It has been a two days since I called this salon, spoke with a stylist, Alicia. I needed help and fast, so I explained my dire situation. It was 11am and I was due at my friend's wedding and was having trouble with curl a long wig I just purchased. You see, I wear a caeser cut and have not curled hair, any hair. So I called asked if she would do it? She told me to come in the next 15 mins, I was there in 8. She tried to curl with a curling iron but she preferred to just roller set and put it under the dryer. Late last year, November I believe, I decided to celebrate my third year with Natural hair by straightening it by a stylist my relaxed friend recommended - you guys all know where this story is going. If you don't it goes "Hot hot hot comb, pass pass pass" If you still don't get it - My Hair was rendered lifeless with the use of a 400F plus hot comb that was passed along the same strands of hair like 5 times" My hair looked good - nice and straight. She even gave me a nice cut. It looked good but it didn't smell good a week later when I washed it. My hair smelt burnt every week I washed it for about 2 months and my ends were lifeless without any recoil. Sad, I began cutting off the pieces little by little, unfortunately for some strands I believe the whole shaft was damaged so as I chopped and as it grew you could still see lifelessness. "Okay", I said I'll just rock braids, twists and wigs until it grew out - Wrong! Fast forward 6 months - there was no point in holding on to dead hair and plus I missed rocking my fro. Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. I was desperate for a cut ASAP. I had no appointments but I decide to test my luck. So happy I found out about NUBIAN HAIR STUDIO in the Bronx! I have trekked to Long Island, Queens and Brooklyn continuously for years to get my hair done and now instead of waking up at the crack of dawn to be the first customer on a weekend after a long work week, I can now leisurely get out of bed and take a 10-15min ride to a hair salon that not only does natural hair but is also professional, knowledgeable and clean. I went to Nubian Hair Studio recently and had my hair done by the owner. She provided a free hair consultation, and was very thorough and professional in the questions and process of how she would shampoo, condition and style my hair. Just by having this open conversation had me hooked with the realization that this salon is unique in their approach and extremely knowledgeable about hair; be it in it's natural state, chemically treated or otherwise. In addition, I noticed that the other stylists had the same approach and hair care techniques so you can see that the staff is on the same page with their goals for each customer. First! I am a bit of a snob but also a low maintenance kind of girl. I have been growing out my hair after close to 40 years of keeping it "Low" lol. I saw many yelp reviews and decided to take a chance on a consultation, which was free!! I spoke with Alicia, the owner and she was lovely and we set up a consultation with NO PRESSURE. The salon is spacious, clean and quiet! I arrived and waited only a very short time before I met my stylist, Elaine. I went in not really thinking I would do anything but after consultation agreed to a steam moisturizer, cut and style. If you know me, you KNOW that they must have put me at ease. Such a great experience! I came across this gem of a salon when I wanted to install loc extensions. After almost giving up on finding a natural hair salon in the Bronx, I was surprised to discover Nubian Hair Studio within walking distance of my neighborhood in the Boogie Down. Ms. Felicia does is soooo attentive and puts emphasis on catering to her client's requests and needs. She is the only hairdresser/stylist that "gets me" and understands whatever I convey to her. These stylist are true experts within the field of natural haircare. They really know how to work with all types of hair textures and are willing to recommend styles and treatments if you are unsure about how to proceed with your hair's state. I came with a budget in mind of $40 for simple cornrows and a wash. I was quoted $35 and $25 if I wanted a trim. $25 to trim your ends is far too much. Most places in the Bronx charge $10 max for a trim. It's Black history month. They're a Black business why not give a lil more? $60 total. Great or....so I thought! I took out the $60 we agreed upon from the ATM nearby. I handed the money to the stylist she told me to wait till they were done to pay them. The stylist I had was experiencing personal family issues. She yelled on the phone while angrily doing my hair. NO APOLOGY! I understand we all have a personal life but