After reading a few of the prior reviews I couldn't believe we worked with the same Tom and Betsy. We had fabulous results. We have a big kitchen - 47 doors and drawers. Nu-Look replaced our old hickory cabinets with custom white maple doors from Canestoga Cabinets and wrapped the cabinet boxes and faces. Our kitchen looks strikingly beautiful and we have received so many compliments. We were told work would begin the Monday after Thanksgiving and it did. The carpenters were amazing--no cursing, no loud music, no unusual breaks. Showed up when expected and left when expected. We are used to having many different remodeling professionals at our house and this was the best experience ever. read more

I had Tom and his company reface my cabinets and I worked through Nu Look to have my counter tops replaces. I found working with Nu Look to be difficult and, at times, it felt combative. A few of my complaints and disappoints are: despite warning them ahead of time of the sizing requirements for cabinet hardware they still delivered the wrong size. When I called the out on it they didn't seem willing to do anything about it. Their response seemed to be "oh well, just go to Home Depot". I had expected "out the door pricing" but they are not a remodeling company. They do cabinets and THAT IS ALL. Any other service will require you dealing directly with that sub contractor. The company that did my counter tops, (as referred strongly by Tom), didn't repair the drywall that needed touch-ups due to the install. They had also told me during the measurement phase that the counters wouldn't need a seam but then changed their tune and claimed it was impossible to install without a seam (it was possible, but it would have been a challenge that they didn't want to take). Nu Look was not at all clear about the process and seemingly accused me of non-payment after their crew came by but never asked me for any payment. Nu Look is OK if ALL you want are new cabinet doors. For every single other step you will be completely on your own. In addition they are a bit of a challenge to work with. read more

This place is severely disorganized! After my initial email inquiry I received a reply from Betsey that they do not service our town. OK. Then a few weeks later I receive a call from Carolyn saying how sorry she is that she didn't get back to me, was on vacation etc. She says that she consulted with a company principle and that they could do my job in the spring/late summer, a time frame I had requested. She talks up their whole company & program & says that she will send me an email requesting photos for a guesstimate. The email greeting, "Hell Linda". My name is Lisa. I send the photos as requested and then followed up to make sure they had received them. This was on Oct.7. Now I get a rather impersonal email(although with my correct name!) stating that they can't do my project. Very annoyed that they have wasted my time & energy but relieved that I am not working with them because I think this may be an omen to how the job would proceed. Addenda: Carolyn just called back to apologize. She had interpreted the owners response "yes" to mean that they could do the project????? read more

