This is just a cake rating. I love their old-fashioned cakes. I moved to this area last year and have been looking for a bakery. My family, friends, and I are not big sweets fan, but we do enjoy eating sweets - just less the amount of sugar! When I ordered a birthday cake from here the first time I got to custom the cake to whatever I want - type of cake (yellow, chocolate), type of frosting, type of filling, and how to decorate. I chose the least sweetest option and when I brought it to a party, everyone loved the cake. It was moist and not as sweet (I ordered a yellow cake with whipped cream and banana filling). It was delicious! I ordered the same cake again for my grandma's birthday and my whole family loved it. I've received postiive feedbacks from both my friends and family so now I am considering Oak Park Bakery to do my wedding cake! It is a small bakery and they generally get a lot of business! read more

I'd give this a 3.5 if I could, but it's local and old school and takes me back to my days working in a local bakery during high school. I've been frequenting this place for a few months and finally feel good about writing a review. Here's what I love: 1. Friendly folks. (they gave my kids some cookies!) 2. Local and down to earth 3. Yummy treats, my favorites being (excuse my made up names) a. Raspberry and custard frosted thingy b. Honey pecan squares c. Butter cookies d. Strawberry cream cheese light pastry stick thingy My kids have really enjoyed the donuts and long johns, but I haven't tried them cause I'm not so much a donut person. If they had some really good coffee I would go here nearly every day, but the coffee is your basic foodservice grounds and even when I get it I find the need to grab something more robust later that morning. Forget all the fancy overpriced DONUT SHOPS- just head to Oak Park Bakery and you will fall in love with their Crullers and Glazed donuts- for years I shipped their crullers, pecan coffee cakes and pecan sticky buns to my parents in Florida a couple times a year. The crullers are to die for and everything else is delicious too. I adore the eclairs. No need to travel far- we have the very best right here in Oak Park. read more

Two words: Oh my! And coming from a 9-month pregnant lady who has been expertly navigating desserts for the past 3 trimesters, this means a lot. I ordered a yellow cake with buttercream frosting and raspberry filling for my husband's birthday, and OPB must have invented cake because every other cake I've tried is a pale shadow of the one we experienced here. The buttercream was so light and airy it must have been whipped by angel's wings. The raspberry filling kept the pillowy cake layers from drifting back to heaven from whence it came. Am I being overly dramatic.....or are there fairies baking magic pastries even as I type? All I know is that I don't think I can wait for a special occasion for another cake, I may just have to celebrate a Thursday with another quadruple-layered cake. read more

The Oak Park bakery isn't easy on the eyes. The window display begs to be dressed; there were just a few trays of cookies, and cakes in the window, nothing to drool over. It is exactly as everyone stated; a blast from the past. They even have one of those old skool screen doors from the 70's. Here you will find your spritzed butter cookies dipped in chocolate, sprinkles etc. Coffee cakes, pies, butter cream frosting and bars galore. They sell a nice selection of packzis, but they appeared to be sliced and then filled. They aren't here to wow you with graphics, aesthetics, or even a chair to rest your weary feet. It's simple baked goods from your childhood. I bought my son a yellow smiley face cookie to surprise him for an after school treat. I love the Oak Park Bakery. Plain and simple. The owners are lovely, their staff is friendly, their baked goods are amazing (especially their yummy atomic birthday cakes)...what else could you possibly want? We ordered our wedding cake through them and were thoroughly pleased. Everyone raved about the cake. Even my friend, who didn't know she was sitting at the same table as the man who made it, said "I didn't know that wedding cake could actually taste good!" Based on the glowing reviews here, I decided to order my son's first birthday cake (only THE most important cake of his life ;-) from Oak Park Bakery. Let me tell you, it was HEAVEN. We opted for the yellow cake with fresh banana filling and whipped cream frosting. It was light and fresh and possibly the best birthday cake I've ever had. And the kid dug it, too. Made my first trip to this bakery in quite a number of years. Great traditional bakery with a good selection and nice staff. I ordered some brownies, raised chocolate donuts and oatmeal cookies. All were good - though the brownies were a little old school - I tend to prefer some of the more intense chocolate flavored types that many places have. What set this place apart for me was this - so often when one goes to a bakery or the like nowadays and places an order like I did, it's haphazardly put into a bag or box and by the time you get to your destination, your goodies look like crap. The person who served me put each of my items in separate bags, used wax paper as needed, and then set then separately into one bag. When I got home to take them out, they could have been served to a king. Nothing was crushed and there was no frosting or gooey mess in the bags. That is the way it should be. So it's the service more so than the product that earns this place five stars, though the baked goods were pretty good. I'll be coming back. read more

