Based on an exuberant recommendation from neighbors, we gave Number 1 Wok a go -- and my reaction is NO. Maybe. Maybe? Well, Mongolian Beef was pretty good. Everything else, perhaps 1.75 on a scale of 5. So my intent is to give 'em a second try with a totally different order. -- Soup: egg drop wonton was devoid of taste. The wontons may be a tad better than other local takeouts. But not by much. Hot & sour was too peppery, with a thin base. -- Roast pork chow mein: blah! Salt, soy sauce, nothing much helped. I'm the first to admit that chow mein is a pretty mild dish under the best of circumstances, but this takes "mild" to a different level. Prices are higher than other take-outs. I've gone here for more than 10 years. Typically the food is reasonable, but always on time. Last night was the last night. Called in our usually order. Ready in 15 min. Got there in about 20 min. 20 minutes later, not ready. 20 more minutes not ready. Remember they require you pay when you come in. Main dish was so-so Hawaii 5-0. Kind of bland.Got a big wad of fatty meat. Rice was overcooked, and wantons in the soup were undercooked. The thick part wrapped around the meat center was raw dough. The best part of my $32 meal was the soup broth. Chicken wings were a little dry and could have used more seasoning. $2 each (i got the appetizer size which was 4 wings for $8. I ordered Chicken chow mein and I received chicken chop suey ... my husband's order of General Tso's chicken was correct. Both entrees were okay. We initially tried to order on the phone, and when the person who answered the phone said "know our address?" I responded with "on Palm Beach and Babcock Ranch"; she said "no" and hung up. Rude. My husband wanted to give it a try. Our order was from the "lunch special" which came with char su fried rice, the rice was hard and dry with about 6 mini pieces of bbq pork and a handful of peas. I just stumbled across this place completely by chance and boy did I strike gold here. I was halfway up to bonita springs when I realized the place I was going was closed on Sunday. No worries, I pop out the old cell phone & look for other places nearby. I looked at a number of places, but nothing really caught my eye. Then I came across this place. Its 3 star average had me leery, but as I looked at the reviews, almost everyone said the food itself was quite good, but they had issues with service or the hours or whatever. There weren't any pictures of the food, so I said f*ck it, number 1 wok here I come. When I got back to my car with the bag, I noted that the food smelled "right," so I was excited to get home & try it. Well, once home, I opened the boxes and realized I'd hit the jackpot here. Everything was fantastic. Prior to this place, I thought nowhere in the state would be able to compete with First Wok in Gainesville because that place is awesome. I won't say this place is better, but it is in the discussion which puts it into rarified air. My wife thinks this place has better general tso. I would call it a draw. First wok has my favorite boneless spare ribs in the country, but this place holds its own even with those other ribs. I believe their lol mein is better than first wok as are their egg rolls. Chinese takeout is my favorite kind of food, so I fully anticipate that me & the staff will be on a first name basis quite soon. Superb & worth every star! read more

The cleanest Chinese food in the entire area. I got some food at a small place on 41 in a little plaza on 41 and Grace, I was burping acid almost half the night from the grease. This place is closer to us, but on that night it was already closed, so I ventured away, but now that I have tried it, it's my favorite, so far. The wonton egg drop soup was actually clear and the wontons were delicious, the other place the soup was murky and all I tasted was grease, blah. Never again. This will be my go to for my Asian cravings for now. I love trying new places so I will try others, but when I want a "sure thing" I will definitely head to #1 wok by publix :) read more

We have ordered from here many times. Today when we went to pick our order there were 2 young boys (maybe 8 and 4) yelling and cursing in the restaurant area. They were most likely the owners kids. We all have to work and balance home life buy these kids were ridiculous. No one adult came out from the back to stop them from yelling or cursing. A really unwelcome environment for anyone else, and an unfortunate example of neglect of your kids. Probably won't bother coming back. We've eaten takeout here three times and haven't been pleased. Each time we said "maybe it will be better this time". But three strikes and you're out. General Tao chicken was basically unusable chicken parts covered in batter which was then covered in sauce. I couldn't even eat it because it was just like chewing gristle. Husband's Egg foo yung was gross tasting and so was chicken with broccoli. The egg roll hardly had any filling inside. Basically just egg roll dough. Keep in mind we have ordered Chinese takeout food many times over the years at different restaurants, so we know what we like and what we don't like. This place seems to use the cheapest cuts of meat and products. I only gave it one star because the portions are large for the price, their steamed rice is good, and their spring rolls are good. This place used to be good especially the young chow fried rice. They either have new cooks or new mgr. I ordered beef w/cashew nuts it was terrible, tasted like cardboard. I took it back they refused to exchange it or give another choice. I asked for something else, wad charged full price. While waiting asked for a soda they told me $1.17. I had $1.15 ,they refused to give me the soda cause I was 2 cents short. Dont know whos cooking now, sure wouldnt be coming there anymore. read more

Ehh. The white rice is good. The flavors are just odd to me. The sesame chicken is sweet, I'm used to a spicier style. The plum sauce isn't as tangy as it should be. This is my go to Chinese place now. It's so cheap and so good. Their large wonton soup is so good and not even $3. The egg rolls are BIG and so fresh and have so much flavor it's amazing. heartbroken. we have ordered from this place for over three years- because the food IS good, but tonight was the last straw. Once before the employees demanded that we pay for food we didnt order-or we could never return- the little woman was so irate and aggressive that we didnt return for over two years. We returned after that time just to see if management had changed and we were happy to rely on them again. This time they messed up an order that we call in every month, and when we called to explain- we were told it was our fault. (seriously??) I personally walked in and quietly explained to the young man that from now on- they should post a disclaimer reminding customers that "if the restaurant messes up the order, it will be customer fault". My fortune cookie read "Good food is worth waiting for!" The hot and sour soup was flavorful and so was the Taichien chicken and Moo Shoo. Portions were large and not overloaded with broccoli. The place was mobbed with people carrying out as this is the best chinese food around. I had called ahead and arrived after 30 minutes as instructed, but had to wait for 30 more minutes for the food - along with 15 others. So I can understand why the cashier was not friendly as she steadily and quickly processed orders. A regular told me it normally takes only 10 minutes total. "Asian Face Saving". Ordered takeout to pick up on way home from work. Restaurant 10+ miles from home. Despite verbal confirmation of correct order at counter, 1 of 2 dishes was wrong when opened at home, Szechuan chicken instead of black bean chicken. Cannot eat spicy food due to mouth condition with inflamed gums. Noted that receipt actually had wrong item followed by correction to correct item. When contacted about the error merchant was very rude, denied any mistakes, wanted us to come back although it was too far and a toll away, implied I was lying despite error on their own receipt and hung up the phone when I asked for a refund. This behavior is not acceptable in USA culture. When you make a mistake, admit to it! Please don't reward this behavior and purchase your Chinese food elsewhere. 2nd dish of Szechuan pork was bland, anyway. I recommend nearby Sakura, Shanghai or China Wok. read more