why not do that in a staff room and have another person finish my hair? All of this scandalous behavior occurred for over an hour. NO APOLOGY! She stopped doing my hair to step away to yell at her family on the phone in front of everyone. She left the store for a short time in an angry huff while stomping in and out. UNPROFESSIONAL, SCARY AND SPREADS BAD ENERGY! I expected a wash, trim and simple cornrows to take 1.5-2 hours. It took 4 HOURS! I ended up missing an important health appointment and a job interview I had to go to afterward. NO APOLOGY! I asked for a simple addition to the cornrows. A simple row of individual braids. I was told that the braids were $65 and the trim wasn't actually $25 it was $30 PLUS taxes PLUS a 5% service fee. S C A M M E R S! So from wanting to spend $40, then I was quoted $60in the beginning. Next, I was surprised with $100+ quote at the end. She had locked the door several hours before closing their advertising closing time to force me to pay her the new increased SCAM price. WHY DONT YOU HAVE A PRICE LIST? WHY DONT THE STAFF COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER? S C A M A R T I S T S! The stylist explained she was actually doing me a favor by reducing it to $65 + tax. I lost out in a job interview and a health appointment due to her unprofessionalism, slowness and feuding with her family. She did not unlock the door for me to leave until I paid the cheated price she told me to pay. NO APOLOGY! Remember that $25-$30 trim? I still have split ends galore!! C H E A T S C U S T O M E R S ! The only salons that requires a tax that I've been to are high-end ones in Manhattan near 5th Ave, that serve you tea or wine while they service you. TAX AND A SERVICE FEE is highly abnormal for the Bronx ( one of the poorest districts in the entire United Staes). Not even a salon I've been to in SoHo has charged tax or a service fee. I haven't been to a salon in 10 years because I always went to the barbershop for my haircuts and always got VERY low cuts. So I was looking for a place that would care for my natural hair. I knew I needed a trim and I was afraid to go back to the barber because I wanted to grow out my hair and retain length. I got my hair cut by the owner, Alicia, and was pleased with the results. She took a look at my hair. Ask me what brought me there and what i wanted to do to it. I explained my situation and she let me know my hair is very dry and needs hydration. She sounded like she knew what she was talking about that I wanted to get my hair done right away! I booked an appointment for the next day early in the morning. She shampoo and deep conditioned my hair. My hair felt soft and MOISTURIZED! She lightly blew out my hair and trimmed a little. While doing my hair, Bianca spoke to me about things that are important in my hair journey such as a good leave in, mostuirzer and oil. I wanted comb coils, which she did with Entwine Naturalle Couture products. Coils look so neat that I did not want to unravel them for an event coming up. I was comfortable from the moment I walked into Nubian Hair Studio for my consultation and am glad i found this salon for I walked out with moisturized soft comb coils which i cannot wait to unravel. I spent $88.83 including tax. $65.00 for coils and $20.00 for reshaping my cut. It is expensive but it was worth it considering the care and the products they use. I accidentally came across Nubian Hair Studio on my way home from work. I met Alicia, she was very pleasant. I explained my issues with my hair. My hair is natural and Naturally GREY. I could not seem to get rid of the frizzy, spongy, droopy curls that don't last. Most importantly I was tire of twisting every night and getting the same effect. I was just about done with it. I got my hair done on Sunday, flat twist and whoa LA! I got Curls!! the frizz is gone, I got a lot of definition and I am on day 2 without doing a twist out. I also brought my niece along whom seem to be satisfied with her curl definition as well. However I was a little disappoint in with the time frame. Good day Yelpers. Here's my review of Nubian Hair Studio; First visit 2/16/14- I've worn my hair in box braids for almost a year and couldn't take it anymore. I removed the braids and couldn't do a thing with my natural hair. I considered pressing it, but the smell of 'cooked hair' disgusts me. So I turned to the internet and tried to find a salon in the Bronx that specializes in natural hair care, and could see me right away. After calling countless locations, sending dozens of text and emails to salons listed in the yellow pages and here on Yelp, I receive only one response. Nubian Hair Studio. When Victoria, the receptionist, called