During my visit a couple weeks ago, I decided to stop into this place, and I'm so glad I did! I got the pork chops. As you can see, the portion was huge and I was only able to eat one lol. I love how they did the pork chops with the applesauce on the side, which reminded me of my grandma because that's how she used to eat pork chops. The service was great. The staff were awesome and it's definitely happening place. The only downfall I would say was the outside door was open so it was pretty chilly inside. Prices reasonable and it's a nice size restaurant for seating inside and out. If you're in the area, definitely come and check this place out. You won't be disappointed.! read more

This restaurant has since closed, but I visited in September 2025. I am a foodie, so there is rarely a time where I go to a restaurant without viewing their menu beforehand to check out the options. The Derby looked like it had some really interesting and tasty options based on their menu that I read online. Given its location in downtown Salem, The Derby is at the hub of all of the action going on during the extremely busy fall season where hundreds of thousands of people flock to the city. I checked it out on a Saturday morning around 11:30 AM and was able to get a seat at the bar. The rest of the restaurant was starting to fill up. I was surprised when they brought me a limited fall menu, a paired back version of their full, normal menu for the rest of the year. Now I wasn't shocked at this, it makes sense that restaurants in Salem have to scale back their options when serving such a mass quantity of people around Halloween. I just wished The Derby had updated their online menu, like so many other restaurants in Salem do. This limited menu was exactly that: limited. I can always find something to eat anywhere, no matter the cuisine type, but I was struggling here. I got a pumpkin beer and the pork belly tacos for $14. I was surprised at how quickly the tacos were brought out but when I saw them, it made sense why. These were two tiny tacos, maybe 2 to 3 bites each. I expected at least a little more volume for the price. The pork belly was crispy and they had good flavor but I couldn't help but feel cheated and sorry for the rest of the people coming into the restaurant who would spend their hard earned money visiting Salem only to probably get other menu items that were scaled down in size. Needless to sayit left a bad impression on me and I vowed not to visit again until I could confirm that they had their full yearly menu back. Unfortunately, it looks like the restaurant has now closed so I won't get that chance. read more

The food, I have mixed reviews the devil eggs amazing so good we got second order. The angry shrimp not so good, I love spicy food to the point my mouth is numb but these things, you couldn't even eat, think this is the first time that didn't eat more then a bit of what I ordered. You couldn't taste the shrimp. The bartender Bianca was great she was friendly and helpful. The drinks were great. AWESOME ATMOSPHERE! Service was great! The guy at the Front door "checking everyone in" was a great distraction from the line of people all waiting to get a table. Food was fantastic. Ordered the Southwest Salad w/ grilled chicken and a grilled chicken breast w/ crinkle cut fries. Hubby said the salad had a great meld of flavor. He loved the Citrus Vinaigrette Dressing too. Nice large bar/restaurant in the area to watch sports games and listen to live music. Came here the other night with my husband and we had a great time. They have a fantastic craft beer selection on tap and our bartender Zach was wonderful. We already went out to eat before coming here so we didn't not get to eat anything here except for this amazing brownie peanut butter pie thing with ice cream. This is the best location to watch sports. Hands down. Great sports bar and they have the best drink names that we had come across in Salem. I ordered the fish and chips and I felt it was a little bland but some of the other items like deviled eggs and fries were delicious. Mediocre food and limited selection makes this nothing other than a corner bar, which it is. The meat in the Prime Rib Dip, had no business being called prime rib. The low grade of meat coupled with the relatively small size, made this dish very disappointing. If your hungry you can find something to eat, but if you can hold off for another couple of minutes there are plenty of dive restaurants in the area. read more

