Great place to focus on yourself and on bringing the awareness of your mind together with your body. Dhamma kunja offers a 10 day course for beginners for free...vegetarian food/accommodation included (then if you completed the couses, you can decide whether you'd like to donate...if you don't finish the course, they wouldn't even take your donation!). The course format/schedule is pretty structured (certain asks for participants to abide by), and as such may offend some people. However, if you go into the course with an open mind, I highly believe that you'd benefit from practicing there for 10 days. I went there and carpooled with 2 other ladies from my area and we all didn't know what to expect at the start of the course. At the end of 10 days, we shared what we experienced and it seemed we all thought highly of it. I definitely learned something valuable that I didn't previously know about mind and body connectedness and how it impacted how we behave as people in everyday lives from this course for sure. I definitely recommend this place to anyone who's willing to be open minded and can see themselves practicing or trying something new in a structured way without feeling offended. The people who run and organize the course are very well intentioned, are the people who benefited from this practice and simply want you to experience the same. Personally, I heard of this course/practice from my family 15 years ago..but never bothered to attend one...now. 15 years later..I got a chance to,..I sort of wished I had tried/done it a little earlier, too. Just be prepared mentally and go in with an open mind, and you will be fine/benefit from it!

In the vipassana hall itself there was an outside pitcher with clean water and several cushions for use during meditation.

Heather is a cheerful and patient teacher, perfectly able to make comfortable even those very new to the practice of yoga. One of her loveliest classes consists of mindful breathing and relaxation; letting the body loosen up and let go of all the tension that we hold without knowing. I practiced with Julie as I became more familiar with the basic poses. Her style is gentle, encouraging, and promoting of mindfulness - of listening to your body and not pushing yourself to injury. I am particularly grateful to Julie because after I suffered a knee injury that greatly limited my ability to practice yoga, she helped me design a series of poses with extensive modifications so that I could strengthen my body without exacerbating my pain. Also, I confess that I admired Julie's selection of music for her class so much, that I asked her to share her playlist with me for my home practice (which she generously did). I recommend Heather and Julie's classes wholeheartedly, no matter the level of fitness or previous experience with yoga. The best way to keep up to date with their schedule is via their facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/breathinginvancouver).

There are no welcome to the studio feeling (this was my first time there) nor did he offer to show me the studio or take me on a tour which has been the norm with studios in the past. In addition there were only three students in the class so it was not like he was pressed for time. The class was advertised as Lunchtime Yoga . It was a chair Yoga class that incorporated different types of ballet moves. Huh? I mentioned this was not advertised online but he blew me off. He was not engaging whatsoever during the practice. One of the worst instructors ever. In addition, I sent a complaint through the company website. No response. Classy. Don't waste your time!

I have been attending the Puget Sound Zen Center, both on Vashon and more recently in West Seattle,…read morefor about three years. It is a wonderfully open, cheerful, and thoughtful community, both for experienced practitioners and for those coming for the first time. There are great tips for first-timers here: https://pszc.org/new-to-zen/. I would add two quick things if you are coming for the first time. First, it is a good idea to arrive 15-20 minutes early, regardless of which meditation you attend. It is helpful to get a few pointers on where to sit and what to expect. People will be glad to offer suggestions, and there is always someone assigned specifically to help newcomers. Just ask for "the Shoji." Second, if you do not need wheelchair access, the entrance is right up the steps in the front of the building. The front is the side that looks out on the driveway where you drove in. Like Zen itself, the place has many doors. Like Zen itself, this can be a little confusing. If you need a more accessible entrance, the double doors will be on your right. If they are not open, just knock and someone will no doubt let you in. There is also a satellite Zen Center in West Seattle that meets on Monday nights at Fauntleroy UCC. You can find the schedule and other information for both Zen Centers here: https://pszc.org/.

The practice is…read morerooted in a centuries-old tradition (Rinzai Zen), which feels strong, something I can lean into. When you first start, it might feel foreign, very different, but don't let that dissuade you; the practice, here, is to be true to the discipline while also learning how to teach & apply it in our culture. I also love that there are so many ways to be involved -- from working in the meditation garden, or working in the food garden (food is donated to the food bank), the Racial Healing group - or sitting in meditation on Zoom (every day there's at least one sit). But the thing I appreciate the most is the feeling I get that everyone is sincere, not judgmental or self-righteous. Really just learning how to practice no-self and, from within, transform greed, hatred and ignorance (the vows we say at every sit).
