After walking around all day looking for the "edge" of Amsterdam, we saw a bustling restaurant while walking down Kloveniersburgwal. The bustling energy and the waiting crowds caught our eye. Normally you see a lot of tourists waiting for a beer or some over-hyped food at a tourist trap, but Nyonya is neither of those. It is just a tiny space that squeezes in a lot of eager patrons on any given day. We knew we have to eat at Nyonya as soon as we stepped in and took in the aroma and energy of the place. Be prepared to sit very very close to other patrons as they squeeze in a lot of tables in a tiny space. It adds to the character and aforementioned "energy" of this place. We started with traditional staples - Roti canai and the traditional Malay tea, which are similar to Indian parathas and chai. The roti was perfect - crispy on the outside, flaky on the inside. The man ordered a vegetable dish with okra and I got the chicken rendang. Expertly prepared dishes. Chicken swimming in spicy coconut sauce makes a long day much better. The highlight is the little potato balls that come with the dish. Little balls of heaven! The kitchen is extremely small (you can see it while walking to the bathroom), yet they churn out delicious dishes like a well-oiled machine. A true local spot in Amsterdam, not over run by tourists. Well done, Nyonya! Well done!!

Love at first bite and then some. Finding this place was no easy task in Amsterdam! Only because there are so many canals and restaurants in this areas. Best way? Just walk through the De Wallen aka Red light district and you shall get your spicy fix! Amsterdam is full of ethnic flavors. A ton of Indonesian, Thai and Chinese places. And Dutch Asian fusions etc. You should just pick a dish you like and go for it. At least I did. Most places were closed on New Year's Eve! And New Year's Day. So glad this place was open!! Came the first time few days before New Year's Eve and came on the new year day. Hours - 1-9 pm! They make you wait! It's a small tiny shop with giant red chili on the sign. Look for Goa coffee shop on the canal. It's right next to it! Food Roti canai - obvious choice! It's a Malaysian must have. Hainese chicks and rice- the only place that has this dish in all of Amsterdam. And it was super tasty!! Spicy noodle soup- got this from owners recommendations. It is nice, hearty and spicy!!! Came with shrimp and crispy bread pieces. Number 34- chicken with sambal! Easy tasty dish! Laksa/ had this on my second visit and wow!! This is ahhhhmazing. I loved it.it has so much protein! Chicken, prawns, fish cakes, tofu! Noodles!! Oh so good. I ate the whole thing. The place is small so depending on the time you go, you might or might not get a table!! But I love the food so I don't mind the wait. And they don't serve alcohol. You have to make do with soda or tea but with food that good, I'm not complaining!!

Nyonya cooking refers to food from Grandma's recipes and that is why many Malaysian restaurants are named Nyonya. This type of Malaysian food is comforting, warm and filling. This is a tiny restaurant that serves delicious food with no frills. The food is authentic and packed full of flavor. My highlights were the roti canai (pancake with curry), hainan chicken (cold chicken with spicy dipping sauce), and anything with lady fingers. Food: 5/5 Good, filling home-cooked food. Service: 4/5 Staff was friendly and the menu had pictures which makes ordering easier. Atmosphere: 3/5 The space is super small and cozy, it is more of a place to grab a quick bite. Value: 4/5 Dishes around 15 euros/plate and portions are big. It also comes with a huge bowl of rice. CASH ONLY

It is pretty a hidden treasure in Amsterdam and located next to Nieuwmarkt. So if you love Malaysian food, than you should give it a try! The menu is very diverse from the famous Nasi Lemak, Laksa (spicy noodle soup), Roti Canai.... On the table they have even put all the delicious food on a picture for your convenience to choose from! The decoration is OK and it is a very small restaurant where in total 15 persons can fit. The service is good and very friendly! The owners are from Malaysia which is in my opinion definately a plus ;) My recommendations: Try the Nasi Lemak (normally it is typically a rice dish served as breakfast in Malaysia! And Roti Canai (thin pancakes dipped with deliciou sauce!) as appetizer! If you like spicy noodles, than choose Laksa (ask for more red peppers if you can handle it ;)

