I would not recommend this rooftop for a group event after the way our retirement celebration was handled. Before making any reservations, I contacted Olivia, a regional sales manager, to ask about reserving the rooftop for a retirement party. She provided the pricing for reserving the rooftop, and I explained that rather than booking the entire rooftop, I preferred to simply reserve tables for our guests. She directed me to hotel management at the location for table reservations. I then went to the hotel in person, told the staff that we were expecting approximately 50 attendees and wanted to reserve tables for about two hours. I was specifically instructed by the hotel staff to make the reservations through the OpenTable app. OpenTable limits how many guests can be included on one reservation, so several people in our group made separate reservations to accommodate the number of attendees we had already disclosed to the hotel. Some reservations were under the same last name, and all identified the occasion as a retirement party. The day before the event, the hotel even contacted those who had made reservations to confirm that we were still coming and asked about the occasion. We confirmed that we were and again stated that it was a retirement party. Despite all of that, when we arrived on a 90+ degree day, our group was seated in the section exposed to the sun with no shade, while other seating in shaded areas remained available. The rooftop manager then told us they were not expecting such a large group and said we should have arranged it through the regional sales manager, the exact person I had originally contacted, who had directed me to hotel management for table reservations. Hotel management, in turn, had directed me to OpenTable. When I explained this, the manager asked me to produce Olivia's email. At that point, I was trying to welcome guests to a retirement celebration, not search through my work emails to prove that I had followed the hotel's own instructions. The problems continued. Although these were multiple individual OpenTable reservations, the manager assigned one server to the entire group and would not allow separate checks. I had already told our server that I was purchasing appetizers for each table, while individual attendees would be responsible for their own meals and drinks. The server later came back and explained that the rooftop manager had instructed her that everything had to be placed on one bill. Even more frustrating, members of our group were told they could not simply go to the rooftop bar and purchase their own drinks, even though the bar remained open and other rooftop guests were able to use it. Instead, our guests' drinks also had to be placed on the same bill. Then we learned that some of our attendees were actually being stopped downstairs at the elevator and prevented from coming up. When we questioned the rooftop manager, he again said they had not expected such a large group. We asked what the rooftop's capacity was, and he could not tell us. There were still other guests being allowed upstairs and available seating, so the rooftop did not appear to be at capacity. Only after we raised the issue did he say he had contacted the front desk and told them to allow our remaining guests upstairs. By the end of what was supposed to be an enjoyable retirement celebration, I had to apologize to coworkers who had initially been kept downstairs and then go from person to person asking what they had ordered and collecting money because management refused to split the bill. Some people did not have cash and others did not use electronic payment apps. It was embarrassing, unnecessary, and completely avoidable, particularly for drinks that guests could have purchased directly from the open bar. What bothers me most is that we did not simply show up with 50 people and expect the hotel to accommodate us without notice. I contacted the regional sales manager first. I then went to the hotel in person. I disclosed that we expected approximately 50 attendees. I explained what we wanted to do. I followed the hotel's instruction to use OpenTable. The individual reservations identified the same retirement celebration, and the hotel confirmed those reservations the day before. If the hotel does not permit multiple table reservations for a group of this size, that should have been explained when I stood in the hotel and specifically told staff how many people would be attending, not after everyone arrived. The booking process was poorly coordinated, and the way the situation was handled on the day of the event was rude, embarrassing, and highly unprofessional. What should have been a pleasant retirement celebration instead became something I had to spend my time managing and apologizing for. I will not return. read more

My cousin recommended this place because we love a good rooftop. When we got to the hostess stand the two girls running it asked us, "Would you mind sitting here?" They pointed at a table that was tucked away and didn't have any view or sun. The tone of their voices sold it as a bad seat we wouldn't want. We said we'd prefer the other side, which was practically empty. They seemed a little annoyed but took us over. The view of the city was great! My husband and I are guests at the hotel and were feeling lazy. I'm not sure if the restaurant is still The Roof if you're eating inside during the winter? Regardless, I was very pleased with the service tonight. My husband has an allium allergy and the team were helpful in finding something he could enjoy after learning there was garlic powder in the original dish he wanted. The kitchen even sent out homemade chips when his dish took a bit longer than mine. My burger was delicious and I always appreciate a hand cut french fry. I stopped by here with a friend to grab a quick drink one Friday night. When you step into The Hotel Salem, keep walking towards the back and you will get to the elevator. Go all the way up to the top and you will get to the rooftop bar. Up there they have tables, benches, and some comfortable lounge seats, as well as the typical bar stools. Our waitress was friendly and gave suggestions from their intricate cocktail menu. We each had a drink off the menu and then one specialty drink that the bartenders were able to whip up. On a midsummer night, with the sun down, it was a very pleasant temperature up there and the views of downtown Salem in all directions were great. Service is pretty non existent with most of the staff more worried about chatting than taking care of people. Came with a group of 7 last night. Courtney was our server and did an excellent job taking care of us. The location is lovely, right on Essex Street, and the views are the best. We started off with wings, guacamole, and the stacked beef quesadilla. Wings lacked flavor, and the onions were barely sauteed and cold, but they were cooked well. The guac was deemed super fresh with a lovely lime taste, but the abundance of lettuce leaves on the bottom was not needed. The quesadilla was an interesting concept that didn't quite work; however, the beef was seasoned well. While the start did not do much to impress me. All the mains were on point. Many chose burritos, and I had the shrimp po boy special, which was very good and just the right size for my appetite. The sauce was zingy and really made the mini sandwiches shine. This was an exceptional place to celebrate a friend's birthday and have a casual night out. My family and I came in here right before last call a few weeks ago and had a great drink! The modern rooftop vibe is unlike anything else we found in Salem. There is lots of seating and they have fun cocktails! I tried the Apple cider mimosa and it was the perfect fall drink! Made plans with my cousins to grab some drinks in Salem. One cousins suggested this place that we ended up arriving around 8. Fortunately there was no line so we were able to go right up the elevator and get seated pretty quickly. The tortillas for the tacos were completely flaccid as it was not toasted and filling looked to be not the best. Nacho were decent with the almost watery guacamole. We hit East Regiment Brewing, but they were only selling beer to go but they weren't serving. Walking back to Derby I saw the Hotel Salem and I was like "OMG I haven't been to the Roof yet. You wanna go here instead?" Mike was down to check it out, he didn't know about it. We went to the Roof and informed the host that we had beer, but swore we weren't gonna drink it, we had come from the brewery and looking for food and drinks. "That's alright guys, I'll show you to your table. Here, you even have space to put your beer down." Super accommodating, I super appreciated it but was totally understanding if their answer was no. Having been open a couple of years, I had been wanting to check this place out. I mean, you are having drinks at a bar, on the roof of a building overlooking the Essex Street pedestrian section with additional view of the surrounding Downtown area. Of course our server said "oh, you just missed the sunset. Most people come in around that time." Then I realized that the view of the sun setting over Salem would be an absolute delight at the end of the day. Another reason to return! Even still, it was an awesome view at dusk while enjoying nachos and drinks with my friend Mike. There was a healthy amount of lobster but again no seasoning on the lobster and it was literally just corn on guacamole, no onion or anything else that would say salsa just corn. 6. The ancho chilli chips tasted old and hard and again no flavor, possibly salt but nothing else. 5. In an attempt to save 24 dollar guacamole we asked for lime and hot sauce, the hot sauce was gas station texas Pete's, which I like but realllyyy that is the best a tiki-taco-roof top can come up with. Always I would highly not recommend unless you are just going to drinks or you have a health condition that requires you to keep your taste buds in a comma.
