Seven months earlier, mom, with a family history of weak kidneys, was in renal failure. She refused to eat and was in pain. Johanna, through her awesome diversion tactics, distracted Mom to the point that she opened her month and ingested whatever went into it. This went in for weeks. Her kidneys eventually started to come back! Mom, being a bit demented, thought she owned the place. One morning, she found everyone still sleeping, and complained, "This is not right. How can I run the place when everyone is sleeping?" She always kept an eye at meal time, making sure everyone was fed. She also worried that we couldn't afford to feed the crowd since she owned the place. This attests to her sense of belonging. Hale Malamalama is very well run. Everyone of our relatives who visited commented on the cleanliness and absence of odor typically found in nursing homes. The atmosphere is collegial and the team spirit among the many crew brightened our spirits, even in stressful times. Kudos to all. Lea Anne and Joseph

I am so humbly grateful to the staff of Hale Malamalama for their skilled professionals that took care of my mother in-law. The facility is very clean. The staff are very accommodating for our various requests we asked for. It was also nice to take my mother in-law outdoors to sit and watch the ocean. Also to be able to have our family come and do potluck lunches with her at the facility.

Adam showed us around and we understand the type of care and quality that The Ivy can provide. This community is going through a renovation so we didn't see everything which we were fine with. At this point in time we don't live in Hawaii but are considering returning and knowing our options upon returning made us feel at ease. Upon returning on another vacation we plan to take another tour to see the complete renovation. Thank you Adam for the tour. You answered all of our concerns.

This is a review for the food, eaten as a guest of residents living at the institution/facility…read more The food was inedible. It was listed as a "Moroccon vegetable tagine, with chickpeas and sweet potatoes". What arrived was a plate with a messy slop of brown food, more akin to a dried-out casserole. This was the only vegetarian option. It tasted like a bland chili, over-flavored with cinnamon. The components tasted like they had been cooked separately, and then combined into whatever the brown, flour-laden sauce was. For a main entree, it was completely inadequate in terms of protein. It was served without any rice/garnish. Really just incredibly sloppy. Worse than a cheap cafeteria experience. I did not eat the dish after 3 small spoonfuls. Coffee served after the meal was like mud. There was only half-n-half on the table, but milk was able to be ordered. One positive note: The server who attended to our table was absolutely outstanding. She was accommodating, very pleasant, patient, and no request was a problem or too much. Her name was Kharolina--I hope The Ivy recognizes what an amazing member of the team she is. The menu 'reads well' ... but what is listed bears little resemblance to what is actually served.

The only drawback I see is driving up the winding and steep hills of Sierra Drive and Wilhelmina Rise. You will, however be rewarded with million dollar views that you can take in and appreciate. They have quite a good amount of programs that everyone can participate in. Of all the facilities that were presented to us, we chose Maunalani. Maunalani was the right choice to get my elderly Mom back on her feet again.

The regular menu rotates from week to week but there are other options, depending on the residents dietary requirements and restrictions, that the staff would provide at meal times and in between such as sandwiches pizza, samin etc. There's always a green salad and fresh fruit which is a nice change from hospital style food. Depending on the person's requirements you are also able to bring in outside food, treats, and goodies. The dining room is spectacular. As a non-profit organization they will not milk your insurance company dry before they discharge your friend or family member. The objective of this facility is to rehabilitate people in a healthy, friendly, loving and professional manner. Physical therapy and occupational therapy is offered daily. There are many social activities including religious, games,.exercise music and entertaient, animal interaction and the list goes on. The views are spectacular and the many lanais offer fresh air and sunshine. Our discharge interview was thorough and informational involving many departments of this facility. Big shout out to Karl, Meaghan, Brinh, Manny, "Nikki", Lauren and oh so many others
