I decided to get a blow out here yesterday due to the Economic blackout and wanted to support the students and the school versus spending money at a larger salon for a blow out. Keeping in the spirit of supporting the school and the students I am giving four stars but I do think there are a few things that would be good for people to know ahead of time if you are planning on coming here. First the good. You can't beat the prices but you definitely get what you pay for. They use amazing, high quality, and phenomenal smelling Aveda products and I found the hair washing and mini facial experience super relaxing. My student was super sweet as well as the one that helped her. However, the entire process took over three hours which I did not anticipate and ended up looking nothing like the picture I showed. It's not to say it looked bad. They were all saying how pretty it looked, although I asked for loose waves and result was almost a 40's style pin curl look that is just so not me. Some constructive feedback if this is read, although I'm not a hairstylist by any means, Is that because my hair is curly, frizzy, and textured, if you wait until it's too dry to blow dry it, it will be hard to get the frizz out. You need to put the product in when it's wet, and blow it dry. This does not seem to be an option here, because the students have to have their supervisors check to make sure they washed their clients hair properly. Also, to get loose beach waves with a flat iron, you use bigger pieces of hair and it doesn't take near as long and it doesn't end up so curly and puffy. To get the ends flat like I requested, instead of wrapping the end, you flick your wrist let go a bit, and pull at the end. I wanted to say this during the service but I know they are working long hours and just doing their best. I'm a little conflicted on even writing this, but I don't think I was asking for anything complicated. I did not expect the quality to be as good as the more expensive chains but I guess I thought it would be better than my own abilities since I lack professional training. Maybe I'm taking my own skills and other hairstylists for granted idk. I was able to just take a quick shower when I got home and redo it, but I don't think I would chance a color or cut because it's not such an easy fix if you get someone inexperienced in that area. I also could not imagine spending any more than three hours there. This is a great place if you have the time, are on a budget and aren't too picky about your hair. It is an also wonderful way to support students and help them learn. It's just not for me, as my child free time off work is limited. It may also be helpful to put estimated times on the service menus to help potential clients gage expectations prior to booking. read more

Horrible since purchased by the new company. Prices went up on memberships, dirty laundry litters the hallways, whole salon and spa is dirtier, no longer able to book appointments online. The change is just heart breaking. I can't even imagine how bad the instruction for the students must have gotten. Never Again. I have been a customer of Aveda Salons for 20 years at multiple locations in and around Columbus, OH; as well as other states. I have always supported salon schools. Yesterday's visit was the first time I left with my hair looking worse than when I went in; due to the students (and instructors) arrogance, ignorance, and inexperience. (there were two twenty-something African-American women working on my hair, and 3 instructors who argued with me. I am a middle-aged white woman). I called and requested a simple highlight (minimum amount of foils) and a cut. I was scheduled for a partial (more foils) and a cut. I came in with highlights that were growing out. I wanted a simple highlight to match, to tone the brassiness, and a cut to get rid of the dead ends. When I arrived, the 2 stylists pulled up a picture of what THEY thought I should have done. I said NO, that's not what I want. I explained what I DID want. (A service I have been getting with zero issues for many years, which, should be well-documented in the Aveda records) During the consultation, they called the instructor over. I explained that I did not want what they were suggesting. I told the instructor what I DID want, which was face-framing highlights, a cut which would allow me to keep length but get rid of the dead ends, and a toner that would reduce the brassiness of the highlights. The instructor insisted that I allow THEM to move forward with THEIR plan, as flawed and ill-informed as it was. Despite the fact that it was not going to give me the result I wanted. They insisted that I would get the result I wanted, that they knew better than I did. I told them, no, your plan isn't going to do that. Then, an entire team of instructors proceeded to argue with me about why I was wrong. They called me "argumentative" and "cold". I was not wrong, they were. Not only were they wrong, but I genuinely got a kick out of the "I told you so" moment when the appointment was over, and they got to see the result of their terrible decision-making. The result? My hair is green. And it's a foot shorter than when I went in. They decided they needed to "add lowlights" to "help the regrowth blend in" and insisted on "baby lights" (the finest weave) for the highlight. They ignored the FACT that a warm blonde cannot be colored over (using an ash demi). The highlights? Not visible, as I pointed out before we began; due to their insistence on using a technique that I said I did not want. The cut is awful. Really, I have never had a worse cut. It's blunt, choppy. No blending whatsoever. They obviously are not teaching, nor making any attempt to master the basics. Also, the floors were dirty. The stations were a mess. This was the first time I had ever witnessed such a thing at a salon. I will never return (after I make them fix this). Not only that, I will encourage you not to go either. Go to Paul Mitchell. Go to Penzones. Go anywhere else. But.... DO NOT go to Aveda. Somehow, they have forgotten. I am the paying customer. I am the one who can take my business elsewhere. And I will. There's theory, and then there's practice. They are all theory, and no practice. Oh, the "stylist" asked if I had children. She asked what my birthday was. Completely inappropriate, not professional. Lindsay, on 12./4/25, did an amazing job with my partial highlight and it is still amazing almost 6 weeks later. What's more, she was very careful to protect my hair as much as possible. I specifically requested a 4th year student. They didn't have any but didn't tell me until I was already there. From the start, communication was frustrating. The staff seemed annoyed when I tried to explain what I wanted. The student assigned to me was called Ali. She was incredibly slow and clumsy, constantly dropping things and struggling to follow even basic instructions from the teacher like how to point cut. I had come in with freshly washed hair but they made me wash it again, this time with boiling hot water. They told me the haircut and highlights would take about 4.5 hours total. Instead, it took 3.5 hours for her to barely cut my hair. I could have done better myself. Then they suddenly remembered they needed to do a strand test for the highlights which took another 1.5 hours. I had to tell them they could do the haircut during the test, which should be common sense. In the end, they said they couldn't do the highlights that day because they wouldn't have enough time, even though my appointment was booked for that exact service. To top it off, when it came time to style my hair, I asked them not to use too much product because it was making my hair greasy. They ignored me, poured on the product, and left my bob looking oily and weighed down. That style took another 45 minutes for short hair. And I was still charged $7 for this disaster. I also asked the girl what type of hair does she think I have, she said a 3A. I have 1C! The fact that she goes to beauty school is surprising. In the end, this was bare minimum effort, extremely poor time management, and a waste of my day. I left feeling like I had paid for a bad haircut and a ton of frustration. Never again. read more

