What started out as Christmas tree shopping…read morewhen our boys were little has now turned into a yearly tradition that we hope one day they will continue with their own families. Not only do we go to them during the holidays but rely on them throughout the year when we need additional plants and trees for our backyard. We first started using Whitfill back in the early 2000's when they were on 40th street south of Roeser. We literally lived across the street from their nursery and when they moved to their current spot on Southern we followed! We have decades of photos with our boys standing next to the tree they choose for Christmas and the tradition continues now with our Sphynx cats! They used to have a peacock walking around but unfortunately he is no longer there. They are pet friendly and we are comfortable taking our cats there in the stroller. Not only are their prices and tree selections the best in town but their customer service and knowledge of anything tree related is vast! They know what they are doing and don't try to upsell or get you to buy unnecessary items. They are the real deal!

I shouldn't need to walk all the way back up front to ask -- and I've been giving the wrong information before anyhow. Its important to know what kind of plant you're buying for multiple reasons. The other Whitfill location (off Guadalupe and Cooper) doesn't have this issue. Overall I think the plants are pretty healthy but after having an issue with lack of labeling (on both the kind of plant and pricing), having been given the wrong plant info on a plant, and after having asked if they had Pink Fairy Duster and being sent off in a direction to wander and never find it on my own, I'm really over this location.

The staff immediately greets you with a warm welcome, and the entrance is so beautiful. Fillmore Coffee Co. is sighted as soon as you enter and there's some cute seating options. It's open until 3 pm and they have breakfast, lunch, and drinks. There are so many gorgeous plants to choose from. Staff is so helpful and eager to educate you on what would be best for your home. I ended up bringing more than one plant home and I can proudly say they've been blooming ever since. I appreciate the advice they gave me on taking care of my babies and I want to go back for more. Their plants are pricier than you'd find elsewhere but it was a great birthday experience for me.

They had everything from flowering plants and tropicals to indoor plants, succulents, and a wide variety of cacti. If you are looking for something specific or just want to wander and explore, this place has something for every plant lover. We picked up a beautiful artichoke agave, and the person who helped us was great. He was very knowledgeable and took the time to explain how best to plant and care for it. You can tell the staff here genuinely knows their stuff and enjoys what they do. The selection of planters and pots was also impressive. There is a massive area filled with every size, shape, and style you could imagine. It makes it easy to find something that fits your space and aesthetic. Whether you are just getting into plants or already have a growing collection, The Plant Stand is absolutely worth a visit. Great service, an incredible variety, and a peaceful place to shop.

Visiting Shamus O'leary's Tropical Fruit Trees nursery is a treat. There are so many amazing, hard to find varieties in his nursery, and, there are so much to learn from it. The ambiance shows that the crew here doesn't just preach but actually practices treating the ground well, some permaculture, and the like. We've gotten kaffir lime, white sapote, jamun (javan plum), apricot, barbados cherry, several kinds of kumquat, red finger lime, etc here. Very happy with all of them. That said, several citrus we purchased were still staked long after needed and one's stake is embedded in the trunk (we couldn't pull it out when we planted). My understanding is that it isn't hurting the tree but still. Just an important note: they're happy to schedule a time after hours for you to come purchase trees but don't show up within an hour before close for a large order because they might not be able to accommodate without feeling squeezed.
