I visited the Oak Park Bakery for the first time today. It's a small bakery super close to my house - which is sort of dangerous when baked goods are involved. It is an old school bakery - cakes with buttercream frosting and it smells wonderful when walking in. I stopped in for a healthy - breakfast - ha! I was hoping for a bit more of a selection. They had donuts and danish. It seems they are known for their coffee cake which is what I had. Admittedly- it's very good. It's also an incredibly reasonable price. You may ask, do they need another five-star review? Yes, they do. Here's what I purchased: Potato bread (a full loaf) is only $2 something and the pączki is delicious! It was strawberry-filled when I went. Eat with caution, the powdered sugar will get ALL OVER YOU. The bun is fluffy and light. The glazed strawberries were refreshing and sweet. I got two of these. The total of these three baked goods with coffee cost about $8. What an amazing deal. Here's what I didn't purchase: everything else that I had to stop myself from buying. There were raspberry filled donuts, custard filled donuts, cake, hot dog inside bread... I can't wait to try more next time I'm in the area. I talked to the employees who said that for Pączki Day, they have over 14 types of pączki available! This bakery had a large variety of baked goods at decent prices. The staff was also incredibly kind and patient with me as I asked them to explain to me all the items even though they were quite busy. I tried their cheese danish, strawberry bismark, apple cinnamon roll, glazed donut, and vanilla cupcake. My favorite item by far was the apple cinnamon roll. The dough was so soft and the cinnamon with apple pieces provided such a wonderful texture and flavor. The icing was also generous and sweet while not overwhelming. The vanilla cupcake was incredibly light. I was surprised by a filling inside the vanilla cake as well and it tasted very different from most cupcakes I've had. I liked that it wasn't dense and the sweetness wasn't overwhelming. The cheese danish and strawberry bismark were my least favorite items. The dough on both was too dry. The strawberry jam in the bismark tasted very artificial like it was from a jar and it was way too overly filled as you can see in the picture. The glazed donut was an average donut. Overall, I'd go for the cinnamon roll and cupcakes here but leave the donuts. read more

I had called a couple bakeries and then found Oak Park Bakery through Yelp. I'm so glad I called them. We've ordered about 5 different birthday cakes over the years and each has been perfectly crafted, moist, delicious and beautifully decorated. The selection of donuts, pastries and other treats is amazing and always very fresh and delicious. This is our go-to bakery for work treats or when we are visiting relatives. I sent a picture of the cake I wanted and asked if they could make one similar. Plain white icing with one or two pink and white roses. I followed up with a call to confirm. She told me they could not do gold icing trim, I agreed to plain white smooth icing with one other two roses. When my husband picked it up, he paid almost $30 for a cake to serve 6 that looks nothing like the one I ordered. It is very ornate and had lots of tan and white extra on it. I am obviously very disappointed. I guess sending a photo doesn't help. I haven't tasted the cake so I cannot comment on that. If I had had time, I would have returned the cake for a do over. read more

We arrived early in Oak Park to celebrate a birthday with a coffee cake. There was plenty of on-street parking because people were able to walk in, pick up their order and walk out quickly. We had trouble choosing from all of the amazing delicious backed goods, but the staff was friendly and patient. We were thrilled with the pecan pull-apart. We also bought several pies all delicious! Be sure and check their website. They take orders and bake to order. There wasn't a place to sit, this is an old fashioned bakery, you have to eat your treats at home or have a picnic. We'll be heading back on our next visit to Oak Park to try the Paczki. read more

