johner is so kind to my cat who literally sits in his carrier and is terrified of everything. He is so good with all animals. I recently rescued a big stray unfixed boy cat who I trapped and they got him in and cleaned up so quickly for me. The staff have been super supportive both here and the Ferndale clinic too. Honestly veterinarians like this are sometimes hard to come by. They're worth every cent. I am so grateful that I found this place and these people. read more

I took my cat there for a checkup and these people told me he needed for teeth removed so I paid for that very expensive vet bill just to find out a year later because of infection and abscesses in his mouth from a different veterinarian and the cause being broken teeth at the gum line so these people did not pull my cat's teeth they simply broke them off at the gum line and left them in there so my cat is now enduring his second infection an abscess is in his mouth I've called and left several messages and they won't even call me back and for some reason my phone calls do not get answered during business hours read more

Absolutely no compassion!! My mother and I had booked an emergency appointment for euthanasia for our elderly family dog. Was told to bring her and they would take care of her. We arrive at the clinic where Dr.Money grabber (Johner), proceeds to belittle and bully us, telling us our dog is no longer a patient of his after not being seen for two years. Mind you, there's been a global pandemic the last couple years and the clinic wasn't seeing patients except for emergencies! So the lecture about her teeth needing be cleaned was kind of a moot point when you've got a thirteen year old tumor riddled dog who hasn't eaten/drunk anything in two days and has lost her continence. But thanks for the helpful lecture and offer to do $180 of bloodwork. The office that actually took care of us took one look and knew immediately it was time. In short, if you need compassionate, respectful care for your animal, go literally anywhere else. read more

I started taking my dog here a year ago after moving from Bellingham. They are a great vet and helped me through my 10 yard old Aussie being diagnosed with kidney disease, (because I was a mess!) getting her on medication and a different food. She also needed to get two teeth pulled that had cracked and were infected. They gave us a very fair price on the oral surgery (I called around to get prices) stating that vet's don't need to charge as much as they do for it. Dr. Johner is kind and seems to really care about animals and my dog seems comfortable there with him. read more

Not questioning the vetinarian services with this review. However, I was extremely disappointed that the three staff members I had contact with did not wear masks or practice any social distancing. This is in violation of governor Inslee's pandemic guidelines. It is also very disrespectful to clients who mindfully wore masks inside the clinic. read more

We've been going to Dr. Johner since he bought the practice (and to Dr.Timmerman who established the practice), and our opinion Dr. Johner is the best general practitioner vet in Whatcom County. Some things to consider: First, both NW Vet Clinic locations (Blaine and Ferndale) are impeccably clean, modern, and comfortable...not fancy/hoity-toity...but very nice. Second, the staff is top notch...professional, personable, super efficient. Third, prices are quite reasonable, given the great care your pets receive. Lastly, Dr. Johner's professional knowledge combined with his easy going demeanor and ability to build rapport with his customers is a perfect combination in a vet. We took our old cat in after she developed a motion/balance problem. They were caring, practical and gave us options that fit our budget. Thanks to them, our old girl is still around a year later, she is just waiting for crab season to start (her favorite treat). Their rates are reasonable and staff are great. We have a rescue pit-bull mix who had initial fears of the vet, and Dr. Johner was compassionate and understanding. He even gave our boy a little tour of the back room so that he could feel more comfortable. He works with my husband to ensure that our pup gets his shots safely and without too much anxiety, and he has provided all around great care to our boy. Some vets would probably just rather muzzle an anxious dog (especially with a breed like ours who faces so many negative stereotypes), but Dr. Johner went the extra mile to avoid that route. Lo and behold, our boy is gradually getting less and less fearful of the vet! Also, the techs and gals at the front desk are wonderful! My only somewhat negative feedback is that my husband called several weeks ago to make an appointment, and no one called him back. However, stuff happens. More importantly, I'm happy with the care and attention my fur baby gets here. read more

I guess I expect more from a vet than what I received here. I am sure that my cat will be healed nicely, but to walk into a vet and have the doctor give a very limited examination of my cat was disappointing. To have to pay more than $60 for her to say to visit a pharmacy and get anti-fungal creme just doesn't seem worth it. I just did not get the level of concern or compassion from this vet, and I disliked paying an amount of money I thought was too much for a service that was at best cursory. read more
