My husband turned me onto a hairdresser almost twenty years ago. We are so proud of their progress. These ladies went from a couple of chairs to a full-on salon in the best borough of NYC! I'm writing this for the next non-loced person who is searching for a new natural-hair salon to get a deep condition, gentle blow out, and braids/twists. THIS. IS. IT. COME HERE. This is a unisex salon specializing in all things Black hair. I walked in one random day and made an appointment for Friday at 9 am. Yep, you read that correctly - NINE. AY. EHM. First, Pat my stylist was there from like 8:30. I walked in and she was ready - no waiting. Immediately, she ushered me over to the sink. As she washed my hair, she was super gentle and I had to fight not to fall asleep under her hands. While I was getting my hair done, person after person came in to have their hair re-twisted and I should say, I have never EVER seen a salon move with such speed, efficiency, and precision. Hands expertly moving in one direction or another, there was no hesitation and no one left waiting. It was sight to behold! Needless to say, everyone finished their appointments with their hair glistening. As I got up from the sinks, ready to head to the dryer for my deep condition, I touched my hair and was shocked - my hair hasn't felt this moisturized in YEARS. I also noticed: no one was sitting around waiting for their appointments to start. There was no backchat or gossip going on, and the atmosphere inside felt calm. The salon smelled of all the best creams and butters you could imagine. What it didn't smell like was cow foot or curry (don't get me wrong, I love cow foot AND I love curry but I don't want to be smelling someone's food and hearing them suck on/spit out goat bones while I'm trapped in a salon chair haha [sidebar: sucking on goat and oxtail bones is delicious and yes, chicken bones too. IYKYK. Anyway....]) I'm not sure that they braid with extensions here (you'll have to check) and they definitely DONT do relaxers (for anyone who by 2021 is still engaging in that godforsaken practice haha) but they do EVERYTHING ELSE and baby, they do it WELL! Anyway, Pat expertly finished my hair and before she was finished, I was already excited to come back for my next appointment. Nu Wave is just what my hair was waiting for! I have thick natural curly hair. Went for a trim, which most stylists do after a light blowout. My usual stylist at a different salon was unavailable. Stylist here seemed upset I wanted to rock the blowout after the trim instead of rewetting my hair. I asked her to lightly press, like I always get elsewhere and they understand to not crank up the heat. Stylist here used an ultra hot flat iron then. When I asked her to turn down the temp, she lectured me and had a bad attitude. My hair was smoking like crazy. At one point she says, while singeing my hair, that she always cuts her hair off after wearing it straight. Needless to say, I left with permanent hair damage that had not occurred with quarterly trim/blowouts with other salons and stylists. I still cant believe she said that, halfway through doing my hair. It haunts me to this day. Very upsetting experience. I would therefore only go here if you fit their beauty ideals and beliefs about what a black woman should look like. I would give 0 stars but they do use nice products for natural curly hair. read more

Initially I was nervous about having someone I don't know touch my hair but my stylist was so gentle (I'm tender headed) and understanding (I work overnight and was sleeping throughout the whole process. I was very disappointed with my recent experience at Nu Wave. I had an appointment with Nilaja for a haircut. After she checked out her client (there was no receptionist working the front desk that day), she told me that she'd be with me soon. At that point, she was already a half-hour late. She was a half-hour late the first time I went to the salon, but at least she apologized. My time is valuable; I left after waiting an hour. I won't be back. Ive gone to this salon since I was a child for loc maintenance. I love coming here. All stylists are so kind. Staff that wash your hair are thee best and I always tip them individually. It feels like a therapeutic experience. The products they use are my favorite and encourage hair growth. My locs are clean, moisturized, healthy. This is hands down. one of the best natural hair salons in the greater New York City area. The service can be pricey, but it is worth it as it can last, nourishes your tresses and looks phenomenal. I went in in December to get a two strand twist style done. I was AMAZED by the caliber of service. the shampoo was awesome ( please have cash to tip your shampoo girl. It is a different person than your stylist and because it was my first time, I was unprepared for this) after the shampoo was over, the conditioner was placed in my hair, my whole head was combed out with the shampoo in and then parted and sectioned off in twists. THEN the conditioner was rinsed out while the fat twists were still in my head. After which oil was applied and I was placed under the dryer. I haven't had my hair prepared so well since my mama was doing it. They also offer several cool deep conditioning options, but I didn't choose one when I went so I can comment on the quality of those. In general though, six weeks later I am impressed by the texture and care of my hair from their last styling. They styled my hair dry which I was not used to and a little apprehensive about ( I am generally am pretty antiheat) but it turned out beautifully and lasted literally up until today. I am a teacher and set an appointment for after work so I was DOG tired and didn't speak clearly to my stylist about what we would be doing. There was a discrepancy in the cost, but they ultimately were incredibly kind and knowledgeable through a communication failure on both of our parts. It is always nice to experience the customer is always right as a tenet of a business that you enjoy supporting. I would highly recommend this salon and have made it my monthly go to for my hair maintenance. Can't wait to see how I grow with them! read more

