Simply the BEST.
Down home, zen feel, immaculately clean, great products, full of laughter, good people, good energy and folks who don't take themselves serious, but are serious about the business of managing your natural hair! I have been wearing locs for 15 years. As a flight physician, I've lived and traveled to many states and oversees for work, so I've had the unfortunate need to have many different hands in my locs trying to do my best to maintain them for this long. I found Sharene and Nu Wave two years ago and they've been FANTABULOUS! I live in L.A. now, but I fly back to Brooklyn just to get my NWKK fix on. They are worth it. Although, Sharene is my main stylist, all the ladies are artists and professionals, and after witnessing their work ethic, I'd trust any of them. Their patience and precision is impeccable. Every woman who walks out of the shop looks absolutely amazing. The little girls too, walking out with that extra kick of confidence, when you know your hair is TIGHT. Priceless. That's how your hair experience should be.
I could talk about every element of my experience, but I've decided to focus on what I care most about after 15 years of being "someone's client". These are what I look for in reviews in hopes that this may help others likeminded:
ATMOSPHERE - serene, attentive, relaxed, but in touch. Always a show on the tele that is lighthearted, but not too distracting. Like I said above, these are all professionals paying much attention to the details of your experience. Conversations are entertaining. I had the pleasure of watching the World Cup semi-finals here and it was better than any sports bar experience! Sharene was so forgiving as I was moving and cringing in my seat as my beloved Brazil took the beat down of their lives...
THE WASH- I love how they work together. If your stylist can't wash your hair themselves (oh yes, they do here), then you're in for an equal treat! I've had three different people so far (sorry, can't recall the names) and every wash has been pure bliss. No lie, they get in there, never miss a spot and always end with a scalp massage that will make you want to pay extra when you think that perfect wash was actually INCLUDED in your appointment. Also, don't worry about scorching under the dryer, because everyone is looking out to make sure you're comfortable and not forgotten. I personally have a love hate relationship with sitting under the dryer. I try to cheat as much as I can to get out of it, but they don't let me. They understand good things come with patience, but they make sure I'm comfortable and I really appreciate that.
WAIT TIME - 98% ON TIME. Let's be honest... how many of us our jet setters about getting to our appointments on time? But, when we do (and even when we're late) we expect immediate attention. Luckily, NWKK is the best by far I've experienced about getting you started and out on time whatever the situation is. I usually don't wait more than 15 min tops. Because of my crazy schedule, I've sometimes squeezed appointments in between flights and they really have gone out of their way to accommodate me. I wouldn't recommend this since you're cheating yourself from a wonderful zen experience, but still you are dealing with honest professionals here. So they only do what they can and won't commit to anything they cannot deliver. Much Respect.
EXPERTISE- These women KNOW natural hair. I love the education I get about my hair. Recently got highlights and love them! Also, like a fly on the wall, I benefit from hearing the advise they give others. What may be working, what I may want to try in the future, etc., You ask and they answer to the best they can. They often consult each other (teamwork, love it!). This says a lot about the salon because expertise is shared for the best interest of the client. They communicate in an honest and empowering manner. They are not out to make you feel bad (been there, didn't like that) or verbally execute your last stylist for what they did or did not do (not professional). My experience with Sharene has always made me feel optimistic about the journey, knowing that there's so much more I could do if I'm just patient, open and nurturing to not just my hair, but my whole self.
STYLES- they got them. For every age, occasion and personality. Enough said.
