My father passed away following complications from surgery this year. I can't say enough in praise of the respect and professional concern demonstrated by each member of the staff. The transport personnel who came to my home in the middle of the night were reverent and very kind and respectful. I accompanied my mother as she met with Darrell to arrange for cremation and interment. He and the administrative staff were so helpful to her and to all of us in our grieving and took care of so many details that I didn't know would need to be done. Losing a loved one any time is hard enough. Losing a family member during the partial shutdown caused by a pandemic can be very disorienting and extra-difficult to navigate. This past Saturday, Feb 15th, we buried my 13-year old grandson. He was my oldest grandchild and being my oldest, he held a very special place in my heart. Unless you've been thru this, you can't fully understand the lost. My son and daughter in law decided to call Oahu Mortuary to see Darryl Salvador. We met Darryl 2 1/2 months prior when he had helped us with the cremation of my other grandson who had passed through a miscarriage. Through the whole process of arranging services for my grand babies, Darryl had gone above and beyond to make this transition easy for us. I don't usually write reviews on yelp or any other site but I needed to share how much we were touched by the way Darryl took care of us. From the moment we first called him on the phone to the moment we left the cemetery, Darryl was so very respectful to our family. He was so very professional and most of all, sympathetic to our needs. At a time like this when everyone is mourning, we never once felt like he was 'only doing his job'. He made us feel like we were family and that he was mourning alongside with us. In fact, that's how I feel toward him now...like he is ohana. Let me start by saying, Oahu Mortuary probably has the nicest people I've ever talked to working there and answering the phone . My Father just passed away. I'm still a teenager and this was the hardest thing I've ever endured. I called them late in the night and the intake person was so soft spoken and comforting. The people that picked up my father were so very much respectful. My mother , my brothers, and I still needed so much time. They gave us that and gave us their condolences. As they were moving him , they were so gentle with my dad and let us hug him ( my dad) and kiss him throughout the moving process. The movers wrapped him up in a beautiful soft blue blanket of some sort and carefully put him in their van. They were so respectful and made it a little easier to say out last goodbyes. My mother is very tight for money as she has to support three dependents herself and pay for the mortgage. We all work but couldn't because my dad was in hospice and we only had days before he passed in which he did. So my mom was in a pinch sadly. This lady that we spoke to over the phone was so sweet , let my mother grieve and talk about just about anything . She still managed to get in her questions that she needed but never rushed into anything . She just let the convo flow. My mother was very happy to know she could pay in installments . She put a down payment of $350. We are now not in the huge hole we thought we'd be in because of how flexible Oahu mortuary is. I recently lost the love of my life, my soul mate. He passed away in Hawaii on a vacation. It's hard to believe I'm writing a review for a mortuary. My grandma passed away on December 18th and she was cremated four days later (which included a weekend). My uncle passed away a few days after my grandmother and their family used a different mortuary and was told they were "backed up" and wouldn't be able to cremate him until after January 2nd. My family visited Oahu Cemetery & Crematory because they were highly recommended by a family friend. They visited a few days before my grandma died to get the paperwork together. After grandma died, the mortuary was diligent in submitting the paperwork and making sure her cremation permit was approved in the timeline we wanted. We had a short window of time to hold her service and needed her to be cremated before then. On top of that, there was a slight delay in the state "signing off" on her permit (something about the coroner's office?). Oahu Cemetery & Crematory was on top of it, and willing to make phone calls if they had not heard by a certain time of day. Excellent customer service and everything worked out. read more

At the worst time of my life, I lost my husband to a horrible disease that he had been fighting four and a half years. He was at home, as was his wishes, and Hospice was in on the weekdays. He lost his fight at 1:07 am February 1, 2020. Prior to that Hospice told me to start calling mortuaries. They had a list, and we are very low income people, and Oahu Mortuary was the least expensive for cremation. They came and picked up his remains very sympathetically. We have no children, no family just the two of us. I had no idea how to make any kind of arrangements. He was at the mortuary for about 10 days before they could proceed with cremation, waiting for a death certificate from Hospice. They didn't charge me a dime for storing his remains. The woman who helped me, Shelly, just took over for me. She took care of his cremation, called me when his ashes were ready, along with 25 copies of his death certificate I had requested. The staff members were all very low key and comforting. Shelly did all necessary paperwork for me, had a notary on the premises for said paperwork, and did everything that needed to be done for me. This mortuary is non-profit and I wanted to write this review so others like me know where to go when they need help with making arrangements for a loved one and don't have a clue where to start. Start with Oahu Mortuary. They have your back. I don't know what I would have done without them. Thank you Shelly, Mickey and the rest of the staff who helped me. I received the ashes in a biodegradable bag inside of a box, and a canvas bag to carry them in. My husband wants a paddle out at Makaha Surfing beach, where so many of our good times were spent. I want to shout on the roof tops about how amazing Oahu Mortuary has been. I recently lost two loved ones a month a part. First loss, we went to another mortuary. The people we meet with were very much coming off as salesmen. We felt belittled for not having a plan in place and we're reminding that due to no plan we will be taking hours to "start from scratch." That rubbed me the wrong way. It didn't end there. My loved one was not picked up yet because they were too busy and she was at a hospital so it was ok. This was 2 days after she passed. She was finally picked up a whole 6 days later. Time for final identification. It was a picture, a very horrible looking picture. There was nothing done to make her look decent. Price was double what we paid at Oahu and the service was not something any mourning family should be receiving. The services were expensive. The chapel was not air conditioned and when asked about moving a table we were told it's up to the director. I'm sorry but when you pay thousands of dollars you should be able to move a table. 1 month later to OAHU. This place was chosen because it was inexpensive...again half the cost. From the beginning Miki was very empathetic, he didn't try to upsell and we finished the plans in 30 mins. I was also so incredibly touched to have the option to see my loved one for 5 mins at no cost. I was on a plane when she passed and the other family member was flying in and never got to see her. Appt was made for 2 days later and I was preparing myself for a horrific scene because of the pic we were shown at the other place. My loved one was made up and looked so peaceful. I so very much appreciated the care and effort. My last vision of her was a good one. Fast forward. She was cremated and ready to come home 6 days after she passed. Other place did not cremate until the 9th day and she was ready the day after. 9 days after her passing the death certificates were ready. I wish we knew about this place before. I am over the top grateful and very much so recommend OAHU Mortuary when you need them. I attended a funeral and full military honors burial this Tuesday. The whole operation was well handled, but what surprised and impressed us more than anything else was this: the so-called grounds keepers, who only an hour beforehand were covered in sweat and mud, were standing there alongside the coffin to lower it into the ground. They had somehow groomed their uniforms' appearance, wiped the sweat off their brows, had matching construction helmets with matching veteran imprints on them, and were standing at attention with absolute respect for the veteran's last goodbye. His grief-stricken widow, even at that emotional moment, saw the beauty of this tribute: the six men lowered the coffin with straps clenched and reeling from their left hands, and saluted in unison. It was just awesome. The honor guard, as always and as expected, were flawless as well, but not connected to the mortuary, just working in flawless concert with their organization. read more