C'mon, doesn't the bible say something about Sundays being made for guilt-free coffee cake and sprinkle donuts. BOTTOM LINE: LOVE! Other reviewers have said it, and they're right: This place is old school. Birthday cakes come with colorful frosting flowers, cookies are iced or sprinkled, and coffee cakes look like coffee cakes. Nothing fancy here, but you will enjoy moist cakes and myriad other fantastic baked goods. We also got our wedding cake at OPB, and it was tasty and gorgeous. Oak Park Bakery is located conveniently on a busy street and next to the Blue Line stop. I've been here a handful of times for an early morning sweet on my way to work or on my way home. It's a typical older looking bakery with a few of your typical pastries, cupcakes and treats. Admittedly, it's not great. I've tried to give them a chance but every time I am a bit disappointed. It's just bland. Period. They use too much buttercream on certain items, too. I'd rather go out of my way for good pastries than go here again. Great bakery for all of your baked goods needs, especially the old-school favorites!! While it may not be huge or extravagant, what they have inside is all so delicious and very affordable. Their portions are awesome, and the baker we spoke with was so friendly! The chocolate eclair was out of this world!! The custard was seriously popping out at the seams, and the chocolate frosting was just the right balance of richness and flavor. That pastry was stellar! We also tried coffee cake with a cream filling. While we enjoyed this treat, we definitely agreed that a custard filling is more our preference. Both very generous portions came in at under $6. Upon moving to the Chicagoland area, the first thing I did was of course yelp the area around my new apartment. Oak Park Bakery stood out as a local favorite especially since the area overall wasn't as packed with outstanding local businesses as the areas of California that I am used to. After a couple months of living here, I finally decided to stop by Oak Park Bakery one afternoon. The place is a very hole in the wall, unassuming little shop. There's nothing fancy about the location -- no fancy decorations, no gimmicks, etc. And there is nothing wrong with that as the shop obviously is just focused on serving their community delicious baked goods at a very affordable price. Since I came in on an afternoon, the shop wasn't busy at all and I could take my time exploring the plentiful options (plus they have BOGO deals in the afternoons). I asked for recommendations and ended up taking home a strawberry cake and two donuts (BOGO). Everything was delicious, tasted homemade, and wasn't cloyingly sweet -- all pluses in my book. The next time I came in was on a weekday morning and there was a line and a significant wait. I guess mornings are understandably their busy hours so just keep that in mind if you are in a rush! They definitely have some regulars and I love that because it gives the place a super small town and homey feel. The Chicago land area has its share of very successful and locally famous bakeries. In Oak Park, I would consider Oak Park Bakery to be one of the best. What I love is that they make all the traditional pastries, like cake, butter cookies, pies, and cupcakes. Since I'm not a fan of the taste of fondant, I choose to go here instead, because they're cakes have real butter-cream frosting. A couple of years ago, my family ordered a birthday cake here, and the cake was so light, yet moist, it was very delicious. This year I finally got around to buying a cake for a friend's birthday at work. Everyone loved it and thought it came from one of those other bakeries that people rave about. I was happy to introduce them to Oak Park Bakery, and told them they need to try it out for themselves. I've since gone back for another birthday, and when I'm in the area, I stop in after work occasionally. In the afternoons they sometimes have discounts, and I can help but be suckered in. This is not what I'd call a "modern trendy bakery." What it is...is a very Old School Chicago Style Bakery...where you can get your fix of excellent coffee cake, doughnuts, danishes...all the stuff that will kill your diet...or your co-workers will hate you for bringing into work to kill THEIR diets. They make this chocolate, chocolate chip butter coffee cake thing...that I'd marry if it proposed to me! Seriously... And I've had their fresh strawberries coffee cake in lieu of a birthday cake before. And the spritz cookies...YUM. The reason it gets five stars? At 7:30 in the morning in December...when everybody and their grandmother is stopping to grab a box of "treats" for the office...I'm in and out the door in five minutes. With my treats. Sometimes with a free "for the road" doughnut. Try that at Panera Bread. And they're cheaper...with a higher quality of baked good. These sorts of places are being killed by chains. We forget they exist until we need a shower cake...or it's paczki day. DYNAMITE! Sure, the exterior isn't much to look at, but to be honest, that doesn't matter because the desserts and the service are fantastic! The mission today was to purchase a treat for one of my co-workers birthday's. As soon as I walked in, all the aromas wafted right up my nose, and I got hungry just waiting in line. After looking at everything, I decided to purchase a plum coffee cake, which I'd never seen before anywhere. The cost was very reasonable and the lovely ladies behind the counter were talkative and knowledgeable, even though it was only 6:30 in the morning. I paid, they boxed up my treat, and off to the blue line I went. When my coworkers tried the coffee cake this morning, they said it was absolutely positively delicious, and they can be a tough group to please, sometimes. They convinced me so much, that I decided to have just a teeny sliver (as I'm allergic to gluten) but boy oh boy, was that taste worth it! I will be back for more goodies in the future, as this bakery is near my house, and the blue line. But I have NEVER had anything BAD from this place (including the gum from the bubble gum machine my daughter infrequently asks for). The place is really neat... Quaint, and charming, and old skool all the way... I went here today to pick up a b-day cake for the fiance and I didn't know what to expect.. I don't like anything that's pre-made in a large chain grocery store with gobs of sugar frosting on top.. I walked in half expecting a cute lil german chocolate cake... And I wasn't surprised when the lady said that they only made one and that it was sold.. it was already 2:30PM.. so I was gonna go with the Black Forest cake on display when a baker from the back said "gimme 30 minutes"... Four blocks from my house, and I'm so happy for that. Started coming for the coffee cakes, which are just so darned good. About 14 to choose from, too. The frosted sugar cookies are about the best I've had. Designs change for various holidays, but the quality is always good. The other cookies are very good as well. Doughnuts are heaven. If you're in line at the Dunkin' on Roosevelt, instead of here, it must be monday, the day OPB is closed. No other excuse. Cakes are good, though I'm not a fan of buttercream frosting. This is just a cake rating. I love their old-fashioned cakes. I moved to this area last year and have been looking for a bakery. My family, friends, and I are not big sweets fan, but we do enjoy eating sweets - just less the amount of sugar! When I ordered a birthday cake from here the first time I got to custom the cake to whatever I want - type of cake (yellow, chocolate), type of frosting, type of filling, and how to decorate. I chose the least sweetest option and when I brought it to a party, everyone loved the cake. It was moist and not as sweet (I ordered a yellow cake with whipped cream and banana filling). It was delicious! I ordered the same cake again for my grandma's birthday and my whole family loved it.
