Number 4 is by far the best restaurant in the city of Mankato. I am a New Yorker and ate here 2 times while on tour passing through. Waited 45 minutes for a table when we were told it wouldn't be too long of a wait. They were a little busy seating groups that had reservations which is understandable, but if that was the case just be honest about the wait time. The management appeared to do little to nothing besides stand by the host station and stare at the seating chart. At many times there was three people trying to figure out seating. Our server was way too pushy with appetizers and add-ons. You can suggest something once or maybe even twice, but when you ask three different times if we want something to start with after we said no each time before it gets annoying. The food was not great. The prices and decor would make you think it would be. I had the prime rib sandwich which was basically a meager portion of thin shavings of dried out beef roast. The sauce was good but only covered 1/4 of the sandwich. The truffle fries were decent, but the dipping sauce was just ketchup. If you're going to take the time to do truffle fries wouldn't you want to accent them with a unique sauce. We ordered the garlic aioli for an extra $0.50 and used that. Very tasty. In the end, I probably wouldn't give them another try. Plenty of places that offer unique food that actually tastes good for a decent price. read more

Made reservations, they couldn't seat us for over 1 hour after our reservation time. There was no applogy, no manager stopped by to explain. The 2 of us ordered different fish dishes and both were severly overdone. The halibut was cooked so hard it was even hard to cut, and was not worth eating. It's sad to see a beautiful piece of fish ruined by either neglect or lack of skill, or both. The waitress was pleasant but didn't seemed concerned. It must be normal to wait forever and then be dissatisfied. No discount, no applogy for the most overpriced and worst meal I've had in a while. I love this place! The first time I ate lunch at Number 4 I had one of the best burgers I've ever eaten, cooked medium rare, as per my request. It was perfection on a bun with fresh avocado! Tonight I ordered two items from the Happy Hour menu: the Mahi Tacos and the Szechuan Green Beans. I was thrilled with both my choices. The tacos were a perfect combination of fish and vegetables on 3 soft corn tortillas. The green beans were cooked, al dente, neither over nor underdone. My wife enjoys her steak well done, as crazy as that sounds. Our server refused to let us order it that way and we compromised on medium. I know it's crazy but my wife knows she can only eat steak when there's little to no pink. After requesting this and having to beg our server (forgetting her name) to allow us to have it done this way, our steak came out completely pink and raw. It was frustrating. I enjoyed my steak however since I like it pink but it was our anniversary so I was sad for her. Mashed potatoes and drinks were good. The food is decent, which is high praise from an ex-pat San Franciscan. I had the gouda burger. At first the BBC saucecwasvoverwhelming, then it was well balanced, then there was not enough. Desert was bread pudding with vanilla bean gelato (my substitution). The bread was dry, but that's standard for bread pudding. The gelato was nummy. The service wad good. I don't drink alcohol which y urns me into a dreaded water drinker most places. The water was good but could do with less ice ending up in the glass. Music has been mid-nineties folk rock, which has been neither distracting nor annoying. We'll be eating here again. read more

Driving by Mankato needed to stop for lunch. Drove by and stopped in and decided to eat. I ordered the coconut crusted chicken salad with spring mix greens and sliced red onions and mandarin oranges with sliced strawberries. It came with honey Dijon dressing which I was hesitant about but it turned out to be a great fit. It was awesome! Great visual presentation and wonderful compliment of flavors. We were looking forward to a very nice night out in Mankato last weekend. This restaurant was recommended by locals. The atmosphere was very nice. We ordered a glass of house Cabernet with dinner. The waitress advised we order a bottle of wine if we thought we would drink more than one glass. Initially, we said no but she said we could cork the bottle and bring home what we did not finish. . We did not ask to see the wine menu but thought she understood we were just looking for a house Cabernet. . Unfortunately, when we received the bill, we found the bottle of wine cost over $100. Went here for a first date last night and couldn't have had a better experience! Food was great and steak was cooked to my liking. Staff was super friendly and went above and beyond expectations. We pulled off the highway after reading yelp reviews . We were in search of local fish and chips. We were seated and placed our order for guacamole and chips and the F&C. The guac was prepared table side and delicious . The F&C arrived .. the pieces were breaded in a crispy cornmeal but the fish was very thin :/ , I actually peeled some breading off to taste the fish . One of my favorite places to go when I visit my family in the Mankato area. From the moment you walk in, you can tell that you're going to have a quality experience. You walk past a flickering gas fireplace and into a room drenched in deep reds and warm, low lighting. The menu features something for just about everyone, no matter your taste. The last thing I had was the Number 4 Burger and it was juicy and flavorful. The fries were great too. The cocktails are wonderful (last I had was the Dragon Burst). Finally, the service is always wonderful. The servers and bartenders all seem like they're happy to be there and make you feel like they have nothing better to do than but to make your time at Number 4 happy. I live in Chicago now. The level of expectation in a Chicago restaurant is different than what I'd have in Mankato. Number 4 has a level of sophistication that would fit in in the Chicago restaurant scene...with that added touch of genuine Minnesota Nice. STRONGLY RECOMMENDED!!!! read more

We had a great time at #4. Beer list was pretty good...a nice mix of small breweries. The food was good. My only critique was there was no subtlety in any of the food, all the flavors were big, I would say a little too big. For instance the home made tater tots were good...a really good homemade tot would be awesome....the garlic, onion, and truffle flavors were too strong. Same with my black and bleu steak, steak was good, there was some targon (maybe thyme) in the sauce and there was just too much of it. read more

We had been to Number 4 once a few years ago, and decided to go back. Had a quiet dinner there on 7/12/2019. Friday night, 7:30pm but no wait. The ribs had a distinct Smoky flavor we had not experienced before. Very good. We also had the 4-cheese penne pasta, also good. We brought leftovers home of both. The highlight was the chocolate cake. Huge piece ... definitely enough for two people (and we brought some of this home, too.). Service was good ... like you would expect at an upscale restaurant like Number 4. We'll go back again read more

Traveling through town with the Mrs, looking for some good eats - very happy yelp sent us here. Originally the search was for a good burger and bloody mary at a solid dive bar, but a previous reviewer's photo of the weekender bloody steered us here. I had a Big 4 burger and she had the short pants (veggie), both wonderful. It was more $ than planned for a Saturday afternoon, but my no means am I complaining - quality food done right. Would love to come back with couples later in the evening as it seems slightly more geared for a nice dinner. No white table cloths, but nice walnut tables, hightops & booths. Server (Maggie) did a nice job of recommending other spots in the area (including some not owned by the same owners).