It was the last night of my sister and I's trip. We had a few drinks at a bar not too far but we weren't drunk. We went to derby cause it was the only place open at 10:30 at night. We go in and ask for a table for us and the waitress blatantly whispers something to what would be the manager. And he then proceeds to tell us that they will not serve us drinks. (I understand that they can do that but we weren't even slurring our words). The food was average at most. It was good but not the greatest. As my sister and I are sitting at our table, I notice a table next to us whose patrons were stumbling and knocking cans off the wall but were still getting served. Halfway through the our meal, I noticed that the manager or whoever he was, was eagle eyeing our table as if we were gonna do something. We were in Salem on a day trip in November, and Salem was still pretty busy. This is your typical gastro pub with a wide selection of beers, upscale(ish) bar food, and oiled wood décor. They had a few added touches, though, like a vintage arcade game and a secret Silence of the Lambs decoration on the ceiling. See if you can find it if you go. Since we came after the Halloween rush, they were out of everything from all the pumpkin beers, pretzels, and pizzas...which is understandable, but items were still listed on the beer menus and specials on the wall. It was hard as a non-meat-eater to find something to eat, and the French onion soup was LOADED with meat. All in all I was pretty disappointed in the beer selection and food when we went. This is not to say I won't go back. Service was amazing. I think I just hit it at the wrong time. read more

My mom and I wanted a light lunch after our massage nearby. There are plenty of seats both in your an outdoor, so we fortunately have the option to pick. Since it was a mild day, we opted for the seats outside given their location on a corner and the opportunity to people watch. My mother ordered the Sausage with a side of scrambled eggs and I had the Huevos rancheros. Even though we weren't intending to eat a lot, I was still surprised by how small the portions were. Everything was very straightforward and simply seasoned. Overall, very neutral experience. After that we barely saw her after that, my partner had asked for another cup of ranch for their wings but never received it. Service was quick at 3:00PM on a Saturday. The restaurant had indoor high tops and low tables as well as outside seating. I recommend this place! Each meal was around $18-25. We went their on a Wednesday for early dinner and it was kind of quiet. Our server, Jenna was really friendly and always checking on us to see if we needed anything. You will find a list of American comfort food. We ordered the sweet corn nacho with chicken. One of the best nacho because they home fired their nacho chip. Some restaurants just used the packaged one but not here. I loaded with chicken, corn, black bean and cheese. Really generous serving. I was full by the time we finished the nacho and couldn't finish half of my Che Che Che Cheese Streak. The skinny fires that came with it was crispy. My husband ordered a cheese burger and nothing special as this was expected. Our daughter ordered a Tomato Mozzarella Melt and she said it was okay. It wasn't her first choice as she wanted to order their spaghetti & meatball sub but it was unavailable. It was the second time that happened to her. I'm an out of town visitor and went to visit Derby. Once we got to the front door we were welcomed by an older gentleman working there. We gave him our government issued ids. Once he say it was a Canadian id he asked if we had our passports. He told us if we didnt have our passports we were not welcome. We had just left a restaurant up the street and had no issues with the ids we provided them. later to find out from a local that this employee was just being a jerk and rejecting us. We came here for brunch. There were a lot of options for breakfast foods available. The chocolate chip pancakes came in a large stack with whipped cream and a chocolate drizzle. The food was hot and the pancakes were nice and fluffy. The server was very friendly and I found the restaurant to be clean and organized. I do wish that they had more non-alcoholic breakfast based beverages, but for those who like cocktails, you will not be disappointed! read more

Ate here for dinner on a Saturday and was able to be seated quickly. I ordered the apppe cider sangria which was perfect- not overly sweet or too strong with alcohol, which I prefer. The poutine was AMAZING with the pork belly! I was here for st Patrick's day weekend with their special menu and got the Guinness stew- it was too salty. I finished it but didn't want to. The pasta was good. I really enjoyed the peanut butter bomb. The service was quick and friendly. The location is perfect for tourist. I would love to come back for their brunch menu. read more

I visited the Derby on Saturday as part of a small "pee-mergency." I was with a group of friends and we had plans to go to other places, but once we were in and saw all the creative + humorous decorations, we liked the vibe and decided to grab a few drinks and apps before heading to our next destination. We got 2 apps, the chicken pot pie empanadas and the pretzel bites. Both were the $14/$15 price point, so, for bar food they were definitely on the pricier side. The pretzel bites had four small sticks in the order, with two side sauces (beer cheese and a mustard aioli). We got this specifically to share, and we were dumbfounded at the small amount of food that was in the teeny basket. For $14, I'd expect at least double that amount. Chicken empanadas... same thing. There were only three empanadas. Both dishes were quite tasty and we really enjoyed them. I know inflation is really an issue these days, but again, for some quick bar bites, the portions felt quite skimpy. I'd come back here for drinks but maybe not the apps, sadly. read more