Prices are good and most of their items are good. It was becoming my favorite bakery. However, I went in there and they were out of an item and I was told they would receive the item next week. So, I'm wondering if some of their items come from a factory already pre-made? Maybe next time I'll get the nerve to ask them flat out. I have been going here for 20 years, on and off, only because its close to where I live. Let me tell you it does not deserve 4 1/2 stars. Most of their items are not made on site. I bought a German Chocolate Cake and when I brought it home I could basically stand my knife straight up in the frosting because it was so stale. Its a decent 'local' bakery, but no one outside of a 3 block radius should be going there for anything other than the fact that they have been around forever and the locals don't want to be honest about the product. Every coffee cake, cookie, roll I get there has a very bland taste and looks like something Entenmann's made. It is cheap , so I gave them 2 starts for an honest effort and not over charging. read more

Walking into Oak Park Bakery took me back to a different decade--40 or 50 years ago. The doughy treats I've tried are tasty enough, albeit not for the diabetic... or anybody trying to shed a few pounds. That being said, they're classic staples of American culinary history--from the sweet custard filled Bismark (AKA Boston Cream Doughnut) to apricot Danish. Don't come here expecting high-fashioned dining. Oak Park Bakery serves pretty good food but you won't get "art" pastries... nor will you pay for the "atmosphere". There's a long bench on one wall but you're better off walking north along Oak Park Avenue and slip into the town's nostalgic center. Prices are very affordable; bring cash because if you're just popping in for a nibble you shouldn't go over the $5 credit card limit. read more

This review is for the plain croissants. I work nearby so I stop in about once a month to pick one up on my way to work. They are light yet filling. The dough(?) is never baked too much or too little, but just right. And at under a buck, well, you can't beat 'em. They are open early and they are always friendly. read more

I love Oak Park Bakery! Every time I'm home, i stop in for a small box of those amazing Italian butter cookies that I can't seem to find anywhere outside of the Chicago area. Ordered a birthday cake for mom and it was wonderful. Yellow cake, strawberry filling, buttercream icing with coconut on the sides. It was delicious. Bonus points for friendly, knowledgable service. Most of their recipes are more than 80 years old and they have been in the same spot all that time, and when the place was sold all the recipes were sold with the building, which is the smart way to start a new business. Great choice for our company's donut Friday! I'm new to the company and this was my first time at bat. Oak Park Bakery's donuts hit it out of the park. I bought 3 dozen donuts and sweet rolls; and they are all fantastic. They taste freshly made. Everyone is raving about them. I called the afternoon before and the woman on the phone was very helpful and patient with me. She even arranged the donuts in cake boxes because I told her I had to take them on the train. She said they would be easier to carry and get through the turn-style. She was so right! This was my first time at Oak Park Bakery and - in spite of my New Year's resolutions to eat healthy - it won't be my last. read more

This place simply has not disappointed. I have a co-worker who brings "the goods" in every few weeks and all that we have had from Oak Park Bakery has exceeded my expectations. In particular, a regular favorite of mine is the cake donut with Chocolate frosting. The frosting and the cake is the perfect texture and not greasy at all. I'm so glad that I live close to this bakery - they are known for their butter coffee cakes, but the locals know them for their amazing customer service and neighborhood feel. This is a LEGIT bakery - meaning that everything is fresh and they never take any shortcuts, resulting in high quality baked goods and breads. I always try to swing by here on my way home from the train, and fortunately they offer surprise discounts toward the end of each business day (ex: 50% off coffee cakes, but-one-get-one cupcakes and donuts, etc.). read more

During that horrific winter storm, I was unable to pick up a bakery order--worth about $20. I had paid for it but could not get there. When I spoke to the owner, I found him to be rude and hostile. I simply requested credit but he refused, going on and on about Covid. I thought this was very bad business. I will never go there again. The owner needs to cultivate some manners. read more

We moved 60 miles from Oak Park Bakery and I'm really missing it. They are outstanding. There are so many great bakery items that I love I will list a few. Their Kolacky is the best. Started going to this bakery about 5 years ago. It's a great, old school neighborhood bakery. Their strawberry shortcake is the best. They also have good coffeecake (especially the ones with fruit filling). For the first time this year, we tried the Pazcki (pronounced "punch-key") on Fat Tuesday. They just might be my new favorite in the Chicago area. We tried a few different fillings: buttercream, fudge and fresh strawberry. All were so yummy! Can't wait to go back next Fat Tuesday a try a few more. Stay away from the butter cookies, though. They are bland and dry. read more

This is primarily a donut review, DONUT REVIEW; otherwise I'd offer up four stars. Cake donuts have a delicious crust that is firm and contains the moisture oh so well and yields with that little bit of bite and contains nary a hint "limp" "soft" "cheap." I actually went back inside and bought more. The yeast donuts were moist, but nothing of the sort that made me mad with desire. I tried a few other items, all good. Oak Park bakery rates well, but a limited donut selection is the set back for purposes of my review. If this were a rating for the totality of the place, it'd be 4 stars.