me to schedule my appointment, I said I need something done right away or I may have to go back to a relaxer. Thankfully, they were able to see me that same day. The atmosphere was very warm and inviting, and I had the opportunity to observe the stylist with other clients before any of them started on my hair. Throughout my search I gathered a few photos to show the stylist what I wanted. When my stylist, Princess, called me over to analyze my hair I showed her one of the photos I snagged of the internet. It was her!! I thought it was coils, but it was her natural curls. I was pleased when she told me my hair pattern was like hers, and could achieve that look. Well, after an absolutely incredible shampooing (yes, I could have sat in the chair and let her massage my scalp for hours), and a deep condition, she began to twist my hair. Princess explained to me that the owner, Alicia, would be taking over styling my hair. I was concerned because I can usually see the difference when two sets of hand have been in my head. Another concern for me was how quickly she was doing my twist. I had my hair twisted at another salon in the Bronx and ended up looking like I had alopecia there were so much exposed scalp. So I asked if that would be the case again. Alicia assured me that minimal scalp would be visible. When she finished I was completely thrilled with my hair!!!! Well that was Sunday 2/16/14. I found this salon by doing a google search & the few reviews that it had were positive. So I gave it a try. I made an appt for 10:30 am on Sunday & didn't do much waiting when I got there. Unfortunately I can only give this salon two stars for the following reasons: The Good - The receptionist was very professional both over the phone and in person and was able to give me a same day appointment that I was very happy about. The salon is clean and both me and my daughter liked the outcome of her style. The Bad - We had a 10am appointment and did not leave the salon until after 5pm need I say more!? Keep in mind this appointment was for a 6 year old. This honestly has to be the worse salon ever. I came here to avoid a trip to Harlem and to hopefully find a closer regular natural hair salon but it was a HUGE mistake. The Friday before NYE, they only had one worker and had several people scheduled with services like box braids. I had an appointment at 11:00 am and was not attended until 1:00 pm. After shampooing and getting a treatment, my time in the steamer ended around 2:00 pm, I had to wait an hour to get service again (my blower and braid down). When I got my braid down I wasn't even asked how I wanted the braids and I was so tired that I just could not argue. I left at 4:00 pm. This salon is a joke, and on top of all the waiting and after calling several times to ask about pricing for my service (shampoo, blow dry and braid down), we agreed on a price of $65 with a free steam conditioning treatment. They tried to charge me $81 (the steam treatment, taxes and the debit/credit card fee). I explained that we discussed pricing over the phone, and she agreed to waive the steam treatment cost (no duh). Then when she calculates my price she tells me it will be $70 with tax and cc service fee but when she swipes my card to charge me, it charged me $77, apparently, the iPad she uses charges an additional tax that the stylist wasn't aware of. (Hmm, I wonder how many other clients paid double tax?) I am so confused about this place, servicing natural or transitioning hair should not be this difficult. This place needs receptionist (to handle billing and who knows how to work the system, deal with pop-ins) and additional workers or an assistant that does not get booked but assists with easy jobs like shampooing (available every day). Avoid this place its not worth you time or money. If I could do it again, I would take my 10-minute train ride to Harlem for quality and timely service. read more

Pandora plays softly in the background with songs from Bob Marley to emeli sande which gives the salon some flavor while providing a sense of tranquility. Marcelle was my stylist and she was awesome. She saw my interest and explained every step she was doing. She used Entwine products in my hair and explain the benefits of it. I came out of the salon educated, relaxed, and beautiful. My husband said it was the best he had ever seen my hair. - This was in November. I went back in 12/30/2013 and the same thing. No complaints. Bianca did my comb coils after a great wash and deep condition. Clean well lit beautiful sky light. What I liked: Well I can only speak to Bianca she was attentive professional, courteous. She didn't keep me waiting and my hair looked cute. She did a two strand flat twist with a rod set on a transitioning natural, when I arrived (i was 45 minutes early) She was doing a TCB re-touch on a tween and did a roller set. Got my starter locs done here for my bday. I had them interlocked but it was done improperly. My locs don't look uniform and I have gaps in my locs. Now I'm going to a salon in bk to have it completely redone for half the price. I paid over $300. Luckily I was told that I could have them redone since I was about to just cut my hair off. Gave an extra star because she seemed nice just wasn't experienced imo with interlocking. read more

