Wine Classes! Squabbie and I took our first wine class at NYC Wine Class. We enrolled in their introductory to wine course, Wine 101. Andrew Harwood (the founder) was our instructor. He's had experience cultivating wine graps in Hungary, France, and California, to name a few places. He was quite informative and helpful. On top of our dessert wine, we had full glasses of 10 different types of wine. The grape variety for the wines included Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, & Malbek. The wine regions included Oregon, California, Argentina, Italy, and France. The prices of the bottles and their Wine Spectator ratings aren't revealed until after the wines are tasted, as to not provide a bias. There are five rounds of wines pairings, accompanied by a type of cheese. The wine pairings are selected to distinguish the contrasting tastes (e.g. comparison of regions, comparison of vineyard processing, or comparison of grape varieties). The class was a great introduction, and has whetted my desire to learn more about wines. If taken individually, the class would have cost $90, but Squabbie purchased the $275 four class promo package (good for 2 years and splitable amongst friends). Fun activity! This wine class was the most information I've gathered on wine since watching the SOMM documentary (which anyone who's into wine should watch!). I highly recommend this as something fun and new to try in the city. My boyfriend got us 2 tickets for a Saturday class at 5pm. We went to the Wine 101 class but they have several different types. We tried 10 wines and 5 of those are paired with a similar type of wine from different regions/climates. It was awesome to learn the differences step by step. I think for once I was finally able to differentiate between two of the same type of wine. I learned I prefer wines from warmer climate regions. They even teach you how to pair with different cheeses that I've never tried before. Definitely go. It's informative, fun and Andrew was a pretty laid back instructor. Going into my experience at the NYC Wine Company, I will fully admit that I knew NOTHING about wine. I chose bottles at the local wine store based entirely on price (super cheap) and if the label had an animal on it (monkeys always equal a purchase in my book). I didn't quite know what to expect from the Wine 101 class, though I was excited to taste some wine and hang out with awesome friends. I had no idea that I would have an incredible night on the town, taste some of the best wine of my life, and actually learn WHY I like certain white wines (turns out that I like white wines that are gown in cooler locations). The set-up of the NYC Wine Company is ideal...it's located just above a wine store on 23rd Street in Chelsea. It's a nice open space, great for private parties but also for the classes that are run nightly by the proprietor, Andy, and his team. The Wine 101 class was low key and fun, and I think our small group of six really gave Andy a run for his money since we had lots of questions (and were a little drunk...we didn't really TASTE the wine...we DRANK the wine)...but he had lots of answers, too. Some cheeses were brought in to complement the ten wines we tasted, and it was interesting to learn how different flavors in the wine are enhanced by certain cheeses. And at the end of the night, there was a blind taste test to see if we'd really learned anything...and somehow I was the one who went home with the bottle of pink prosecco! Thank goodness I share well. I would absolutely return to NYC Wine Company...now that I've passed Introduction to Wine, I'm ready for something far more advanced...plus, I like to drink. read more

With the recent coronavirus outbreak, we were worried this morning because I woke up sick and with a fever. My wife, who is a chef and works in the food industry, called the NYC Wine Company to let them know I was sick and whether we could reschedule or not. They said no, sorry. I was prepared to attend although I don't feel well but thought it would be better to be safer than sorry by not attending as this is a public health issue. Too bad NYC Wine Company doesn't see it that way and values $$$ over public safety and their potential customers. We had a great time here for the Wines 101 class. You try about 10 wines, in pairs to show different aspects of wine, and each set of wines was paired with very good cheese. Wow, am I glad that the lovely boyfriend got me this for my birthday... Tonight was fantastic. I've been to many, many wine tastings and classes and this was, by far, the best I've experienced. I was in awe of Andrew. His experiences and knowledge of wine are really unmatched by anyone I've met in person. Sixteen Wines, 8 Cheeses was a great class. The evening was wonderfully paced so that we didn't get intoxicated too quickly and had time to fully experience and enjoy each cheese and wine pairing. One cheese we had was probably the best either of us had ever tasted. The wines were all surprisingly affordable (under $30, with most coming in around $15). The service was great with endless bread and olives to go with the wines and cheeses. I would absolutely, positively come back for another class with Andrew. It was well worth the money. read more

