Sometimes in a smaller city you're not sure what to expect but I can guarantee you if you go here you will love it. First of all the service was phenomenal My wife and I split like we normally do and they split it into equal portions on separate dishes and even did it for the salad. My mom had fish and chips and the fish was super juicy and extra crispy on the outside. And everything that everybody got was absolutely delicious. I'm so sad to be writing this about one of my favorite places in town. Unfortunately, it was a huge miss today. The food truck/vendor festival downtown was absolutely packed and the lines were so crazy we decided we'd rather sit down in a restaurant instead. When we walked in, they cleaned off a table and had us seated right away. We ordered the crab pretzel for an appetizer because it sounded unique and interesting. It was so rich, almost difficult to eat, so we won't be doing that again. We ordered our food and I ordered a cocktail. We actually watched the drink sit on the bar, all the ice melting... for at least 20 minutes before it was brought to our table. It was a watered down version of what could have been good. Our food took over an hour to arrive. We walked in around 1:30, and didn't leave until 2:50. The food arrived at 2:40. We only left because I had somewhere to be at 3, not because we were finished eating... my husband's burger and fries were lukewarm at best, as were my fries. My sandwich was only hot because they had forgotten to make it along with my husband's food, and someone called out for them to make one real quick. Which explains why my husband's food was no longer warm, because we watched it sit there while they made my food. I had time to take a couple bites of my sandwich before we had to try and flag down our waitress for the check and to-go boxes because I no longer had time to eat before my event. This was so, so disappointing and we were really surprised that nothing was comped from our bill. Updating my review from 2014. Great Irish bar and restaurant. The decor is spot on. Nice large bar area with TVs. Additional seating inside (tables and booths), along with seating outside in the back. The food is very good. Traditional Irish dishes along with burgers, sandwiches, wraps, fish and chips, etc.. Highly recommend the reuben and fish and chips. The Philly cheesesteak is also pretty good. Full bar, some wine, and beer in bottles and draft. Parking is street parking. You are in downtown Mocksville so it's not really a hassle to park, and parking is free. One really nice item is you can pay the bill via QR code, which uses Toast to pay your bill. No more handing over your card to the wait staff. I love this feature. read more

First time here. Makes me wonder why we waited so long!! My wife had the Smoked Gouda burger with herbed grits and I had fish and chips. The burger was actually two burgers. The fish and fries were cooked perfectly! And I can't forget the fried pickles we tried also! Top shelf!! Everything was delicious. Inside was very pleasant- bar and a few tables on one side and dining room on the other. Tables and furnishings are very nice. Kudos to Rebecca our waitress! Excellent job. O'Callahans has the best food. I go there at least a couple of times a month and have never been disappointed. The fish and chips are out of this world and I love their Reuben sandwich. Been a few years since my last review of O'Callahan's. There's been some ups and down but can honestly report that now they have reached perfection. They've opened a dedicated restaurant side recently that is just beautiful While they were at it they upped the game with their food. I've literally been eating their Shepherds pie since day 1, when they opened and today's was the very best I ever had. Hubby's bangers and mash was spectacular as well. Writing this review is really hard for me. O'Callahans has always been one of my favorite places to go, but it seems like each time I go, my experience is worse and worse. This visit was during the Mocksville food truck festival. We docked to walk in and eat here instead of stand outside and eat overpriced food truck food. I wish I went with the food trucks. We walked in, while a good amount of the tables had people at them, they did not seem like they were mobbed at all. The hostess said their kitchen was "a little behind" which turned out to be a gross understatement. We were seated around 130pm, ordered waters and the crab appetizer. My wife also ordered a drink from the bar. The pretzel came out in about 15 minutes. It was wayyyyy too rich. The cheese on top of the crab was just overkill and could have been way better without it, and I ended up scraping most of it off. We then watched her drink get made and proceed to sit on the bar for another 30 minutes. We ordered our main dishes, I got a simple burger and fries. 20 minutes turned into 40 and 40 turned into an hour. I saw my burger get put up and they were about to bring it out when we saw/heard our waitress say they didn't make my wife's food. That turned into another 20 minutes, and our main dishes didn't come out until about 250pm. We had somewhere to be at 3pm and were forced with the decision to either scarf it all down or save it for later. I was too hungry to wait so I went with option one, but my wife was forced to box up 90% of her meal. I didn't say anything, because that's not the type of person I am. I was halfway expecting the waitress to comp our appetizer or do something to make the situations a little better since she apologized for the wait a handful of times. But to my disappointment, that did not happened. I paid and left. I know they've bought the building next door and are planning on expanding, but I will not be returning until they expand. read more

