This brewery was one of our favourite parts of Salem. It was a shame they didn't have more umbrellas outside so everyone could sit in the shade. They serve mainly Czech and German beers. They had a couple different food items, wasn't too fussed by them, but enjoyed their beers. They had a range of different beers to try as well as different pouring styles. Nice glassware as well. Having been to a bunch of craft breweries, I'd have to say that this place was just average. The pros are its pet friendly, has lots of outdoor seating, and nice waterfront views. The cons are beer are expensive, basically no beer is over 5% abv, and location is kind of hard to locate. Having tried 2 different beers they brew; Infinite Jest IPA & Hefeweisse; nothing really stood out as great. I did enjoy the beers, but again would rate them as only average beers. I was expecting something to stand out. I stayed for about an hour, sitting outside, drinking my beers, and enjoying the summer breeze. read more

We stopped by this spot because if there's a brewery around, I've gotta check it out and grab a beverage. It was a hot one and about time to hydrate so we stopped by. I asked the bartender which beer they would suggest to pair with this hot, beautiful day and he suggested the kolsch, so I went with it. They offer half pours, so I was excited for that and got one. The recommendation was perfect! It was nice and refreshing and had really good flavor. There's a couple tables inside and more outside. The outside tables offered large umbrellas keeping it nice and shady. Dog friendly and even permitting families with children until 6p which reminded me a lot of Portland. If you like chuckin' balls, then you're in for a treat because they've got Skeeball! It's an easy walk to if you're in Salem and there is plenty of parking if you're driving. read more

All the beers have a strong European influence so it great to try this take on craft beer. We visited twice during our stay in Salem since there was so much to try on the menu. There was ample outdoor seating and the views were awesome. This is a great brewery to come with a group, large or small, for a chill day with friends. The patio is per-friendly! This place came in clutch during Halloween times in Salem. Luckily the guy behind the bar was personable and easy to order from. 5 stars for him! The food was delicious and just what we needed. It is well located near a lot of attractions in the Salem area, like the Witch Trial Memorial, Peabody Essex Museum, and the Salem Commons about a 10 minute walk. The beer menu is small but has good variety. Our favorites were the Salzburg Radler and Between the Waves. I also recommend the pretzel with their spicy mustard. I believe visiting this place during Covid had a lot to do with the way the service/ staff members treat you. There was a small food menu due to Covid. Which were more like snacks. We ordered the pretzel it was descent. You order your beer and food online through your phone, you don't have a server. They call out your number and you walk up to their table setup and pick up your beers. If you need something you have to order everything online. I had a question about a beer and the staff member who was acting as bar tender ignored me completely at first then was very dismissive. I found that frustrating considering the restaurant was not busy due to limited outdoor seating. I believe this is because their tips are collected Automatically when you check out online so the purpose in being polite or giving good service goes out the door. Which is disappointing. Also since no one was allowed inside only outdoor seating the restrooms were closed to guests but a few porter potties were available across their parking lot. The beers were good and we love trying out different breweries so I would try them out again perhaps when Covid is over. read more

Never had such an issue but to me it seems like you had an issue with our race as we didnt get treated ver nicely. Needed a spot for an after dinner drink and Notch popped up on Yelp. We walked over and found the place rather empty for a Saturday night at 8 PM. We liked the space as it was kind of like a classic warehouse brewery but smaller and better decorated. We received friendly service and grabbed a round of beers. I appreciated that they focused on classics like Pilsners rather than have like 10 hazy IPA varietals. Prices were really high, $7-9 a pint. They have board games to play (we indulged in Scrabble) and they mentioned they do get very busy on certain evenings. read more

I did a flight and tried a bunch off of their tap list and any one of them were beers I'd order on their own. The Fire Walk With Me, especially since rauchbiers aren't easy to come by. Atmosphere: It's spot on. Tons of seating inside, but a really precious outdoor area right on the water. Absolutely perfect location if you're wandering through Salem. If you're visiting or living around the North Shore area, Notch is a top spot to check out. They do Czech style beers--and this approach includes the whole process, from pours to mugs. If that's not your jam, try out some of the other spots from the plethora of breweries. But if you want high quality Czech/German beers, Notch can't be beat. The *only* beer that I've had that I didn't love was the new Rauchtanzer. The concept sounded great (smokey cherrywood) but dang, it was so heavy on the smoke. The person I was with could smell the smoke on my breath. I was hoping for something more subtle, like their other beers. That said, this one "off" beer is not a deterrent for future visits. read more