My wife and I just finished a kitchen update and made the unfortunate mistake of working with Nu-Look Cabinet Refacing for the cabinetry portion of our project. Of all the contractors we worked with on this project (plumbers, electricians, countertop installers, tiling professionals, etc.) Nu-look was the only one that we had issues with. Things started off alright and Tom, the owner, seemed like a nice guy but we eventually found out he doesn't have the customers best interest in mind. After signing our contract and taking measurements of the kitchen, Tom asked to return and take some additional measurements. Encouraged by this seemingly thorough attention to detail, we gladly had him come back and take his final measurements. It wasn't until the materials arrived and his carpenter began working that we found out he had not measured and/or ordered a few of the items correctly. One of the items being the toe kick. Instead of ordering the toe kick right away after realizing the mistake, he told his carpenter to just use a piece of plywood and cover it with laminate. The real problems began when the installation of the new doors was completed. We had chosen to do a custom color on our bottom cabinets in a dark teal color. Tom told us we could choose ANY color from Sherwin Williams library and for an additional charge the cabinets could be done in this color, so we did. Once the cabinet doors were installed we noticed that the finish did not cover evenly. Every single door had spots that are lighter and spots that are darker. Nu-look never checked the doors for quality when they received them from their vendor and instead just installed them as is. We were obviously upset by this considering we paid extra for the custom color so we brought up the issue and Nu-look had representatives from their manufacturer, Conestoga Wood Specialties, come over and look at the doors. The representatives immediately noticed the poor quality and took one of the doors back to their facility to be examined. We should also mention that when the representative went to remove the door it actually fell off in his hands, to which Betsy (co-owner of Nu-look) replied that longer screws should have been used and their carpenter would have to come back to fix that. A week and a half later we were told by Betsy via email: "The color has both dark and light pigment colortone. They feel that the doors did not get painted evenly so the edges appear to look lighter." So they admitted the doors did not get painted correctly and instead of doing the right thing and making us a new set of doors with solid coverage, their solution was to come back and take down all the doors they had just installed, send them back to the manufacturer, and have them "re-work them" (a minimum three week process). We asked for clarification as to what "re-work" meant and never received a clear answer. We were of course hesitant to do this since the manufacturer couldn't paint them correctly the first time and again asked if they could just send a new set of properly finished doors. After going back and forth for about a week via email and phone, Nu-look said "Their conclusion is due to the color of the paint, the doors cannot be remade because the same thing would happen again." Nu-look and Conestoga do not stand behind their work. They say you can choose any color but they clearly cannot finish dark colored doors properly. When we asked if they had a backup plan if they could not fix them, they said they did not. At this point Nu-look offered to reimburse us a small amount of money if we kept them as is. It was clear to us that we didn't really have a choice as they were unwilling to do the right thing for their client. So now we are stuck with these cabinets that are splotchy and unevenly painted. If you choose to work with this company DO NOT GET A DARK COLORED CABINET! And definitely don't pay extra for a custom color. We cannot stress this point enough. Just when we thought things couldn't get any worse, after our new floor was installed our flooring contractor told us that Nu-Look did not order enough trim molding (in the custom color). We emailed Nu-look to tell them and Instead of trusting us and ordering the remaining amount, Nu-Look said they had to send their carpenter over to confirm there wasn't enough molding. After wasting our time with a needless appointment, their contractor confirmed that Tom had not ordered the right amount of trim and it would take three more weeks to get the remainder. While waiting for the trim to come in we were sent multiple invoices to pay for the final amount of the project even though it was not complete. Working with Nu-look may save you a few bucks, but the quality of their materials is so poor it's not worth it. It will definitely cause you a lot more headaches and take much longer than expected. This is a small husband and wife business that has a lot to learn about quality and proper customer service. read more

The list that I was going to post here of all the complaints I had was so long that there was not enough space in this forum. Suffice it to say that I absolutely do NOT recommend this company. I signed the contract in April and the work was finished in September, eventually finished to my satisfaction as far as it was in his power to do so by an employee, Steve Catone, absolutely NOT because of the owners. Tom and Betsy Ruff will be as nice as can be when you meet them, but I assure you that they don't have much idea of what constitutes good quality. In fact, when I complained about the shoddy workmanship, I was told by Tom (the owner) that the reason that I had chosen refacing over new cabinets was that I had wanted to save money, so I should expect things to not be quite perfect. That was NOT what I was told when he came to give me an estimate. He told me the cabinets would be wonderful. Quick list of specifics: Cabinet doors and drawer faces were wrong size - had to be re-ordered Laminate was bowed and cut too short in places There were gaps between top trim and cabinet wall The roll out shelves had to be re-installed several times - crooked, in wrong place, etc. The drawer boxes were sent without being factory-routed. Was done badly on site. Caused a lot of play or wiggle in drawers One of the drawers was installed crooked The edges were not sanded to look finished The drawer faces needed to be reinforced I cannot spend any more time on this review - not worth it. The owners will possibly respond to this, but believe me, there are other companies out there - choose a different one if you want to avoid the summer I have had. As I said, all these things were fixed, thanks to Steve Catone. Might be a good idea to hire him instead! read more

I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome of our kitchen. I researched and received estimates from several companies to reface my existing cabinets. I love the layout of my kitchen and the cabinets were in excellent condition, I just didn't care for the wood grain and couldn't justify purchasing all new cabinets. Nu Look quoted a 3rd of the cost, quicker turn around time and real Cherry cabinet doors. We entered into contract Mid-September and had a completed kitchen prior to Thanksgiving.