My hairstylist at Aveda is graduating in 2 weeks and couldn't do layers to save her life. Somehow they look like a mullet. Got it fixed at a GREAT CLIPS for cheaper. The hairdresser there laughed at my cut and pulled other employees over to look at how bad my layers were. I was laughing too, just so bad. Overall aveda is a good concept, just keep expectations in check. In other news, the great clips in grandview is wonderful. read more

They will generally let you choose the student you want to perform your service but will not let you choose the instructor you want as the supervisor; and the supervisors are not all equally talented. The instructor you happen to have makes such a difference in the quality of the service you will receive there. I want to support the training of the students but do not think I should have to assume such a risk on the talent of the instructor that is responsible for supervising the student. read more

I had an appointment here in June for Shampoo and conditioner. Service was great, wash was great, student was great. Made an appointment for a gel manicure and spa pedicure. When I made the appointment I was not told that if I already had gel polish on from somewhere else that it needed to be off. I could not get a manicure. So on to the Pedicure. the student was very nice and friendly. I dont think they are teaching how to do a real pedicure. I paid 32.00 for a foot massage. Didn't get polish because the colors offered are for Non Black women. I am very dark and the polish was not suitable for me. I only pay 37.00 for a pedicure from a Nail Salon. I was shocked by the price especially since this is a school. RECAP: I paid 32.00 for a foot massage. When I left I had to go to a nail salon to get a true pedicure. read more

This was my second time going to aveda and by far the worst haircut I have ever received. I initially went in wanting just a trim and bang trim to my long thick hair. Left with choppy and short layers and appears like she took half my hair with her. She talked me into lots of layer and showed me the length of them which ended up being wayyyy shorter than what I wanted. The worst part was I said they appeared a lot shorter than what I wanted and she said should I stop as she already had cut half my head by this point. I was telling myself to trust the process but it was awful. Cried all the way home from the appointment. read more

