Nutmeg's is going on their 20th year of amazing dance with children and adults of all ages. Meg makes the studio warm and inviting for boys and girls and adults, if you go to that studio or have ever been, you are part of an amazing family of students and teachers for life! They actually have alumni come back and teach and bring their children to take dance. I can't express how this studio, Meg and all her teachers made this a Safe place for my girls from the age of 2 till now! All their shows are like going to a Broadway show, excellent choreography and music choices, even the dads love the shows! Heck, a few years the dads actually performed in the show!! It was the Best! During the COVID pandemic Meg ran the studio as best she could and did an incredible job keeping her students, teachers and families safe. She kept in touch with the health department as recommendations changed, did an outdoor show for a few years so the dancers could still perform, as schools were not allowing performances indoors. The dancers work all year for the big performance and Meg made sure to think outside the box and make sure they got to have their big performance for family and friends. It was actually fun to bring a picnic, blanket and chairs and watch the performances outside for a change. If you haven't seen one of Nutmeg's recitals indoors, get there this year, they really are professional and the dancers work so hard and are amazing! It is like a night out watching a Broadway show! I can't say enough good things about this studio and all the teachers and what a huge impact they had on all four of my children growing up, my two daughters and even my two sons both danced there a few years for boys hip hop and partnering! This studio is in the midst of their 20th year. I have enjoyed watching young girls and boys develop not only dance skills but mature and become outstanding young adults over the last two decades. The atmosphere at this studio is so very welcoming and encouraging. It is a non competitive studio. A place for those who wish to follow a dream of professional dance and those who just love to dance! The students range from 2 to very mature women. . Some of the Students from this studio have gone on to dance in some of the most prestigious dance programs at various Universities and Academies. Nutmeg's had been my home and safe space since I was 2 years old!! Meg, the owner, is everyone's best friend, sister, mother figure, etc. She does it ALL. Not only is she an incredible dancer and teacher (and has lead countless dancers off to pursue it in big ways) but she's the dance teacher that you can talk to about anything, you can cry to, and she makes everyone laugh so hard they cry. Being around Meg is always the best time she's just so bubbly and sweet! Nutmegs is not a competition studio, that means you get out of it as much or as little as you want. I'm writing this because I am extremely disappointed and had to share my opinion. We went to my granddaughter's dance recital this weekend for Nutmegs Dance. I had never seen her take any of her classes so I was excited. The venue was outside on a scorching hot day which was not ideal. I understand they had no control over the temperature but having a recital at the end of June outside doesn't seem like a smart decision. My granddaughter felt like she was going to be sick because it was so hot and nearly passed out after she danced. That's not the only thing that was bad... There were routines performed by older kids that were incredibly inappropriate. Shaking butts, suggestive movements, not something I'd expect with youngsters in the audience. I think some might've had adults too but with kids at the show, I don't think they should've be dancing like that in front of them. The younger kids' routines looked like they were put together 5 minutes before they went on stage... I saw one of my other granddaughter's dance recitals down south a few weeks ago and the young kids were a lot more rehearsed. The talent at my other granddaughter's recital was much better too and the whole thing seemed more organized than this. I was a tap and ballet dancer myself growing up and in college so I know what I'm looking at. My daughter (her mother) was not pleased at all the entire year and said she won't be back next year. She told me the teachers didn't seem very nice. I really only wrote all this because my daughter was so upset about the whole year and she would never speak up about this type of thing so I had to. Plus, I witnessed the recital and it was a huge let down to say the least. My granddaughter still loves dancing but she might go somewhere else, I'm not sure. I hope so. read more

I have a 7 year old son, and 9 year old daughter, at Nutmeg's Dance in Southwick. This studio has turned out to be a wonderful place for my children! My son is not particularly into sports, so, this has been a great outlet for his energy. He takes a Musical Theatre class, they sing, dance, play theater games, he absolutely loves it! My daughter takes Tap & Jazz/Hip Hop, and loves both classes, she is so excited for her first recital. We also are incredibly grateful the affordable costumes! Costumes were at least double the cost at the previous studio we attended. Very happy to have found this studio for my children, it really does have the feeling of a family. Trying to work up the courage to try an adult class myself! read more

This is in response to the ONE single poor review of this business. I have been dancing at this studio from age 9-28 (present) as well as teaching classes here. Having the knowledge of the dance world studying it most of my life as well as pursuing it in college I can attest to the fact that this studio compared to most I know of is the most positive, warm welcoming and accepting place I've been to. Meg the owner truly puts a mark on every students life that joins us here in this community. In response the last show that the reviewer posted about I can attest as I was there, that although it was a hot day, no one could have predicted the weather. If there was an option to have the show in another month of the summer she would have done it, but it was Covid times and an indoor performance was not allowed. Many dancers who have been dancing with us for years look forward to their recital every year and especially as you grow older with us and it becomes your senior year it's very important to you. Just like prom they would have been devastated with no show. Meg made their show possible this year by coming up with the idea of doing an outdoor performance and the date in June was the only available date possible. Again like not being able to predict the weather, she encourages all dancers throughout the tech week to drink lots of water because again it was June in summer and on the day of the show she even gave out water bottles to dancers and made sure everyone was staying hydrated. Now when your a young wee one at this studio we like to keep our classes entertaining, fun, lively and encourage movement! It is not a competition school and the last thing we want is to put pressure, stress or competition on any dancer. Because of this, the classes are created around movement as the dancer gets older the classes become more and more structured. When you become the age of high-school/ young adult hip/hop is one of the most popular classes at this studio. If you know about the dance world and professional dance you would know that more hip hop movements can be a bit more mature and advanced. Meg always did a great job of making everything appropriate cutting out words that you even hear on the radio and making movements fun exciting but age appropriate. Yes there is (shaking) in a more advanced hip hop class but nothing inappropriate , dance is movement and if that is inappropriate to you then maybe dance isn't for you. Meg has always given teenagers which are some of the most hardest years of your life the upmost confidence, and ability to be yourself. If you go to any graduating alum from this studio you would hear just how much meg did for them, how she touched their life and how she gave them the strength, confidence and sense of community in some of their hardest years. If you want to go on a pursue dance as a career, this place will give you the confidence to do so and encouragement, if you want to just be apart of a community and group of people that have fun and enjoy their time together this place will do that for you as well. Nutmegs Dance and Theatre Company has been my home for the past eleven years and the only place I had ever danced at! it's the place where I found my passion and gave me the space to realize that dance is what I was meant to do for the rest of my life! From the moment I stepped into the studio and watched class from the lobby I knew I belonged dancing! I started dancing there at seven years old and am still to this day at eighteen and I will never stop dancing and loving this place, it's been my forever home and safe place and will always continue to be! Meg Fenton Funk the owner and director is my biggest inspiration and mentor and has always been there for me and saved me when I was in need of it the most! She adores and loves and appreciates every single dancer that ever comes through her studio and treats them like her own children and family!