Irish pub in Mocksville ! I came here years ago when it first opened since then it's changed hands in ownership, so a friend and I thought we'd try it out. It's a nice look from the outside. Inside nice and cozy and unlike atmosphere. Bar and seating mixed with a lot of American elements ! Could be a local hang out as they have a full bar and a good menu . We got seated at a nice table by the window and they had decorated for the holidays already so it was pretty to look at. The have a few seasonal drink specials on the table menu and then a full cocktail, wine and beer menu . Pretty good variety for a small town. My friend and I ordered a bottle of Prosecco which they came back to tell us they were out of... but said we could order a glass? Weird. We got a glass each and it was a flat not bubbly Prosecco. Out of curiosity we ordered a second glass each which pretty much makes up a bottle and got those flat too. Weird they couldn't sell us a bottle though. Anyway! The food was really good and the service so I'll commend them for that. I had the classic fish and chips. Great pieces of cod battered and crispy. I was weary when I read fries instead of chips on the detail but thankfully they were more like the English chips. Thick and skin on. Served with coleslaw and tartare sauce. I asked for malt vinegar as you can't eat fish and chips without it. They bought that out straight away. It was all really good. Really enjoyed it. My friend had the turkey Reuben with pub chips. She loved hers too. She said the bread was really good. Huge Reuben ! She had enough for lunch the next day. I tried the pub chips and they were great. So crispy ! Servers were super nice. They seem to have a nice regular clientele and have settled into a nice niche here in Mocksville. The little dining strip of restaurants definitely benefits from them. We traveled here with the sole purpose of eating at this spot. This is a rather small place that has been very attractively upfitted, with a gold ceiling, stylish wall decorations, and a nice bar area with comfortable stools that have back support. Note, you only have street parking available. Since it was our initial visit, we wanted to try a nice mixture of items, focusing primarily on Irish choices, though there are a number of pub food choices, and even some pastas. We began with Reuben Bites and Onion Rings to go with our beer choices of half and half (Harp and Guinness) and Yuengling Larger - the half and half was awesome! The Reuben Bites were well sized but pricey at $12, and the accompanying Whiskey Mustard went very well with them. This is a heavy dish and should be for sharing - think of egg rolls with thinly sliced corned beef with sauerkraut! The Onion Rings were not especially plentiful (there were a total of 4 as a side dish, App is $9), but they were large & at $4, reasonably priced, and were excellent, as good as the best in the Winston area, those at Davie Tavern. Our entrees were Fish & Chips ($13) and Corned Beef and Cabbage ($18). The Fish and Chips were simply excellent - 2 large pieces of flaky Cod, perfectly battered and fried - all you could ask for from this part of the dish! The fries were ok, but didn't rise to the level of the fish - still this is a dish to be ordered! The Corned Beef and Cabbage was a large portion, nicely plated, a colorful dish for sure. Unfortunately the taste and texture was more than a bit off. The corned beef was sliced very thin, the thinnest I've come across, and both the taste and the texture were not what I would wish for here. The broth was a more than bit weak, little evidence of the presence of pickling spices, lacked the layered flavor you would expect from this classic item - it is what ties this dish together providing the major flavor ingredient to each item and to the whole! In addition, the cabbage, sliced carrot, and potatoes were in large pieces, and as a result, a bit undercooked. While this was not a totally bad dish, it is not one I'd reorder, especially at this price. All in all, the very good items here made for a mostly worthwhile experience. it is always a matter of determining what they do very well, judging the level of service, and the comfort of the ambiance. Ok so I am a sucker for an Irish Pup. That being said this place isn't a 100% accurate Irish Pup but it is Irish enough!! They have Guinness, make black and tans, offer bangers and mash, shepherds pie, corn beef and cabbage, etc.... Even the non Irish items are really good. Last time I had a fried catfish platter that was great and my daughter had the pasta ala vodka which is amazing!! I'm lucky I don't live here because I would eat there all the time!! Perfect time of year to check out an Irish restaurant. Restaurant was busy but they were quick with service. They have an additional section out back and check Facebook for music events. Usually this place is 5 stars as the food and drinks are great. This trip however was people complaining of working 8 hours, staff rolling silverware in the booth behind us and to top it off, we saw a bunch of beautiful white cheese cake slices being delivered to other tables and thought it would be nice to bring a piece home. So we got a pto go. Which was green from St.Patricks day a month ago. She explained they freeze it, which again isn't what I wanted to hear. It was TERRIBLE, tasted like freezer and old. Not good. The food and the atmosphere are good here, however, some nit picky things brought my star rating down. For one our appetizers came out before our drinks, would have understood it taking a while since we all ordered draft beers, but they were just sitting there while the other wait staff stood around and talked right next to them. I was about to get up and grab them for our table but I think the person working expo noticed and made someone bring them to the table. Another thing that turned me off (again not a big deal) but our salads came at the same time as our meals. We may have caught them on a bad night, so I don't want to let that keep people from trying it. The food did have a great flavor to it. Not particularly impressed with my experience here. I have heard time and again how great the food was. We went Sunday afternoon about 5pm. Lots of staff as they were all standing at one end of the counter. All the staff were in pirate outfits which was kind of fun. The fries on both our orders were ice cold. I had the Fish and chips and the fish tasted awesome! But, unless you going to drink a lot, don't expect to get full here. First disappointment since moving to Mocksville. read more

