I bought a hibiscus that turns from yellow to vermillion and is gigantic. For $15. It's easy to find and had a steady stream of visitors but we were masks even if we were outdoors. There's a book with.pictures of the flowers in bloom to help you choose. I bought one to see if it would survive me, and after the first flower bloomed I had a few leaves yellow and drop but now it has a half dozen buds so waiting eagerly to see them bloom. I kept it in the pot till I decide where it will do best. I would recommend here for buying plants for your own garden.

A nice church lady mentioned to me that she used to buy poinsettia plants at Mariner's Cove many years ago - and this nursery had good prices! I used my Yelp app and searched Hawaii Kai for nurseries. I called Charles Nii Nursery, but they had closed in July 2025. I called Nii R & S Nursery. Their recording stated that they would be closing today at noon. We hurried over to that side of the island. Nii R & S Nursery wasn't too difficult to find. We parked in the front, but the worker told us to drive up the road to the end where the office is. Yes... it was a relatively long road with potholes and some unpaved stretches. There was a woman (Judy) who directed us to turn left towards the poinsettia plants... wow... there were a lot! The tall plants were $9 and the shorter ones were $7. Today, they were all $1 off! Tax included! After we selected our plants, Judy offered us wrappers (50 cents each) for the pots: gold, red, or green. We picked gold. Our plants looked great! They're healthy and sturdy! We hope they will last a long time! Note: Charles Niu Nursery is the cousin of this business!

This is their niche which has allowed them to successfully survive against foreign, lower cost producers. Sadly, the nursery has condensed in size but is very organized and well kept. This makes it easier to control for pests and therefore agriculturally approved for shipping to the mainland or elsewhere. Harry and Roy have a variety of hybridized dendrobiums and cattleyas, thus if you're a connoisseur or just looking for that unique plant, this is your place. The two are so knowledgeable and are well known in the Orchid forums. Excellent speakers who always have a good story....check them out!

He detailed the care and unusual nature of the types of orchids cultivated. He generously offered to send some. I was so excited to actually see them in person: It was such a loving gesture. The orchids live in Hawaii and we live near San Francisco so I was concerned about shipping. I didn't need to be: The orchids arrived promptly very carefully packaged with cotton batting to protect the blooms. The variety was breathtaking from delicate tiny green buds (later blossoming to white bouquets) to vivid purple orchids. As I learned, the orchids are unique hybrids and it shows in their wonderful displays. They are adorning my kitchen. My husband has been sick with a terminal illness and they brightened up both our home and our spirits. Thank you H + R Nurseries!

The gentlemen that was there helped us pick it out and was very clear on the fact that we didn't want the smaller more common flower tree. We paid a pretty penny extra for this rare variety. It's been a year, it has finally blossomed and low and behold, to much of our disappointment it's the standard sized flower variety. I called the nursery and the guy I spoke too wasn't even remotely apologetic nor did he give any kind of option to remedy the problem. Just kept saying "I don't know, I don't know." And I'm like no I'm trying to tell you you guys sold us the wrong puakenikeni and you should make good bc we give you lots of business. I am a frequent plant nursery shopper. We landscaped and installed an irrigation system for our entire backyard and purchased all our plants and trees from nurseries in Waimanalo. I put my trust in the people who work at the nurseries that they are knowledgable and trustworthy when we ask them to pull plants for us. I have had this problem before with another nursery when they were supposed to pull 5 of the same heliconia variety and we ended up with 4 different types of heliconia, but when I called them and showed pictures they were so apologetic and credited us for new plants and we were able to get new ones. I am very disappointed in Akamai Nursery and hoped they would make good on their mistake, but nope. We have spent almost $1000 there and going forward I will take my business elsewhere. If you are like me and just want to have your garden or landscaping done now and don't want to wait years for the plants to grow to make your place look nice then this is the place you need to come. They literally have acres of land that one of the workers can either drive you around or they will bring the plants up to you. We were fortunate to have the owner take us around. We showed him some pictures of the plants we were looking for and he knew exactly where they were and drove us to look at the plants and to pick which ones we wanted. To some the plants maybe on the high side but you are paying for the years they had to take care of the plants to get to that stage of maturity. They also have young plants as well and they are very price competitive. As always do your homework on which plants you are looking for and hopefully you have the names and pictures to show them. We will be back for sure for all our garden and landscaping needs.

It's in a neighborhood so please be mindful and respectful of the area and where you are parking. Paula is super helpful and extremely nice, she wanted to help me find the plants my heart desired. Talking to her was such a treat, you can tell she enjoyed her plants and nursery. Looks like she is open on weekends 10am - 4pm. I was looking for some plants to take back to California with me and since it needs to be soil-less I had to make sure I was able to take the cuttings of the plant. Paula had a bunch I wanted to take back as her prices are extremely fair. I don't know about you guys but these days it's hard to come by plants where it's not completely overpriced. I was able to grab a couple hoyas and hopefully they survive the plane ride back! Thanks again Paula for the sweet plants, I'll be back for sure!

Late post...2-3 weeks ago…read more Upon arrival, we were greeted by a nice person (sorry I forgot her name) she was really nice. I went there for pink tuberose (pink) and they had lots! There was a few with flower buds on them and most did not have. I did get the two that had and a couple of the ones that didn't. At present time, this is what I discovered tonight (too excited to wait until there's sun to take this pic)..... I wish the world can smell this!