24 November 2017. Friday. I like Aveda because I am on a budget and coming here allows me to get my hair done without breaking the bank. What sucks about coming here is that when your favourite student graduates, you have to either hunt for another favourable student or get your hair done by someone else. I got a wash and style (with a flat iron) this morning - basically, a shampoo and thermal blowout). The student who did my hair was new so I gave her the benefit of the doubt. After taking forever to blowdry my hair and not really flat ironing it well, I left after 2.5 hours. With the previous senior student who did my hair before, I would normally be out of there in 1hr and 30 mins. My hair is short so it doesn't take a long time to blowdry it but for some reason, this new student took such small strands and blowed my hair out bit by bit (piece by piece). I'm not complaining but I wish things would have been different because I asked the student to add a style as she flat ironed my hair but the whole look of my hair came out just "BLAH". Okay, maybe I was frustrated while there but at the end of the day, I got a shampoo, conditioner, blowdry, and flat iton for $24 - this price included the 20% off coupon that I was in my email). This student is still learning so I get it. P.S. This Aveda location (on high street) in addition to the other one down the street (on Neil Ave.) is closing and moving to Bethel Road. Apparently, OSU bought this location out from Aveda so that they can build more student apartments. read more

It was so fun going here! I had Casey and I was served right away. She washed my hair with the most amazing smelling products. She was assisted by an instructor (Brittany) and they were both super sweet. They took all of my requests and kept asking how I liked it and if I wanted anything changed. There is no way to tip the students because all tips go to charity. As much as I love being able to donate to charity that easily, I wish there was a way to tip. I loved all the products they used so I will be looking into buying some. All in all I definitely recommend Aveda! read more

Umm why have I lived in Columbus 5 years and only now came here?!?!! Listen. The service here is legit and value for the money can't be beat. Yes. It's a school. No, they are not going to screw up your hair/face/wax whatever you get done because the instructor is there. Like any other practical training, they don't allow absolutely newbies to interact with patrons. The clinic is for those who already know what they're doing to get their practical hours. Now that the logistics are out of the way. I had the best facial for $30! The school really makes it special by having dedicated rooms, aroma therapy and soothing music. The facial began with a warm foot bath and ended with an aided stretch. I didn't really know what to expect but I can't tell you that it was a professional experience and will be back on the regular now. I think I'm in love!! read more

I hate to complain, because the girl who cut my hair was really nice and was really focussed and trying to do a good job. So this is not a complaint towards her. However, the instructor on shift during my haircut was so very unprofessional. I went in on Dec 9th around 6:30pm. The instructor was loud and honestly acting like a middle schooler. It was a bit uncomfortable. At one point he was leaping (I kid you not, leaping like Peter Pan in a ballet) through the aisles. If I was a student here, I'd be so embarrassed to have him as an instructor. There was a student sitting next to me reading. At one point he grabber her chair and ripped her into the aisle to get her attention. Again, it just made the environment feel very uncomfortable. Beyond that, he didn't really check my haircut for accuracy. He just asked "Are you happy?" I wasn't going to point out the things this poor girl missed, or the fact that she didn't take off enough or that she didn't do any texturizing like I'd asked. Who could concentrate in that environment? It was his job to check the cut but he just checked his clipboard and that was it. Most unprofessional instructor I've come across when I've come here. Went with a friend for facials. 2 completely different experiences. Did not come with the services advertised on their website.

I usually cut my own hair to save money, but I decided to get a professional to clean up my hair style especially in the back. It took 5 days after I submitted the online scheduling form for someone to call me to schedule an appointment, but they were nice and booked me with one of the more experienced students who was about to graduate and was familiar with my hair thickness. However, upon meeting her, she said she did not have that much experience cutting short, straight hair and would refer to diagrams and notes from her training in order to cut my hair. At least there are instructors around to help touch up final details. The atmosphere is pretty laid back and calming, but there were a lot of people sitting around chatting loudly. Overall, it took about 2 hours to simply clean up my hair by creating layers in the back even though it ended up being about the same length. I'm happy with the look in the end, but the whole experience was very time consuming. Only plus would be the good value (about $18 for the hair cut). read more

As a Aveda student I will be honest about my experience, when I started the program things were put together for my first 10 weeks. In the first 10 weeks you learn all the hair cuts, color services and other things Aveda has to offer. When you complete the classroom learning you will move out to the clinic floor after that you start seeing guests on a regular basis. The staff is friendly but when you want to get a hold of someone important the office people are very hard to get in contact with it took me two weeks to get a email from them to move my schedule... They don't keep you updated on the other people in the building and their health when it comes to COVID-19. When you make a appointment for one thing and you end up changing your mind you can't add services at this time. You will need to make two appointments. read more
