Tapan is the best CPA I've ever had. I'm a medical professional, and so is my wife. When I moved to CA a few years ago, my previous CPA did stuff incorrectly and I was very very very cautious and selective in who I choose as my new CPA. We switched over to Tapan Patel. He knows his stuff. Extremely smart, efficient, and gives me peace of mind so I don't have to worry about my taxes. Myself and my wife both have businesses and he manages everything. I have filed my own tax returns for the last 20 years using computer tax applications, and I stick my nose into IRS publications from time to time. I decided to use a tax professional for the first time this year when the tax bill generated by the software was larger than expected. I was fairly certain that my tax was calculated correctly because my taxes are not very complicated; but after 20 years of hearing stories from others on how their tax professionals saved them hundreds or thousands of dollars, I thought I would try it out. I chose Nuttall & Co based upon their location and Yelp rating. I called Nuttal & Co and was soon put in touch with Mr. Patel, an Associate. He listened to my needs and offered to look at the digital returns I e-mail him so he could determine how to proceed. Mr. Nuttall called me shortly thereafter. Since I had already completed my federal and state returns, he offered to provide consulting services either on the phone or in person for a specified hourly rate to determine if everything was in order. I was able to get an appointment for the next day and accepted. I did not know if the hourly consulting rate Mr. Nuttall quoted me was reasonable, so I investigated online (yes, I should have done that first). I found out that the National Society of Accountants determined that the average preparation fee in the western states for preparing a return with a Schedule A in 2006 was $240 and $292 in 2010. Mr. Nuttall's hourly consulting rate was a little more than that. However, being a professional myself, I understand that one has to pay for educated or special service. I proceeded to the firm not knowing what I should expect; would I find starch-collared men sitting on leather furniture in oak paneled rooms smelling vaguely of cigar smoke? Nope. The firm is located in an upscale industrial park. The dress code is relaxed and the decor is utilitarian and well used. Since my return was complete and not very complex, I was concerned that Mr. Nuttall would look at it for ten minutes and charge me for a full hour. Instead, he looked it over, asked me questions, clarified a few points and provided advice. Mr. Nuttall spent a little over 30 minutes with me and charged for a half hour. He caught a computer error that ultimately saved me $100 (the software apparently didn't change a certain figure on all forms when I changed it on a worksheet). Mr. Nuttall also gave me advice that could serve me well in the future even if it didn't save me money this year. Was the service worth it? Probably. Do they have a good understanding of tax rules? They seem to, though my situation didn't really test them. Is the firm honest and fair? Definitely. Will I use the firm in the future for my personal taxes? Not until my taxes become complex; then almost certainly. Until then I will continue to use tax software and check the results very carefully. read more

The owner, who lived here in Orange, owed thousands of dollars to the IRS, was not catching up on back income taxes, and generally didn't know what to do. Bruce immediately recognized that setting up a professional corporation was the way to go. He also recommended a number of creative solutions to keep the business owner's tax liabilities reasonable. I wrote a review about how great this company was and how Bruce saved me a lot of money. First of all, he did save me money, however I later found out that I could have gone anywhere else and gotten the same return because my newly born daughter and schooling was a big deduction. The reason why I am giving him 1 star is because of the HUGE LACK of professionalism. Bruce maybe knowledgeable in what he does, however he was VERY disorganized with my paperwork. I found him on yelp like others did, so figured I would try him out. When I walked in, it was as if I walked back in time to the 70s. Everything was old and disorganized. Papers were piled up in the receptionist area and Bruce's office was EXTREMELY messy. To me, organization is a VERY important thing especially when you are dealing with financial matters. After charging me an arm and a leg, (not to mention they charged me some BOGUS MANDATORY $10 fee for their stupid website that NO one uses. I still don't understand what the charge was for). I was happy because I was receiving a good amount of money back (again, I later found out I could have gone anywhere else and gotten the same amount back). However my BIG problem with this company started as I was leaving... When I was leaving, I had to ask him to give me back my tax returns because he did not realize he did not give them to me. After reviewing my documents, I found they kept some of my important information mistakenly and I had to make a separate trip back there to get it (again it comes back to organization). Then about a week later I get a call saying that I need to pay for my tax return (I paid before I left). I explained that I paid already and the receptionist started to argue with me that she did not have any record of me paying. I told her it is not my fault their company is so disorganized that they cant even keep track of their own accounts receivable. I mean this IS AN ACCOUNTING OFFICE RIGHT?? I had to go to my bank, pull out my tax returns from my safe deposit box, fax them the proof of payment and told them I would NEVER go back there again! Practically ALL CPA's know the rules and new laws that come out. I would HIGHLY recommend going somewhere else if you do not want to deal with a world of headache. read more

His staff is superb and the team works really well together including the front office to the Quickbooks pro's that he employs. He charges around $300 per hour; the Quickbooks people get $75 per hour. He will also charge for advice if he has to spend time looking it up/figuring it out. Bruce is honest, genuine and a professional and I adore his staff. Just be aware of pricing upfront as the costs can mount quickly. read more