Ok. I'm going to write a review of a graveyard because I feel compelled to... Oahu Cemetery is in my opinion, probably thee most picturesque graveyard on Oahu. I remember coming to this graveyard as a young boy to visit and place flowers for my grandfather. In the beginning it was more of a fun outing, a morbid thought, but the place has a little stream running into a small pond with all kinds of fish, turtles, crayfish, even ducks and ducklings! Running among the headstones and getting scolded for not respecting the final resting place of those who went before. In the graveyard of today, not much has changed. It's still a very beautiful, peaceful place. There are many Victorian style gravesites, various angels and cherubs guarding their charges... Many noteworthy and prominent citizens of old and modern Hawaii reside here. One notable person I saw is Alexander Joy Cartwright, known as the "Father of modern baseball". There are also many ethnic groups represented and my grandparents are interred in the Japanese section. The majestic Monkey Pod trees and neatly manicured grounds really pay homage to those who went before us, those who did their part to make these Islands a better place for all who came after. This will always be my favorite graveyard, not only for my family who are here, but for the rich historic value this place has and most of all, for the tranquility... read more

OK, it's a little odd to review a cemetery at which one has not been a "customer", so to speak. (Though if you'd been a customer I suppose you'd have more pressing concerns...) But this is a pretty interesting place to visit. There are a lot of historical figures & famous names from Hawaii's past, and the grounds are well-kept. Our mom passed while on vacation in Hawaii. Her wish was to be cremated upon passing, and I was faced with arranging for this while on the mainland and trying to cope with overwhelming grief. I called four or five other funeral homes prior to calling Oahu Cemetery & Crematory. After about 2-3 minutes talking to Blanca, the managing director, I knew this was the place. She outlined all that needed to be done and finished up with something along the lines of: but you don't need to think about any of that. And she indeed followed through and made it happen with great efficiency, precision and thoroughness. Within minutes I had emails from her. Sign, scan, send with picture for identification - done. Next, a follow-up phone call which began with: we will get mom here and under our care as quickly as possible. Comforting words, and she followed through on her promise. Mom was quickly transferred from the county morgue and cremated the next day. Blanca also obtained a transit permit for mom's remains, sent a death certificate worksheet should I need it until the official certificate was received and provided lots of other useful information. It turned out that I did not need the worksheet because she somehow managed to work magic in getting the requested number of official certificates in a matter of days when I had been told by other sources that it can take anywhere from 4-12 weeks. True to my initial impression, Blanca proved to be a person who genuinely cares and was clearly dedicated to lifting as much of the burden from my shoulders as possible. As far as Oahu Cemetery & Crematory in general, all staff were warm and helpful and there was never any hint of upsell, price gouging, hidden costs, or wide-ranging price brackets with difficulty getting a precise cost. I have had to work with Oahu mortuary two times in less than two months... I had a miscarriage and from the first time we called, we worked with Darrell. He did not make my family feel silly or Less important because I had missed carried early in pregnancy. He took care of me and treated my family with the utmost respect. When my son died in January, I called again and asked to work with Darrell because of the care and respect he had given us just a few weeks ago. My wife, children and grandchildren were visiting Kona when my wife became very ill. She was helicoptered to Honolulu where there are specialists that were not in Kona. In Honolulu, she died. We had talked about cremation, and both had agreed that cremation was what we wanted for ourselves. I decided to have her cremated in Honolulu and shipped to Colorado Springs where we lived, so I could get back to my family who had gone back to Colorado Springs earlier. So without any knowledge of mortuaries in Honolulu, I started calling. One seemed to be a good choice, but couldn't see me on that day. I wanted to make all the arrangements that day because I had a flight scheduled for that night. I asked that mortuary who she could recommend that might be able to see me that day. She said to try Oahu Mortuary. I called Oahu Mortuary, and they said they could meet me right away. I took a cab over to meet them and Cher and Miki couldn't have been nicer. I knew right away that this was this place to handle my wife's remains. The price was very competitive. But what sold me was their sincere caring.