My Malaysian boyf and I went there today - he was skeptical about eating there as he thought it was a bit too tacky but he was impressed with the food there. We had assam chicken (not like home, he said), beef rendang (so like home!) and kungkang belecan (very good he said, beloved by many Malaysians!) The restaurant is small - Amsterdam standard - but the staff there is very friendly. The owner and his wife runs the place - the wife is from HK I believe but the owner is from Pahang, the central state in Peninsular Malaysia. They seems to be very patient and friendly. Often helpful. It is my 4th time there already and I will come back! For you Malaysians, it may not be 100% perfect but its 90% perfect - even the Malaysian Embassy recommends this place to Malaysian visitors :D

A nice malaysian restaurant, fastfood decoration.there is a menu picture on the table if not sure what to choose. The laska is really good. I also like their roti. The taste is kind of mediocre. We only choose this as the fiveth choice in the center, after bird, mandarij, sichuan, and sigon.

This is one of the highlights of my visits to Amsterdam. A tiny, no frills Malaysian eatery, beloved by Amsterdam people and the Malaysian community alike. It's quite hidden and very small and it tends to get full. You must be very patient here, waiting time can be long. But if you sit back and relax you will be rewarded with great and authentic food, just like in Malaysia.

    Laksa :) Shrimp coconut Noodle
    Tran K.

Best Laksa in town in my opinion. Gosh, I terribly missed the flavor of coconut and burning chili feeling noodle soup and yes, this shop had satisfied my tongue and my stomach. However, the noodle was kinda bland, it was not chewy like real authentic Laksa noodle but well, the stock was FANTASTIC. However I don't like the shop decoration. It's too humid and cramp for me. Feeling out of air here.

€12.50 Laksa - wrong noodles, wrong tofu, where my cockles - 在哪里??! laksa leaves?

Laksa - $12.50 euro. As Rachel T pointed out half a year ago this laksa was curry mee and not actually the laksa you see on Anthony Bourdain in Singapore (or Malaysia, if he ever went). I see alot of people here on this page acting like they know anything about laksa and it is quite apparent they don't, now that i went based on their testimonials and ate the €12.50 curry mee. Questions you need to ask yourself before going to get the Laksa: 1. Are you from or have you lived in Singapore or Malaysia? (Think, 328 katong) 2. Have you travelled extensively to either and ever had laksa from either country? 3. Are you expecting Anthony Bourdain-style mind blowing laksa? If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions then this is not the place to get Laksa for €12.50. Tea Tarik - it was a C for effort, but it was short of the mark. In short, you can get a slight essence of both tea tarik and laksa here but you will be quite disappointed.

We really enjoyed our lunch here last weekend. If I had seen this place from the street I can't imagine actually wanting to eat here but we decided to trust the reviews, and it paid off! J had the laksa which was a mix of prawns, tofu, noodles, veggies and a coconut based broth. Really interesting and tasted great. I had the daging rendang which was a slightly spicy beef with broccoli, green beans and these little potato like balls. It was very filling and had nice flavours. This place has good service and nice food. Would return!

This is my 3rd or 4th time here over a few years (usually on brief stopovers at AMS). I did some serious Yelping and pavement pounding this visit, looking for something new, but wound up here again, and I am so glad I did. Tried ordering the cuttlefish with Malaysian beans (#75), but the server discouraged me from trying the beans if I wasn't familiar with them, and recommended the #74 instead (cuttlefish with mixed vegetables). It was simply one of the most all-around satisfying dishes I can ever remember. The cuttlefish (squid) was so perfectly fresh, glossy-textured, and toothy tender - - a complete joy. The vegetables were green beans and ladyfingers (little okras) with mushrooms et al, and again, the textures were a complete delight - - really pleasing - - and the sauce was superbly rich and succulent - - luscious. Nice spice/heat too, which I appreciate. Service perfect (and caring - - the chef came by and asked how it was), food ridiculously good - - absurdly satisfying - - and the atmosphere is bright and playful with the neon lights and the airplanes and chili peppers hanging from the ceiling. A touch pricey but that's Amsterdam. Someday I'll go someplace else, but I really can't think of a good reason.

