Chocolate Long John & Glazed Donut
    Steven B.

It's National Donut Day and I needed to celebrate. Actually, what I really needed was a donut. I have not had a donut since last year. I'm trying to lose weight and donuts are one of my weaknesses, so I have avoided them. Can you think of a better time to give in to the urge? It's donut day! Instead of going to one of my regular and favorite donut shops, I decided to celebrate somewhere new. I had heard great things about this little mom & pop shop, so here is where I celebrated. My go to order for donuts, is always pretty much the same. I stay with the classics, a Glazed Donut and a Chocolate Long John. As everyone has stated, this shop is small. Actually, it is very small. The display cases are at unusual angles, making the waiting area for customer very compact. The selections of donuts is limited. When I arrived around 10:30AM, there were many empty trays. So they must of had a very successful morning. Jessica M.'s husband can laugh at me, too. These donuts are dense and fluffy at the same time. After eating my two, I did not feel weighted down. These donuts were also, not overly sweet. The chocolate was a lighter chocolate, which did not sit well with me. It was good, but I prefer a darker and richer chocolate on mine. The Glazed donut was flavorful and had just enough glaze added to its outside. Other donuts shops, overly glazed and you're constantly having to wipe your fingers. Staff was obviously two generations working in a family business. My two donuts were only $1.60. What a deal. You're not paying for ambiance. Your paying for just donuts. I'll be back? - It's good, but next time I'll go back to my usual. When: June 7, 2019 Why: National Donut Day

Some chocolate long johns & glazed... Of course a couple special ones too.

Been going here off & on since I was a child. My go to is always chocolate long johns & glazed(I know I'm boring, but I like what I like). This mom & pop always have the best, my cat even likes a taste of the donut (no chocolate for him). Trying to support my people in this time, and they never disappoint.

    Love this simple sign!

I LOVE this donut shop! They have the best coffee in town for an affordable price. The service is great! Colleen is the owner. She is there every single day. Her son works with her. Together they offer great donuts and terrific coffee! They are always pleasant and fun to chat with. Sometimes we go just for the coffee! Try it! Thank you Colleen for a great cup of coffee and donut! PS - if I could give this donut shop more stars....I would!!

Well well well. I remembered driving by this spot when I used to live on this side of the park and always meant to stop but never did. Today, I needed some donuts but World Fair (my usual) was unexpectedly closed, and O'fashion came to mind. Windows garnished with Elvis Presley posters and cash only, sure do fit the theme. It seems to be ran by an older couple who were really nice and really grateful for my business. Now the dones... they were great. They were so soft that the blueberry one (my favorite) was almost falling apart before I could get it into my mouth. I was really impressed. I got a box of rainbow sprinkle, glazed, and blueberry and they were crowd pleasers for sure. Glad to know that I can count on this place, as it seems to be the closest donut shop to our place.

Giant cinnamon doughnut for only $1

I pass by this store literally every day on my way to and from work. This morning, I reeeeally had a craving for something sweet (pregnancy hormones... go figure) and decided to stop in. The shop is pretty small with just two cases of doughnuts. I went for a big one that the lady behind the counter said was cinnamon. It only cost me a dollar. One dollar! I repeat again, one dollar! Look at the size of this doughnut!! It took up almost an entire plate. I only got through half of it before my sweet tooth was satisfied (which I great because now I'll have a snack for later haha). The dough was soft and not chewy, it was fried just right, the cinnamon wasn't too strong, and there was lots of glaze. Even though the selection was small, it's nice to have another doughnut option to add to the list of local doughnut shops (and it's suuuper cheap)!

I hadn't been here in like over ten years. In case you were worried it's still exactly the same! We're 11 months into the Covid-19 pandemic and while they did install Plexiglas on the counters, the man and woman behind the counter were not wearing masks. There was another man wearing a mask to the right of the counter but in front of it. If you've ever been here you know it's small and he probably shouldn't be hanging out there if we're attempting to social distance inside the mask less donut shop. I picked up a dozen donuts for work on a Saturday morning. I told the woman to just mix them up as their selection is pretty small. The consensus was that while these donuts are not going to win any beauty contests they are very delicious. At $12 for a dozen they are also very inexpensive. Obviously this circus is cash only. Take it for what it is and if you're on The Hill you might try O'fashion Donuts.