Yes, Andrew knew more about wines then anyone I ever met and he wasn't all "wine snobby" about it if you know what I mean. But, what was really great was sitting at one of the large tables, meeting new people, making new friends, having a real fun time. drinking really good wine and cheese. 16 wines, 8 cheeses, one night = awesome! Came here with my boyfriend for my birthday and it was such a good time! They pair the wines and cheeses perfectly! Andrew really knows what he is talking about. It was really interesting learning about the differences in wine and how its made. There is alot more that goes into it than you think. The only issue, was that he talked low and fast, so if you can try to sit near him. The room is spacious and has a cool NYC vibey feel to it. It was also very nice of them to offer people to stay after the class, to have some of the wines they tried in class to finish off some of the bottles. I definitely recomend this if your looking for something fun and interesting to do. I know I will be back to take some of the other classes that they offer! Came here with some friends and had a blast! As soon as we came in we were seated and immediately given 2 wines and some cheese (before class officially started). It was nice to not have to wait for all participants to get started. Andrew ran the class and is extremely knowledgable about wines. 16 wines and 8 cheeses was definitely a lot but gave a broad overview of different wines. We met some really nice people (though it seemed like most people came in couples). If you need an overview on wine and are open to trying a lot of different wines, come to this class. What an amazing class! A friend and I took the "Italy North to South" class last night and were so impressed with everything about it. The wine selection certainly helped us to learn a little bit about a number of wine varietals and regions, plus the owner/teacher Andrew was full of information, without a bit of pretension. My non-wine drinking hubby purchased me a gift certificate for 2 so I brought one of my best girlfriends as my date for class. We took France 101 and really enjoyed ourselves. We both love wine and have a fair understanding of French wine, but we're certainly not experts. It was nice to learn a bit more about some of the lesser known regions and take a closer look at complex areas such as the Rhone regions. Oh Chateauneuf du Pape, I do love you. While we didn't know what to expect were very happy with our experience here. Andrew leads a great class and is obviously extremely knowledgeable, plus he makes it fun. We had 10 different wines and 6 accompanying cheeses so the pairing aspect was cool. Overall, it was social and casual and totally approachable which was perfect since we went in blind. Wine and cheese tasting with amazing breads too! The owner is Andrew is very charming and very knowledgeable. I learnt a lot about French red wines over the 2 hours class. I didn't get drunk which was a challenge as you get to sample over 10 wines. I would have appreciated a much smaller class (we were 30 people) found it less intimate and less social. I have to say that this class was really informative and that the speaker Andrew really knows his shit. The place is NOT in the wine store that is very close by but is in an upstairs loft type space that had a simple but really nice decor going on. They gave us sheets with info on the wines and the cheeses (which they got from Murray's cheese), it was a very interactive class and they were very prompt with filling up our bread and olive dishes whenever they became empty. We went to wine 101 but they offer a variety of other classes too if you don't need the basics. He really makes you realize that there isn't a reason to pretend to know more about wine than you do, and that wine is really as good as your personal preference and therefore it doesn't need to cost a hell of a lot in order to be something you'll enjoy. read more

We received wine 101 as a gift and were excited to give it a try. To be honest, we were bit disappointed. To start, the class started 30 min late with no 'sorry we running late' or any indication to what was going on. Once the class started, it was bit lacklustre. The wine wasn't to our palette but the pairings with multiple snacks was nice. The overall setting/ambiance is well done and nice for a date night. I did find it bit pricey, even for NYC. read more

You can learn about classics such as Italian, French or Californian wines or lesser well known regions such as Croatia, Hungary and Portugal. You taste about 8 wines, which have been thoughtfully paired with Murray's cheeses and delicious breads. Andrew is extremely knowledgeable and helps guide you through each wine's aroma and tasting notes with warmth and openness, understanding that we all have different palates that smell and taste differently. NYC Wine Company classes are great for a date, a night out with friends or visiting family members. Completely and totally disappointing! Cons: - The instructor (I believe he is also the founder) sucked! He mumbled and didn't make eye contact. He might have a lot of experience with wines but he sure as hell can't teach it to a class. - The wines sucked. I know I was there to learn more about wine but I don't need someone to tell me what sucks. I can figure that out for myself and most of those wines sucked. - Slooooow. The class was supposed to end at 7:30 and we had dinner plans but there were only 2 people serving about 30 of us and they were slow and disorganized. Most people had to leave before the class ended because it ran so late. - I didn't learn anything new or worth the price of the class. Pros: - Great facilities. Very nice space and set up. - Delicious cheeses and meats. These food pairings made the class bearable. Conclusion: I wouldn't recommend these classes to anyone. Went back for a second class (South of the Border) and it was even better than the first. It was a smaller group than the first, which greatly improved the dynamic of the room. The wines were fantastic and my whole table devoured the cheeses. Andrew (the instructor and owner) was incredibly knowledgeable and a great teacher. He even took the time to hang out with my table after class while we helped finish an open bottle of wine, which was very kind. We took the Italy, North to South wine class and loved it! The atmosphere was intimate, chic and classy from start to finish.We would try two wines at a time and compare the taste and tannins against one another. The wines were also paired with cheeses which were delish! It was very interesting and we learned a lot about wines from different regions of Italy. There was one wine I particularly fell in love with and promptly picked up a bottle the next day at Eatily. Highly recommend this class for a date night or outing with friends. The space is so intimate and you feel as though you are learning at someone's dinner table. Our instructor, Andrew, was so knowledgeable and engaging. He walked us through ten or so different wines with cheese and meat pairings. Each one was exquisite. Andrew was able to articulate the differences between the various wines and still allow us to form our own opinions throughout the tasting. He made sure to round out the class by explaining how we could use the information to select wines in the future. Absolutely fabulous class. My boyfriend and I went to the Spain and Portugal class prior to a trip to both countries. Andrew was very knowledgeable, engaging, smart, witty, and hands off. He did a great job teaching but also letting all of us try the wines and give our own opinions. The cheese and meat pairings were also fantastic. Wonderful portion sizes and you definitely won't leave hungry or thirsty. Easily the best wine tasting class we have been to in the city. I recently planned a company event in which NYC Wine Company came to our offices in Financial District and held a Wine 101 class. Planning was so seamless and easy, thanks to the fast response time and incredible coordination by Andrew. They set up the tables at our office to make the class look really beautiful, with nice wine glasses and settings for the cheese. Andrew was extremely knowledgeable and everyone really enjoyed the class. We learned about 8 different wines we tasted, as well as the accompanying cheeses which come from Murray Cheese. It was an amazing event and I high recommend to anyone! This was amazing! Andrew was very knowledgeable. He did seem a bit nervous or quiet at first but towards the end he either got better at public speaking or I got more drunk and he sounded great. haha. No, seriously he was amazing and I have recommended this class to my friends, family and colleagues. The break up of 2 wines per 5 cheeses worked very well. The cheese pairings were amazing and the olives and bread were yummy! It was fun sitting next to strangers and chatting with them about wine and everything else. At the end he even let us stay and have another glass of whichever wine we liked best if we wanted to. I can't wait to try the next class! I took the Focus on Reds class last night and learned so much! The instructor is so knowledgeable and very approachable, he really knows his stuff! I found the class to be engaging and informative, with just the right amount of delicious wine and cheese. The class overviewed 10 different wines, coupled with 5 delicious cheeses. The instructor began the lesson by telling us that it was just as beneficial to find a wine that we didn't like, as one that we did: because we could pick out the different aspects of each to learn more about our taste. He constantly asked the class what we thought of the wines, and usually it was 50/50. I'm shocked by an earlier review that seems to indicate that the instructor was offended if you didn't like a wine: I had the complete opposite experience. He invited opinions, and gave us the tools to figure out how we form those opinions. It did not ever feel pretentious or intimidating. I felt comfortable, yet at the same time was in a fine dining atmosphere. The wine and cheese were brought out promptly and the water and bread were refilled quickly. Overall, a great experience. I would highly recommend this wine school. It is clean, modern, and fun! read more