Very disappointing experience. Madison S, the server had a bad attitude and wasn't helpful when the Ceasar salad with salmon had a palm size portion for $18. We flagged down another server to express concern over the salmon salad. We did receive an additional palm sized portion poorly cooked as it was raw. The fish and chips was mostly breading and again poorly cooked- the batter was burnt on the outside and raw on the inside. Server was mostly non existent and we had to ask for refills. Madison gave us the almost $90 check and we had to ask for an itemization of the bill From the host. Host acted as though complaints about Madison was commonplace. Its an Irish restaurant so fish and chips and Shepards pie should be outstanding Shepard's pie was good but a little salty but still good the fish was cooked well but the batter on the fish and onion rings had absolutely no flavor. there was no salt in the table so had to get salt from another table which was all clumped and wouldn't come but server was no where to be found which is the real reason for low rating Never showed up to refill water or check or anything. I did observe her fill water at two other tables and she was sitting in a booth at the far end of the restaurant a few times. So so food and crappy service. No need to go there again. read more

First time customers and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience. A day trip to Mocksville was in order as we'd never been there. Parked the car in the quaint downtown area and spotted a couple of places to eat, as we were in need of food. O'Callahans was our choice so we were quickly seated and greeted by our server. She was courteous, humorous and witty...traits I like. Looked at the menu and my wife decided on the shrimp salad. I chose the shrimp and grits. The owner introduced himself and gave us some background on his restaurant and the town. Nice guy and great vision for what the future holds. Our lunches arrived and wow! My wife's salad was dressed in feta, sun dried tomatoes and a balsamic glaze. The shrimp were large...very large. My order was outstanding. Large shrimp, andouille sausage and rich creamy grits. Some of the best grits I've ever eaten actually. I think there was a hint of cayenne as there was some heat. Not a lot of heat but it was there. Large portions, great atmosphere and fair prices. I previously liked this place, but a very bad experience has me dropping my rating and rec. The last time I went, the scotch egg was absolutely disgusting (and barely above room temp). Likewise the fish and chips was awful - lukewarm fish and cold/chewy fries. I would have said something to our server, but she was more interested in chatting with her coworkers. One bad experience shouldn't completely cancel out prior good experiences (so it's a 2, not a 1), but I doubt I'll give it another chance. read more

The tables are rather close by, so if you don't like sitting particularly close to strangers, this place is not for you - unless you ask for a booth. We ordered: Shepherds pie with their special gravy, which I thought was delicious and well prepared. I was hesitant between the bangers and mash and the fish and chips. At the end I ordered the fish and chips and regretted it. The chips were spot on - crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside. The fish was not fried well - the fish and the dough was undercooked and came apart mushy. The coleslaw was interesting - I believe there were hints of apple cider vinegar, which added to the crunch and acidity, but the veggies were cut too coarsely - a bit too chunky for me.