Well after probably 23 years of NOT letting a black salon cut my hair, I broke my streak. And I'm paying heavily. My hair was slightly past my shoulders CURLY and dry. After waiting for quite some time, the stylist blew out my hair. She asked if I minded and inch to an inch and a half coming off. I said no problem. The hair I saw falling wasn't bad. I'm not really anal so I wasn't stressing it. As she was twisting my hair there was a lot of pulling. But she seemed like she sincerely cared, but maybe just wasn't used to twisting/braiding hair. After an eternity in the chair, I was finally done. It didn't look like Khamit Kinks, but it was pretty. So I take my hair down last night and realize this woman cut about 3-4 inches of my hair off. I'm really not a girl who stresses my hair. But this has me enraged! I've been victimized by the scissor happy stylist. I've had my hair trimmed at Ouidad for a pretty penny. Never, have I ever come out looking like this. A word of advice. If your stylist is wearing a wig, tell her to take that sucker off and show you her hair before she cuts yours! If she has hair, she'll respect yours! The end! And back to Ouidad I go for my hair maintenance! read more

I came to this salon at the end of August to get an updo done for a wedding. My experience was great from the first phone call to book the appointment. We were in communication via email (sending hair photos) to agree on style and pricing. Once at the salon I received wonderful service and advice on different methods I could use keep my hair healthy. Lastly, the updo style came out perfectly and the bride was very happy with the look on the wedding day! The women who work here give off this energy where I felt like they LOVE natural hair and are committed to making everyone feel beautiful in their style of choice. Don't waste your money and go here. The girl washed my hair and didn't even know how to wash and detangle natural hair. I would definitely expect a natural hair salon to know how to do that. I was pissed and they clearly saw and she started saying stuff about me to the other hairdresser thinking that I did not see her in the mirror pointing at me and talking under her breath to the other hairdresser. That was so rude. I asked for a wash and a trim and they charged me 57 dollars plus tax. That's the first time that I went to a hair salon and they charged tax. That's ridiculous. I think that 57 dollars is a lot of money for a wash and trim. I should have just washed my hair myself at my house instead of going to this place. Smh. I would never go here again. Everyone save your money and do your hair yourself or go to Brooklyn to the other natural hair salons there. read more

I had a scheduled appt at 3pm on a beautiful Sunday. My Aunt and I arrived an hour early. I live about an Hour + away. I was prepared to wait until my appt time arrived with food and patience. Alicia was very friendly and explained she was running behind. She was the only stylist that day.There was also a Young lady shampooing. The place was spacious and clean. To get to my concerns I will FWD.. My BIGGEST Pet peeve is if I have an Appt I Make sure I'm on time out of respect for Your time please have the same respect for MY time. Call your Clients let them know I would have loved to enjoy my day OUTSIDE of that shop. I dont expect to be 4 hours in and my hair is not finished. I have a Tapered Cut and wanted a twist out. I ended up leaving without getting styled and leaving the twists in. By 7:30 I will be headed home and going to bed so I said I will take it out in am. The Bill was More than I would like and was so over it. I feel like I was given a conditioner to stall for time and wasnt really told want they were doing. I've been to many salons this is only my second natural place on this Journey. But Ask ur Clients..Recomm treatments dont just do it and expect them to pay.. The Stylist didnt even touch my hair to see if I needed it. So I was disappointed with my visit. I wanted to find a Natural Salon but both experiences have been very $$$$ and disappointing.. read more