Or at least that's what I like to romanticize. My wife and I are kicking off donut Wednesday with a trip to Donut House on Morganford. I described ourselves to the proprietor as long-time passersby, first-time stopper in. We had been by Donut House 100s of times and decided to make Donut House our inaugural Donut Wednesday stop (we'll probably do every other or 1 out of 3 Wednesdays). We both have our favorites...hers blueberry cake, apple fritter, cinnamon roll. His...blueberry cake, apple fritter and a custard filled chocolate. Not disappointed at all, these donuts were great! The blueberry cakes were light, fluffy and blueberry bombs. The apple fritter was like a light, fluffy deep fried apple pie...great cinnamon and tart apple...maybe the best I've ever had. The custard filled chocolate is my personal litmus test...this one was good but not great. Could have used more custard BUT is there ever a bad donut??? NEVER. Glad we stopped in and will do so again. FYI there is seating inside and plenty of off street parking. Plus the light at Morganford / Seibert makes going an easy in / out. Oh and there is a drive thru...way too easy.

A Cautionary Tale (a real one, not a tall tale): First, I…read morecan't say that I'm writing a super fair review, because I haven't ever been into this donut shop. But my mom bought us some donuts from Olde Towne Donuts. I had a bite of a chocolate cake donut and it tasted fine. However, after eating a chocolate Long John, my 15 year old son informed me that he needed his rescue inhaler and some Benadryl pills, because he was having an allergic reaction. We didn't eat anything unusual for dinner. And the donut was the only other thing he ate. When I called the shop to ask if they use any kind of soy protein or pea protein in the ingredients- sure enough, they do. Before calling, I had searched on their facebook page a little to find out it if they had some special feature to their donuts- like "healthier" because of added protein, but I didn't see any mention of ingredients. When I called to ask, the girl who I initially asked wasn't sure what kind of ingredients they used, so I guess a head baker or owner got on the phone and confirmed that they used soy protein in their donuts. I'm not mad- thankfully my son was pretty quick to recognize it and was home where we were able to give him what he needed right away. Still, I caution not only customers with allergies or sensitivities, but I also have a strong word of advice to the owners: if you don't already have notices of this added protein ingredient posted in the store clearly as a warning, as well as on your website/ social media pages, I urge you to do so. It could seriously be a matter of life or death. My son has what people typically refer to as a "peanut allergy"; people who truly have that allergy are not allergic to nuts (I suppose someone could also have a nut allergy on top of it), but they are allergic to much more than just peanuts; it is a legume allergy. Legumes are plant foods formed inside pods, like beans, peas, and pea"nuts". Nowadays, there are so many unexpected foods that can cause an anaphylactic reaction for people with a legume allergy, because so many processed foods have protein as a filler (like highly processed frozen chicken nuggets). And now manufacturers are proud to boast their food item has "added protein". It is the legume protein that causes the severe allergic reaction, known as anaphylaxis. Which can often occur immediately upon ingesting the allergen and the life threatening symptoms can progress in just a matter of minutes. Thankfully, my son's reaction is not immediate- he usually has at least 30min before it becomes serious requiring immediate intervention, and lately he's been able to curb it by taking Benadryl, but he has had many ER visits and epinephrine as a young child. I have often been warned and urged by nurses and doctors not to take the risk of waiting, but to use the EpiPen injector and call 911 as soon as it is realized that ingested an allergen- even before symptoms- or as soon as he has symptoms -even if he's not sure he ingested an allergen. My point in sharing all of this is to emphasize the importance and seriousness of the matter. Please make it known to your customers in some obvious way (and certainly such that your employees would know) that your delicious donuts are made with soy protein (or pea protein or chickpea protein, or lentil protein- believe me, those are all used as added plant proteins.) Reading labels is second nature to our family, but it's so hard when something fresh made incorporates the allergen into their food that would not typically have added proteins. We love donuts and have eaten them from so many different donut shops and houses of donuts all over the country, but never encountered a hidden allergen in the dough. Let the people know, please!