3.5 Stars rounded up. I struggled with this for a while... Notch Brewery was my favorite of the few we visited while in the Salem, MA area. Beer, Food, Venue, People - nothing jumped out at me as being exceptional, but there were enough notable perks and highlights that I think rounding up made sense. The venue and available space to move around and mingle is great. (If you visit based on this, hopefully you'll agree that I did not mislead you.). The Beer - Let's be honest, this is the most important aspect for any brewery. It can be off-set a bit by other brewery attributes, but to get repeat visits from non-locals the beer is king. PRO - The beer I tried at Notch was all pretty good, and they have a bunch of different styles and options. So many options that you could easily spend several hours or more while hanging out with friends and working your way through the menu (responsibly, of course!). CON - If you're riding the ever increasingly massive IPA, IIPA, NEIPA wave with glee as so many others are, however, Notch won't leave you with as many options as you may have hoped. Additionally, you'll notice that most of their beer is fairly low ABV, which to me means a bit too light and a bit too expensive. I wouldn't let any of that dismay you, however. Sit down, grab some styles, try something. The Venue - The location is pretty great. Good amount of parking, nice patio (on a bit of an ugly waterway, but that doesn't bother us in Amsterdam does it?), a large, easily approachable bar, a very large collection of seating areas that are divided up nicely, and everything is nice and clean. No claustrophobia concerns here for sure. Even if you have a big group, I think you'd be hard pressed to find an area inside that can't accommodate. I didn't look around for a "Max Occupant" sign, but I'd be frankly surprised if they bothered calculating. The Bar, Gear, & Cans - The bar is huge to the point where it's almost daunting when approaching. Should I stand here, stand there, wait, I haven't decided what I want yet. What if I want food and not beer, or cans or a hat? The answer appears to be that it's all the same. Both simple and confusing at the same time. Figuring out what beer they had to go had me staring at the wall for quite some time. I'd like to see either a more defined layout or more outgoing and engaging employees. The Food - They have some interesting little snacks to get you by, but don't show up overly hungry. Pickles, hot pretzels, pickled eggs, meat sticks, etc. read more

I haven't been to Notch in quite awhile but had to go when spending an evening in Salem. The outside seating is awesome - great tables, not too loud, water view - who could ask for more? I love Notch's radlers. I tried both the standard (lemon) and grapefruit and was not disappointed. So fresh and refreshing without a bitter aftertaste. I am definitely a radler girl. Also enjoyed their pretzel. Very salty and paired nicely with butter. Very relaxing environment with fun for kids inside, dog friendly and great beers. read more

Whoever was working the door on Halloween was rude and unprofessional. We had a group of 4 adults, 3 were ahead of me by about two blocks, I told them to go on and get a table so I didn't keep them waiting and I would catch up. They all got seated and as I approached the door man I politely said "hey I'm meeting my party here" (they were just seated 10 minutes prior) The door man TOLD ME that's not how "this" works and my family wasn't allowed to hold a seat for me AT A TABLE. I was like "um what?" My husband even TOLD HIM, hey my wife is on her way she's behind us - and the doorman told my husband it WAS NOT A PROBLEM. So, I asked this disgustingly rude man what the difference was of seating 3 people at a 4 top table vs 4 people at a 4 top table? I guess he didn't like that. He still took my ID and told me he would be "nice" but not before telling me that I was being difficult (I guess because I asked an obvious question or maybe i was a woman standing up for myself) He then forcefully shoved my ID at me and said "HERE, just go". I was genuinely curious what the attitude and hostility was, i just stood there. How could he be rude to me but the second I asked him an honest question he told me I was being difficult? As I walked away I could hear him laughing at me with another patron at the door. I was mortified. When I found my husband and two other people we were with we all got up and left because I don't know what kind of establishment allows their staff to speak to paying customers like that. The brewery had a lot of different options and also great seating both indoors and out. You could also get beers in a lot of different sizes which was great if you just wanted to try one, or if you wanted a 1/2 liter. I love Notch. Salem has a good bar scene, but this place takes it up a notch (I know, I know). It's bit hipper than some other places, with a chill crowd, good music, and good beer. And skee-ball!! Bouncer and bartenders are super friendly and funny. I tasted the Clown Shoes (black currant saison), but it was not for me, so I settled on the Polotmavy, a Czech amber lager, which I really liked. No flights here, which is too bad, so plan to go with friends, or do smaller pours. It's spacious, but had a good crowd on a Saturday night. When I return, I hope to try a pretzel. I had been drinking and eating all day, so didn't get a chance to eat anything or drink more than my one beer. I appreciate the heat lamps and lights in the biergarten, even though I didn't go out there. If you're in Salem and you love (or even like) beer, you have to check out Notch. read more

We were psyched to find a local brewery during our trip to Salem and was pleasantly surprised to find it was walking distance from all of our other activities during the day. The Biergarten at Notch is beautiful and along the water, and the inside is roomy for those days that sitting outside won't cut it. The beertender we had upon our first order was excellent and was very helpful in describing the beers and answering any questions we had. Stopped here on our way out of Salem. I'm so glad we did! I've been to a lot of breweries and the majority of them are heavy on the IPAs. It was refreshing to go somewhere with a different concept.