This happened to be the first natural hair salon I've been to since going natural. Unfortunately, I feel like my experience could have been better. The salon is located in a cute area with lots of small cafés, a wine shop, and a few restaurants. This place has a very African theme going. The color of the walls, exposed brick, and the decor are beautiful. However, there are NO mirrors. How this salon has been able to function without wall mirrors is beyond me, but very frustrating as I like to see what's going on with my hair. The hair dressers are extremely nice. I was taken in last minute and received my service as soon as I walked through the door. I received an invigorating hair wash and scalp massage, and got my ends trimmed. The services were a bit pricey and I didn't necessarily agree with their method of trimming. It wasn't until I was about to leave when the stylist gave me hair advice. I probably won't return, but this place seems to know what they're doing with their dread hair clients. I saw some beautiful work being done to multiple heads! So I definitely suggest this place for someone looking for a relocking or a dread styling. read more

I personally see Atim and she puts up with my shenanigans of making my locs look long in whatever style she decides on. Durma is the best at washing hair. Her pressure is just right. She frequently asks if you want more or less pressure. I simply love coming to this oasis. If you want to go to a place where everybody knows your name (queu the Cheers music) definitely come here. So I am trying to write a longer review, so you might see my name a few times. Upon entrance you feel a sense of warmth and at the spa. Stylist are friendly, their conversations include you as the client. I didn't expect better hair washing skills than my former salon, but Derma's hands are my new addiction. The entire process allows for your comfort. Derma's hands are strong but not painful. After going to Dominican salons and having relaxers, I am mad at myself for not doing this a while ago. There are no mirrors while you are getting you hair done, reason being; less distraction to the client and stylist. Trust is a very BIG concept at Nu Wave. They feel privileged that you put such in them. If you've concerns about your hair: loss of hair, Cancer, bald spots or require privacy, there is a separate room in the store that allows for such comfort. . If you are going to be spending most of your time there. A delicious company delivers West Indian food; just ask one of the stylist. You've no need for music and food, just go with your money and however you're feeling, I guarantee your moods will be lifted after. read more

This is a lovely salon - just not for me (more on that in a moment). The shop is nicely appointed, love that they have books, rather than magazines, to read. The staff was very friendly and by 9:30am, the place was already filled with customers. My wash was fantastic - scalp massage, consistently checking if it was too hard or itching. My stylist didn't arrive until part-way through my wash and thus did not see my hair when I came in. I have curly coily, classic 3c hair. As a first time visitor to the salon, I thought there would have been more conversation about my hair before she started. But to be fair, I only scheduled a wash and trim, so what was there to talk about. Apparently a lot! After the trim (btw, who blows out hair and trims it dry?!?), she asked what I "wanted done" with my hair, and I said I am a wash and go girl, so she said she would re-wet my hair and put some curl crème in. What she did was soak my hair in some leave in conditioner, a ton of oil, and put me under the dryer having done some two strand twists - I think. The one oddity of the salon - NO MIRRORS - ANYWHERE! Now, I certainly could have asked more questions or suggested things be done differently, but I was enjoying the experience and if what she was doing ended up looking great, then it's all good. In the end, I looked like I had been in bed for two days with the flu. I did not know anyone could take out the coils and add frizz to my hair in such an alarming way. In trying to fix it, she brought over a soaking wet terry cloth towel and ran it through my hair to get some of the oil out. And as any good naturalista knows, terry cloth is like running Velcro through your hair. Any vague hint of curl definition was gone. She finally offered to rinse it out, but after 2.5 hours at the salon, I figured I would cut my losses. She recognized that this was not a good experience for me and put notes in their system about what to do differently next time. I appreciate the customer service, but would have appreciated it more if she had asked 2 hours prior. It wasn't until I was leaving the salon that I realized that every single solitary person there had locs, braids, or twists (or a TWA). Somewhere in the Universe, black women with natural hair have been divided into two groups - those that loc/braid/twist and those who don't. This salon does not cater to the latter. read more

I've been locked for over 6 years and have never been as satisfied as when I left Nu Wave! Everyone was professional and the atmosphere "deliciously" pleasant. Their expertise shows through in every step of the process. The hair care and craftsmanship were phenomenal. The shampoo was absolutely amazing... it felt wonderful and left no doubt that the dye had been properly washed out of my hair. And they were not skimpy with their hair care products -- color, shampoo, etc. The up-do fit my face, was painless, versatile and required the use of very few pins. When I left there you knew I'd gotten my 'hair did'. The style held up for three weeks, and I received loads of compliments right up to the day I took it down. The price -- not inexpensive but fair; more or less what I've been paying anyway. The notable difference -- the final result. Thanks Nu Wave for restoring my love for my locs...I was about to chop them off! The only reason I'm rating them 4 instead of a 5 is because I've only been there one time.