The classes are great fun, you learn lots and a lovely way to build up your knowledge of various wines in a relaxed, informal setting. When I started classes back in August 2009, I was very much interested in wines, but I wanted to learn more about them to understand better. I liked classes enough, I have attended more than 10 classes by now. So I can call myself sort of an "expert" on classes in NYC wine class. :) Class This probably is the #1 reason why I kept going back to NYC wine class. Andrew (the proud owner) is working so hard and also ingenious in creating special wine classes that stimulate my curiosity all the time. If you are serious, or just like to venture out different wines from different regions, try some of his specialty wine classes. Ambiance Classes are held in the cozy 3rd floor of the building. You will be greeted with light but refreshing proseco or sparkling wine before the class starts. I always hoped that the class could start on time, it is usually 30 min late. But then again, you can enjoy proseco no matter what. There were several helpers that I have experienced. The recent one is Dan. He is always welcoming and excellent, so feel free to be friend with him. (I hope he doesn't mind my comment. :)) Bear in mind that if you are going to take a class alone, I think that you need to be a bit more engaging. Andrew tends to give you, in my point of view, a little bit longer time to taste and socialize than I like, so you may sit by yourself and drink quietly. But as I have gone back multiple times, I met a nice friend there, and was getting to know Andrew as well. Please feel free to bother him. :) Wines, Cheeses, etc There are usually 8-10 wines to taste 2 pairs in comparison with 1 cheese. This is one of great joy I have in the class. You will find excellent wines that satisfies you but may not find anything at all. But if I were you, no matter what, I would take it as an opportunity to experience something different. I hope that I have given you enough reason to try this place and go back for more. I gained a lot of knowledge for the past year or so, and enjoyed my time there. I came here for a 16 wine and 8 cheeses class. i did not know what to expect, but this is really a great date night or girls night experience. Andrew, the owner, gives a great lecture on the difference between cold climate vs. warm climate wines, which wines are more acidic and which have more sugar. Me, being the nerd I am, loved the informal yet informative class aspect of it. I have to say I was a little scared by tasting 16 different wines, but if there is one you don't like, you can simply dump it and start fresh with the next round of wines. I loved how they paired cheeses that complimented and enhanced the flavor of each wine. This idea is really genius! I went with my sister and it seemed we were the only non-date couple, but it was totally fun. Along with the wine and cheese, is ample amounts of water and some olives and bread are also served. I highly recommend this, for a different kind of date. I can not wait to try the rest of the classes. I learned so much and tried wines I've never heard of, or might have never ordered. I've been here twice and will definitely come back for a 3rd time. Andrew is a true gentleman and master wine connoisseur. Nothing snobby or pretentious about this experience -- quite the opposite -- Andrew's classes are casual, lively and filled with honest and practical commentary / takeaways. I'm sure you can taste delicious wines at any class in NYC but Andrew's modest yet charismatic and fun demeanor is what makes this experience so special. Would 100% recommend this to a friend and can assure you that the class is worth every penny. As if this stellar review wasn't enough to sell you, Andrew went out of his way to find me a spot in his class on Valentine's Day after someone dropped out the day of the course.