This is a tiny little gem close to the red light district. We got the sweet and sour chicken (#32) extra spicy (of course) and fried tofu vermicelli (#189)--bo. The staff was also nice and friendly. If you want authentic Malaysian food--here is your spot. Beware that it is cash only, and like most places in Amsterdam, will charge you for water

All the dishes here are delicious! Not too salty or oily. Better than the states! The portions are kinda small though and the place is small so we had to fold up the stroller and hold our baby when we ate here.

It is helpful to make a reservation, but if you didn't ... they have a lot of tables, and many turn over fast, so get in line and wait, you'll get a table eventually. They have a really good selection of vegetarian dishes, so much that you won't feel restricted at all. Spice levels are moderate, so if you're a pepper-head, order some sambal on the side. Do order some of the side dishes; I'm especially fond of the bara and the teloh with salt cod and peanut sauce. Warning, though: Surinamese food uses nuts heavily, so do not go here if you have a nut allergy.

The staff were friendly and courteous, and I would gladly come back next time I'm in Amsterdam. Walked in on a Saturday evening around 7pm as a solo diner and the restaurant was packed. I didn't make reservations so was hoping they could squeeze me in and it was a yes, just had to wait for about 8-10 minutes until the bar area seating cleared up a bit. Score! Seated the menu was presented right away, after about 10 minutes staff asked for my order, I got: - Spang Makandra Special €17.50: this is a plate of several of the house specialities. Fried rice & noodles, braised chicken, grilled chicken satay, stir-fried long beans, egg, potato sambal and perkedel (fried potatoes). So tasty all around! Loooved the braised chicken was done very well, the peanut sauce used for the chicken satay was a bit on the sweeter side. The egg was scrambled (believe this was intentional for this preparation), the flavors were delicious! I can't comment to the authenticity since I'm no expert in Surinamese food though would certainly recommend this dish to all. - Dawet €3.00: if you're familiar with SE Asian shaved ice with palm sugar syrup, the flavor of this drink is reminiscent. While the color is a bright pepto bismol pink, it's mostly coconut milk with a strong flavor of gula malaka. Was on the sweeter side though glad for the coconut milk to balance out the spiciness of the hot sauce. - Beef rendang sandwich €6.50: sooo yummy. Considering the Indonesian and Chinese influences in Surinamese food, I've eaten my share of specifically Malaysian and Indonesian food in those countries and the curry flavors in the sandwich were prominent and super tasty. The spices were quite strong that even wrapped in foil and inside a plastic bag, my entire bag smelled like rendang (in a most moth-watering way lol) after carrying for some hours. The decor was cozy and filled the left side wall with pics of patrons of the past, opposite wall full length mirrors to make the space look larger. Seating enough for about 50-60 probably. Even though they were slammed, staff checked in periodically on how I was doing, refilled water, which indirectly led to an interesting conversation with another solo diner sitting at the bar. Strong recommend!

I don't have Indonesian food where I live, so was excited to try this in Amsterdam. I thought the dishes were all flavorful and gave a good mix of meat, vegetable, and rice dishes. The individual servings were small, but filling enough because of the heavy coconut milk used in most dishes. 1 star off: The attitude of the waitstaff was abysmal. First of all, their website does not offer reservations and they rarely answer their phones. So my family and I arrived at restaurant opening to get a table. The first thing they said to us was "Do you have a reservation? If you don't, I can only give you a table if you get out by 6:30PM." in a stern way. We said okay. The group that came after me also raised the issue that no one at the restaurant answers their phone for reservations. The waitstaff did not respond to that, but begrudging seated them. 1 star off: While we were ordering food, the waitstaff noticed that my son had a water bottle with him, and proceeded to give him a lecture that water bottles are not allowed and that we have to order water from them. He is a teenager...he does not know he was supposed to conceal his water bottle at this restaurant. We all ordered drinks, including water, but the experience left my family feeling unwelcomed.

They also have a great drink menu, complete with plenty of zero proof options. I ordered the vegan Rames (and picked yellow rice at a server's recommendation). It was absolutely amazing! It's a very generous serving of rice that is topped with generous portions of all kinds of deliciousness, including satay with the best peanut sauce ever, generous portions of veggie delights, and even more tofu and tempeh.
